Elizabeth Heaton
Elizabeth Heaton, 83, of Bremerton died Jan. 13, 2000, in Bremerton.
She was born Nov. 2, 1916, in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii, to Antone and Virginia (Rodrigues) Gomes. She grew up in Honolulu and married John Farias there in 1934. After his death, she married Elmer Heaton and moved to Bremerton with him in 1968. He preceded her in death in 1990.
Mrs. Heaton is survived by four sons, Damien and Norman Farias, both of Maui, and Leroy and Lance Farias, both of Louisiana; a daughter, Sharon Nordmark of Port Orchard; a brother, David Mendonca of Kona, Hawaii; two sisters, Margaret Lake of Honolulu and Florence Smith of Bremerton; seven grandchildren, Kathy Hee and D.J. Farias, both of Maui, John-David Farias of Louisiana, Tiffany Parsons of Bremerton, Meggan Nordmark of Tacoma, and Kara and Cody Farias, both of Port Orchard; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Woodlawn Chapel on the Hill.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for time to be given to the sick and elderly in nursing homes.

Erwin Treo
Erwin J. Treo, 72, of Port Orchard died Jan. 14, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born May 26, 1927, in Moulton, Texas, to Frank J. and Mary E. (Rothbauer) Treo. He attended South Kitsap High School.
He worked as a rigger at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, at Boeing Co. and with Evergreens as a brush picker.
He is survived by two sisters, Alice Mikelsen of Port Orchard and Evelyn Williams of Manchester; and six nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rill Chapel. A family graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Knights of Pythias cemetery.

Bernetta Raber
Bernetta Josephine Raber, 79, of Bainbridge Island died Jan. 14, 2000, at Messenger House.
She was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Bellingham to Christ and Clara (Twerdahl) Engebretson. She grew up on Bainbridge Island and graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1938.
She worked as a postal carrier for 18 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Rainbow Advisory Board and the Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary.
Mrs. Raber is survived by her husband, Doug Raber, of Bainbridge Island; a son, Curt of Bainbridge Island; a daughter, Cheryl Bartholomew of Bainbridge Island; two sisters, Sadie Watkinson of Sedro Woolley and Orpha Reinert of Burlington; four grandchildren, Stacy Bigger of Marysville, Tamara Huber of Durango, Colo., and Andrew and Charity Raber, both of Bainbridge Island; and two great-granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be at Kane cemetery.
Arrangements are by Kass Funeral Home.

Flo Leitch
Flossie "Flo" Leitch, 89, of Port Orchard died Jan. 10, 2000, at Port Orchard Care Center.
She was born Nov. 25, 1910, in Chandler, Okla.
She married Francis Eskridge in Tulsa, Okla. in 1932. He preceded her in death.
She married George Leitch in Pomona, Calif., in 1957. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Merrill Eskridge of Garden City, Mo., and Phillip Eskridge of Spokane; one daughter, Carole Taber of Port Orchard; five stepsons, Dick of Moxee, Wash., Bill of Oak Harbor, Dennis of Richland, and Floyd and Larry, both of Yakima; two stepdaughters, Patty Murphy of Yakima and Yvonne Harper of Oregon; 24 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Tuell-McKee Funeral Home of Bremerton.
Memorial donations may be made to Helpline of Port Orchard.

Leonard Marks
Leonard Marks, a former Bremerton fire chief, died in San Clemente, Calif., on Nov. 24, 1999, at the age of 67.
Marks was appointed by Bremerton Mayor Morrie Dawkins as the department's first outside fire chief in August 1984. He served Dawkins, as well as Mayor Gene Lobe, until health reasons caused his retirement in December 1989.
Marks' career in fire service began in 1954 when he became a firefighter for the city of San Jose, Calif. He retired from that department as fire chief in 1973.
While in San Jose, he received his doctorate in public administration from the University of Southern California. He then became a visiting professor at several universities and colleges in the United States.
In December 1978, he was appointed associate superintendent for the National Fire Academy. He later returned to California where he was elected city treasurer of San Clemente in 1980.
He served in this position until his return to the fire service in 1983 as fire chief of Westminster, Calif. He came to Bremerton from Westminster.
Marks co-authored several internationally recognized fire service management books, including the International City Management Association book, "Managing Fire Services." He was also a participant on the Wingspread Commission, a presidential/ Congressional gathering of top minds in fire service to address the nation's fire problems.
Two daughters and grandchildren survive him in California.

Ardell Kurtz
Ardell Vianna Kurtz, 75, of Bremerton died Jan. 13, 2000, in Bremerton after a long bout with cancer.
She was born April 22, 1924, in Crookston, Minn., to Randal Foss and Clara Carlson. She grew up in Crookston, moving to Bremerton in 1942, and graduating from Bremerton High School in 1943.
She worked as a medical assistant in Bremerton for 35 years, retiring from the office of Dr. Ed Graisy in 1988.
She was a member of the Bremerton Ski Cruisers and a medical assistants organization.
Survivors include two daughters, Lynn Hall of Bremerton and Doni Mercer of Port Orchard; three sisters, Florence Bruun of Minnesota, Evangline Huff of Bremerton and Ramona Findley of Arizona; and five grandchildren, Joe Hall and Cameron Mercer, both of California, Ken Hall of Seattle, and Ian and Breanna Mercer, both of Port Orchard. She was preceded in death by a brother, Lowell Foss of Arizona.
At her request, there will be no services.

