Edith Akey
Former Bremerton resident Edith Belle Akey, 100, of Wheatland, Calif., died Jan. 24, 2000, in Marysville, Calif., of natural causes.
She was born July 8, 1899, in Stuartsville, Mo., to Benjamin Franklin and Evaline (Cottrell) White. She grew up in Amity, Mo.
She married
James Akey on Dec. 8, 1917, in Amity. He preceded her in death in 1967.
She had been a member and deaconess at First Christian Church in Bremerton since 1942. In the Bremerton area, she also volunteered with the Chuckwagon Senior Nutrition Program for 15 years and was a member of the Grandmothers Club and the Pinochle Club.
Survivors include one son, J. Clyde of Wheatland; one daughter, Sharon Prichard of Port Orchard; three grandchildren, Jerald and James Akey and Lynn Mele; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a son, H. Jack; a daughter, Barbara Sims; a brother, Roy White; and a sister, Lela White.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Feb. 19 at First Christian Church in Bremerton. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will take place at Forest Lawn cemetery in Bremerton.

Gus Johnson
Gustof E. "Gus" Johnson, 90, of Port Orchard died Jan. 30, 2000, at Port Orchard Care Center.
He was born Jan. 7, 1910, in Spooner, Wis., to John and Matilda Johnson.
He married
Cody Whitman on Sept. 21, 1937. The couple moved to this area in 1952.
Mr. Johnson was a carpenter for 40 years, retiring in 1969. He was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 1597 in Bremerton and Christ Lutheran Church in Belfair.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Jon of Bremerton; three grandchildren, Dawn Piety and Kim and Darren Johnson; and six great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Shirley Bartholomew
Shirley R. Bartholomew, 67, of Kingston died Jan. 31, 2000, at Harborview Medical Center.
She was born July 23, 1932, in Bellingham, to Gwendolyn and Gerald Axlund.
Survivors include her husband, Francis, of Kingston; three sons, Rick Robertson of Poulsbo, and Tim and Grant Wright of Kingston; two daughters, Linda Noia and Tracy McLaughlin of Kingston; one brother, Gerry Axlund of California; and 15 grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday at Kingston Cove Yacht Club.
Neil Challender
Former Bremerton resident Neil Clinton Challender, 60, of Kirkland died Jan. 25, 2000, at his home.
He was born March 25, 1939, in Gig Harbor. He attended Bremerton High School and served in the Navy from 1956 to 1961.
For the past 15 years, Mr. Challender owned a company which serviced computer printers.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Sally; one son, Ryan; one daughter, Nicole; his father, Dave Challender; his stepfather and stepmother, Lee and Betty Peterson; one sister, DeLane Skellington; and one brother, Barry. His mother, Vesta "Dee" Peterson, preceded him in death.

Hazel Carter
Former Bremerton and Silverdale resident Hazel E. Carter, 90, died Dec. 26, 1999, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
She was born April 8, 1909, in Coalfield, Tenn., to Jerry and Rosa (Robbins) Smith.
She retired from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. She was a member of Blue Star Mothers and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include three sons, Ralph of Silverdale, Clarence of Buckley and Robert of Shelton; two daughters, Rosa of Shelton and Carrie of Belfair; two sisters, Geraldeen and Glendeen of Michigan; one brother, Thomas "Bud" Gilbert of Ohio; two foster sons, Ronald Collman and Eugene Graling of Puerto Vallarta; 23 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; a son, Dorous "Dorey"; three grandsons, David Engh and Carl and Jeffery; and two granddaughters, Jewel and Janet.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Clarence Martin
Former Port Orchard resident Clarence L. Martin, 85, of Stevens, Penn., died Jan. 31, 2000, at the Stevens home of his daughter, Melissa Martin, of natural causes.
He was born in Lititz, Penn., to Philip and Emma (Landis) Martin.
Mr. Martin was a major in the British Royal Air Force, Eagle Squadron 121, during World War II. He later transferred to the United States Army Air Corps, stationed in Germany, receiving five bronze stars.
He last was a truck driver for 20 years by Lebanon Chemical Company in Lebanon, Penn. Previously, he owned and operated a trucking company. He retired in 1976, moving to Port Orchard.
He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Congregational Church in Reamstown, Penn. and served as chaplain of the Eagle Squadron Association.
Survivors include two sons, C. Michael of Boothwyn, Penn., and Jere of Victorville, Calif.; two daughters, Kathi of Hopeland, Penn., and Melissa of Stevens; one sister, Annie Lausch of Lititz; four grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Albert. His wife, Kathryn (Fedesky) Martin, preceded him in death in 1997.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Good Funeral Home & Cremation Centre Inc. in Reamstown.
Dottie Hanusovski
Longtime Kitsap County resident Dorothy "Dottie" Hanusovski, 70, of Port Orchard died Jan. 29, 2000, at Harrison Hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born June 23, 1929, in Seattle to Knute and Marta Risberg. She graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1947.
