Herbert Downing
Herbert Lee Downing, 80, of Belfair died Dec. 23, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Feb. 1, 1919, in Saffel, Ark., to William and Sarah (Adams) Downing.
He served in the Navy for 20 years and was stationed on USS Nevada in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack in December 1941. He served in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, he spent two years of duty in Japan and one on Adak, Alaska. He transported supplies to the Arctic on one trip, and retired in Kodiak, Alaska, after five years stationed there.
Mr. Downing is survived by a son, P. Michael of Kodiak, Alaska; a daughter, Janet R. Hintz of Bremerton; a brother, R.A. Downing of Arkansas; two sisters, Pauline Cunning-ham of Mississippi and Wanda Krshul of Missouri; and four grandchildren, Thomas, Lisa, Lara and Christy.
Arrangements are being handled by Pendleton-Gilchrist at Rill Chapel.

Vincent Marcus
Vincent Charles Marcus, 86, of Silverdale died Dec. 21, 1999, in Bremerton.
He was born Aug. 31, 1913, in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, to Reginald C. and Alberta S. (Barnhart) Marcus. He grew up in Kellogg, Idaho, attending the University of Idaho, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Mr. Marcus was a manager for Illinois Central Railroad, having worked in Seattle, Eugene, Ore., and Long Beach, Calif.
He was a member of Geneva Presbyterian Church in Laguna Hills, Calif. He had served as president of the Laguna Hills Moulton Kiwanis Club from 1985 to 1986.
Survivors include one son, Vincent Jr. of Newark, Ohio; one daughter, Karen Greenhill of Poulsbo; one brother, Ashton of Westlynn, Ore.; one sister, Margaret Gale of Wilsonville, Ore.; three grandsons; and one great-grandson.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Linder Room at Crista Shores Retirement Community in Silverdale. A private, family inurnment will take place at Spokane Memorial Gardens in Spokane. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.

Ethel Johnson
Ethel D. Johnson, 81, of Port Orchard died Dec. 22, 1999, at Port Orchard Care Center.
She was born Oct. 30, 1918, in LaMoure County, N.D., to Olaf and Inga Johnson. She grew up in Lisbon, N.D., moving to Port Orchard in 1958.
She married
Dale Johnson on Jan. 26, 1941, at Standing Rock Church in Fort Ransom, N.D. He preceded her in death in 1997.
Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker. She had also worked as assistant activity director at Ridgemont Terrace in Port Orchard for eight years during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Port Orchard where she sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Children's Orthopedic Guild.
Survivors include four sons, Gary and Kenneth, both of Port Orchard, Larry of Selah and Dennis of Seattle; two brothers, Orville of Seattle and Willard of Kent; eight grandchildren, David and Brian, both of Port Orchard, Nathan of Bothell, Matthew of Everett, Katie and Kevin, both of Selah, Scott of Anchorage, Alaska, and Todd of Tucson, Ariz.; and three great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Herbert and Harold.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church. Interment
will be at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Jim Barnes
Delbert James "Jim" Barnes, 80, of Keyport died Dec. 23, 1999, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center in Bremerton.
He was born Jan. 23, 1919, in Kingston to William and Ethel Rhoda (Keuhy) Barnes. He graduated from North Kitsap High School.
Mr. Barnes served in the Navy during World War II, from 1942 to 1946. He was stationed aboard USS South Dakota in the South Pacific.
He worked as a mechanic for Kitsap County. He was retired.
Survivors include one son, Jim of Keyport; two sisters, Lillian Richardson of Kingston and Katie Coke of Seattle; and one grandchild.
Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.

