Lenore Kennedy
Lenore Kennedy, 78, of Bremerton died Jan. 15, 2000, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation of Oyster Bay.
She was born May 1, 1921, in Fort Worth, Texas, where she was raised and educated.
She came to Bremerton in the 1940s, marrying Bill Sutherland. They were later divorced. Their son, Scott, was killed in the Vietnam War.
She later married
Ernest Kennedy. He preceded her in death in September 1999 after 35 years of marriage.
A homemaker, she had worked in bookkeeping, having been employed for several years at the Old City Hand Laundry on Fifth and Warren in Bremerton.
She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 239 Ladies Auxiliary in Bremerton and the American Association of Retired Persons. She was also a Gold Star Mother.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday at the VFW Post 239. Memorial donations may be made to the Kitsap Humane Society.
Helen LaFountaine
Former Bremerton resident Helen E. LaFountaine, 76, of Kelso died Jan. 19, 2000, at St. John Medical Center in Longview.
She was born May 23, 1923, in Long Beach, Calif., to Montereal Jefferson Ramey and Harriet (Peck) Ramey.
Before moving to Kelso in 1987, she lived in Adna and Bremerton, and worked as a caregiver in nursing homes in Centralia and Bremerton.
Mrs. LaFountaine was a homemaker. She was a member of East Kelso Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Michael of Kelso; a daughter, Jane Christian of Longview; two brothers, Monte Ramey of San Diego, Calif., and Tom Ramey of Rainier, Ore.; a sister, Margaret Johnson of Modesto, Calif.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, in 1998.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at East Kelso Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Dahl-McVicker Funeral Home in Kelso.

Peter Lang
Former longtime Bremerton resident Peter Thomas Lang, 73, of Sun City, Ariz., died Jan. 20, 2000, in Sun City of pneumonia.
He was born Jan. 29, 1926, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Harry and Hazel (Castor) Lang. He grew up in Fort Dodge. He had been a resident of Bremerton from 1967 to 1998.
He married
Audrey Sweeney on May 10, 1945, in Jacksonville, Fla. She preceded him in death in 1995.
Mr. Lang served in the Navy from 1943 until his retirement in 1971. He was a lieutenant commander and a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
He was a member of the Retired Officers Association.
He and his wife, Nancy, were married
in November 1998 in Reno, Nev.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Thomas, Richard and Peter, all of Bremerton; one daughter, Mary Ellen of Bremerton; one sister, Loretta Mix of Rock Falls, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Feb. 6 at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel on the Hill. The inurnment location is The Punch Bowl National cemetery in Oahu, Hawaii.
L. Marie McFarland
L. Marie McFarland, 80, of Bremerton, died Jan 23, 2000, at Bremerton Convalescent and Rehabilitation.
She was born July 12, 1919, in York, Neb., to Wilbert and Eathel (Bailey) Sands. She grew up in Nebraska and graduated from Grant High School in Grant, Neb.
She lived in Nebraska, California, Arizona, Texas, Oregon and elsewhere in Washington state, moving to Bremerton in 1989. Mrs. McFarland was a member of Bremerton Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include a daughter, Joan of Bremerton; a grandson, Michael of Anchorage, Alaska; a granddaughter, Christine of Bremerton; and two brothers, Delbert of Springfield, Ore., and Kenneth of Portland, Ore. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, and by a sister, Marjorie.
A memorial service will be at a later date.
Alice Porter
Alice V. Porter, 86, of Tracyton, died Jan. 24, 2000, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center.
She was born Aug. 15, 1913, in Vernal, Utah, to James and Kathleen Smith. She was raised in Colona, Colo., where she graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1931.
She married
Orville Porter in 1936 in Yuma, Ariz. He preceded her in death in 1996.
She moved to Bremerton in 1952, working as a credit clerk for Montgomery-Ward and then for Lents Oil Co. She retired in 1975 after working for Lents for 20 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Dixie Carter of South Colby and Kay Kono of Tracyton; one sister, Phyllis Daniel of Keystone Heights, Fla.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Mike Carter.
Private family interment will be held at Forest Lawn cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be made to Central Kitsap fire and Rescue.
Gerald Berling
Gerald R. Berling, 76, a longtime resident of Kitsap County, died Jan. 22, 2000, in Silverdale.
He was born Nov. 6, 1923, in Port Orchard to Al and Thelma (Rooms) Berling. He grew up in Port Orchard.
Mr. Berling served in the Navy for 23 years. He later worked for Hughes Helicopter for 15 years until his retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Geri Berling and Christine Zaborac; one brother, Jack; two grandchildren, Jami Forbes and Kathryn Miller; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel on the Hill.

