Helen Rice
Helen Evelyn Rice, 98, of Port Orchard died Feb. 4, 2000, in Port Orchard of natural causes.
She was born July 20, 1901, in Selby, S.D., to Arne and Mathilde (Elden) Strand. She grew up in the Walworth County, S.D., area, graduating from Selby High School in 1919.
She married William LaVester "Vester" Rice on Nov. 10, 1921, in Selby. He preceded her in death in 1986.
Mrs. Rice was a homemaker. She was a member of Mystic Rebekah Lodge 168.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy McGee of Port Orchard; two grandchildren, Ronald McGee of Ellensburg and Denise Earle of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Port Orchard United Methodist Church. Interment icon will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard. Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to Port Orchard United Methodist Memorial Fund, 725 Kitsap St., Port Orchard, WA 98366.

May McCarthy
May B. McCarthy, 86, of Bremerton died Feb. 3, 2000, in Bremerton of natural causes. She had lived in Bremerton since 1952.
She was born May 1, 1913, in Tacoma to Robert and Vena (Sherar) Smollett. She grew up in Everett.
She married Claude P. McCarthy on Nov. 10, 1945, in Seattle.
Mrs. McCarthy was employed as secretary/treasurer for the Department of Washington Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, retiring in 1975 after 15 years.
She and her husband owned and operated two grocery stores in Bremerton, Olympic View Grocery and Park Avenue Grocery.
She was a member of the VFW 239 Ladies Auxiliary in Bremerton and the Cooties Pup Tent Nine Auxiliary. She had served the VFW 239 Ladies Auxiliary as a past president, past District Four president and a past Department of Washington president. She also was a member of Hard Luck Hannah's Drill Team, the American Legion 149 Ladies Auxiliary (recently transferring to the Auxiliary to American Legion Post 68) and the American Legion Eight and Forty organization.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Ray Irons of Port Angeles; one daughter, Janice Swyers of Bremerton; one stepdaughter, Sandra Williamson of Ivins, Utah; one sister, Willadee Solem of Everett; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel on the Hill with a funeral service following at 1 p.m. Interment icon will take place at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VFW Auxiliary Cancer Fund, attention Margie Hammill, 5222 Hardt, Bremerton, WA 98311.

Linda Gray
Linda L. Gray, 54, of Bremerton died Feb. 5, 2000, at Harrison Hospital of natural causes.
She was born July 16, 1945, in Anoka, Minn., to Elmer and Evelyn (Conners) Cooper. She grew up in Bremerton, graduating from West High School in 1963.
She married Joseph Gray on June 15, 1963, in Bremerton.
Mrs. Gray was active in Boy Scouts of America. She began as a den leader with Pack 512 when she was 18, continuing as an instructor and commissioner until her death.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Steven of Bremerton; one daughter, Carmen Parker of Bremerton; one brother, Grant Cooper of San Jose, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Scott, Zach and Nicole Parker and Amanda and Christina Gray, all of Bremerton.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel on the Hill. Inurnment will take place at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Scout Tribute Fund, Chief Seattle Council/BSA, P.O. Box 440408, Seattle, WA 98114-9758.

William Van Horn
William Curtis Van Horn, 80, of Bremerton died Feb. 5, 2000, at Naval Hospital Bremerton.
He was born Aug. 1, 1919, in Baltimore, Md., to William and Hanna (Carlson) Van Horn. He was raised and educated in Baltimore.
He and his wife, Eunice, were married on Aug. 18, 1946, in Seattle.
Mr. Van Horn served in the Navy from 1938 to 1957, retiring in Bremerton as a chief boatswain's mate.
He was an active member of Steadfast Lodge 216 Free and Accepted Masons of Bremerton. He had been a past master of the lodge and had served as secretary for many years.
He also was a past deputy to the grand master in District 12 of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Washington. He had served on the temple board and in many other lodge activities.
Survivors include his wife; and one sister, Edith Ruttan of Spring Town, Texas.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Wednesday at the East Bremerton Masonic Temple on 11th and Perry. Cremation will take place at Cherry Grove Memorial Park in Poulsbo, with his ashes scattered at sea by the Navy. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association - Washington Affiliate, 557 Roy St., Lower Level, Seattle, WA 98109-4219.

Carl Hirsch
Carl Hirsch, 84, of Bremerton died Feb. 3, 2000, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center.
He was born Oct. 6, 1915, in Fort Morgan, Colo.
He married Marianne Gail Stuart on Dec. 12, 1945, in Spokane.
Mr. Hirsch served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945. He later worked as supervisor of Shop 64 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He was retired.
Survivors include his wife; two brothers; and three sisters.
At his request, there will be no services. His ashes will be placed in a garden niche wall at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent. Arrangements are by Tuell-McKee Funeral and Cremation Services of Bremerton.
Memorial donations may be made to American Legion Post 69 and Elks Lodge 1181.

