Shorty Soden
Wells "Shorty" Soden, 71, of Port Orchard died July 23, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Sept. 29, 1928, in Yakima to Earl and Cora (Houck) Soden. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma.
Mr. Soden served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a heavy equipment mechanic at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 20 years.
He was a Mason and a member of the Good Sam Trailer Club and the Port Orchard United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his companion, Alice Theroux of Port Orchard; two sons, Ed of Port Orchard and Dale of Marysville; a daughter, Colleen Lininger of Chehalis; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith (Speer) Soden in 1966; his second wife, Ruth (Boe) Soden in 1993; and his brother, Elmer.
Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rill Chapel. A graveside service is planned for noon Friday at Haven of Rest cemetery. Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Kathleen Paulson Brown
Kathleen Jane Paulson Brown, 82, of Silverdale died of a blood clot in the heart July 20, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Feb. 12, 1918, in Bozeman, Mont., to David Carl and Anna M. (McRoberts) Ward. She graduated from Bozeman High School in 1936.
She was a member of the Sons of Norway in Poulsbo and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.
Survivors include a son, Brent Paulson of Silverdale; a daughter, Pam Bray of Poulsbo; a stepson, Charles Brown of Bremerton; four stepdaughters, Darlene "Buzzi" Paulson of Renton, Diane Paulson of Eugene, Ore., Judy Gonsales of Manteca, Calif., and Vicki Wetzel of Largo, Fla.; four grandchildren and 14 stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Maynard Joseph "Barny" Paulson, in 1974; and her second husband, Charles Brown, in 1980.
A private service will be scheduled at a later date.
Marianne Braden
Marianne L. Braden, 58, of Bremerton died of cancer July 19, 2000, at her home.
She was born April 9, 1942, in Bremerton to George and Ruth (Loomis) Andrews. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle in 1960 and attended Everett Community College and Central Washington University.
She married
Ralph L. Braden in 1940 in Seattle.
She ran The Learning Circle Preschool.
Mrs. Braden was a member of Kitsap Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Stephen and Michael, both of Seattle; and a sister, Ruth Riley of Shoreline.
Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Washington Funeral Directors.
William Nowoy
William J. Nowoy, 60, of Bremerton died July 21, 2000, at Harrison Hospital of complications from a blood disorder.
He was born Aug. 28, 1939, in Chicago, to Joseph and Frances (Hays) Nowoy. He graduated from Clarkston High School in Clarkston, in 1958, Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho, in 1962, and Boise State University in 1976.
Mr. Nowoy served in the Navy from 1958 to 1960.
He married
Janice Yochum on Aug. 29, 1964, in Lewiston.
He was a banker and in the computer information systems field for 32 years, retiring this year from Electronic Data Systems in Poulsbo.
Mr. Nowoy was a member of Knights of Columbus and Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Stephen of Bremerton and Ron of Kent; three daughters, Michelle of Sacramento, Calif., Andrea of Wharton, N.J., and Ilene Milstead of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Judi Jeffreys of Clarkston; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. A rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Star of the Sea Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m.

Oliver Nelson
Oliver Lescher Nelson, 89, of Silverdale died July 20, 2000, at Crista Shores.
He was born Dec. 6, 1910, in Grand Junction, Colo., to Rex Eldon and Nettie Louise (Lescher) Nelson. He graduated from Whatcom High School in Bellingham in 1929.
He married
Lois Lucille Jones on April 9, 1933, in Omak, .
Mr. Nelson worked in the supply department at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 36 years, retiring in 1965.
He was a lay missionary builder in Africa and was a member of Chico Alliance Church in Bremerton. He enjoyed playing Ping-Pong.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Lyle of Fresno, Calif.; three daughters, Doris L. Childers and Barbara R. Fitzwater, both of Bremerton, and Betty R. Martin of Marysville; a brother, William of Bellingham; a sister, Theresa A. Voyce of Bremerton; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Eleanor L. Dormaier; and brother, Harold E. Nelson.
A memorial service is planned for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Chico Alliance Church. Inurnment will take place at Vashon cemetery on Vashon Island.

Hardis Smith
Former Olalla resident Hardis Madulia Smith, 92, of Lakewood died July 12, 2000, at St. Clare Hospital.
She was born May 6, 1908, to Rikard Julius and Louise (Eidem) Grevstad. She graduated from high school in Port Orchard.
She married
Wilson Andrew Smith on Nov. 11, 1905, in Seattle. He preceded her in death in 1992.
Mrs. Smith worked for the Department of Licensing in Olympia and later as a brush picker.
She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors include two nieces, Sandra Ashlock and Louise Grevstad; a great-nephew, Jeff Darby; and a sister-in-law, Edna Grevstad. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Marvin, Richard, and Jim.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society. Inurnment and interment will take place at Fraola cemetery in Olalla.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Francis Lee Lewis Jr.
Francis Lee Lewis Jr., 92, of Silverdale died July 15, 2000, at Belmont Terrace.
He was born March 20, 1908, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Francis Lee and Virginia (Wilson) Lewis. He graduated from Laredo High School in 1925 and attended St. Joseph's College, both in Laredo, Texas.
He married
Lanora Bera Sanders on Jan. 5, 1938, in Laredo. She preceded him in death in 1970.
Mr. Lewis worked for the Texas Mexican Railway in Corpus Christi for 52 years, retiring in 1979.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of the Catholic church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Lee Duley of Silverdale, two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held in Corpus Christi.

Charles Smith
Charles E. Smith, 67, of Silverdale died July 16, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 3, 1933, in Jacksonville, Fla.
Mr. Smith worked as a battery repairman.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbie Dial of Silverdale and Donna James of Tallahassee, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
At his request, no services will be held. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Herbert Albro
Herbert S. Albro, 74, of Silverdale died of a heart attack July 15, 2000, at his home.
He was born Jan. 8, 1926, in Glencove, N.Y., to Stephen and Ella (Stein) Albro.
He married
Alethea Bickle in Palmer, Mass. She preceded him in death in 1993.
Mr. Albro served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, achieving the rank of seaman first class. He received the African and Middle Eastern Theatre Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He worked was a machine operator for Wrights Brothers Textiles for more than 30 years, retiring in 1992.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Doris Bickle.
Interment will take place at Forest Lawn cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Nellie Wilson
Nellie M. Wilson, 77, of Bremerton died July 19, 2000, in Seattle.
She was born Dec. 29, 1922, in North Bend to George and Violet (Woodworth) McKean. She graduated from high school in North Bend.
She married
Edwin A. Wilson on Nov. 29, 1946, in Renton.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Terry McKean of Indianola; two daughters, Myrna Price and Caren Crumpacker; a brother, Larry McKean of LaConner; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

John Ghiselin
John S. Ghiselin, 74, of Bremerton died of complications of diabetes July 18, 2000, at home.
He was born Aug. 18, 1925, in San Francisco to John Shankland and Orpha "Dorothy" (Oslin) Ghiselin. He graduated from Balboa High School in San Francisco.
Mr. Ghiselin married
Evelyn "Lyn" Cromer on Oct. 19, 1968, in Great Lakes, Ill.
He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1974, achieving the rank of lieutenant commander. After retiring from the Navy in 1974, he owned a rental property management business.
He was a member of the Pacific Northwest Submarine Heritage Association and the Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed golfing.
Survivors include his wife; his father and stepmother, John and Margaret Ghiselin of Fraser, Mich.; and a brother, George Spurbick of San Diego.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Aug. 4 at Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
