Doris Bercot
Doris H. Bercot, 85, of Bremerton died of kidney failure Nov. 12, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Nov. 5, 1916, in Halsey, Ore., to Charles H. and Jessie (Smith) Hillman. She was raised in Shelton and attended high school there.
She had worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in New Mexico and for The Boeing Co., retiring in 1981.
Survivors include a son, Darrell "Bud" of Port Orchard; two daughters, Shirley DeCoteau of Tracyton and Carol Endsley of Gig Harbor; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers; a sister; and a granddaughter.
At her request, there will be no services.
Joni McConnell
Joan "Joni" Marie McConnell, 51, of Seabeck died of cancer Oct. 22, 2001, at home.
She was born Feb. 2, 1950, in Tacoma to Patrick and Lois (Rinker) McConnell. She graduated in 1968 from Woodrow Wilson High School in Tacoma. She also attended the University of Washington and Washington State University.
She was involved in restaurant management, teaching and spiritual counseling.
She enjoyed world travel and swimming with dolphins.
Survivors include her father; a brother, Mike "Mac" of Seabeck; and a sister, Linda McConnell Templeton of Seattle.
A memorial service was held Oct. 28. Arrangements were made by Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society.

Sharon Parsons
Former Port Orchard resident Sharon Elaine Parsons, 70, of Casa Grande, Ariz., died Nov. 9, 2001, in Casa Grande.
She was born June 1, 1931, in Timber Lake, S.D., to Wilbur and Margaret (Ward) Thompson. She graduated in 1949 from Hill City High School in South Dakota and attended Olympic College.
She served in the Womens Army Corps as a corporal from 1951 to 1954.
She was a licensed practical nurse.
She enjoyed knitting and reading.
Survivors include her husband, Orvel A. of Casa Grande; a son, Dale A. of Centennial, Colo.; two daughters, Donna Young of Wenatchee and Darla Treworgy of Yarmouth, Maine; two brothers, Willis Thompson of Amarillo, Texas, and Charles "Chuck" Thompson of Amarillo; two sisters, Marilyn Searles of Port Orchard and Ardith Jeffries, of Custer, S.D.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Frank.
A memorial service was held in Casa Grande on Nov. 10. Inurnment took place at Evergreen Memorial Park in East Wenatchee. Arragements were made by Wyman Cremation and Burial Chapel of Mesa, Ariz.

Laura Floyd-Smith
Laura Lynn Floyd-Smith, 43, of Port Orchard died due to complications from surgery Nov. 12, 2001, at Providence Hospital in Seattle.
She was born July 5, 1958, in Joliet, Ill., to Laurence and Liah (Whittington) Smith. She graduated in 1976 from North Mason High School in Belfair. She was studying to be a medical assistant at Olympic College.
She married
Mike Smith on Jan. 8, 1983, in Washington.
She was a homemaker and a student.
She enjoyed roses, hummingbirds and church activities at Christ the Rock Community Church.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Marc Smith of Port Orchard; a brother, Darwin Floyd of Belfair; two sisters, Anna Marie Dirk of Bremerton and Julia Lee Whittington-Pullen of North Richland Hills, Texas.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Christ the Rock Community Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Freda Coad-Leibrant
Freda Mae Coad-Leibrant, 87, of Lacey died Nov. 13, 2001, in Olympia.
She was born May 20, 1914, in Knoxville, Tenn.
She is survived by her husband, Don Leibrant; a son, Richard Simms of Poulsbo; a stepson, Richard Leibrant of Pacific; two daughters, Janice Ninear of Camano Island and Judy Bingay of Monroe; two stepdaughters, Thelma Pulsifer of Seattle and Debra Ticknor of Kennewick; a brother, Bill Bennecker of Port Susan; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert, and a granddaughter, Sara.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at Purdy and Walters at Floral Hills, 409 Filbert Road in Lynnwood. A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at Purdy and Walters.

David Pelkey
David G. Pelkey, 63, of Hoquiam died of cancer Nov. 10, 2001, at Grays Harbor Health and Rehabilitation.
He was born Dec. 18, 1937, in Bremerton to John and Ivy Pelkey. He graduated in 1956 from South Kitsap High School and attended Olympic College.
He married
Mary Anne Smith on Dec. 12, 1992, in Aberdeen.
He served in the Army from 1957 to 1960 and in the Army Reserve until 1997.
He was a part-time instructor for Industrial Training International in Woodland, Cowlitz County. Previously, he was a rigging and crane instructor and was a rigger at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
He enjoyed hiking, fishing, gardening and playing with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his mother of Port Orchard; three sons, Glenn of Portland, Ore., Kreg of Vancouver, Wash., and David of Revenna, Ohio; a stepson, Colby Dees of Nampa, Idaho; a daughter, Keri Beth Mellera of Portland; three brothers, Robert of Homer, Alaska, and Dennis and Dean Frank of Port Orchard; a sister, Terry Havey of Port Orchard; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Evergreen Mortuary and Cremation, 5611 Olympic Highway, Aberdeen. Another service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Industrial Training International, 9428 Old Pacific Highway in Woodland.