Frank Peacock
Frank Gilbert Peacock, 64, of Bremerton and Kittitas died Feb. 4, 2000, at the home of his daughter, Cindy, in Bremerton.
He was born Jan. 9, 1936, in Gig Harbor to Gilbert and Violet (Shaw) Peacock. He grew up in Bremerton, graduating from Bremerton High School in 1954.
Mr. Peacock worked 42 years with Associated Grocers in Bremerton, Everett, Yakima, Ellensburg and Bellingham. He retired in 1998.
He also was an ordained minister for 40 years, pastoring with The Church of God of Prophecy in Everett, Bellingham, Ellensburg and Spokane.
Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Sylva, Cindy Davison and Deborah Peacock, all of Bremerton; one brother, Steve of Gig Harbor; six grandchildren, Chasity Sylva of California, Matt and Charissa Sylva, both of Bremerton, Amy Isaia of California, Adam Davison of Italy and Heidi Jensen of Burlington; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at The Church of God of Prophecy, 909 Dartmouth in Tacoma.

Hazel McKennon
Hazel Nell McKennon, 65, of Seabeck died Feb. 5, 2000, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
She was born April 12, 1934, in Long Lake, Wis.
She married William Robert McKennon on July 31, 1956, at the National Audubon Camp in Sarona, Wis.
Mrs. McKennon was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; five sons, Bob of Bremerton, Ricky, Timothy and David, all of Seabeck, and Kenneth of Evansville, Wis.; two daughters, Kathleen Wolterman of Bremerton and Beth of Port Orchard; one brother, Victor Laveau of Anaheim, Calif.; one sister, Eunice Brown of Stoughton, Wis.; and five grandchildren.
A service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Assembly of God Church in Bremerton. Arrangements are by Tuell-McKee Funeral and Cremation Services of Bremerton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hillcrest Assembly of God, 6750 State Highway 303 NE, Bremerton, WA 98311.

Kaley Davis
Kaley Ann Davis, 6 months, of Bremerton died Feb. 3, 2000, in Bremerton.
She was born Aug. 10, 1999, in Bremerton to Mark and Jamie (Gay) Davis.
Survivors include her parents; a brother, Joseph; a sister, Alexis; and grandparents Nancy Vinding of Bremerton, James Gay of Bremerton, Diane of Bremerton and Charles of New Jersey.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Woodlawn Chapel.

Cassi Gemmell
Cassi Gemmell, 19, of Suquamish died Feb. 2, 2000, from injuries sustained in an automobile collision.
She was born March 23, 1980, in Winnemucca, Nev., to Bill Gemmell and Vicky Rhoades. She graduated from high school in Winnemucca in 1999 and moved to Suquamish that summer.
She was employed by the Suquamish Tribe and was a member of the Suquamish Traditional Dance Society. She also was a published poet.
Miss Gemmell is survived by her parents; grandparents Evelynne and Leonard, Delores Baker, and Bill Rogers; a sister, Kelly Formby; eight aunts, Jenny Gemmell, Sue Parkhurst, Sheri Asay, Robin Camcho, Lisa Ellis, Lori Wolfe, Sandy Smith, and Kathy Scarratt; and two uncles, Bob Gemmell and Richard Shmiedt.
Suquamish community members held a "Healing Circle" to grieve her death and support her family on Feb. 3.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Suquamish Tribal Center. Burial will be in Winnemucca on Tuesday.

Eva Elwell
Eva M. Elwell, 76, of Tacoma died Feb. 3, 2000, in Tacoma.
She was a German teacher at Hoquiam High School, and moved to Port Orchard after her retirement. She and her husband later moved to Tacoma.
Mrs. Elwell was a member of the PEO.
She is survived by her husband, Charles; five children, Brigitte, Sandra Garrett, Thomas, Stephen, and Michael; a sister, Brigitte Schwarzmayr; two brothers, Siegfried Rieger and Gunenther Rieger; and six grandchildren, Amber, Sarah, Joshua, Alex, Bryan and Charles.
A funeral service will be held at noon Tuesday at 1002 South Yakima Avenue in Tacoma. Burial will be at Tahoma National cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by Gaffney Cassedy Allen & Buckley King Funeral Home.

Robert Arendshorst
Robert J. Arendshorst, 85, of Belfair died Feb. 4, 2000, at Oyster Bay Care Center.
He was born April 10, 1916, in Grand Rapids, Mich., to Jon and Martha (Schoon) Arendshorst. He grew up in Holland, Mich., and graduated from Holland High School.
He earned his bachelor's degree at Michigan State University and his master's degree at Northwestern University. He earned his doctoral degree at The Julliard School in New York City, and was the first recipient of the Interlochen Music Festival Scholarship.
He married Audre J. Warren on Dec. 29, 1944, in Greenfield Village, Mich.
He owned and operated the Four Seasons Tobacco & Gift Shop in Holland for 18 years, retiring in 1987. He was an international opera singer, performing in cathedrals, tabernacles and synagogues in Rome and New York.
He was a member of the Alpha Omega Epsilon fraternity.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Tom Earl of Auburn; a daughter, Adri Anna Arena of Bremerton; and two grandchildren, Amare and Dakotah of Bremerton.
Services have not yet been determined.