Hal Wennerberg
Hal G. Wennerberg, 70, of Port Orchard died Dec. 21, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Aug. 14, 1929, in Seattle. He grew up in Pendleton, Ore.
Mr. Wennerberg served in the Marine Corps from March 16, 1946 to May 26, 1947.
He retired from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on Jan. 3, 1985. He was a sheet metal foreman in Shop 17.
Survivors include his former wife, Barbara of Bremerton; one son, Curt of Bremerton; one daughter, Carol Keith of Port Orchard; and six grandchildren, Jennifer, Mallory, Krystal and Hayley Wennerberg and Benjamin and Kelly Keith. He was preceded in death by two sons, Hal Jr. and Bryce.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday, also at Rill Chapel. Interment
will be at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard following the service.
LaVerne McLaughlin
LaVerne Helen McLaughlin, 78, of Poulsbo died Dec. 22, 1999, in Issaquah.
She was born Nov. 14, 1921, in Larned, Kan., to Daniel and Carrie (Kinkel) Tanner. She attended school in St. Louis.
She married
Clinton Daniel McLaughlin on July 13, 1945, in St. Louis. He preceded her in death in 1995.
Mrs. McLaughlin was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Suquamish and St. Olaf's Catholic Church in Poulsbo. She volunteered at both churches for charitable events and was a member of the Legion of Mary.
Survivors include three sons, Patrick of Freeland, Tim of Kingston and John of Poulsbo; two daughters, Mary Haws of Poulsbo and Rose Burkette of Redmond; one sister, Ruth Fiesler of St. Louis; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel in Poulsbo, with a rosary following at 3:30 p.m. also at Stone Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Olaf's Catholic Church. Burial will be at Forest Lawn cemetery in Bremerton.

Leonard Compton
Former Bremerton resident Leonard Eugene Compton, 53, of Gaston, Ore., died Dec. 20, 1999, in Hillsboro, Ore., of a heart attack.
He was born Jan. 16, 1946, in Bremerton, to Robert Kenneth and MayBell F. (Nolan) Compton. He grew up in Bremerton, attending Central Kitsap High School.
Mr. Compton served in the Army from 1964 to 1967.
He married
Donna Stilson on Aug. 7, 1970, near Puyallup.
Mr. Compton was a self-employed industrial insulation contractor.
Survivors include his wife; his mother, MayBell Armstrong; three sons, Allen and David of Oregon, and Greg of Bremerton; a brother, Les of Bremerton; two sisters, Barbara Johnson of Silverdale and Roberta Monroe of Hawaii. He was preceded in death by his father in 1971, by a brother, Kenneth, in 1972, and by a brother, Fred, in October of this year.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday at Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home in Hillsboro, followed by a 1 p.m. graveside service at Valley Memorial Park cemetery, 3809 SE Tualatin-Valley Highway in Hillsboro.

Micki Corsette
Former Bremerton resident Zelphia D. "Micki" Corsette, 63, of Gloucester, Va., died Dec. 21, 1999, at her home.
She was a member of Bellamy United Methodist Church in Gloucester.
Survivors include a son, Richard; a daughter, Christina Stallings; four sisters, Veda Gilliam, Catherine Patterson, Nancy Richmond and Cindy McClary; a brother, Orville Nail; and three grandchildren, Stanley and Julia Stallings and Cecelia.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at Bellamy Memorial cemetery in Gloucester. Arrangements are under the direction of Andrews Funeral Home.

Julia McKinney
Former Bremerton resident Julia Mae McKinney, 64, of Renton died Dec. 17, 1999, at her home.
She was born Feb. 19, 1935, to Johnny and Leonettie Livingston in Clinton, N.C. She grew up in Clinton.
She was a longtime employee of the University of Washington. She retired from the UW.
Survivors include a son, James; two daughters, Jacqueline Oceola and Jennifer; her mother; three brothers, Willie, Johnny Jr. and Robert; three sisters, Katy, Alice and Linda; and five grandsons.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at New Hope Baptist Church in Seattle, with a funeral service following at 11 a.m. A visitation is also planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home, with a funeral service following at 11 a.m. Internment will take place at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Harold Almquist
Harold Almquist, 85, of Poulsbo died Dec. 20, 1999, in Bremerton.
He was born Sept. 3, 1914, in Little Fork, Minn., to Albert and Hanna Margaret (Quick) Almquist.
He married
Pearl Wager in 1952, in Scandia. She preceded him in death in July 1989.
Mr. Almquist worked for the government as a sheet metal worker. Following his retirement, he owned and operated a repair shop.
Survivors include a brother, Paul of Everett; and four stepgrandchildren, Rebecca Syltebo of Bellevue, Dennis Syltebo of Washougal, Brian Belmont of Port Hadlock and Todd Belmont of Everett.
A graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. Monday at Forest Lawn cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
