Leota Forbes
Leota Esther Forbes, 83, of Port Orchard died Dec. 31, 1999, at her home on Long Lake.
She was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Silverdale to William and Blanche Irish. She grew up in Silverdale, graduating from Silverdale High School in 1934, and received her beautician's license in 1937.
She married Benjamin Forbes in August 1945 in Bremerton. He preceded her in death.
She worked at Ward's Marcel Beauty Shop in Bremerton for 20 years, retiring in 1960.
She and her husband taught round and square dancing. They were members of numerous round and square dancing clubs, as well as the Peninsula Teachers and Callers Association.
Survivors include one brother, Leslie Irish of Vashon Island; and one sister, Margaret Snyder of Port Orchard. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Irish, of Manchester.
A memorial service is planned for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Boyd Markham
Former Port Orchard resident Clyde "Boyd" Markham, 74, of Casa Grande, Ariz., died Dec. 26, 1999.
He was born in Marietta, Ga.
Mr. Markham retired from the Navy after 22 years of active service and from a civil service career with the Department of the Navy. He was a veteran of World War II, serving his enlistment on submarines.
He was a member of the Lions Club, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Eagles and Submarine Veterans of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; one daughter, Marie Bruns of Bremerton; one son,
Jeff of Miami; one brother, Ray of Edmonds; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Opal Nelson
Opal Irene Nelson, 91, of Poulsbo died Dec. 18, 1999, at Martha & Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo of breast cancer.
She was born June 9, 1908, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., to Hugh and Effie (Barton) McKinney. She grew up in Ventura County, Calif.
She married Willis Nelson on May 1, 1924, in Santa Ana, Calif. He preceded her in death in 1991.
Survivors include one son, Ronald of Port Ludlow; three grandchildren in California and four in Washington; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a son, Melvin "Gene, " in 1987; one brother, Paul McKinney; and one sister, Edna (Glimpse) Varner.
At her request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to the Audubon Society.

Janice Cornell
Former Bremerton resident Janice Marie Cornell, 69, of Florence, Ariz., died Nov. 25, 1999, in Chandler, Ariz.
She was born Feb. 11, 1930, in Bremerton. She grew up in Bremerton, attending high school here.
She married Bill Cornell in Bremerton. The couple moved to Arizona in 1971. Mr. Cornell preceded his wife in death in 1996.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Brennan and Deborah Cornell, both of Florence; four grandchildren, Angela, Elena, Bill and James; and four great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her twin sister, Janet Wilson, in 1997.
As per the wishes of Mrs. Cornell and her twin sister, their ashes will be scattered together on the waters of Puget Sound.

Clarence Boschee
Clarence Boschee, 67, of Bremerton died Jan. 2, 2000, at his home.
He was born Jan. 26, 1932, in Wishek, N.D., to Adam and Bertha (Kautz) Boschee.
He grew up on a farm near Wishek and received his education there.
Mr. Boschee married Wilma (Rudolf) Boschee on Feb. 22, 1953, in Wishek.
He was an Army veteran and most recently worked as an automobile mechanic at Thomas Lincoln-Mercury in Bremerton.
Mr. Boschee was a founding member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Brenda J. Dent of Tacoma, Renae M. Herman and Karen K. Carr, both of Bremerton; four brothers, LeRoy of Bismark, N.D., Dr. Floyd of Vermillion, S.D., Reuben of Wishek and Adam of Kindred, N.D.; two sisters, Deloris Zimmerman of Wishek and Shirley Brandt of Gardnerville, Nev.; and six grandchildren, Tiffany and Dwight Boschee, Elizabeth Dent, Amanda and Erika Herman and John Case III. He was preceded in death by two sons, Bruce and Dwight.
Visitation is from 9 a.m to 6 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Lewis Funeral Chapel.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Christ the King Lutheran Church.
Memorial donations may be made to Christ the King Lutheran Church School Building Fund, 8059 Chico Way NW, Bremerton, WA 98312.

Harold Mahle
Harold "Scoop" Mahle, 75, of Kenai, Alaska, died Jan. 1, 2000, at Country Living in Sterling, Alaska.
He was born Oct. 22, 1924, in Anchorage, Alaska, to Paul and Olga (Oskolokoff) Mahle.
Mr. Mahle served in the Army during World War II, from 1944 to 1946. He was a member of American Legion Post 68 in Bremerton.
In 1954, he married Mildred Washington in Washington state. She preceded him in death in 1990.
Survivors include one daughter, Dixie Hess of Bremerton; three sisters, Olga Hilleary, Mabel Spencer and Ida Sigler, all of Kenai; three granddaughters, Christine, Joni and Caniece, all of Mount Vernon; and two great-grandchiIdren, Savannah and Jason. He was also preceded in death an infant son, Raymond.
A memorial service is at 3 p.m. today at Chuda House in Kenai.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association of Alaska, 1057 W Fireweed Lane, Anchorage, AK, 99503-1760. Arrangements are under the direction of Peninsula Memorial Chapel.

