Richard Mattson
Richard Mattson, 59, of Port Orchard died Jan. 6, 2000, at his home of natural causes.
He was born May 28, 1940, in Bronx, N.Y., to Joseph and Helen (Campbell) Mattson. He grew up in the Bronx.
Mr. Mattson served in the Army from 1958 to 1960. He was a decontamination operator with the chemical corps.
He married
Deloris Wright on June 3, 1961, in the Bronx.
Mr. Mattson worked as a tube fabricator with Peninsula Tube Bending in Mountain View, Calif. and with Boeing in Seattle. He was more recently a custodian with Johnson Control on the Naval Submarine Base at Bangor for five years, retiring in 1995.
He was a member of Burley-Glenwood Baptist Church in Port Orchard and Paws and Taws Square Dancing Club in Kitsap County. He was a Master Gardener in Kitsap County and a former local cubmaster with Cub Scouts of America.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Richard of Benton City; two daughters, Jane Gentleman and Robyn Mattson, both of Port Orchard; two brothers, Joe of San Diego and William of Groverton, Ind.; one sister, Mildred of Florida; and five grandchildren, Megan, Lacey, Courtney and Benjamin Mattson, all of Benton City, and Bailey Gentleman of Port Orchard. He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
Visitation is scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. Monday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Tuesday also at Rill Chapel. Interment
will follow the service at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard. Valerie Lewis
Valerie K. Lewis, 47, of Bremerton died Dec. 10, 1999, at her home from injuries suffered in an accidental house fire.
She was born April 2, 1952, in Sidney, Mont. She attended school in Fairview, Mont., graduating from high school in 1970. She attended college in Washington, graduating from pharmacy school in 1976.
She had worked as a pharmacist.
She is survived by one brother, Rodger of Las Cruces, N.M. She was preceded death by her parents, Jerry Lewis and Jane Hass.
A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Jan. 14 at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Inurnment will take place at Forest Lawn cemetery.
James West
James West, 59, of Port Orchard died of cancer Dec. 30, 1999, at Kelsey Creek Hospice in Bellevue.
He was born Jan. 27, 1940, in Norman, Okla., to Frank and Amy Lou (Bradley) West. He grew up in the Bakersfield, Calif. area, graduating from Arvin High School in Arvin, Calif., in 1957.
Mr. West served in the Air Force from 1957 to 1967. The Philippines, Korea, Okinawa and Vietnam were among his duty stations.
He married
Elizabeth Ann Funderman on June 17, 1961, in Klamath Falls, Ore. She preceded him in death in 1998.
Mr. West was an auto body repairman for more than 20 years at various body shops in Kitsap County. He later worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 10 years, retiring in 1996.
He was active in fastpitch softball in Washington since 1967. He began his softball career in the Air Force in 1958. He was involved in men's fastpitch from 1967 to 1983, and coached the Bremerton Legionettes Women's Fastpitch team since 1971.
Survivors include one son, Richard, and two daughters, Debra and Barbara, all of Port Orchard.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Richard Masse
Richard Beyrle Masse, 46, of Bremerton died Jan. 1, 2000, in Bremerton.
He was born Jan. 20, 1953, in Long Beach, Calif., to Garth and Roberta (Beyrle) Masse. He graduated from Garden Grove High School in Garden Grove, Calif., in 1971.
Mr. Masse was in the Army from 1971 to 1974. He was stationed in Germany.
He was a student and a retired disabled veteran.
Survivors include his father of Bremerton; one daughter, Jennifer Whittaker of Carmichael, Calif.; one brother, Robert, of Palm Desert, Calif.; and four granddaughters, Laura, Amanda, Ciera and Alyssa Whittaker, all of Carmichael.
No services are planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Earl Smylie
Earl Smylie, 68, of Bainbridge Island died Jan. 4, 2000, in Seattle.
He was born April 24, 1931, in Seattle, to George and Jean (McMann) Smylie.
Mr. Smylie served in the Marine Corps. He was a rural route postal carrier on Bainbridge Island until he retired.
He and his wife, Mabel, were married
in Reno, Nev, . in 1972.
Mr. Smylie was a longtime member of the Shriners and the Scottish Rite.
Survivors include his wife; one son, George of Elma; one daughter, Tarry Decker of Bainbridge Island; and three grandchildren, George Decker of Indianola, Anne Wangthamkua of Bainbridge Island and Mary Swearingen; and one great-granddaughter.
A funeral service is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at the Masonic hall on the corner of High School and Grow roads on Bainbridge Island. Interment
will take place at Kane cemetery on Bainbridge Island. Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bainbridge Island Fire Department.
James Harrison
James F. Harrison, 78, of Belfair, died Jan. 5, 2000, at Harrison Hospital of pulmonary disease.
He was born April 21, 1921, in Missouri, to James and Mary Bell (Landry) Harris Sr. He grew up in Odeboldt, Iowa, attending high school there and attending Drake College in Des Moines, Iowa.
