Alice Puryear
Alice L. Puryear, 88, of Bremerton died July 28, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born March 10, 1912, in Rangoon, Burma, to Samuel and Marietta (Everett) Miner. She graduated from Alhambra High School in Alhambra, Calif., Pasadena City College in Pasadena, Calif., and L.A. Harbor College in Harbor City, Calif.
Mrs. Puryear was a dental assistant in San Pedro, Calif., and a key punch operator at Long Beach Naval Shipyard. She retired in 1978.
She enjoyed knitting and reading.
She is survived by a son, Kenneth of Bremerton; a daughter, Kay Flanagan of Lancaster, Calif.; three brothers, Arthur Miner of Clearlake Oaks, Calif., Gordon Miner of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and Robert Miner of San Diego; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lewis H. Puryear, in 1957; second husband, C. Edward Ahrens, in 1957; and three brothers, James, Howard and Everett Miner.
A private family gathering will take place in Lancaster, Calif., at a later date.
Belva Beatty
Belva E. Beatty, 76, of Bremerton died of cancer July 29, 2000, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center.
She was born March 22, 1924, in Cut Bank, Mont. She graduated from high school in Cut Bank in 1942.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and M.O.C.
Survivors include her husband, Fred Beatty; a son, Gene Lundhagen of Billings, Mont.; two brothers, Henry and Raymond Jacobsen, both of Cut Bank; a sister, Esther Jacobsen of Cut Bank; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
At her request, there will be no services.

Arnold Flemming
Arnold Flemming, 50, of Poulsbo died July 19, 2000, at his home.
He was born Aug. 9, 1949, in German Town, Pa., to Arthur and Naomi (King) Flemming. He graduated from St. Benedict's Catholic School in German Town and attended college through the Navy.
He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Flemming volunteered as a cook for Vietnam refugees and homeless shelters. He was a self-employed computer programmer.
He is survived by two sons, Ronald and Michael, both of Kingston; a daughter, Angela Flemming-Troutdale of North Carolina; and one grandchild.
Services will be held at a later date. Cremation will take place at Cherry Grove Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, "The Stone Chapel."
Vernon Powelson
Vernon W. Powelson, 48, of Port Orchard died of cancer July 27, 2000, at the University of Washington Medical Center.
He was born April 6, 1952, in Seattle to Corden and Eilene Powelson. He attended Chief Sealth High School and graduated in 1970 from Broadway High School in Seattle. He also graduated from South Seattle Community and Green River Community colleges.
He married
Julie King on Sept. 15, 1973, in Seattle.
Mr. Powelson worked six years at K2 Ski Corporation and 17 years as a quality assurance manager at GM Nameplate in Seattle.
He was a member of the Port Orchard Yacht Club, American Society for Qualit, and First Lutheran Church in Port Orchard.
Survivors include his wife; his parents; a son, Aaron of Port Orchard; and a brother, Rick of Vashon Island.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Cynthia Elbert
Cynthia Elbert, 43, of Port Orchard died of a heart attack July 24, 2000, in Port Orchard.
She was born April 26, 1957, in Longview to Tony and Ann Elbert. She attended high school in Coos Bay, Ore., and later attended Olympic College.
She married
Robert Bowen on April 25, 1987, in Boise, Idaho. Mrs. Elbert was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband; her parents, Tony Elbert and Ann Tobizka, both of Coos Bay; a brother, Tim of Coos Bay; and a sister, Cathy Sue Mensinger of Vancouver, Wash.
Private services will take place in Coos Bay. Arrangements are under the direction of Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society.
Vi Pelland
Violet Hayes Pelland, 74, of Bainbridge Island died July 26, 2000, at her home.
She was born Oct. 6, 1925, in Rozellville, Wis., to Donald and Josephine (Brinkman) Hayes. She graduated in 1943 from St. John's Cathedral High School in Milwaukee.
She married
James G. Pelland on Sept. 20, 1947, in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Mrs. Pelland worked for the federal government during World War II as a decoder and for the Washington State Ferries in concessions for 13 years.
She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church on Bainbridge Island.
Survivors include four sons, Gerald of Snohomish, Thomas, James and John, all of Bainbridge Island; four sisters, Denise Polin of Virginia, Mary Hayes of Renton, Diane Sugden of Bainbridge Island and Paula Hawkins of Poulsbo; and 12 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle, in 1954; and a son, Peter, in 1962.
A rosary will be said 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. A graveside memorial service will be held at Kane cemetery, followed by a celebration of her life at the church hall.