Mabel Spiese
Mabel C. Spiese, 85, of Port Orchard died Jan. 3, 2000, at her home.
She was born Feb. 17, 1914, in Reading, Pa., to John and Cora (Kummerer) Leese. She grew up in Reading.
She married Clair Spiese on Dec. 25, 1934, in Reading. He preceded her in death in 1997.
Mrs. Spiese was a telephone operator and church organist in Reading. In 1978, she moved to Port Orchard, where she managed the Village Green Apartments for six years, as well as serving as an organist for Elim Lutheran Church and at Retsil Community Church for the past 17 years
She was a member of Retsil Community Church.
Survivors include one son, Roger of Port Orchard; three grandchildren, Bethany Thorpe and Shane and Heather Spiese; and five great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by four brothers.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Retsil Community Church, followed at 12:30 p.m. by a potluck/luncheon at Kitsap Square Dance Center on the Old Belfair Highway in Gorst. Inurnment will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Kitsap County.

Betty Swenson
Betty M. Swenson, 79, of Poulsbo died Dec. 27, 1999, in Bremerton of natural causes.
She was born May 22, 1920, in Minneapolis. She graduated from Ballard High School.
She was a member of Eagles 3586 in Poulsbo.
Survivors include two sons, Frederick Lowe of San Jose, Calif., and William White of West Richland; two daughters, Loretta Atack of Poulsbo and Roberta Wood of San Jose.
At her request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Perl Maurer
Perl E. Maurer, 93, of Tahuya died Jan. 3, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Dec. 2, 1906, in Hiawatha, Kan., to Park and Lillie (Robinson) Maurer.
He married Ida Mae Mills in 1928. She preceded him in death in 1997 after 69 years of marriage.
He owned and operated Perl's Pavilion in Bremerton from 1934 until he sold the business in 1971. He was also a professional drummer, playing into the 1990s. He was a charter member of the Eagles in Bremerton. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association and the Musicians Union of Seattle.
Survivors include one son, Gary of Kingston; one daughter, Darlene Pendley of Bremerton; six grandchildren, Lisa Jensen, Lynda Bowls and Chad, Christy, Jeremy and Dustin Maurer; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. It will continue on Friday prior to a celebration of life at 1 p.m. also at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Private interment will follow at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Elsie Owens
Elsie Owens, 74, of Poulsbo died Jan. 3, 2000, at her home.
She was born May 24, 1925, in Poulsbo to Matti and Edla Kainulainen. She grew up in Poulsbo, graduating from North Kitsap High School in 1943.
She married Jim Owens on July 3, 1948, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Bremerton.
Mrs. Owens worked as a secretary at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1944 to 1950, and as a library assistant at North Kitsap High in the 1960s and '70s.
She was a longtime member of Vinland Lutheran Church in Poulsbo. She served as organist there for more than 25 years.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Jim III of Poulsbo; two daughters, Kathy Rowland of Poulsbo and Amy Corbley of Bothell; one sister, Laura Nicodemus of Poulsbo; five grandchildren, Kyle Rowland of New Jersey, Kelly Rowland of Bellingham and Garrett and Brett Owens and Kasey Rowland, all of Poulsbo. She was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel. A memorial service is at 1 p.m. Friday at Vinland Lutheran Church. Private interment will take place at Vinland Church cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Vinland Lutheran Church, 2750 Finn Hill Road NW, Poulsbo, WA 98370.

Cora La Duke
Cora Louise La Duke, 73, of Bremerton died Jan. 2, 2000, in Bremerton.
She was born March 31, 1926, in Boise, Idaho, to James and Lorene (DeCloedt) Campbell. She attended school at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton and graduated from Bremerton High School.
A homemaker, she had worked for Pacific Bell Telephone Company.
Survivors include two sons, James of Elk River, Minn., and Richard of Minneapolis; two sisters, Lucille Christiansen and Loraine Brockerman, both of Port Orchard; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.
Visitation is from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday also at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Burial will take place at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
