Bill McFarland
Raymond Lewis "Bill" McFarland, 80, of Bremerton died Jan. 25, 2000.
He was born March 6, 1919, in Hermosa, S.D., to Lewis and Ann (Currier) McFarland. He grew up in South Dakota and Canada, graduating from high school in Hermosa.
Mr. McFarland served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, from 1942 to 1945.
He married
Elisabeth "Elsie" Lutolf on Feb. 6, 1944, in Custer, S.D.
He was employed in public works at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 34 years, retiring as a supervisor in Public Works 07 in 1975.
He was a member of the Elks, the Eagles, the American Legion and had been a Kitsap Lake volunteer firefighter.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Raymond Jr. of Quilcene; one daughter, Elaine Powell of Bremerton; one sister, Elsie Johnston of Garden Valley, Idaho; and three grandchildren, Angelia, Tyson and Lindsey. He was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and one grandson, Tomy.
Visitation is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, also at Lewis Funeral Chapel, with a reception following. A private family burial will take place at a later date at Forest Lawn cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Kitsap Unit, P.O. Rosa Galarza
Rosa Lena Galarza, 64, of Port Orchard died Jan. 23, 2000, in Port Orchard.
She was born Sept. 11, 1935, in Puerto Rico, to Raymond and Ramona (Colon) Lopez. She grew up in Puerto Rico, New York and Washington state.
She married
Adam Galarza in 1972 at Elim Lutheran Church in Port Orchard. He preceded her in death in 1994.
She was a homemaker and an active member of the Eagles.
Survivors include two sons, Carlos of Chehalis and Adam of Vancouver, Wash.; four daughters, Sandra Evans and JoAnn Galarza, both of Manchester, Sabrina Reid of Vancouver, Wash., and Myrta Wiltoff; two brothers, Pete Lopez of Miami and Chaio Lopez of Puerto Rico; two sisters, Ada Rodrigues of Boca Raton, Fla., and Ely Santiago of Miami; seven grandchildren, Ricky and Nina Folden, Erin and Jesse Galarza, Jacqueline Speer, Jonathon Evans and Corey Reid; and two great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Garcia.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel on the Hill, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m.
Peter Lang
Former Bremerton resident Peter Thomas Lang, 73, of Sun City, Ariz., died Jan. 20, 2000, in Sun City of pneumonia.
He was born Jan. 29, 1926, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Harry and Hazel (Castor) Lang. He grew up in Fort Dodge. He had been a resident of Bremerton from 1967 to 1998.
He married
Audrey Sweeney on May 10, 1945, in Jacksonville, Fla. She preceded him in death in 1995.
Mr. Lang served in the Navy from 1943 until his retirement in 1971. He was a lieutenant commander and a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
He was a member of the Retired Officers Association.
He and his wife, Nancy, were married
in November 1998 in Reno, Nev.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Thomas, Richard and Peter, all of Bremerton; one daughter, Mary Ellen of Bremerton; one sister, Loretta Mix of Rock Falls, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Feb. 6 at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel on the Hill. The inurnment location is The Punch Bowl National cemetery in Oahu, Hawaii.
Vern Hoskins
Former Port Orchard resident Vern Claud Hoskins, 61, of Phoenix died Jan. 16, 2000, in Phoenix.
He was born April 28, 1938, in Seymour, Mo., to Pete and Dora (Todd) Hoskins. He grew up in Port Orchard, attending South Kitsap High School.
He married
Sharon Snow on Sept. 25, 1956, in Port Orchard.
Mr. Hoskins was a concrete foreman, working on drydocks at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, the Hood Canal Bridge and several dams in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
He had owned a commercial fishing boat in the 1960s. Later, he owned Vern's Roofing and Fencing in Port Orchard from 1968 until retiring in 1998.
Mr. Hoskins also bred and raised thoroughbred horses, racing them at Long Acres, in Yakima, Elma and Phoenix.
He was a member of the horseman's association and Gold Mountain Golf Club. He had sponsored several Little League, girls softball and track and field teams in South Kitsap, as well as a men's softball team in Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Michael, Mark and Matthew, all of Port Orchard, and Murray of Pacific, Wash.; one daughter, Cynthia Carinci of Port Orchard; four brothers, Walt and Wayne, both of Bremerton, Ken of Phoenix and Bob of Port Orchard; two sisters, Lois Becker of Oshkosh, Wis., and Patti Booth of Port Orchard; and eight grandchildren, Snow-Lynn, Chad, Shawon, Craig, Dean and Tyler Hoskins, all of Port Orchard, Chris Beeler of Port Orchard and Alisha Beeler of Pullman. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl, of Battle Ground.

Richard O'Connor
Richard Nevins O'Connor, 87, of Bremerton died Jan. 25, 2000, in Bremerton.
He was born July 10, 1912, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Mr. O'Connor served in the Army during World War II. He was a Bremerton firefighter for 18 years, until his retirement.
Survivors include two sons, Richard of Bremerton and Dennis of Kingston.
At his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Tuell-McKee of Bremerton.

