Jack Phillips
Jack David Phillips, 80, of Port Townsend died June 4, 2000, at Martha & Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo of complications from a stroke.
He was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Berryville, Ark., to Glen and Gertha (Goodwin) Phillips. He graduated from high school in Grove, Okla., and from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
He married
Betty Broughton on Oct. 21, 1944, in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England.
Mr. Phillips served in the Army from 1942 to 1945, achieving the rank of sergeant. His military honors included the American Theater Service Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with four battle stars.
He was a laboratory technician with Crown Zellerbach Corporation in Port Townsend for 38 years, retiring in 1984.
Mr. Phillips was a sports fan and enjoyed picking apples and making cider.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Stephen of Poulsbo; three daughters, Susan Phillips of Port Townsend, Debbie Bagala of Poulsbo and Vicki Peters of Joyce; four sisters, Virginia Hawkins of Tulsa, Okla., Margaret Sue McCann of Pryor, Okla., Lucille Small of Huntley, Mont., and Betty Caudill of El Reno, Okla.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, James, and a sister, Shirley.
A graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. Friday at Laurel Grove cemetery in Port Townsend. Arrangements are under the direction of Kosec Funeral Home in Port Townsend.

Charles Emery
Charles Andrew Emery, 83, of Bremerton died June 6, 2000, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center.
He was born Aug. 3, 1916, in Eau Claire, Wis., to Earl and Mildred (Foss) Emery. He graduated from Union High School in Bremerton in 1934.
He married
Edith Crabtree on April 6, 1940, in Seattle.
Mr. Emery worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1934 to 1935. He entered the sheetmetal apprentice program at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1936. He retired from PSNS in 1972, as a sheetmetal shop superintendent.
He was a member of the Kitsap Fly Anglers Club and also enjoyed golf.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Daniel Herriges of The Dalles, Ore.; three daughters, Jan Krogh and Leslie Morgan, both of Bremerton, and Tracy Fantz of Port Orchard; one brother, Walt of Bremerton; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Roy, in 1966.
A memorial service is planned for 2:30 p.m. Friday at Lewis Funeral Chapel, with cremation by Cherry Grove Memorial Park.

John Ancheta
Juan T. "John" Ancheta, 93, of Port Orchard died June 6, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Jan. 25, 1907, in San Juan, La Union, Philippines, to Pantalion and Anacleta (Tabafunda) Ancheta.
He married
Dominga Garcia on Jan. 24, 1962, in Manilla, Philippines.
Mr. Ancheta was a farmer and worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He retired from PSNS in 1971 after 20 years.
He was a member of Acacia Lodge 57 in Seattle, the Pacific Northwest Ilocandia Association and St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Daisy Traylor of Seattle; one sister, Temotia Pagaduan of the Philippines; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Juliana Jacobo and Juanita Garcia, and two brothers, Dominador and Pedro.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday also at Rill Chapel. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church. Interment
will be at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Karen Smith
Former Bremerton resident Karen G. Smith, 53, of Waukesha, Wis., died June 5, 2000, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 5, 1947, in Bremerton, to Earl and Eva (Linbergh) McCoard.
She married
A.L. Smith in Tacoma in 1967. They later divorced.
She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Waukesha South Booster Club, supporting high school athletic programs. She was a member of the Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wis.
Survivors include three sons, Elton and Dave, both of Waukesha, and Rodger of Copperas Cove, Texas; two daughters, Cathy of Delafield, Wis., and Rhonda of Waukesha; one sister, Chris Anderson of Washington; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from
5 to 7 p.m. Friday, followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m., both at Cesarz, Charapata and Zinnecker Funeral Home-West, 237 North Moreland Blvd. in Waukesha.

Francisco Borja
Francisco C. Borja, 61, of Bremerton died June 5, 2000, at Harrison Hospital of respiratory failure and lung cancer.
He was born Aug. 13, 1938, in Sumay, Guam, to Manuel and Vicenta (Concepcion) Borja.
He married
Christina M. Sablan on July 1, 1960, in Guam.
Mr. Borja was a seaman in the Navy from 1956 to 1961.
He later was a welder in Guam, transferring to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1979. He retired in 1985 after 20 years as a welder.
Mr. Borja was a member of the Guam Club of Bremerton and Vicinity, the American Legion and Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife; seven sons, Joseph of San Diego, Paul of Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., Peter of Marysville, Calif., Francisco Jr. of Olympia and Ivan, Gregory and Kenneth, all of Bremerton; one daughter, Jacqueline of Bremerton; one brother, Gregorio of Santa Rita, Guam; one sister, Maria "Tita" Baleto of Santa Rita; and 27 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael, of Agana Heights, Guam, in 1995.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. Rosaries will be said at 8 p.m. nightly through Sunday at the Borja home. A funeral Mass and rosary are planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with interment at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
James Starr
James R. Starr, 66, of Bremerton died June 2, 2000, in Port Orchard of cancer.
He was born Jan. 11, 1934, in Seattle, to Bill and Mabel (Kolb) Starr. He attended Peninsula High School in Purdy.
He married
Georgia Maye Steveson in Tacoma.
Mr. Starr served in the Army from 1953 to 1955 as a private first class and radio technician. He later was a finish carpenter.
He enjoyed golf and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Charles of Bremerton; three daughters, Vickie Starr of Port Orchard, Michelle Bell of Port Hadlock and Sue Bekkelund of Waco, Texas; one brother, Ed of Republic; one sister, Betty Durant of Belfair; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Olalla Grange Hall. Arrangements are under the direction of Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society.

