Philip Ruppert
Philip Adam Ruppert, 93, of Port Orchard died of natural causes Dec. 17, 2000, in Port Orchard.
He was born April 17, 1907, in Sunnyside to Philip A. and Annie (Daniels) Ruppert. He attended high school in Sunnyside.
He married
Lillian Oberts on June 24, 1937. She preceded him in death in 1987.
Mr. Ruppert managed the family cattle ranch in Sunnyside, retiring in 1972.
He was a member of Gideons International and the Sequim Bible Church.
Survivors include two sons, Donald L. of Seattle, and James D. of Port Orchard; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, David and Frank; and a sister, Mary Oberst.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Sequim Bible Church. Inurnment will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside. Arrangements are under the direction of Sequim Valley Chapel.

Hazel Hoepner
Olympia resident Hazel M. Hoepner, 99 and formerly of Olalla, died of natural causes Dec. 13, 2000, at Puget Sound Healthcare Center, Olympia.
She was born April 21, 1901, in LaVerne, Minn., to Herbert and Marie (Maurice) Hall.
She married
Adolf Hoepner on Sept. 7, 1921. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hoepner was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and her grandchildren.
She was a member of Olalla Grange and Lacey Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a son, Rodney of Durham, N.C.; two daughters, Evelyn White of Sun City, Ariz., and Cherie Wiseman of Olympia; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Dec. 16, at Olympic Funeral Home, Tumwater. Interment
will be at Haven of Rest, Gig Harbor.
Lloyd Johnson
Lloyd M. Johnson, 90, of Bremerton, died Dec. 14, 2000, at the Sun Bridge Care and Rehabilitation Center of Oyster Bay.
He was born Nov. 22, 1910, in Garfield, Minn., to Olaf and Minnie (Hanson) Johnson.
He was a painter for the Bremerton school district for 33 years, retiring in 1973.
He was a member of Eagles and Sons of Norway. He was a member of the Lutheran church.
Survivors include his wife Evelyn of Bremerton.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Red McFather
Willie "Red" McFather, 78, of Port Orchard died of congestive heart failure
Dec. 17, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born March 30, 1922, in Moultire, Ga., to William and Dora (Miles) McFather. He attended high school in Tampa Bay, Fla.
He married
Kay McQuitty on March 30, 1946, in Reno, Nev. She preceded him in death in 1989. He married
Mildred Meyers on Sept. 15, 1995, in Shelton.
He served in the Navy from 1941 through 1961, achieving the rank of petty officer first class. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and World War II Medal.
He was a lab technician at the Naval Hospital for 15 years, retiring in 1976.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and enjoyed cars. He was a member of the Protestant church.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Karen Darling of Port Orchard and Sharon McFather of Bremerton; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 1:30 p.m. Friday at Rill Chapel. Interment
will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery.
Esther Slater
Esther M. Slater, 68, of Bremerton, died after a lengthy illness Dec. 13, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born May 24, 1932, in Balco, Okla., to Benjamin and Elsie (Henry) Slater. She graduated in 1950 from Darrington High School in Darrington.
She worked as a computer operator at Keyport for 20 years, retiring in 1991.
She was a member of Kitsap Lake Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Douglas R. Slater of Bremerton; a brother, Roland Slater of Port Orchard; a sister, Laura Pierce of Bremerton; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alzada Frost; and a brother, Harold Slater.
A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday at Kitsap Lake Baptist Church in Bremerton. Arrangements are under the direction of Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society.