Mr. Harrison was in the Navy from 1942 to 1969, retiring as a lieutenant commander.
He and his wife, Ruth, were married
in March 1979, in San Rafael, Calif.
Mr. Harrison was a member of Kitsap Golf & Country Club.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Jeff of Edmonds; one daughter, Elaine Whaley of Valley Center, Calif.; three stepsons, Jay Robison of Mukilteo and Brad and Grady Robison of Seattle; one stepdaughter, Shelby Robison of Perth, Australia; one sister, Adelaide Erickson of Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren, Maura and Daina Harrison of Edmonds, Jeremy Whaley of Valley Center and Charles Kerber of Kirkland; and one step-grandchild, Erin Robison of Mukilteo.
A memorial service is planned for 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the family home on Hood Canal. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Elaine Davies
Elaine B. Davies, 77, of Bremerton died Jan. 5, 2000, at Forest Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Nov. 21, 1922, in Superior, Wis., to Walter and Ellen (Anderson) Carlson. She moved with her parents to Bremerton in 1940, graduating from Bremerton High School in 1941.
She married
William Buker in 1942. He preceded her in death in 1967.
After graduation from high school, she was a telephone operator for the Bell Telephone System for several years.
In 1971, she married
Rodger Davies in Reno, Nev.
Mrs. Davies was a member of Silverdale Lutheran Church and The Pinochle Club.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Dianne Desert of Grants Pass, Ore.; one stepdaughter, Marilyn Roberts of Marysville; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a son, William Buker, and by a brother, Donald Carlson.
A funeral service is planned for 9 a.m. Saturday at Miller-Woodlawn Chapel on the Hill.

Agnes Fecke
Agnes Fecke, 89, of Bremerton died Jan. 6, 2000, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center in Bremerton.
She was born March 8, 1910, in Kittitas County, to Peter and Elizebeth (Hoidu) Horish. She graduated from Roslyn High School in 1928.
She married
August "Joe" Fecke in Reno, Nev., in 1939. He preceded her in death in May 1999.
She worked at Pier 91 in Seattle and at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard during World War II. She was a homemaker.
She had been active in various political campaigns for presidential elections in Kitsap County. She was a member of the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary Aerie 192 in Bremerton.
She is survived by one sister, Rose, of Pleasant Hill, Calif. She also was preceded in death by four sisters, Ethyl, Mary, Emma and Betty, and two brothers, Peter and Joe.
At her request, her ashes will be scattered in northern Kittitas County. Arrangements are under the direction of Tuell-McKee Funeral Home.
Cora La Duke
Cora Louise La Duke, 73, of Bremerton died Jan. 2, 2000, in Bremerton.
She was born March 31, 1926, in Boise, Idaho, to James and Lorene (DeCloedt) Campbell. She attended school at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton and graduated from Bremerton High School.
A homemaker, she had worked for Pacific Bell Telephone Company.
Survivors include two sons, James of Elk River, Minn., and Richard of Minneapolis; two sisters, Lucille Christiansen and Loraine Brockerman, both of Port Orchard; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation is from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday also at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Burial will take place at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Margaret Vanlue
Margaret Elizabeth Vanlue, 68, of Bremerton died Dec. 23, 1999, in Norristown, Pa.
She was born Aug. 17, 1931, in San Diego to Jay and Margaret (Hudson) Neilson. She grew up in San Diego, graduating from Our Lady of Peace Academy there in 1949, and attended San Diego State University.
She married
Donald Vanlue on Jan. 28, 1951, in San Diego.
Mrs. Vanlue was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Bremerton. She was the granddaughter of The Rev. Harry Hudson, founding rector of St. Paul's.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Donald Jr. of Salem, Ore., Charles of Eugene, Ore., and Michael of Folsom, Calif.; two daughters, Margaret "Peggy" of Cameron Park, Calif., and Kathleen "KC" of Foster City, Calif.; one sister, Marjorie Delorey of Cherry Valley, Calif.; and 16 grandchildren, Jon, Matt, Lisa, Josh, Chris, Caitlyn, William, Mary Beth, Crystal, Andrew, Natasha, Tyler, Aaron, Ashley, Anne and E.J.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Jan. 29 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. A private inurnment will also be held at the church.

Darwin Johnston
Darwin Leslie Johnston, 85, of Bremerton died Jan. 5, 2000, at his home.
He was born July 21, 1914, in Markerville, Alberta, Canada, to Joseph and Anna (Eaton) Johnston. He lived in Canada until he was six years old, coming to Kitsap County in the early 1920s, and graduating from Bremerton High School in 1932.
He married
Marcella Sheets on Aug. 8, 1941, in Bremerton.
Mr. Johnston completed an apprenticeship in cabinet making, becoming self-employed in that field.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Gordon of Bremerton; one daughter, Barbara Coombe of Bremerton; and four grandchildren, Brian Coombe, Jenny Miller and Brianna and Brandon Johnston.
At the family's request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
