Leo Westermann
Leo H. Westermann, 75, of Bremerton died Dec. 23, 1999, at his home following a short illness.
He was born Dec. 8, 1924, in Kansas City, Kan., to Leo and Agnes (Fleishner) Westermann. He grew up in Kansas City, moving to Bremerton in 1940 and graduating from Bremerton High School.
Mr. Westermann served in the Navy from 1943 to 1945. He was a boatswain mate third class, receiving medals for service in the American Campaign and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, as well as the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
He married
Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Clevenger on April 3, 1948. She preceded him in death in 1992.
Mr. Westermann worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 42 years, retiring in 1984 as mechanical group superintendent. He was the recipient of the Navy Meritorious Service Medal while working in management at PSNS.
When his sons were in Boy Scouts, he was involved with Explorer Scouts Troop 512 and Boy Scout Troop 504. He was a member of Trout Unlimited.
Survivors include three sons, Mike of Bremerton, David of Shelton and Jim of Port Orchard; two daughters, Debra Nopp and Darlene Neshem, both of Bremerton; one brother, Robert of Portland, Ore.; and 13 grandchildren, Kaileigh, Kelsey, Kirsten, Erin, Sarah, Dean Jr., Derrick, Brian, Kyle, Adam, David Jr., Bryce and Christopher.
An open house is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday. Debra Nopp or Camile Westermann may be contacted for directions.
Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. Interment
will take place at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Jean Hansen
Jean Hazel Hansen, 73, of Silverdale died Dec. 15, 1999, at Harrison Hospital of acute heart failure.
She was born Nov. 25, 1926, in Poulsbo to Charles and Ruth (Thompson) Hansen. She grew up in Poulsbo, graduating from North Kitsap High School in 1944, and from Seattle Pacific College in 1948.
She was a missionary with The Evangelical Alliance Mission in South America for 30 years. She was also a member of Scandia Bible Church in Poulsbo.
Survivors include four brothers, George of Silverdale, Henry of Longview, Richard of Poulsbo and James of Ilwaco.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Jan. 29 at Scandia Bible Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

James Nield
James Kenneth Nield, 73, of Port Orchard died Dec. 18, 1999, in Monroe of a sudden illness.
He was born Nov. 28, 1926, in Harrodsburg, Ky., to James and Virgie (Ross) Nield.
Mr. Nield served in the Army from 1943 to 1946, seeing duty in the Philippines during World War II. He later served in the Air Force from 1946 to 1947.
He worked in various jobs as a mechanic, retiring from ABC Rental in Bremerton in 1990. From 1964 to 1977, he owned and raced sprint cars.
Mr. Nield was a member of the Machinists Union and the American Association of Retired Persons.
He married
Yvonne Terry on April 11, 1994, in Port Orchard.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Terry of Arlington; one daughter, Shirley Gayle Tilford of West Lafayette, Ind.; one brother, Norman of Kentucky; two sisters, Margaret Weldon and Juanita Perry, both of Kentucky; two stepsons, Stephen and Michael Terry; two stepdaughters, Susan Terry and Linda DeLong; five grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; and 11 step-greatgrandchildren.
A memorial service was held at his son's home in Arlington.

