John Joynt Jr.
John J. Joynt Jr., 77, of Port Orchard died Dec. 8, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Oct. 8, 1922, in Spring Point, Ill., to John and Melva (Carter) Joynt. He grew up in Decatur, Ill., graduating from Decatur High School in 1941.
He married
Veva Fitzwater.
Mr. Joynt served in the Navy from 1941 until his retirement in 1969.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Duaine of Port Orchard; one brother, Paul of Decatur; and three granddaughters.
No services are planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist at Rill Chapel.

Gary McCutcheon
Gary Todd McCutcheon, 58, of Sequim died Dec. 8, 1999, in Sequim, following a long battle with cancer.
He was born Oct. 4, 1941, in Anchorage, Alaska, to Hubert Raymond and Eva Elaine (Waldron) McCutcheon.
Mr. McCutcheon served in the Army.
He moved to Port Angeles from Oceanside, Calif., in 1991, later moving to Sequim. He worked at North Sound Bank in Sequim for several years prior.
He was married
to Elaine Kolinchak. They were divorced, and she preceded him in death.
Survivors include three sons, Farrell, Rex and Gary, all of Anchorage; one stepson, Richard Jones of Colorado; one brother, Robin of California; one sister, Sharon Rice of California; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Anchorage at a later date. His ashes will be spread on his family homestead in Anchorage. Arrangements are under the direction of Drennan and Ford Funeral Home in Port Angeles.

Marvin Knutson
Former Poulsbo resident Marvin Ray Knutson, 64, of Puyallup died Dec. 6, 1999, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup after a short illness.
He was born Jan. 8, 1935, in Williston, N.D., to Henry and Evelyn (Ryland) Knutson. He moved with his family to Poulsbo, living there through eighth grade. His family then moved to Tacoma, where he attended Stadium High School.
Mr. Knutson served in the Air Force.
He married
Nancy Ann Willis in November of 1957.
Mr. Knutson worked for the Pierce County Sheriff's Department for 22 years.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years; one daughter, Sydne Tullar; two sons, Kevin and Timothy; his mother, Evelyn Ada Knutson of Tacoma; one sister, Mary Ann Erickson of Bremerton; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation was held Wednesday at Hill Funeral Home in Puyallup. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. today at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 14th and Stevens North, in Tacoma.
Beatrice Anderson
Beatrice Margaret Hornbeck, 94, of Bremerton died Dec. 8, 1999, at Bremerton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Feb. 7, 1905, in Top Sail, Newfoundland, Canada, to James and Winifred Allen. She moved to New York in the early 1920s, to Seattle in 1922 and to Bremerton in 1948.
She graduated in 1920 from Saint John's Normal School in Saint John's Newfoundland, Canada, and in 1924 from Bishop-Spencer Nursing School in Seattle.
She married
Francis Henry Hornbeck on June 23, 1927, in Seattle. He preceded her in death in 1977.
She worked as a nurse at Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle for 23 years, retiring in 1947.
She was a member of Blue Star Mothers of America.
She is survived by one daughter, Carol Brigham of Illahee; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren;
and five great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Rae Austin, in 1977, and two sons, Edgar Hornbeck in 1986 and Arthur Hornbeck in 1994.
A graveside service is 11 a.m. today at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Logan McClure
Logan Michael Thomas McClure, born Sept. 2, 1999, to Christopher Foster and Elizabeth McClure, died Dec. 4, 1999, in Tacoma.
Survivors include his mother, of Tacoma; his father, of Puyallup; and his grandparents, Jim and Kathy McClure of Gig Harbor, Carol Foster of Orting and Rick Foster of Monroe.
A private graveside service was held at Haven of Rest Memorial Park in
Gig Harbor. A memorial service is 2 p.m. Saturday at the Family Worship Center in Port Orchard.