Raymond Koerner Sr.
Former Bremerton resident Raymond Peter Koerner Sr., 66, of Valentine, Neb., died of cancer July 24, 2000, in Colfax.
He was born Oct. 1, 1933, in Elkton, S.D., to Charles and Katherine (Clark) Koerner. He attended Brookings High School in Brookings, S.D., and Olympic College.
Mr. Koerner married
Wanda Franklin on Feb. 1, 1958, in Bremerton.
He served in the Navy from 1952 to 1971. He was an electronics technician in the Civil Service at Keyport, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Bremerton.
Survivors include four sons, Vincent of Colfax, Peter of Yakima, Robert of Spokane and Raymond Jr. of Bremerton; two daughters, JoAnn Olinger of Silverdale and Faith Freedman of Bremerton; a brother, Robert of Lincoln, Neb.; a sister, Rosella Kasperson of Brookings; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
A graveside service is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at Black Hills National cemetery in South Dakota. Arrangements are under the direction of Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax.

Virgie Hayes
Former Silverdale resident Virgie Hagerman Hayes, 96, of Yakima died of natural causes July 26, 2000, at Summitview Healthcare Center in Yakima.
She was born Aug. 13, 1903, in Burton, Kan., to William and Rebecca (Underwood) Hagerman.
She is survived by two grandchildren, Rebecca Croghan of Silverdale and James Bailey of Yakima; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George S. Hayes; and her son, Eugene Ray Bailey.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Keith and Keith Funeral Home, 902 W. Yakima Ave., Yakima, WA 98902. A graveside service is planned for 3 p.m. Monday at Terrace Heights Memorial Park in Yakima.

Tony Washek
Anton C. "Tony" Washek, 78, of Port Orchard died July 25, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 14, 1922, in Kendall, Mont., to Anton and Emma Washek. He attended school in Lewistown, Mont.
He served in the Army during World War II.
He married
Henrietta Sanders in 1943 in Jordan, Mont. She preceded him in death in 1949.
He then married
Bernice Mertz in 1951 in Lewistown. She preceded him in death in 1981.
Mr. Washek was a minister and Bible school teacher with the Church of God in Montana and North Dakota for 5 years. He later worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 18 years, retiring in 1986.
He enjoyed gardening and traveling. He was a member of the Assemblies of God Church.
Survivors include a son, Richard of Port Orchard; a daughter, Velma Farrar of Bremerton; a sister, Lydia Kennedy of Lewistown; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
A private memorial service is planned for Saturday at Christ Memorial Church in Poulsbo.

James Hansen
James LeRoy Hansen, 62, of Gorst died July 26, 2000, at his home.
He was born Dec. 2, 1937, in Shelton to Walter and Freda (Wood) Hansen. He graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1956.
Mr. Hansen served in the Army from 1957 to 1962, achieving the rank of specialist fourth class.
He married
Phyllis Hansen on Oct. 4, 1992, in Gorst.
Mr. Hansen was a park aid for the Kitsap County Parks Department and a lather for Nelson Construction, retiring from there in 1997.
He enjoyed baseball and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Walter of Van Nuys, Calif., and Michael of Santa Clara, Calif.; five daughters, Debbie Banks of Concrete, Donna Beck of Bremerton, Carrie Dalton Green Leaf of Idaho, Tammie Hansen of Santa Clara, Calif., and Christina Oakes of Gorst; a sister, Shirley Olson of Port Orchard; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A potluck remembrance is planned from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 26 at the family home in Gorst. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Bob Spratt
Robert Bruce "Bob" Spratt, 79, of Bremerton died of a heart attack July 25, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Jan. 27, 1921, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Grover and Rose (Hansen) Spratt. He graduated from East High School in 1938 and in 1945 from the University of Utah.
He married
Carol Nelson in 1942. She preceded him in death in 1956.
He then married
Gertrude VanLeeuwen on April 23, 1957, in Salt Lake City.
Mr. Spratt served in the Navy during World War II, achieving the rank of lieutenant.
He worked for Scott Wetzel Services Inc. for 47 years and was chairman of the board of Kitsap Financial Services. He retired in 1991.
He was a member of the Kitsap Country Club and enjoyed playing bridge.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert B. Jr. of Salt Lake City and Randall N. of Eugene, Ore.; two daughters, Sheron Tuttle of Moab, Utah, and Julie Ann Jennings of Salt Lake City; a sister, Marion Palmer of Salt Lake City; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Family services will be conducted in Salt Lake City at a later date. Cremation will take place at Cherry Grove Memorial Park in Poulsbo. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
