J. Michael Allen Jr.
J. Michael "Mike" Allen Jr., 30, of Port Orchard died Aug. 6, 1998.
He was born June 14, 1968, in Ajo, Ariz. He attended Ajo High School.
For the past 10 years he was a framer in the construction business.
Survivors include his companion, Kim Zaccagnini of Port Orchard; his parents, J. Michael and Debra Allen of Newark, Del. and Tricia and Mike Holt of Ajo; a daughter, Tracy of Port Orchard; a brother, Todd of Port Orchard; a sister, Amy Berndt of Ajo; and his grandparents, Jean and Rex Moss of Tucson, Ariz., and Hazel Ivey of Ajo.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 11, with funeral services following at 4 p.m. at Rill Chapel. Graveside services and interment will be in Ajo.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Bettie Hess
Bettie Ruth Hess, 58, of Bremerton died Aug. 8, 1998, of cancer.
She was born May 18, 1940, in Bremerton to Harriet Ruth (Lombard) Tompkins. She was raised in Bremerton and graduated from West High School in 1958.
On Sept. 27, 1958, she married
Richard E. Hess in Bremerton.
Mrs. Hess had worked as an associate with Goldberg's Jewelers in Silverdale and co-operated B-J's Burgers and Things, also in Silverdale.
Mrs. Hess was a certified Diamontologist with the Diamond Council of America and a member of the Poulsbo Yacht Club.
Survivors include her husband; her mother; a son, James of Bremerton, a daughter, Kathleen Johnson of Gig Harbor; a brother, Frank Cooper of Bremerton; a sister, Roberta Cooper of Bremerton; and two grandchildren, Nick of Gig Harbor and Courtney of Bremerton.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Aug. 19 at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Joe Burney
Joe W. Burney, 57, of Onalaska died Aug. 1, 1998, of colon cancer, at Capital Medical Center.
He was born May 1, 1941, in Tucumcari, N.M., to Thomas and Orelia (Bernhardt) Burney. He graduated from Flagstaff (Ariz.) High School in 1959.
Mr. Burney served in the Marine Corps. He received a good conduct medal. He later made his living as an instrument mechanic at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center at Keyport until his retirement in 1996.
He was a member of the Eagles.
Survivors include a son, Ty of Silverdale; two brothers, Gene of Kent and Steven of Chehalis; and two sisters, Doris Kernodle of Sandpoint, Idaho, and Maxine Ramey of Silverdale.
At his request, there will be no services.

Marvin Swanlund
Marvin Andrew Swanlund, 77, of Bremerton died Aug. 8, 1998, at Bremerton Convalescent Center.
He was born March 11, 1921, in Maniton County, Minn., to Fabian and Beta (Anderson) Swanlund. He was raised in the Detroit Lakes, Minn., area.
On June 30, 1968, he married
Ruth Nelson in Shelton.
Mr. Swanlund came to Bremerton in 1955 and worked at Lent's until 1959 when he started his own business, Custom Heating and Sheetmetal, in Poulsbo. He ran the business, along with his wife, until his retirement in 1985.
Survivors include his wife; two stepsons, Rock Beachem of Port Orchard and Charlie Beachem of Friday Harbor; five grandchildren, Don, Carrie, Renee, Jason and Jeremie; nine stepgrandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sons, Dave, Dick and Don.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 15 at Silverdale United Methodist Church, 9982 Silverdale Way NW.
Cremation and inurnment will be at Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Harlan Parker
Harlan Dean Parker, 75, of Silverdale died Aug 10, 1998, at his home.
He was born Feb. 7, 1923, in Manette to Harlan and Emma (Hubbell) Parker.
He married
Gertrude Larkin and she preceded him in death. On July 1, 1949, he married
Irene Thomas in Silverdale.
Mr. Parker served in the Army in Europe from 1944 to 1945. He worked as a heavy-equipment operator for several different construction companies and then went into business for himself.
