John Arnold
John F. Arnold, 85, of Bremerton, died on Jan. 16, 2000, at Bremerton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Curtis, Neb., on June 15, 1914, to John and Maude Arnold. He attended school in Alliance, Neb. and in Chadron, Neb., graduating from the University of Nebraska in 1938.
He was married
in 1940 to Isabelle McNulty in Denver. They lived in Peru, South America, where he was employed by Cerro de Pasco Mining Co., from 1940 to 1953.
From 1953 to 1977, they lived in Salt Lake City, where he was the manager of the Western Mines Division of the Internal Audit Department of Kennecott Copper. He retired in 1977, moving to Green Valley, Ariz., and to Bremerton in 1996.
Mr. Arnold was active in Toastmasters, the Institute of Internal Auditor and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus in Green Valley, Ariz.
Survivors include his wife; one son, John of Clearlake, Calif.; three daughters, Joan Beale of Valencia, Calif., Kathleen Brimer of Bremerton and Gail Dewey of Silverdale; a brother, Dale of Temple, Texas; and five grandchildren, Shawn and Michael Beale and Liz Gregory, all of Valencia; Glen Dewey of Virginia Beach, Va., and Denise Paschal of Seattle; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton at 11 a.m. Friday, with a Rosary preceding at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either Holy Trinity Parish or to Hospice of Kitsap County.
Patricia Putman
Patricia Louise Putman, 62, of Seabeck died Jan. 12, 2000, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center in Bremerton.
She was born Oct. 4, 1937, in Chehalis to Henry and Gladys (Setter) Hanke. She was raised and educated in Chehalis, graduating from Chehalis High School in 1955. She also attended Olympic College.
She married
Robert Putman on Sept. 20, 1957, in Claquato.
Mrs. Putman had worked as a payroll clerk for the lumber mills in Sutherlin, Ore., where she lived for many years. She also had served on the Sutherlin City Council in the late 1970s.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Denise Rawlins of Bremerton; and one sister, Doreen Wixson of Silverdale.
No services are planned. Arrangements are by Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Josephine Underdown-Bartz
Josephine Underdown-Bartz, 87, of Bremerton died Jan. 1, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Dec. 20, 1912, in Michigan.
Her husband, Albert Bartz, preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons, Bill and Monte, both of Bremerton; and four grandchildren, Kelly and Erin, both of Atlanta, Jennifer of Columbus, Ohio, and Jon of Bremerton.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Feb. 26 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in East Bremerton.

Rose Schmieder
Rose U. Schmieder, 94, of Bremerton died Jan. 15, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born April 29, 1905, in Holyoke, Mass., to Patrick and Margaret McDonnell. She was raised and educated in Massachusetts. She was a 1927 graduate of Springfield Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield, Mass.
She married
Earl Schmieder in 1927 in Rhode Island. He preceded her in death in 1959.
Mrs. Schmieder had primarily worked as a nurse at Kent County Memorial Hospital in Warwick, R.I. She retired in 1970 and moved to Washington in 1980. She lived the past four years in Kitsap County.
Survivors include one son, Earl of Rhode Island; three daughters, Jeanne Lavallee of Port Ludlow, Patricia Henry of San Francisco and Paula Morrison of West Warwick; 24 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Olaf's Catholic Church in Poulsbo. Inurnment will take place in Rhode Island. Arrangements are by Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.
Russell Duttry
Russell V. Duttry, 82, of Gig Harbor died Jan. 16, 2000, in Tacoma. He had been a resident of Belfair for 18 years.
He was born Sept. 2, 1917, in Hyde, Pa.
Mr. Duttry was a member of Shelton Methodist Church and the Gypsy Roamer R.V. Club.
Survivors include his wife, Louise; one son, David of Washington; one daughter, Nancy Lotho of Washington; one brother, Robert of Washington; one sister, Fay Kylertown of Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dwight.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Haven of Rest Chapel in Gig Harbor.

Thomas Deem
Thomas E. Deem, 78, of Bremerton died Jan. 14, 2000, in Bremerton.
He was born Dec. 11, 1921, in Parkersburg, W.Va., to Everet and Grace (Goodin) Deem. He grew up in Huntington, W.Va.
Mr. Deem served in the Navy from 1940 to 1946, in Luzon, Philippines, and survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. He received the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal with one star, the Philippine Liberation Medal with one star, the American Defense Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He married
Georgia Hart on Jan. 27, 1943, in Seattle.
Mr. Deem worked as an optical instrument specialist and a chronometer laboratory specialist at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He retired from PSNS after 28 years. The first American space satellite contained optics created by Mr. Deem.
He was a lifetime member of Masonic Temple 117 in Bremerton and a ham radio operator.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Thomas of Bremerton; two daughters, Marie Dilinski and Grace Deem, both of Bremerton; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday at Masonic Temple 117. Inurnment will take place at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Michael Saunders
Michael Dee Saunders, 53, of Bremerton died Jan. 16, 2000, at his home from complications of diabetes.
He was born Dec. 26, 1946, in Vancouver, Wash., to Dave and Alice (Decker) Saunders. He was raised in Battle Ground and in Brush Prairie, graduating from Battle Ground High School in 1965, and from Central Washington University in Ellensburg in 1972.
Mr. Saunders taught in Battle Ground from 1972 to 1978, in the Evergreen School District from 1979 to 1984 and in other districts. He was a vocational education instructor. From 1989 to 1995, he was supervisor of vocational education in the Bremerton School District.
He was a member of Vocational Industrial Clubs of America and the Washington Association of Vocational Administrators. He served on the Washington Council of the Blind and was appointed by the governor to the Advisory Council for the Department of Services for the Blind from 1997 to 1998.
Survivors include his companion, Cindy Wearstler of Bremerton; one son, Matthew of Bremerton; an adopted son, Christopher of Washington; two daughters, Gina Krueger of Bothell and Kelly Saunders of Bremerton; an adopted daughter, Kimberly Jones of Washington; his father; and a sister, Becky Woods of Vancouver.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel with funeral services following at 4 p.m. A funeral service also is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Brush Prairie with interment following in the church cemetery.

