Harold Piper
Former Bremerton resident Harold Martin Piper, 40, of Spanaway died Dec. 28, 1999, in Lakewood of cancer.
He was born July 29, 1959, in Carrollton, Mo., to Charles and Doris (White) Piper. He grew up in Phoenix, graduating in 1977 from South Mountain High School in Phoenix.
Mr. Piper was in the Navy from 1977 to 1981. He was stationed aboard the USS Enterprise in Bremerton from 1979 to 1981.
He worked with Goodwill Industries for the past year.
He married
Debra Brooks on Aug. 17, 1997, in Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife; his mother and stepfather, Doris and Aden Alter of Bremerton; two stepsons, Isaac and Matthew of Spanaway; two stepdaughters, Jennifer and Lisa of Spanaway; four brothers, Robert of Tacoma, Tommy of Murray, Ky., and Ronald and Michael of Bremerton; one sister, Linda of Bremerton; four stepbrothers, Dennis Alter of Tacoma and Bert, Steve and Eddie Alter, all of Bremerton; and a stepsister, Teresa of Tacoma. He was preceded in death by his father.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. today at the Family Worship Center in Gorst.
Edith Oakden
Edith Oakden, 80, of Silverdale died Dec. 26, 1999, in Silverdale.
She was born Dec. 10, 1919, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Clyde and Ruth (Halladay) Points. She grew up on a farm in Pottawattamie County, Iowa.
She married
Julius Radmer. They were divorced in 1947.
She married
Hal Oakden on Aug. 20, 1947, in Reno, Nev. The couple moved to Silverdale in 1985.
Mrs. Oakden had been a PBX switchboard operator at Mercy Hospital in Sacramento, Calif., until her retirement.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include four sons, David of Silverdale, Steven of Sacramento, Edward Hadwin of Dawson, Iowa, and Gerald Radmer of St. Paul, Minn.; and one daughter, Carol Jean Miller of New Jersey. She is also survived by many grandchildren, including, Wendy Naylor of Silverdale, Thomas of Bremerton, Brian of Silverdale and Gordon of Bamberg, Germany; and one great-granddaughter of Silverdale. She was preceded in death by her husband and by a daughter, Marlene.
A graveside service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Janis Wingard
Janis Arlene Wingard, 53, of Port Orchard died Dec. 25, 1999, at her home of natural causes.
She was born Oct. 18, 1946, in Lansing, Mich., to Harold and Arlene (Ames) McCuaig. She grew up in Phoenix, Ariz., graduating from high school in California.
She married
Gary Wingard on March 19, 1982, in Long Beach, Calif.
Mrs. Wingard was a data entry clerk in various jobs. She had been a homemaker for 10 years.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Michael Mac-Kintosh of Boise, Idaho; two daughters, Jennifer MacKintosh of Bremerton and Sandra Hart of Port Orchard; two brothers, Larry Mattson of Wisconsin and Gary Mattson of Waco, Texas; one stepson, Steven Wingard of Las Vegas; two stepdaughters, Kristianne Clark of Merrimack, N.H., and Gina McIntosh of Las Vegas; and six grandchildren, Haley Hart and Zachary Melin of Port Orchard, Joshua and Hannah MacKintosh of Boise, and Jonathon and Joshua Clark of Merrimack.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. today at First Lutheran Church in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Charles Carpenter
Charles Eaglin Carpenter, 72, of Bremerton died Dec. 26, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Oct. 16, 1927, in South Homer, Ill., to Alva and Elizabeth (Wells) Carpenter. He was raised and educated in Champaign-Urbana, Ill., and graduated from Urbana High School in 1944.
Mr. Carpenter served in the Navy from 1944 to 1978, retiring as an aerographer's mate first class.
Following his retirement from the Navy, he was a carpenter in Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and helped build Bremerton High School. He founded Carpenter's Furniture Stripping and Antiques. He last worked as a construction foreman for Kitsap County Self Help Housing.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 239 of Bremerton, William H. Upton Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite Bodies of Bremerton; El Zor Grotto, Shriners and BPOE No. 1181.
He married
Marceline Cloward Oct. 23, 1948, in Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Roy; two daughters, Terri Weaver and Pamela York of Port Orchard; two sisters, Esther Buttittla and Nellie Kringle of Colorado; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
At his request, there will be no service. Cremation will be at Cherry Grove Memorial Park, and his ashes will be scattered at sea by the Navy.
Ivan Crawford
Ivan Crawford, 91, of Port Orchard died Dec. 24, 1999, at Ridgemont Terrace Convalescent Center in Port Orchard.
