Lou Messenger
Former Bremerton resident Lou J. Messenger, 57, of Seattle died Nov. 3, 2000, in Seattle.
He was born Nov. 9, 1942, in Seattle. He graduated from East Bremerton High School in 1962 and attended Olympic College and Seattle Pacific University.
Mr. Messenger served in the Army from 1968 to 1971, achieving the rank of specialist fifth class. He received a National Defense Medal and Army Commendation Medal.
He worked as a federal police officer.
Mr. Messenger enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Eva and James White, both of Bremerton.
Service arrangements are pending.
Berniece Burns
Berniece H. Burns, 88, of Bremerton died of natural causes Nov. 5, 2000, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation of Oyster Bay.
She was born May 27, 1912, in Enderby, British Columbia, to George Henry and Eva (Iland) Carleton. She graduated from West Seattle High School in 1930.
She married
John Lloyd Burns in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, in 1947. He preceded her in death in 1966.
Mrs. Burns was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed playing bingo.
Survivors include a son, George C. Russell of Oregon; three daughters, Dianne Deignan Arthur of Bremerton, Sharron C. Dawson of San Clemente, Calif., and Lynnda Ruiz of Las Vegas; 20 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
At her request, there will be no service. Interment
will take place at Fort Rosecrans National cemetery in Point Loma, Calif. Arrangements are under the direction of Tuell-McKee Funeral Home.
Elfa Thoemke
Elfa E. Thoemke, 92, of Bremerton died Nov. 1, 2000, at Later Years Adult Family Home of natural causes.
She was born June 24, 1908, in Emmett, N.D., to Herman and Mary (Uhlig) Persey. She graduated from Salem High School in Salem, Ore., in 1925, and attended the University of Oregon.
She married
Harold J. Thoemke in October of 1983, in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Mrs. Thoemke enjoyed traveling and Bible study. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include two stepsons, Howard Thoemke of Silverdale and Donald Thoemke of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and six step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Watson; and her brother, Harold Persey.
At her request, there will be no service. Inurnment will take place at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Everett. Arrangements are by Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Marie Campbell
Marie V. Campbell, 77, of Poulsbo died Nov. 2, 2000, at her home of cancer.
She was born Aug. 3, 1923, in Baker, Ore., to Fred V. and Violet L. (Gear) Doninger. She graduated from Bremerton High School in 1942 and attended the University of Wash-ington.
She married
Creigh C. Campbell on Dec. 18, 1948, in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1991.
Mrs. Campbell was a correctional caseworker for the state of Washington for 18 years, retiring in 1985.
She enjoyed gardening and swimming.
Survivors include a son, Clinton of Poulsbo; a daughter, Camille Williams of Bothell; a brother, Roy of Port Angeles; and three grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held. Arrangements are by Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Ida Flockhart
Former Bremerton resident Ida Theresa Flockhart, 85, of Lakewood died Nov. 2, 2000, at St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood.
She was born Aug. 8, 1915, in Hebron, N.D., to Johan and Juliana (Burkhart) Weber.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed reading romantic novels and gardening.
Survivors include two sons, William of Bremerton and Don of Land of Lakes, Fla.; a daughter, Elvenia King of Spanaway; a sister, Ruth Wittman of Minnesota; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Flockhart, in 1975; and two sons, Steven Flockhart and Arnold Lautt.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A graveside service is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Lynn Simons
Lynn Raymond Simons, 77, of Bremerton died Nov. 2, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 12, 1923, in Silverdale, to John and Minnie (Farrow) Simons. He graduated in 1941 from Central Kitsap High School.
He married
Dorothy Quaintance on Sept. 23, 1942, in Enumclaw.
Mr. Simons was a battalion fire chief at the Bremerton Fire Department for 25 years, retiring in 1972.
He was a member of the Christian church. He enjoyed golf and baseball.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John of Dillon, Mont., and Bill of Bremerton; a daughter, Cheryl Rezac of Poulsbo; a sister, Gladys Rigness of Bremerton; a brother, Jack of Sequim; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert, in 1998; four brothers, Wilbur, Sheridan, Theodore and Maurice; and a sister, Helen Simons.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis Chapel. Interment
will take place at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Carol White
Former Bremerton resident Carol A. White, 63, of Tacoma died of natural causes Oct. 27, 2000, at her residence.