Celina Anderson
Celina Lorraine Anderson, 4, of Bremerton died of cancer Nov. 12, 2001, at her home.
She was born Feb. 12, 1997, in Bremerton to John and Rachelle (Klein) Anderson.
Celina enjoyed ballet, drawing, swimming and going to parks.
She attended Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church with her family.
She is survived by her parents; five brothers, Dominic, William, Isaac, Lucas and Josiah; five sisters, Christina, Monica, Bridget, Angela and Michaela; her paternal grandparents, Roger Anderson of Seattle and Lia Filson of Richland; and maternal grandparents, Pete and Marilynn Klein of Seattle.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Interment
will be at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Elizabeth Holmes
Elizabeth V. Holmes, 90, of Silverdale died Nov. 8, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Dec. 21, 1910, in Seattle to Jesse and Anna (Wetherell) Vaughan. She graduated in 1927 from West Seattle High School, in 1931 from the University of Washington and in 1955 from Stanford University.
She married
Harlan B. Holmes on June 15, 1968, in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1975.
She worked in civil service for the Navy and the Department of Interior for 34 years, retiring in 1966.
She was a past Nobel Grand of Mystic Rebekah Lodge and musician for Rebekah Assembly. She was a member of Manette Community Church.
Survivors include a stepson, William Holmes of Ashland, Ore.; a stepdaughter, Marybelle Sceva of Stanwood; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; six nieces and nephews; 18 great-nieces and nephews; 16 great-great-nieces and nephews; and one great-great-great-nephew. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Vaughan; and a sister, J. Louise Frey.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. Entombment at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Edmund Aman
Edmund A. Aman, 77, of Bremerton died Nov. 12, 2001, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center.
He was born Jan. 16, 1924, in Hosmer, S.D., to Jacob and Louisa (Barth) Aman. He was educated in Hosmer.
He served in the Philippines while in the Army from 1944 to 1945. He was awarded two bronze service stars.
He married
Catherine "Sue" Locke on March 6, 1976, in Kent. She resides at the Willows in Bremerton.
He worked at The Boeing Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1986.
He enjoyed spending time with family, gardening, fishing and the outdoors.
He was a Lutheran.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Elroy of Missoula, Mont., Glynn of Federal Way and Dennis of Entiat; two stepdaughters, Cherie Gardner of Tahuya and Colleen Schmidt of Morongo, Calif.; three brothers, Julius of Aberdeen, S.D., Erwin of Hosmer and Jake of Soos Falls, S.D.; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Milton; and two sons, Lyle and Myron.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Parkwood Lane Senior Park, 2611 S. 288th St., in Federal Way. Private interment will be at Washington Memorial in SeaTac.

Harmon Whaley
Harmon Whaley, 67, of Bremerton died of lung cancer Nov. 6, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born July 13, 1934, in Eudora, Ark., to Eugene and Emma Sue (Waites) Whaley. He earned his GED while serving in the Army and graduated in 1977 from Olympic College.
He married
Rose Marie Lumel in the early 1950s while stationed in Germany with the Army. They were divorced in 1984.
Mr. Whaley served in the Army from 1951 to 1974, achieving the rank of sergeant first class. He was awarded the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
He completed an apprenticeship in welding at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, where he worked from 1974 until retiring in 1993.
He enjoyed reading and flying model airplanes.
Survivors include his former wife of Chicago; a son, Ronnie of Chicago; two daughters, Elaine Whaley May and Rachel Whaley Tyler, both of Chicago; two brothers, the Rev. James Boykins of Rochester, N.Y., and Harold Butler of Oxnard, Calif.; a sister, Gloria Whaley Williams of Chicago; three nephews; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father in 1983 and his mother in 1972.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. A graveside service with full military honors will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Ellen Fortner
Ellen Joyce Fortner, 78, of Suquamish died Nov. 11, 2001, in Suquamish.
She was born June 19, 1923, in Bellingham to Willis and Edna (Hardin) Johnson. She was a graduate of Ballard High School.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and gardening.
She is survived by her husband, Don Fortner of Suquamish; three daughters, Joyce Tomlinson of Snoqualmie, Linda Wollam of Mukilteo and Margaret Franklin of the Tri-Cities; a brother, Ben Johnson; three sisters, Doris Gjersvold of Kelso, Beverly Scott of Burien and Lorraine Glenn of Long Beach; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel. Cremation is by Cherry Grove Crematory.