Cora Stafford
Cora Stafford, 82, of Belfair died June 5, 2000, in Bremerton.
She was born May 6, 1918, in Eagleton, Okla., to James and Olea (Hannah) Spikes.
She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Chapel of Port Orchard.
Survivors include one son, Arthur McCandless Jr. of Belfair; one stepsister, Marie Robison of Santa Rosa, Calif.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Arthur McCandless in 1963, and Elvin Stafford in 1982. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Faye McCandless and a brother, Jess Leonard.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel, with private interment at Twin Firs cemetery in Belfair.

Robert Zetterberg
Robert S. Zetterberg, 79, of Retsil died June 5, 2000, at the Washington Veterans Home in Retsil.
He was born May 8, 1921, in Chicago to Ivar and Jeanette (Block) Zetterberg. He grad-uated from Elma E. Lyons High School in Covington, La. in 1940, attended South Eastern Louisiana University in Hammond, La., and graduated from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif. in 1951.
He married
Juanita A. Heath on Nov. 29, 1947, in Yuma, Ariz.
Mr. Zetterberg served in the Army Air Corps from June 1945 to October 1945. He was a B-17 pilot, achieving the rank of second lieutenant. His military honors included the European Theater of Operations Ribbon and two bronze stars.
He worked as a paint chemist with Crosby Forest Products in Picayune, Miss., for over 25 years, retiring in 1986.
Mr. Zetterberg was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Kiwanis Club, both in Picayune. He was also a member of the Presbyterian church.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Bruce of Littlerock; one brother, Richard DeMars of Ontario, Calif.; two sisters, Margie Davis of Chino, Calif., and Alice Smith of California; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service is at noon today at the Retsil Community cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Michael Britt
Michael H. Britt, 43, of Gig Harbor died June 2, 2000, from a car accident near Fife.
He was born May 6, 1957, in Anchorage, Alaska. He attended Bremerton High School.
Mr. Britt was employed by Stirritt-Johnson Inc.
He and his wife, Shelly, were married
June 25, 1994.
He was a member of the plumbers and fitters union and the Eagles 2809 in Gig Harbor.
Survivors include his wife; his father, Howard and his wife; five children, Shannon, Blake, Brandon, Robert and Hannah; one brother, Charles; and one sister, Elfie Michelle. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elfriede, and a brother, Frank.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Haven of Rest Chapel in Gig Harbor, with interment at Haven of Rest cemetery.
Lori Mumford
Lori Esther Mumford, 38, of Bremerton died June 5, 2000, in Bremerton of cancer.
She was born May 18, 1962, in Oregon City, Ore., to Robert L. and Sandra A. (Halstead) Pautz. She graduated from Auburn High School in 1980.
She was a member of Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her parents of Auburn; two sons, Andrew Chase Mumford and Michael Tyler Mumford, both of Bremerton; two daughters, Breanne Sarah Pautz and Brittany Amanda Mumford, both of Bremerton; and one sister, Debby M. Beason of Des Moines.
Irene Aseltine
Irene Betty Aseltine, 64, of Bremerton died May 28, 2000, at Bremerton Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Oct. 16, 1935, in Port Angeles to Carl and Lilly (Wilcox) Christenson. She attended Sequim High School.
She married
James Aseltine on July 26, 1962, in Tacoma.
Survivors include her husband; four sons, Nick Nichols, Jerry Nichols of Port Angeles, and Tom Nichols and Arnie Aseltine, both of Bremerton; two daughters, Anita and Linda Aseltine, both of Bremerton; four sisters, Ovetta Steillicom and Margaret Guthrie, both of Port Angeles, and Rosie Peterson and Lorraine Romo, both of Shelton; three brothers, Kenny Christenson and Myles, both of Port Angeles and Alfred Christenson; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
No service is planned. Burial took place at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
