Emmett Younker
Emmett B. Younker, 87, of Poulsbo died of natural causes Sept. 11, 2000, at his home.
He was born Aug. 1, 1913, in Naples, Neb., to William and Meda Younker. He attended high school in Naples.
He married
Lilyan Scharpf on July 25, 1933, in Tacoma.
Mr. Younker served in the Navy for two years.
He was a well-driller and ran a saw mill for 71 years.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, JoAnn Blakeslee of Poulsbo and Jeanette Davidson of Seabeck; a sister, June Walston of Puyallup; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. today through Saturday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Theodore Holmes
Theodore B. Holmes, 77, of Bremerton, died Sept. 9, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 23, 1923, in Enid, Okla., to Arlington and Beulah (Burns) Holmes. He graduated from Wapato High School in Wapato in 1941.
He married
Beatrice Nickons in Bremerton. She preceded him in death in 1972. He then married
Jane (Hartford) Crump on Dec. 14, 1974.
Mr. Holmes served in the Army during World War II and remained in the Army reserve until his retirement as a sergeant major in 1983.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as an electrician for 33 years, retiring in 1974.
Mr. Holmes enjoyed traveling with his wife. He was a member of Good Sam Club and Lincoln Avenue Bible Church.
Survivors include his wife; two stepsons, Robert Crump of University Place and Kenneth Crump of Edinburg, Scotland; a daughter, Joette Murphy of Crawfordsville, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Suzanne Alpacino of Silverdale; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Cody.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at Lincoln Avenue Bible Church in Bremerton. A private graveside service will take place at Forest Lawn cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Helen Ford
Helen M. Ford, 98, of Bremerton, died Sept. 9, 2000, in Bremerton.
She was born June 26, 1902, in Leavenworth.
Mrs. Ford enjoyed sewing. She was a member of the Catholic church.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Tomassi of Silverdale; 11 grandchildren; and numerous greatgrand-children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emery Ford, in 1983; a daughter, Marjorie; a son, James; and a sister, Olive Bengtson.
A mem-orial Mass will take place in Portland, Ore., on Monday.

Juanita Kappelman
Juanita Emily Kappelman, 83, of Port Townsend died Sept. 2, 2000, at Kah Tai Care Center in Port Townsend.
She was born in Olympia on March 5, 1917, to Walter E. and Emily M. (Dixon) Padgett. She graduated from Raymond High School in Raymond in 1935.
She married
Fred C. Kappelman on July 26, 1958, in Long Beach, Calif. He preceded her in death in 1995.
Mrs. Kappelman worked as a clerk for the federal government at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Sand Point Naval Air Station in Seattle and Naval Submarine Base Bangor for 27 years, retiring in 1981.
She enjoyed cats and collecting knick-knacks.
Survivors include a son, Richard Williams of Kent; a daughter, DelLane Marie Duval of Wells, Nev.; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred Afden.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kosec Funeral Home in Port Townsend.

Arlene Bartel
Former Manchester resident Arlene C. Bartel, 63, of Vancouver, Wash., died of heart failure Sept. 8, 2000, at her home.
She was born Dec. 15, 1936, in Kellogg, Idaho, to Clarence M. and Wyoming (Ellis) Thompson. She attended South Kitsap High School and then graduated from Vancouver High School in 1954. She attended Vancouver Business College.
Mrs. Bartel was a homemaker and artist for more than 30 years.
She enjoyed woodworking and crafts.
Survivors include her mother of Vancouver; four sons, Scot Dupre of Vancouver, Leigh Bartel of Campbell River, B.C., Tim Bartel of Lethbridge, Alberta, and Beau Bartel of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister, Lawauna Mallon of Portland, Ore.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Estella Sanborn, in 1996.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Frank Abel cemetery in Woodland. Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel in Vancouver.
Alice Applegate
Former Bremerton resident Alice B. Applegate, 90, of Gig Harbor died of Alzheimer's disease Sept. 6, 2000, at Shoreline View Alzheimer Home.
She was born Dec. 2, 1909, in Colorado to John and Margaret (Fletcher) Oliver.
She married
R.L. Applegate on Oct. 22, 1972, in Silverdale. He preceded her in death in 1993.
Mrs. Applegate worked as a union represen-tative for the Culinary Alliance Union for 50 years, retiring in 1975.
She was a member of the Unity of Bremerton Church, the Bremerton Yacht Club and the Pythian Sisters, Temple 30.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Childress of Bremerton and Jodie Book of Kent; five grand-children; 13 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers; four sisters; and a granddaughter.
At her request, there will be no service.

Vanessa Morris
Former Belfair resident Vanessa Morris, 46, of Lyle died of ovarian cancer
Sept. 5, 2000, at Skyline Hospital in White Salmon.
She was born Dec. 19, 1953, in Seattle to Douglas and Winona (Breuninger) Hoppe. She graduated from North Mason High School in 1972 and from Fort Steilacom Community College, now Pierce College, in 1976.
She married
Gary Morris on March 29, 1980, in Bremerton.
Mrs. Morris was a dental hygienist for 23 years, retiring in 1999.
She was a member of the Olympia Ski Club and Tacoma Women's Sailing Association.
She is survived by her husband, and her parents of Belfair.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday at the Fox Island Yacht Club.

Samuel Barker
Former Gorst resident Samuel Earl Barker, 85, of Grayland died of heart failure Sept. 8, 2000, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital.
He was born March 9, 1915, in Independence to George William and Noretta (Kelley) Barker. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1934.
He married
Jane Jeanette Rigwood on March 28, 1941. She preceded him in death in 1997.
Mr. Barker was a blacksmith in the heavy forge shop at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 31 years, retiring in 1971.
He enjoyed baseball and hunting.
Survivors include three daughters, Barbara McEwen of Grayland, Colleen Smith of Tenino and Earlene Fantz of Bremerton; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
A funeral service and interment will follow.
Rose Grandia
Rosalind "Rose" Grandia, 63, of Port Orchard died Sept. 10, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born July 12, 1937, in Cauayan, Negros, Philippines, to Dominador and Felicula Salting. She graduated from St. Columban's Academy in Cauayan in 1953.
Mrs. Grandia was a homemaker. She enjoyed volleyball.
She is survived by three sons, Mario and Arturo Jr., both of the Philippines, and Jose Joaquin of Port Orchard; four daughters, Veronica Fleming and Racquel Harris, both of Port Orchard, and Gemma Carmen and Agnes Grandia, both of the Philippines; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arturo V., in 1991.
Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at Rill Chapel. Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home.

Betty Beitel
Betty Beitel, 67, of Port Orchard died Sept. 7, 2000, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Tacoma.
She was born Feb. 4, 1933, in Germany to Eugen and Therese (Meyer) Schlipf. She was educated in Germany.
Mrs. Beitel was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting and cooking. She was a member of the Catholic church.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Leonard Beitel.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