Beryl Blackwood
Former Bremerton resident Beryl Blackwood, 89, of Bellevue died Jan. 13, 2000, at Providence Marianwood Care Facility in Issaquah.
She was born June 28, 1910, in Prosser to Stephen and Carrie Davis. She came to Seattle as a young child, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1928.
She worked for Northern Life Insurance as a secretary.
She married
Harold Blackwood on Sept. 9, 1935, in Seattle. The couple moved to Bremerton that year.
In 1957, they moved back to Seattle. In 1976, Mr. Blackwood preceded his wife in death. In 1990, Mrs. Blackwood moved to Bellevue where she became a member of a garden club.
Survivors include two sons, Dick of Bellevue and Ken of Spokane; two daughters, Carol Crow of Bellevue and Roberta Schaffer of Newcastle; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Mona Pennington Johnson, in 1963.
A funeral service was held Monday at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home. A graveside committal is planned for 1 p.m. today at Mountain View cemetery in Auburn.

Irma Koske
Irma Marie Koske, 78, of Bremerton died Jan. 12, 2000, at Keepsake Cottage Adult Family Home in Bremerton of natural causes.
She was born Jan. 30, 1921, in Toledo, Ohio, to Art and Doris (Brown) Lorenzen. She grew up in Toledo, graduating from DeVilbiss High School there in 1938.
She married
Edward Koske Jr. in Toledo in 1943, He preceded her in death in 1972.
She worked as a secretary for American Warming and Ventilating Company in Toledo from 1959 until her retirement in 1984.
Survivors include two sons, Edward III of Silverdale and Richard of Bothell; two brothers, John Lorenzen of Wheaton, Ill., and Rex Lorenzen of Rio Rancho, N.M.; and four grandchildren, Brian of Redmond, Julie of Bellingham and Sarah and Ben, both of Bothell.

Wallace Kippola
Former school board member and community volunteer Wallace G. Kippola, 65, of Poulsbo died Jan. 14, 2000, at his home of cancer.
He was born March 20, 1934, in Bremerton to Matt and Nanny (Nelson) Kippola. He grew up in Poulsbo, graduating from North Kitsap High School in 1951, and from Olympic College in 1955.
Mr. Kippola enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1952, serving as active duty from 1956 to 1958.
He married
Clara Jenkins on Jan. 10, 1959, at the Keyport Chapel.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1951 until his retirement in 1988. He was an engineer supervisor and program manager. He then worked at Anteon Corporation and with Predict DLI on Bainbridge Island, retiring in 1997.
Mr. Kippola had been a leader with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, a Red Cross first aid instructor, a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician, a school board member in both Central Kitsap and North Kitsap, a lay minister at Hansville Community Church and at Lone Rock Chapel in Seabeck, a children's entertainer (magic and ventriloquism) and a volunteer with the Kitsap County Historical Museum.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Gordon of Watertown, N.Y., Karl of College Park, Md., and Steven of Silverdale; one daughter, Diane Bricout of St. Louis; two sisters, Marilyn of Bremerton and Judith Steen of Santa Cruz, Calif.
Interment will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday at Mountain View cemetery in Poulsbo. A funeral service is planned for noon Feb. 12 at the Silverdale Community Center. Arrangements are by Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Henry Blowney
Henry Blowney, 90, of Bremerton died Jan. 15, 2000, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation of Oyster Bay after a long illness.
He was born April 22, 1909, in Mancos, Colo., to Walter and Georgia (Shultz) Blowney. He grew up in Toledo, Ohio, graduating from Libbey High School there in 1928.
He married
Renee Singer on Oct. 12, 1935, in Cleveland.
Mr. Blowney graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1929, from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1934 and from the University of Washington in 1949.
He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1945, stationed in Bainbridge, Md., and in Bremerton. He was a senior chief.
Mr. Blowney taught in the North Kitsap School District for 26 years, retiring in 1971. He taught history at North Kitsap High School from 1945 to 1955 and was principal at Hilder Pearson Elementary School from 1955 to 1971. Previously, he had been a coach and history teacher in Ohio.
He had been a member of Beta Theta Pi, Lambda Chapter, the Bremerton Elks, the American Association of Retired Persons, the National Teachers Retirement Association and a past president and honorary member of the Kitsap Golf and Country Club.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Trudy Carter of St. George, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Wendi Watts of West Valley, Utah, and Laurie LaBarr of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert.
At his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are by Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