He was a member of Local Operating Engineers No. 302.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary and Donald, both of Silverdale; a daughter, Geraldine House of Reno, Nev.; six grandchildren, Stephanie, Kathleen, Gregory, Steven, Brian and Gregory; and one stepgreat-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a daughter, Cynthia.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Aug. 14 at the Bremerton Church of the Nazarene, 924 Sheridan Road, with cremation and inurnment at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Mary McMahon
Mary Christine McMahon, 62, of Gig Harbor passed away Aug. 3, 1998.
She was born Dec. 24, 1935, in Vici, Okla. to Art and Minnie Marler. She moved to Bremerton in 1953.
On June 15, 1954, she married
Lawrence McMahon. He preceded her in death in 1984.
Mrs. McMahon worked at many places in the Bremerton area;, including J.C. Penney's, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, banks, and most recently, at Keyport where she retired after her husband's death.
She was active in Hospice and the Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church in Gig Harbor.
Survivors include two sons, Kevin of Tacoma and Charles of Dayton, Ohio; a daughter, Lindy, also of Dayton; two grandchildren, Dan and Jeff, both of Ohio; eight sisters, Margaret Hazen, Wilma Benskin and Lorena Kinsey, all of Woodward, Okla., Viola Hall of Louisiana, Dorothy McAfee of Puyallup, Maxine Williams of Port Orchard, Edith Kienest and Wanda Marler, both of Tacoma; two brothers, Melvin of Pahrump, Nev., and Dwayne of Oklahoma City, Okla.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Aug. 14 at Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church, Gig Harbor.

Scott Bagley
Scott William Bagley, 24, of Bremerton died Aug. 7, 1998.
He was born May 28, 1974, in Bremerton to Jane Bagley. He graduated from Central Kitsap High School in 1992.
Scott was a student, and planned to attend the Culinary Institute in Seattle.
He is survived by his mother; aunts; uncles; and cousins.
Funeral services will be at noon, Aug. 12 at the Suquamish Tribal Center with interment at Suquamish cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.
James Griffiths
James J. Griffiths, 64, of Seabeck died Aug 8, 1998, at his home.
He was born Oct. 11, 1933, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to James and Myrtle (Hammersley) Griffiths. He graduated from high school in Ottumwa.
On Nov. 18, 1950, he married
Florine Albertson in Lancaster, Mo.
Mr. Griffiths served in the Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954. He received a Korean service medal, a United Nations service medal and a National Defense service medal. He achieved the rank of private first class.
He had worked at Bangor, but most recently he owned Northwest Septic and Development until retiring in 1997.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 269 in Ottumwa, Iowa.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Christopher of Seabeck; five daughters, Mary Barrett of Port Orchard, Jane Park of Seabeck, Carol Davis of Republic, Diana Byrd and Virginia Green, both of Bremerton; three brothers, George, David, and Richard, all of Iowa; two sisters, June Cain and Barbara Freed, both of Iowa; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry, in 1997.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 11., with funeral services at 2 p.m. Aug. 12 and interment following services at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Archie Brown
Archie E. Brown, 79, of Port Orchard died Aug. 7, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 11, 1919, in Minco, Okla. to Charlie and Edna Mae (Hunt) Brown.
On May 18, 1940, he married
Helen Rashic in El Reno, Okla.
Mr. Brown worked for Lofthus Oil which was bought by Service Fuel. He worked 34 years for Service Fuel until his retirement in 1981.
Mr. Brown was a member of the Teamster's Local No. 589, the Musician's Association of Seattle Local No. 76, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie No. 2338, the Washington Old Time Fiddler's Association, various cutting house clubs, and a past member of the American Quarter Horse Association.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Charlie and Eddie, both of Bremerton; a daughter, CheChe Murphy of Tampa, Fla., a brother, Charles of Mabton; four sisters, Marie Morrison of Union City, Okla., Lela Maples and Anna Lou Gabehart, both of Minco, Okla., and Erma Harrison of Chickasha, Okla.; eight grandchildren, Matt Murphy of Port Orchard, Mike Murphy of Pullman, Mary Thompson of Oak Harbor, Katie Becker of Honolulu, Hawaii, Tod McGee of Bremerton, Marc Brown, Erik Brown and Jennifer Murphy, all of S eatt le; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 12, with funeral services at 1 p.m. Aug 13 at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. Interment
at 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at Miller-Woodlawn cemetery.