Charles Schilling
Charles Francis Schilling, 65, of Bremerton died Jan. 13, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 25, 1934, in Hastings, Minn., to Edgar and Mabel (Jeremy) Schilling.
Mr. Schilling served in the Army in the early 1970s.
He had been employed as an outside machinist at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and had been a resident of Kitsap County for the past 30 years. He was a member of the Machinists Union.
Survivors include one son, Duane of Renton; one daughter, Melodie Gren of Spokane; and eight grandchildren.
At his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Audrey Kesterson
Audrey Alma Kesterson, 79, of Poulsbo died Jan. 12, 2000, at her home.
She was born July 6, 1920, in Milwaukee to Emil and Elsie (Gruenewald) Schwechel. She grew up in Milwaukee, graduating from South Division High School in 1929.
She married Joseph Kesterson on Aug. 28, 1946, in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death in 1988.
Mrs. Kesterson was a homemaker. She was a member of Christ Memorial Church in Poulsbo and the Children's Orthopedic Guild of Poulsbo. Her work with the guild included knitting hats and booties for premature babies.
Survivors include one son, Joe of Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Jan Vlieg of Port Ludlow and Maxine Cocking of Lake Forest, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Megan and Melissa Cocking, both of Lake Forest, and Lisa Vlieg of Port Ludlow.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Memorial Church. Inurnment will take place at Fort Rosecrans National cemetery in Point Loma, San Diego. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.

Richard Slocum
Richard Slocum, 77, of Port Orchard and formerly of Alaska, died Jan. 11, 2000, in Port Orchard.
He was born Oct. 6, 1922, in Echo, Minn., to John and Bernice (Lynch) Slocum. He grew up in LaPuente, Calif.
He married Jackie Grindeland on Jan. 4, 1957, in Whittier, Calif.
Mr. Slocum owned Government Hill Market in Alaska and, in retirement, spent many years transporting the elderly for the Salvation Army.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Vickie Gregory and Dawn Hall, both of Dalton, Ga.; one brother, John of Fresno, Calif.; six grandchildren, Rick, Reneé and Brooke Reynolds and Jessica, Lindsey and Amanda Davis; and one great-grandchild.
At his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army.

Patricia Putman
Patricia Louise Putman, 62, of Seabeck died Jan. 12, 2000, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center in Bremerton.
She was born Oct. 4, 1937, in Chehalis to Henry and Gladys (Setter) Hanke. She was raised and educated in Chehalis, graduating from Chehalis High School in 1957. She also attended Olympic College.
She married Robert Putman on Sept. 20, 1957, in Clquets, Wash. They had celebrated 42 years of marriage.
Mrs. Putman had worked as a payroll clerk for the lumber mills in Sutherlin, Ore., where she lived for many years. She also served on the Sutherlin City Council in the late 1970s.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Denise Rawlins of Bremerton; and one sister, Doreen Wixson of Silverdale.
No services are planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Selma Leach
Selma A. Leach, 91, of Port Orchard died Jan. 11, 2000, in Shelton.
She was born Dec. 26, 1908, in Hanlontown, Iowa, to Mikkel and Anna (Sunovol) Susbak. She grew up in Moorhead, Minn.
She married Orville Leach on May 11, 1932, in Minnesota. He preceded her in death in 1950.
Mrs. Leach was a homemaker. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Port Orchard.
Survivors include one son, Orville of Shelton; five daughters, Gloria Bjorkheim, Arlene Nesseth and Jeanette Hovermale, all of Port Orchard, Janice Kittilstved of Spokane and Judith Marr of Milwaukee; one sister, Bernice Muhle of Moorhead; 17 grandchildren, Steven Leach, Deanna Brown, Don, Linda and Michael Johanns, Becky Bittle, David, Daniel and Alan Nesseth, Ron and Mark Hovermale, Carrie Breeding, Greg Marr, Lori Varek, and Kenny, Larry and Dale Kittilstved; 33 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Bonnie Estano, two brothers, Nick and Albert Nelson, and a sister, Inga Carpenter.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel followed by a funeral service at 2:30 p.m. Interment icon will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard. A reception will follow at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Nesseth.
Memorial donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Western Washington Chapter, 192 Nickerson St. Suite 100, Seattle, WA 98109.

Debbie Swedberg
Debbie L. (Pelkey) Swedberg, 44, of Silverdale died Jan. 11, 2000, at Harrison Hospital of cancer.
She was born Sept. 2, 1955, in Akutan, Alaska, to Lillian (McGlashan) Pelkey. She grew up in Kitsap County, graduating from South Kitsap High School in 1974.
She had worked as a certified nurses aid for 12 years with both Northwoods Lodge and Ridgemont Terrace in Port Orchard.
Survivors include her former husband, Leif Swedberg of Seattle; her mother, now of Port Orchard; one daughter, Desiree Fryer of Silverdale; four brothers, Darryl and J. Hugh Pelkey, both of Akutan, Bob Pelkey Jr. of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Ralph Pelkey of Port Orchard; one sister, Mellina Pelkey of Port Orchard; her grandmother, Ivy Frank of Port Orchard; and one grandchild, Bryce Fryer of Silverdale. She was preceded in death by two sons, Christopher Fryer and Thomas Bowls, and by a brother, Neil Pelkey.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. until her funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. Interment icon will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