Stephen Hilstad
Former Manette resident Stephen Bruce Hilstad, 75, of Gig Harbor died Dec. 5, 1999, in Gig Harbor. He had lived in Gig Harbor for the past 20 years.
He was born July 5, 1924, in Manette, to Oscar and Gladys (Victor) Hilstad, a pioneer family. He grew up in Manette, attending Bremerton High School.
Mr. Hilstad served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1943. He was stationed in Arizona and California.
He married
Anne-Kelledy Hitchcock on Jan. 9, 1943.
Mr. Hilstad completed an apprenticeship at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He worked in the sail loft at PSNS for many years.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Linda Smith of Spokane and Melanie Marcy of Fox Island; a brother, Donald of Yakima; and four grandchildren, Kevin and Dennis Smith and Brian and Erin Marcy.
At his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Haven of Rest Funeral Home in Gig Harbor, with interment at Island Lake cemetery.

Lelya Calhoun
Former Olalla resident Lelya Eugenia Calhoun, 86, of North Bend died Dec. 9, 1999. She had lived in Olalla for more than 50 years.
She was born Dec. 20, 1912, at Freeland on Whidbey Island.
She was a domestic engineer.
Survivors include three sons, Michael of Port Orchard, Randal of Vancouver, Wash., and William of North Bend; a daughter, Lynn of Port Angeles; seven grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mirvile.
A graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. Monday at Haven of Rest Memorial Park in Gig Harbor.
Mary Elizabeth Olguin
Mary Elizabeth Olguin, 74, of Fairfield, Calif., died Dec. 8, 1999, at her home.
She was born Nov. 25, 1925, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Survivors include one daughter, Noreen Johnson of Fairfield; two sons, Frank Neal and David Lee, both of Washington state; a brother, Donald O'Neal of Post Falls, Idaho; 10 grandchildren, including Tara Lewis of Bremerton; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church in Fairfield. Private inurnment will be at Fairmont Memorial Park also in Fairfield. Arrangements are under the direction of Bryan-Baker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Carl Peterson
Carl Melvin Peterson, 70, of Bremerton died Dec. 4, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born March 6, 1929, in Oak Park, Ill., to Clarence and Hulda (Lund) Peterson. He grew up in Bremerton, graduating from Bremerton High School in 1947 and from Olympic College in 1950.
Mr. Peterson received his bachelor of arts degree from Central Washington University in Ellensburg in 1952, and his master of arts degree from CWU in 1956.
He married
Billie Jo Fykerude on Aug. 23, 1952, in South Bend.
He served in the Army, 25th Division, 27th Regiment (Wolfhounds) from 1952 to 1954. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
While serving in Korea, he was a combat infantryman and an instructor in the non-commissioned officers school. His military honors included the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars and the Combat Infantryman's Badge.
Mr. Peterson was a teacher and counselor in the Bremerton School District for 27 years, retiring in 1984.
After his retirement, he owned and operated Video Memories, until illness forced his retirement this year.
He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Bremerton, the Bremerton Tennis and Athletic Club and the Active Club.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Tom of Grapevine, Texas, and Craig of Bremerton; two daughters, Randi Adolph of Redmond and Kristin Uhrig of Bellingham; a brother, Jack of Alpine, Calif.; two sisters, Karen Johnston of La Mesa, Calif., and Anita Reinhold of El Cajon, Calif.; and 11 grandchildren, Raelani, Stormy and Carly, all of Bremerton, Michael, Brittany and Stephanie, all of Grapevine, Johanna and Maia Adolph, both of Redmond, and Jedediah, Wyatt and Levi Uhrig, all of Bellingham.
A life celebration is planned for 1 p.m. Dec. 17 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society.

Ruth Sumpter
Ruth M. Sumpter, 89, of Bremerton died Dec. 5, 1999, at Bremerton Convalescent and Reha-bilitation Center.
She was born July 16, 1910, in Williston, N.D., to William and Anna (Larson) Spangler. She grew up in North Dakota, graduating from Williston High School in Williston. She also graduated from Minot State University in Minot, N.D. and the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.
She married
Lonnie Sumpter in Bremerton in 1946. He preceded her in death July 17 of this year.
Mrs. Sumpter had been a teacher at South Kitsap High School for 30 years, retiring in 1975.
She was a member of the Sons of Norway and the Kitsap County Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by two sisters, Marian Underwood of Riverside, Calif., and Angela Armour of Millington, Tenn.
A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Dec. 15 at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. Interment
will follow at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
