Maxine Powell
Former Bremerton resident Maxine (Parr) Powell, 79, of Las Vegas died Dec. 20, 1999, the result of complications from back surgery and pneumonia.
She worked at Harrison Hospital and in doctors' offices in Bremerton for many years. She moved to Renton in the early 1980s and continued working as an
X-ray technician.
She married John Powell in the late 1980s. In the early 1990s, they moved to Las Vegas.
She was preceded in death by her husband and by a son, Larry Parr. She is survived by her former husband, John Parr, and a son, Gary Parr, both of Westport.
At her request, her ashes were scattered in Nevada's Red Park Canyon.

Robert Peterson
Robert R. Peterson, 73, of Port Orchard died Jan. 8, 2000, at his home.
He was born Dec. 24, 1926, in Vancouver, British Columbia, to Johan Robert Peterson and Alice (Johnson) Peterson. He grew up in the Hamma Hamma logging camp and Banner area in Port Orchard, attending South Kitsap High School and graduating from Bremerton High School.
Mr. Peterson completed an apprenticeship at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He worked at PSNS from 1945 until his retirement in 1985. He was an electrician/planner/estimator.
His only employment away from the shipyard included a six-month job for the Bureau of Reclamation in Moses Lake and a few months with The Boeing Co. in Seattle.
Mr. Peterson was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Port Orchard, the Elks in Bremerton, the American Association of Retired Persons, NACO, SKIPS, Bethel Community Church and First Christian Church in Port Orchard. He also had served as a Boy Scout Explorer leader.
Survivors include his wife, Violet; three daughters, Linda Peterson Veach of Silverdale, Terry Peterson Fine of Missouri and Lisa Peterson Ebnet of Ferndale; two sisters, Allene Kvistad of Bremerton and Eileen Morton of Wildcat Lake; one stepbrother, Roy Sweigard of Wenatchee; five grandchildren, Darin Veach and Lori Veach Heyward, both of Silverdale, Deena Davis Misberger and Shane Peck, both of Missouri, and Aaron Davis of Port Orchard; and nine great-grandchildren.
At his request, no services are planned. His body was donated to the University of Washington Medical School.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association of Washington, 2625 Third Ave., Seattle, WA 98212-1213.

Vernon Hammond
Vernon Jerome Hammond, 61, of Bremerton died Jan. 7, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 17, 1938, in Clinton to Vernon and Mary (Wildes) Hammond. He graduated from Central Kitsap High School, joining the Navy soon after.
Mr. Hammond worked as a senior systems analyst for Washington Mutual until his retirement last year.
He was a member of Harley-Davidson Enthusiasts, Local Hog Chapter and the American Motorcycle Association.
Survivors include his companion, Shirley Jaynes of Seattle; one daughter, Loretta Splan of Seattle; one stepson, John of Bremerton; one stepdaughter, Cathy Elting of Lynnwood; six grandchildren, Bradley Lippincott, Christian Splan and Ariel Stamm, all of Seattle, Amanda Carter of Everett and Daniel and Ashley Elting, both of Lynnwood; and one great-grandchild.
No services are planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made at any Washington Mutual branch in Mr. Hammond's name. Donations will be contributed to his favorite charities.

Ina Cheyney
Ina Fay Cheyney, 62, of Seabeck died Jan. 4, 2000, at her home of natural causes.
She was born March 6, 1937, in Mason City to John and Evelyn (Sumner) Steiner. She grew up in Home and graduated from Peninsula High School in Purdy.
She married Thorn Cheyney on May 20, 1955, in Lakebay.
Mrs. Cheyney was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Bruce of Port Orchard; three daughters, Arlene Comer of Bremerton, Debra Bell of Port Orchard and Patricia Pallanes of Silverdale; four brothers, John Steiner of Lake Cushman, Fred and John Beglau, both of Key Center, and Jerry Beglau of Auburn; one sister, Sherri Osinski of Tacoma; six grandchildren, Chastity Brown and Amy Kilham, both of Port Townsend, Jesse Shaw of Bremerton, Mike and John Bray, both of Port Orchard, and Noal Hall Jr. of Ronan, Mont.; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Thorn "Little Thorn" Cheyney III; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Donna.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Kitsap Unit, P.O. Box 2383, Bremerton, WA 98310.

Vincent Martin
Vincent Martin, 94, of Bremerton died Jan. 8, 2000, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center of natural causes.
He was born March 24, 1905, in Hamaukopoko, Maui, Hawaii. He grew up in Hamaukopoko, moving to San Francisco in 1924, and to Bremerton in 1991.
Mr. Martin was a production supervisor with Crown Cork and Seal Corporation in San Francisco. He worked there for 35 years, retiring in 1969.
He married Anita May in Reno, Nev. She preceded him in death in 1971.
Survivors include two sons, Vincent of Bremerton and Robert of Vacaville, Calif.; two daughters, Gloria Gregoire and Priscilla Thornton, both of Bullhead City, Ariz.; one brother, Henry of Livermore, Calif.; three sisters, Lydia Stimmel of Sonoma, Calif., Bella Perry of Daly City, Calif., and Rose DeSoto of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Roberta Fowler
Edna "Roberta" Fowler, 68, of Port Orchard died
Jan. 6, 2000, at Harrison Hospital of cancer.
She was born Sept. 18, 1931, in Indianapolis to Don and Harriet (Fiesel) McMillan. She was raised in Indianapolis by her grandparents, Paul and Ersa Fiesel, graduating from John Strange High School there in 1949.
She married Robert Fowler on Nov. 19, 1952, in Indianapolis. He preceded her in death in 1991.
Mrs. Fowler worked in banking for many years in Indianapolis and in the Puget Sound area, retiring from Puget Sound Bank (now Key Bank) in 1992.
She was a member of a garden club in Port Orchard and was active in Colby United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Barth of Silverdale and Curt of Seattle; one daughter, Ruthanne Enos of Port Orchard; and four grandchildren, Alica and Ariel Fowler, both of Bremerton, Ian Barnett of Federal Way and Bon Barnett of Port Orchard. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Fowler, in 1966 and by her twin brother, Robert McMillan, in 1978.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at Colby United Methodist Church.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Kitsap Unit, P.O. Box 2383, Bremerton, WA 98310, or the Colby United Methodist Church.