Hattie Laxson
Hattie May Laxson, 91, died Dec. 18, 2000, at her Burley residence.
She was born July 20, 1909, in Berino, N.J., to Charles and Mallie Sykes. She graduated in 1929 from Union High School in Las Cruces, N.M., and attended a teachers college.
She married
Jesse Laxson on Oct. 10, 1931. He preceded her in death in 1990.
She taught school for two years. She served as postmaster of the Burley post office for 17 years, retiring in 1969.
She enjoyed her family and friends. She was a member of Port Orchard Assembly of God.
Survivors include a son, Paul of Spokane; four daughters, Jerry Burton and Barbara Castroni, both of Burley, Jessie Conley of Portland, Ore., and Edna Gaddis of Sendoro, Texas; two brothers, Dewey of Arizona and Walter of California; two sisters, Bessie Laxson of Seattle and Maxine Cunningham of California; 20 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Burton.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Haven of Rest Chapel in Gig Harbor. Interment
will take place at Haven of Rest Memorial Park.
Alice Harris
Alice Henry Harris, 83, died Dec. 15, 2000, at her Bainbridge Island home.
She was born Dec. 21, 1916, in Roseburg, Ore., to Andrew and Ida Isaacson. She graduated in 1935 from Republic High School in Republic. She attended the University of Washington for two years.
She served with the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service during World War II.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed reading. She was a member of Eastern Star.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan Harris of Bainbridge Island; and three grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home. A memorial service and inurnment will take place in Goldendale.
Colton Ells
Colton Dean Ells, one day old, died in Silverdale Dec. 15, 2000, of a congenital heart defect.
He was born Dec. 14, 2000, in Silverdale to Robert and Sharon (Hughes) Ells of Port Orchard.
Other survivors include his brother Jeffrey and sister Kelsie of the family home; grandparents Darlene and Bill Rentz, Bessie Ells and Mack and Sherrie Hughes, all of Port Orchard.
Funeral services will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Port Orchard Church of the Nazarene with interment at Sunset Lane cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist at Rill Chapel.

Elizabeth Anderson
Elizabeth Anderson, 97, of Bremerton died Dec. 12, 2000, in Bremerton.
She was born Jan. 7, 1903, in Currahean County Cork, Ireland, to Robert and Catherine (Talbot) Anderson. She graduated from National School in Castle Island, Ireland. She graduated from Alexander College in Dublin, Ireland.
She was a member of the Allied High Command in Germany following World War II. Ms. Anderson was a caregiver at the Washington Retsil Home for 30 years, retiring in 1966.
She was a founder of the Kitsap County Women's British and Commonwealth Club. She was a member of the Anglican faith.
Survivors include a sister, Agnes Ludlow of Kinsale, Ireland. She was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Anderson of Ireland.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m to 2 p. m. Tuesday at Pendleton-Gilghrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rill Chapel. A reception in the hospitality room will follow.
Kathryn Fischer
Kathryn Frances Fischer, 85, of Bremerton died Dec. 11, 2000, in Bremerton.
She was born Oct. 11, 1915, in Seattle to Robert and Bertha (Huber) Laing. She was a 1933 graduate of Broadway High School in Seattle.
She married
J. Edward Fischer on March 19, 1937, in Seattle.
She was a member of the Homemakers Club and enjoyed Scrabble. She was a Catholic.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Ed G. Fischer of Bremerton; three daughters, Judy K. Drake of Littleton, Colo., Mary L. Millspaugh and Irene L. Aylward, both of Bremerton; a brother, Bruce C. Laing of Bellevue; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death in 1992 by a brother, Robert H. Laing, and in 1997 by a sister, Elizabeth P. Hoberecht.
Visitation is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday at Holy Trinity. A Mass will follow at 11 a.m. Monday's visitation. A graveside service will take place at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Jan Kasten
Jeanette "Jan" Kasten, 60, died Dec. 9, 2000, at her Bremerton residence.
She was born Aug. 4, 1940, in Bellingham to Richard and Irene Elliot.
She worked at Harrison Hospital for 20 years, retiring as the most senior housekeeper.
She enjoyed her grandchildren and following her son's music career.
Survivors include two sons, Vince Martin of Port Orchard and Parris Shepard of Belfair; two daughters, Tracy Martin of Bremerton and Annie Martin of Arizona; a brother, Richard Elliott of Bellingham; a sister, Leslie Spritsma of Tacoma; and 11 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, William Martin.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Lewis Funeral Home.
Greg Sammeli
Gregory "Greg" Sammeli, 19, of Bremerton died in an automobile accident Dec. 12, 2000, in Belfair.
He was born April 16, 1981, in Bremerton to Ray and Betty (Kramer) Sammeli.
He was a senior at South Kitsap High School in Port Orchard.
He was an auto mechanic at Davis Motor Sports in Bremerton. He enjoyed four-wheel drive vehicles and working on cars.
He is survived by his parents; a brother, Raymond of Gorst; three sisters, Torrie Prante, Sheila McCoy and Sandy Sammeli, all of Bremerton; and paternal grandparents, Wesley and Ann Sammeli of Bremerton.
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. Interment
will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