Catherine Mohtiak
Catherine Ann Mohtiak, 19, of Bremerton died Jan. 22, 2000, in Bremerton.
She was born Aug. 2, 1980, in Fairfield, Calif., to Michael and Zilca (DeOliveria) Mohtiak. She attended Cottonwood Elementary School, Fairview Junior High School, Olympic High School and the Alternative High School.
Survivors include her parents; two brothers, Daniel and Michael, both of Bremerton; two sisters, Michele and Linda, both of Bremerton; her maternal grandparents, Zilka DeOliveria of Comstock, Minn., and Jose DeOliveria of Newark, N.J.; and her paternal grandmother, Mary Morvay Mohtiak of New Jersey.
Visitation is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral liturgy is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton. Inurnment will be at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Hazel Pote
Hazel E. Pote, 82, of Olalla died Jan. 25, 2000, at her home of natural causes.
She was born Dec. 20, 1917, in Afton, Iowa, to George and Susie (Newkirk) White. She grew up in Afton, graduating from Creston High School in Creston, Iowa.
She married
Randy Pote in 1938. Mrs. Pote was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Mike of Olalla; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Pam; a son, Steve; and by two sisters, Grace Eddy and Flora Miller.
A service is planned for 3 p.m. Saturday at the family home in Olalla. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

James Pettitt
Former Bremerton resident James D. Pettitt, 52, of Santa Clara, Calif., died Jan. 19, 2000, at Kaiser Hospital in Santa Clara.
He was born Sept. 29, 1947, in Bremerton to Don and Christine Pettitt. He was raised and educated in Bremerton, graduating from West High School in 1965, attending Olympic College and graduating from Seattle University with a degree in engineering.
Mr. Pettitt served in the Marine Corps. He was a Vietnam veteran.
He was a manufacturing engineer with Applied Materials Co. in Santa Clara.
Survivors include his mother; and one sister, Shirley Paulson of Silverdale.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A graveside service with full military honors is planned for 2:30 p.m. Monday at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.

Gerald Berling
Gerald R. Berling, 76, a longtime resident of Kitsap County, died Jan. 22, 2000, in Silverdale.
He was born Nov. 6, 1923, in Port Orchard to Al and Thelma (Rooms) Berling. He grew up in Port Orchard.
Mr. Berling served in the Navy for 23 years. He later worked for Hughes Helicopter for 15 years until his retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Geri Berling and Christine Zaborac; one brother, Jack; two grandchildren, Jami Forbes and Kathryn Miller; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel on the Hill.

Peggy Lowney
Ruth "Peggy" Lowney, 80, of Bremerton died Jan. 22, 2000, at her home of natural causes.
She was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Tracyton to James and M. Ethel (Kimball) Lee. She grew up in Bremerton, attending Central Kitsap High School.
She married
John Lowney on Feb. 21, 1951, in Tracyton. He preceded her in death in 1967.
Survivors include two sons, Walter Holland and John Lowney, both of Bremerton; two daughters, Margaret Lowney-Rock and Arlene Henderson, both of Bremerton; two brothers, James and Robert Lee, both of Bremerton; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn, and by a sister, Virginia McCarthy.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Manette Community Church. Arrangements are by Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Marjorie Golnik
Former Port Orchard resident Marjorie Ellen (Reynolds) Golnik, 76, of Las Vegas died Dec. 10, 1999, in Las Vegas of complications from a stroke.
She was born Oct. 17, 1923, in Clearlake to Paul and Geneva Reynolds. She grew up in Port Orchard, attending South Kitsap High School.
She married
Jerome Golnik in 1940. He preceded her in death in 1994.
She managed The Hobby Shop at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard until 1994.
Previously, she worked for Ed Sundt Insurance in Port Orchard and for A&P Van Lines in Gorst.
She was a member of the Port Orchard Eagles and the Fleet Reserve.
Survivors include two sons, Paul of Olalla and Phil of Port Orchard; two daughters, Veronica of Careywood, Idaho, and Dorothy of Las Vegas; two brothers, Jerry of Long Lake and John of Port Orchard; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Marsha.
A memorial service and potluck social are planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Long Lake Park Community Center in Port Orchard. Inurnment took place in the Veterans Administration cemetery in Las Vegas on Dec. 13.

Jessie Hawkins
Jessie M. Hawkins, 96, of Bremerton died Jan. 21, 2000, in Bremerton.
She was born in Bellingham. She married
James A. Hawkins on June 29, 1925. He preceded her in death in 1972.
Mrs. Hawkins was a homemaker and a resident of Seattle for 27 years.
Survivors include one son, Donald; three grandchildren, Steven and Roger Hawkins and Carmen Evans; and four great-grandchildren.