She was born June 26, 1937, in Hoquiam to William Donovan and Gladyse Amanda (Van Kleek) Hoover. She graduated in 1955 from Hoquiam High School.
Mrs. White served in the Navy from 1955 to 1957.
She married
James N. White on Aug. 3, 1957. They divorced in 1989.
She was a caregiver for Catholic Community Services in Bremerton.
Survivors include a son, Scott of Tacoma; a sister, Mary H. Moran of Aberdeen; and one grandchild.
A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Monday at Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam. Arrangements are under the direction of Coleman Mortuary of Hoquiam.
Kin Barcinas
Joaquin C. "Kin" Barcinas, 49, of Port Orchard died Oct. 21, 2000, on the Key Peninsula.
He was born Jan. 26, 1951, in Agana, Guam, to Ignacio T. and Angelina (Chargaulaf) Barcinas. He attended schools in Guam and graduated from high school in California.
Mr. Barcinas served in the Army for four years and in the Marine Corps for seven years.
He worked at a ship repair facility in Guam and at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 25 years.
Mr. Barcinas enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah (Ilek) Barcinas; a son, Kin Jr. of Guam; two daughters, Airman Melissa Ann Barcinas of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and Thea Jean Barcinas of Guam; four brothers, Johnny, Jose and Ignacio, all of Guam, and Jesus of Vancouver, Wash.; and three sisters, Rosa Gofigan, Annie San Nicolas and Maria Reyes.
Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Thelma Savage
Thelma L. Savage, 99, of Southworth died of natural causes Oct. 7, 2000, in Southworth.
She was born March 7, 1901, in Dayton to Thomas and Victa (Cox) Yeo.
She married
A. Judson Savage on Feb. 7, 1962, in Las Vegas. He preceded her in death in 1999.
She was a cosmetic buyer for Frederick & Nelson in Seattle for 32 years, retiring in 1964.
She enjoyed gardening, particularly roses.
Survivors include three nephews, Ralph Presnell of Honolulu, Jack May of Kirkland and Dan May of Edmonds; two nieces, Dorothy Lumsden of Tacoma and Nancy Rogers of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; and a cousin, Ward Rasmus of Pleasant Hill, Calif.
Neva Vetters
Neva Dorean Vetters, 75, of Port Orchard died Oct. 29, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Aug. 5, 1925, in McCulloch, Texas, to Roy and Carrie May.
She married
Virgil Vetters on Nov. 4, 1945, in Port Orchard. He preceded her in death in 1997.
She was a member of the Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include a son, Fred of Port Orchard; three daughters, Rose Davis and Linda Vetters, both of Gig Harbor and Susie Havens of Lynnwood; a brother, Marion Cass May of Coarse Gold, Calif.; a sister, Juanita Walberg of Port Orchard; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Cletus, and a sister, Jeannie.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Nov. 11 at Bethany Lutheran Church on Tremont in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Tuell-McKee of Bremerton.

Yaeko Hays
May "Yaeko" Hays, 77, of Bremerton died Oct. 31, 2000, at her home.
She was born May 10, 1923, in Mito, Japan, to Tunikichi and Tau Hara. She was educated in Japan.
She married
Dwayne E. Hays on Nov. 15, 1962, in Tokyo.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and dollmaking.
Survivors include her husband; a sister, Chiyo Hara of Japan; and a brother, also of Japan.
A private graveside service will be held Monday at Forest Lawn cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Frieda Kinder
Frieda M. Kinder, 64, of Bremerton died Oct. 31, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma.
She was born May 15, 1936, in Denver, to Roy and Mary (Beard) Riedl.
She married
Calvin T. Kinder Jr. on Jan. 11, 1962, in Casper, Wyo. He preceded her in death in 1989.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed bingo and crafts. She was a member of West Side Baptist Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include two sons, Rocky Obert of Bremerton, and Jimmie Obert of Belfair; a daughter, Sharron Scheibner and Joella Shattun, both of Bremerton; three brothers, Fred, her twin, and Michael Riedl, both of Albuquerque, N.M., and Ronald Riedl of Georgia; six sisters, Wilma Condit of California, Dorothy Wintermute of Albuquerque, N.M., Sharron Mitchell of Denver, Colo., Sharon Gattis and Wayna Rich, both of Las Cruces, N.M., and Linda Brenner of Fresno, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
A memorial service and potluck is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bremerton Eagles, 205 Sixth St. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