He was born April 18, 1908, in Carmen, Okla., to Aldyn and Pearl (Burnaugh) Crawford.
He was raised in Carmen. He was a farmer in Kansas and Oklahoma in the 1920s and '30s, and moved to Monitor in 1944. He worked in various agricultural jobs, and as an auto mechanic.
He built a home in Bridgeport in 1956 and continued to work in fruit orchards until retiring in 1976.
Mr. Crawford moved to Ridgemont Terrace in 1994.
He married
Laura Opal Stufflebeam in Oklahoma in 1937. They divorced in 1955, and she preceded him in death in 1978.
Survivors include one daughter, Opal Forde of Port Orchard; one brother, Woodrow, of Pocatello, Idaho; two sisters, Vinnie Bosworth of MacKay, Idaho, and Viola Derrick of Oakdale, Calif.; five grandchildren, Brian Forde of Bremerton, Steven Forde of Port Orchard, Grace Taylor, Ivan Taylor and Robert Culp, all of Las Vegas; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lucille Taylor, in 1972, and by a grandson, William Culp, in 1978.
No services are planned. Interment
will be at Wenatchee City cemetery in Wenatchee. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made in Crawford's name to a charity of the donor's choice.
Jan Donaldson
Jan Cooke Donaldson, 50, of Bremerton died Dec. 28, 1999, at Harrison Hospital of cancer.
He was born Oct. 6, 1949, in Shelton, to Blanton and Mary Louise (Booth) Donaldson. He graduated from Shelton High School in 1968, and from Western Washington University in 1973.
He married
Frances Rice on Aug. 28, 1971, in Shelton.
Mr. Donaldson was an educator for 26 years, eight years as a teacher and 18 as a principal. He was principal at Armin Jahr Elementary School in Bremerton for the past seven years.
Mr. Donaldson also was a language arts consultant and a national speaker for the Bureau of Education and Research.
He was a member of the Silverdale United Methodist Church and coached PeeWee basketball and baseball.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Drew of Bremerton; two daughters, Jessica and Kathryn of Bremerton; two brothers, Bud of Shelton and Jim of Union; and one sister, Mary Ellen "Babe" Worrell of Tacoma. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Don.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at Silverdale United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Gladys Adair
Former Bremerton resident Gladys Elizabeth (McElhaney) Adair, 87, died Dec. 23, 1999, in Long Beach.
She was a Bremerton resident for more than 40 years, from the mid-1940s until 1992.
She was a hairdresser.
She is survived by one daughter, Barbara McDonald of Ilwaco.
A private burial service was held at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park. Arrangements were under the direction of Penttila's Chapel by the Sea in Long Beach.
William Hammel III
William Gerard Hammel III, 47, of Port Orchard died Dec. 28, 1999, in Port Orchard of natural causes.
He was born May 12, 1952, in Pittsburgh, Penn., to William and Vera (Horne) Hammel Jr. He grew up in Pittsburgh, graduating from high school there and from Pennsylvania State College.
Mr. Hammel served in the Army from 1972 to 1976. He was stationed in Fort Belvoir, Va.
He married
Catherine Flaxman in Roselle, Ill., in 1986.
He worked in Bremerton for the L.H. Sowles Company from 1986 to 1993. He was contracts manager for GenErect Inc. in Port Orchard for the past nine years.
Mr. Hammel was a life member of the United States Chess Federation.
Survivors include his wife; his mother; three sons, William IV of Pittsburgh and Jason and Gunther of Port Orchard; two daughters, Athena of Pittsburgh and Danae of Port Orchard; two brothers, Mark and Steve of Pittsburgh; and one sister, Barbara McMillen of Pittsburgh. He was preceded in death by his father in 1998 and by an infant daughter, Tanya.
A celebration gathering is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at the family residence in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Mildred Witt
Mildred Elizabeth Ann Witt, 75, of Bremerton died Dec. 28, 1999, in Seattle.
She was born Sept. 17, 1924, in Seattle, to Elton and Sarah (Ray) Witt. She was raised and educated in Port Orchard, graduating from South Kitsap High School in 1942.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Peninsula Pacers C.B. Club and the Eagles.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Timborski and Beth Felder of Bremerton; one stepson, Raenold Probst; one stepdaughter, Peggy Voland; one sister, Helen Bracomontes of Richland; and one granddaughter, Kathrine Gormanous. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Langland, in 1998, and by her husband, Jay Felder, in 1951.
Private family services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