She worked for the government many years, primarily at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. She retired in 1985.
Survivors include one daughter, Lynn Malley; one son, Randy Risberg; two sisters, Sonja "Sunni" Facciolla of New Jersey and Anne Miller of Port Orchard; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death in 1986.
At her request, there will be no services. Cremation was under the direction of Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Robert Wells
Robert Deloss Wells, 81, of Bremerton, died Jan. 29, 2000, in Bremerton.
He was born Jan. 5, 1919, in St. Joseph, Mo., to Edward and Lola (Dwyer) Wells. He grew up in Cameron, Mo., attending school there until he moved to Seattle at 16. He graduated from Seattle's Queen Anne High School in 1937.
He and his wife, Jane, were married
in November 1940 in Seattle.
Mr. Wells served in the Army from 1942 to 1943 as an air mechanic. He also served in the Merchant Marine.
He worked for the United States Postal Service for 29 years, retiring in 1976. Previously, he worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard immediately after World War II.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, David and Robert Jr. of Bremerton; one daughter, Barbara Abbott of Bremerton; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.
A private family scattering of ashes will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Alma Berg
Alma Olivia Berg, 85, of Silverdale died Jan. 31, 2000, at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
She was born Jan. 6, 1915, in Pearson (Central Kitsap), to Jacob and Anne (Dahl) Ringness. She was raised and educated in Central Kitsap, graduating from Port Washington Bay Union High School (now Central Kitsap High School) in 1932.
She married
Kenneth Berg on May 12, 1934, at Island Lake Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death in 1996 after 62 years of marriage.
Mrs. Berg was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth of Seattle; one daughter, Marianne of Bellevue; three sisters, Agnes Berg of Bremerton, Ruth Olsen of Poulsbo and Mildred Frazier of Silverdale; and one grandson, Michael.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and on Friday from 9 a.m. until noon at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday also at Lewis Funeral Chapel, with a graveside service following at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Zona Smith
Zona Fern Smith, 85, of Bremerton died Jan. 30, 2000, in Bremerton.
She was born June 26, 1914, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Melvin and Mable (Headley) Morris. She grew up in Council Bluffs, attending Thomas Jefferson High School there.
She married
Jessie Smith on Nov. 1, 1970, in Retsil. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Melvin McDowell of Joplin, Mo., and Joe Smith of Silver Springs, Nev.; two daughters, Marlene Malone of Plattsmouth, Neb., and Judith Mueller of Council Bluffs; two sisters, Faye Jones and Gloria Miles of Port Orchard; 14 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. today at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A funeral Mass will be said at noon Thursday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, with interment following at 2 p.m. at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Billie Jean Harrison
Billie Jean Harrison, 61, of Port Orchard died Jan. 31, 2000, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
She was born July 27, 1938, in Dallas to William and Willie (Morgan) Harrison. She grew up in Dallas, attending Ottawa College in Kansas City, Mo.
She was a telecommunications analyst with Sprint for 15 years, retiring in 1998. She was a lead volunteer advisor for Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors, a member of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and newsletter coordinator for Business and Professional Singles.
Survivors include one son, Alan of Vashon Island; two daughters, Deborah Perry of Belton, Mo., and Amy Nelson of Port Orchard; two brothers, Charles of Mesquite, Texas, and Ronald of Austin, Texas; and nine grandchildren, Joey Perry of Tucson, Ariz., Meghan Perry of Belton, Christopher and Emily Slay of Port Orchard and Justin Jones, Michael Travina, Toby Jones, Kristal Jones and Jessica Shride, all of Vashon Island.
A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Morrie Laber
Morris P. "Morrie" Laber, 75, of South Colby died Jan. 23, 2000, at his home.
He was born Feb. 1, 1924, in Sykeston, N.D., to Joseph and Carolyn (Palloch) Laber. He grew up in Sykeston.
Mr. Laber served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946. He landed on Normandy Beach on D-Day in 1944.
He worked as a rigger at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 31 years, retiring as a general foreman in 1979. He also was a charter boat skipper out of Westport for 30 years.
He and his wife, Betty, were married
on Jan. 20, 1948, in Sykeston.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Keith of Boring, Ore.; two daughters, Rikki DeBlois of Seabeck and Melody Wall of Bremerton; one brother, Orville of Salinas, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Derrick and Devin Christensen and Austyn and Taylor Wall, all of Bremerton, and Brett Laber of Boring.
A memorial service was held Saturday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Valborg Cox
Former Bainbridge Island resident Valborg Paulson Cox, 92, of Seattle died Jan. 28, 2000, in Seattle.
She was born Sept. 12, 1907, in Heroy, Norway, to Alford and Tora Paulson. She grew up in Port Blakely.
Survivors include one son, Charles of Seattle; and one grandson, William. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, in 1987.
No service is planned. Inurnment will take place at Hillcrest cemetery on Bainbridge Island. Arrangements are by Kass Funeral Home.