Peggy Lowney
Ruth "Peggy" Lowney, 80, of Bremerton died Jan. 22, 2000 at her home of natural causes.
She was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Tracyton, to James and M. Ethel (Kimball) Lee. She grew up in Bremerton, attending Central Kitsap High School.
She married
John Lowney on Feb. 21, 1951, in Tracyton. He preceded her in death in 1967.
Survivors include two sons, Walter Holland and John Lowney, both of Bremerton; two daughters, Margaret Lowney-Rock and Arlene Henderson, both of Bremerton; two brothers, James and Robert Lee, both of Bremerton; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn, and by a sister, Virginia McCarthy.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Manette Community Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Marjorie Golnik
Former Port Orchard resident Marjorie Ellen (Reynolds) Golnik, 76, of Las Vegas died Dec. 10, 1999, in Las Vegas of complications from a stroke.
She was born Oct. 17, 1923, in Clearlake, Wash., to Paul and Geneva Reynolds. She grew up in Port Orchard, attending South Kitsap High School.
She married
Jerome Golnik in 1940. He preceded her in death in 1994.
She managed The Hobby Shop at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard until 1994. Previously, she worked for Ed Sundt Insurance in Port Orchard and for A&P Van Lines in Gorst.
She was a member of the Port Orchard Eagles and the Fleet Reserve.
Survivors include two sons, Paul of Olalla and Phil of Port Orchard; two daughters, Veronica of Careywood, Idaho, and Dorothy of Las Vegas; two brothers, Jerry of Long Lake and John of Port Orchard; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marsha.
A memorial service and potluck social are planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Long Lake Park Community Center in Port Orchard. Inurnment took place in the Veterans Administration cemetery in Las Vegas on Dec. 13, 1999.

Arlys Hewitt
Arlys L. Hewitt, 74, of Lynnwood died Jan. 20, 2000, at Stevens Hospital in Edmonds.
She was born May 25, 1925, in Badger, Minn., to Elmer and Selma (Severson) Setran. She grew up there and graduated from Badger High School in 1943.
She was a member of Elim Lutheran Church in Port Orchard and worked as a secretary there for 22 years, retiring in 1990. She also volunteered at nursing homes.
She is survived by a son, Douglas of Lynnwood; five brothers, Wilmer Setran of Seattle, Conrad Setran of St. Paul, Minn., Donald Setran of Minneapolis, Harold Setran of Lynnwood, and Richard Setran of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Joanne Haugen of Lynnwood; a grandson, Douglas Doble of Port Angeles; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Renae Doble; a granddaughter, Christine Doble; a brother, George Setran; and a sister, Gladyce Wilken.
A visitation will be held from noon to 5 p.m. today at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard and from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Elim Lutheran Church. A funeral service be at the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will follow at Sunset Lane cemetery.

Esther Erickson
Esther Johnsen Erickson, 98, of Bremerton died Jan. 23, 2000, at Ashley Gardens Adult Care Home in Bremerton.
She was born May 13, 1901, in Kilvaer, Norway, to Alfred and Anne (Andersen) Johnsen. She graduated from high school on Vashon Island and received a teaching certificate from Ellensburg Normal School (now Central Washington University).
She married
Fred Erickson in Tacoma. He preceded her in death in 1965.
Mrs. Erickson worked as a bookkeeper at Lawrence and Macon Fuel Company, an oil distribution company, retiring when she was 65. She was a member of the Teamsters Union.
Survivors include two daughters, Willoma Stout of Spokane and Emma Iulo of Bainbridge Island; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fern Hill cemetery in Aberdeen. Arrangements are by Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Dorothy Lesh
Dorothy J. Lesh, 76, of Port Orchard died Jan. 21, 2000, at Ridgemont Terrace in Port Orchard of natural causes.
She was born March 6, 1923, in Lake Linden, Mich., to Ezra Kilmer and Edna Frances Davies.
She married
Joe Lesh on Feb. 20, 1943, in Detroit. She was a homemaker, moving to Port Orchard 25 years ago.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Joe Jr. of Quilcene and Tom of San Juan Island; one daughter, Debra Duryea of Port Orchard; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shine cemetery on Shine Road just past the Hood Canal Bridge.
Ethel Mitchell
Ethel Josephine Mitchell, 77, of Bremerton died Jan. 22, 2000, in Bremerton of natural causes.
She was born July 12, 1922, in San Diego to William Mietzner and Clara (Adams) Stang. She grew up in Bremerton.
She married
Charles Mitchell on Nov. 12, 1947, in Bremerton.
Mrs. Mitchell was a homemaker. She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton, the Kitsap County Fire District Ladies Auxiliary and a longtime member of the West Side Improvement Club. She had also been active in PTA and had been a recipient of the Golden Acorn Award.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Larry of Bremerton; four daughters, Peggy Brown of Rexford, Mont., Mary Cooper of Sumner, Nancy Hannah of Bremerton and Cherry Glover of Port Orchard; two brothers, Leroy Mietzner of Hansville and Robert Mietzner of Torrance, Calif.; three sisters, Amelia Mullen and Eva Caldwell, both of Tacoma, and Pauline Budz of Milton; eight grandchildren, Robin Moilanen of Fairbanks, Alaska, Kent Brown of Albuquerque, N.M., Troy Hannah of Bremerton, Lanette Perrin of Federal Way, Sheila Roman of Sumner, Nikisha Glover of Federal Way and Deion and Taren Glover, both of Port Orchard; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Miller-Woodlawn Chapel on the Hill, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. Interment
will take place at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park immediately after the service.