Edith Oakden
Edith Oakden, 80, of Silverdale died Dec. 26, 1999, in Silverdale.
She was born Dec. 10, 1919, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Clyde and Ruth (Halladay) Points. She grew up on a farm in Pottawattamie County, Iowa.
She married
Julius Radmer. They were divorced in 1947.
She married
Hal Oakden on Aug. 20, 1947, in Reno, Nev. The couple moved to Silverdale in 1985.
Mrs. Oakden had been employed as a PBX switchboard operator at Mercy Hospital in Sacramento, Calif., until her retirement.
She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include four sons, David of Silverdale, Steven of Sacramento, Edward Hadwin of Dawson, Iowa, and Gerald Radmer of St. Paul, Minn.; and one daughter, Carol Jean Miller of New Jersey. She was preceded in death by her husband and by a daughter, Marlene.
A graveside service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Fannie Beck
Fannie Frances Beck, 93, a resident of the Port Orchard/Bremerton area for 49 years, died Dec. 27, 1999.
She was born March 16, 1906, in Unadilla, Neb., to Noah and Minnie Lyon.
She married
Harold Beck on May 15, 1924, in Gregory County, S.D.
After a number of years farming with her husband in the Lynch, Neb., area, the family moved to Havelock and Bethany, Neb., where at the beginning of World War II, Mrs. Beck worked at the Mead, Neb., ordnance plant, helping build bombs in support of the war effort.
In 1943, the family moved to Vancouver, Wash., where she trained as a welder in the construction of ships for the Navy. She later worked as a welder at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
She was a member of Curley Creek Grange 567, the WWI Association, the American Legion Unit 030 and the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Albert of Rochester, Melvin of Oak Harbor, and Ronald of Palm Bay, Fla.; one daughter, Hazel Grosche of Hillsboro, Ore.; and 15 grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel, with a graveside service following at 2 p.m. at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Janis Wingard
Janis Arlene Wingard, 53, of Port Orchard died Dec. 25, 1999, at her home of natural causes.
She was born Oct. 18, 1946, in Lansing, Mich., to Harold and Arlene (McCraig) Cames. She grew up in Phoenix, Ariz., graduating from high school in California.
She married
Gary Wingard on March 19, 1982, in Port Orchard.
Mrs. Wingard worked as a data entry clerk in various jobs. She had been a homemaker for 10 years.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Michael MacKintosh of Boise, Idaho; two daughters, Jennifer MacKintosh of Bremerton and Sandra Hart of Port Orchard; two brothers, Larry Mattson of Wisconsin and Gary Mattson of Waco, Texas; and four grandchildren, Haley Hart and Zachary Melin, both of Port Orchard, and Josh and Hannah MacKintosh, both of Boise.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Jim Barnes
Delbert James "Jim" Barnes, 80, of Keyport died Dec. 23, 1999, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center in Bremerton.
He was born Jan. 23, 1919, in Kingston to William and Ethel Rhoda (Keuhy) Barnes. He graduated from North Kitsap High School.
Mr. Barnes served in the Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was stationed aboard USS South Dakota in the South Pacific.
He worked as a mechanic for Kitsap County. He was retired.
Survivors include one son, Jim of Keyport; one daughter, Nancy Olson of Olympia; two sisters, Lillian Richardson of Kingston and Katie Coke of Seattle; and one grandchild.
Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.

Roy Frost
Roy L. Frost of Bremerton died Dec. 23, 1999, in Bremerton of natural causes.
He was born in Erick, Okla., to Fox and Ada (Hobbs) Frost. He grew up in Oklahoma City, Okla.
He married
Murial Reiter on Sept. 1, 1932, in Oklahoma City. She preceded him in death in 1990.
During World War II, Mr. Frost helped construct the Alkan Highway in Alaska. After the war, he was instrumental in the construction of Highway 3 through Gorst.
He founded Frosty Snacks. He owned and operated the business for 20 years, retiring in 1972.
Mr. Frost was a past member of the Elks and the Civil Air Patrol. He was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include one daughter, Penny Duperroir of McKinleyville, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Jeff Guido of Bremerton, Mike Guido of Maui, Hawaii, Derrick Frost of Lake Forest, Calif., Brad Frost of Tempe, Ariz., Michael O'Hara of Santa Rosa, Calif., Leanne Eames of LaHabra, Calif., Kristy Campbell of Irvine, Calif., and Melissa Frankland of Apple Valley, Calif.; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jack, in 1998 and a granddaughter, Susan Guido, in 1986.
A graveside service is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
George Lavender
George Calvin Lavender, 75, of Silverdale died Dec. 23, 1999, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Tacoma.
He was born July 4, 1924, in Portland, Ore., to Orville and Myrtle (Wilson) Lavender. He attended schools in South Kitsap, graduating from high school in 1942.
Mr. Lavender served in the Army from 1942 to 1945, landing at Utah Beach on D-Day. He was with the 471st Tank Division and had recently attended a 50-year reunion.
He married
Virginia Rice on Sept. 5, 1947.
As a young man, he worked in the family business, Lavender's Dairy. In the early 1950s, he took over a Chevron station in Manette.
George's Chevron moved to East Bremerton and then to Bucklin Hill in 1977, where he continued working until his retirement in 1990.
Mr. Lavender received many awards and trips from Chevron for excellent service during his 40 years with the company. Following retirement, he drove for Parr Ford and later for Airporter Shuttle Bus.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Curt of Port Orchard and Scott of Bremerton; one daughter, Crissie of Bremerton; one sister, Hazel Copeland of Sunnyslope; six grandchildren, Bobbie Lavender, Craig and Ryan Allen, John and Reuben Dias and Rachael Durham; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at Silverdale Baptist Church. Burial will take place at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