Frank Fore
William Franklin "Frank" Fore, 87, who moved from Bremerton to Puyallup in 1999, died there Jan. 7, 2000.
He was born June 3, 1912, in Brookhaven, Miss., to Love Shelby and Mary Lena Fore.
During years of Navy service, he served aboard ships that included USS Proyon, Houston, Nitro, Lexington, Relief, Indianapolis, Acontius, Demter, Marlboro and Pasadena. He participated in nine conflicts and was aboard USS Pasadena when he retired Dec. 9, 1949, in Bremerton.
He lived in Bremerton for the next 50 years before last year's move to Puyallup.
He was a life member of Bremerton Elks, Bremerton Eagles, Navy League and The Retired Officers Association.
He is survived by his wife, Lena, and one daughter, Anita Sadler, both of Port Orchard; and two grandsons, Kevin Root of Kirkland and Sean Root of Homer, Alaska.
A Rosary and funeral Mass will be Wednesday at 10:30 and 11 a.m., respectively, at All-Saints Catholic Church, 509 Third St. SW in Puyallup. Interment, with full military honors, will be at Calvary cemetery in Tacoma.
Memorial contributions can be made to Franciscan Foundation, Franciscan Hospice, P.O. Box 1502, Tacoma, WA 98401-9836.
Arrangements are by Powers Funeral Home in Puyallup.

Willard Doggett
Willard Leroy Doggett, 60, of Port Orchard died Jan. 7, 2000, at Ridgemont Terrace of complications due to cancer.
He was born June 4, 1939, in Wharton, N.J. He grew up in Daytona Beach, Fla., and attended high school there.
He served in the Navy from 1957 to 1961 at Fort Meade in Maryland. He retired from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1996 after 28 years of employment.
He married Anita Louise Shook on July 18, 1975, in Port Orchard.
Mr. Doggett was a member of the Port Orchard Eagles and the V.F.W. of Port Orchard.
He is survived by a son, Jason of Bellevue; two step-sons, Everett Bowling of Seattle and Eric Bowling of Albany, Ore.; two step-daughters, Leonide Martin of Lynnwood and Lynette Burley of Everett; two brothers, Richard of Jacksonville, Fla., and David of Daytona Beach; two sisters, Barbara Clark of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Patty Phipps of Daytona Beach; and six grandchildren, Ryein Bowling, Brittain Bowling, Mitchell Bowling, Alexis Bowling, Renee Martin and Ty Burley. He was preceded in death by his wife.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 20 at Rill Chapel. Inurnment will be at Tahoma National cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 2383, Bremerton, WA 98310.

Ed Gentry
C.E. "Ed" Gentry, 85, of Bremerton died Jan. 6, 2000, at his home.
He was born March 3, 1914, in Fairview, Mo., to Estes and Rachel Gentry. He moved to Idaho when he was 14 and graduated from Filer Rural High School in Filer, Idaho, in 1932. He married LaNora Drake on July 24, 1937, in Boise, Idaho.
Mr. Gentry owned and operated Gentry Construction and Millwork from 1946 until his retirement in 1985.
He was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance and Sylvan Way Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Robert of Bremerton; a daughter, Cherilyn of Bremerton; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 16 at Sylvan Way Baptist Church. Graveside services will be at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Ray Lawrence
Ray Russell Lawrence, 84, of Port Orchard died Jan. 1, 2000, at his home of congestive heart failure.
He was born July 15, 1915, in Lime Springs, Iowa, to Georgiana Lamb. He grew up in Missoula, Mont., graduating from high school there in 1934.
Mr. Lawrence worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for 37 years, retiring in 1979. He worked out of Missoula between Spokane and Helena, Mont.
He attended the Church of the Nazarene in Port Orchard.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Bruce of Missoula; one daughter, Leta Wood of Missoula; two stepsons, Dan Merchant of Ilkeston, England and Doug Merchant of Missoula; three stepdaughters, Judy Hibbard and Cheri Howell, both of Port Orchard and Sally Merchant of Monroe; one brother, Lowell of Victorville, Calif.; six grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 2:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Church of the Nazarene in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Port Orchard Church of the Nazarene or to the Union Gospel Mission in Seattle.

Robert Bankes
Former Bremerton resident Robert O. Bankes, 85, of Tucson, Ariz., died Dec. 18, 1999, in Tucson of heart failure.
He was born Oct. 25, 1914, in Bartlesville, Okla., to Walter and Grace (Heritage) Bankes. He grew up in Sedro-Wooley, graduating from Sedro-Wooley High School in 1932.
Mr. Bankes worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1978. Before his PSNS career, he had built roads on Mount Rainier, driven a cab and an ambulance in Bellingham and had been involved in commercial fishing.
He married Ruth Liebert in San Jose, Calif., in 1979.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Lucinda Warren of Port Orchard, Roberta O'Reilly of Brainerd, Minn., and Delci White of Cullman, Ala.; three stepsons, Micheal and John, both of Tucson, and Charles of San Jose; one stepdaughter, Susan Benhke of San Diego; one sister, Mary Martha Simon of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Birdie Peterson, in 1996.
Inurnment will take place this spring in Bremerton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, Inc., 1501 NW Ninth Ave., Bob Hope Road, Miami, FL 33136-9951.
