Bernice Hart
Longtime Port Orchard resident Bernice E. Hart, 78, died Oct. 18, 1998.
She was born April 3, 1920, in Ruso, N.D.
Hart was a member of the Port Orchard Farmer's Market.
Survivors include her husband of 48 years, John W. Hart; three sons, James of Port Orchard, John of Gympie, Australia, and Shannon of Belfair; two daughters, Bonnie Morrison of Kingston and Randee Hennessy of Gilroy, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Park.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 23 at Haven of Rest Chapel, Gig Harbor.

Daniel Hinger
Daniel Hinger, 88, of Poulsbo died Oct. 18, 1998, in Bremerton, of cardiac arrest.
He was born June 3, 1910, in Pettibone, N.D., to August and Fredricka (Flemmer) Hinger. He was raised in Jamestown, N.D.
On Dec. 19, 1942, he married
Mary H. Berg in Jamestown, N.D. She preceded him in death in 1968.
Hinger served in the Army from 1942 to 1945, in North Africa and Sicily. He achieved the rank of technical sergeant fifth class. He later worked in federal civil service for 27 years until his retirement in 1970.
Survivors include a son, Danny of Poulsbo; two sisters, Freida Reiswig of Walla Walla and Rose Schaubert of Fessenden, N.D.; two grandchildren, Dana Hinger of Portland, Ore., and Erica Hinger of Poulsbo.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Oct. 23 at Mt. View Funeral Home, with graveside services immediately following at Mt. View Memorial Park.
Lillian Nelson
Lillian M. Nelson, 75, of Bremerton died Oct. 15, 1998, at Martha and Mary Nursing Home.
She was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Frenchtown, Mont., to Henry and Antoinette (Kack) Hartman. She was raised in Frenchtown, Mont., graduating from Frenchtown High School. She later graduated from Eastern Montana College of Education in 1943.
On July 18, 1951, she married
Kenneth A. Nelson in Great Falls, Mont. He preceded her in death in 1984.
Nelson was an elementary schoolteacher in Belt, Stocket and San Cooley, Mont. She moved to Washington State and became a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Theresa's Guild of Holy Trinity Parish and the Ladies of Elks.
Survivors include a daughter, Antoinette Bricco of Lakeside, Calif.; and a son, Charlie Hartman of Great Falls, Mont.
Visitation will be from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 21 with Mass immediately following, both at Holy Trinity Church. Inurnment will be at Arlington National cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Church or the American Heart Association.
Dorothy Baker
Dorothy Bell (Fisk) Baker, 90, of Port Orchard died Oct. 17, 1998, at Ridgemont Terrace.
She was born April 30, 1908, in Sedro Woolley. She was raised and educated in Anacortes.
She was a 50-year member of Port Orchard Chapter No. 44 O.E.S. and a life member of the Daughters of the Nile, Hatasu Temple No. 1.
She was preceded in death by a husband, Roy Fisk in 1977, and by her second husband, Earl Baker in 1992.
Inurnment will be at Sunset Lane cemetery.

Paul Downs
Paul Charles Downs, 52, of Bremerton died Oct. 15, 1998, at his home.
He was born Nov. 6, 1947, in Boise, Idaho, to Joseph and Carol (Sloan) Downs. He graduated from high school in Mountain Home, Idaho, in 1964. He attended college briefly before joining the Navy.
Downs served in the Navy for 20 years. He was aboard a submarine during the Vietnam War and on the USS California during the Iran hostage crisis. He achieved the rank of E-7 Navy Chief. He later founded Downs Enterprises, a computer consulting company, until his death. He was a Rotarian in Poulsbo.
Survivors include his wife, Lottie Ostrander of Silverdale; his mother of Lodi, Calif.; his father and stepmother of Camano Island; a son, Ian of Pasadena, Calif.; three stepsons, Mike Howlett of Spokane, Michael Bancroft and Peter Bancroft of New York; three stepdaughters, Gerri Ford of Bremerton, Mary Deerheim of Silverdale and Teresa Franklin of Spokane; a brother, Timothy of South Hamilton, Mass.; two sisters, Susan Kuhn of Lodi, Calif., and Margaret Hamley of Juneau, Alaska; and 12 grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 22 at Faith Fellowship Church, 6251 NW Newberry Hill Road, Silverdale.
Inurnment will be at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Edward Bales
Edward "Gene" Bales, 78, of Bremerton died Oct. 13, 1998, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center.
He was born Nov. 10, 1919, in Fairbury, Neb., to Ernes and Neva (Nicholls) Bales. He was raised and educated in Nebraska.
On March 23, 1940, he married
Joy Seachord in Washington, Kan.
Mr. Bales served in the Navy during World War II. He came to Kitsap County in 1951 and was a woodworker at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard until his retirement in 1980. He then became a self-employed carpenter.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert of Bremerton; a daughter, Joyce Lundquist of McMinnville, Ore.; two brothers, Lewis of Fairbury, Neb., and Maynard of Glenvil, Neb.; a sister, Dorothy Eberhardt of Tacoma; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 16 at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Nellie Irish
Nellie Irish, 86, of Bremerton died Oct. 13, 1998.
She was born Feb. 12, 1912, in Lloydminister, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Mrs. Irish was a member of the Bremerton Community Church of God.
Survivors include three daughters, Kathleen Wystrach of Gig Harbor, Jean Laing of New Orleans, La., and Joan Ewart of Seattle; a sister, Myrtle Smith of Bremerton; and 11 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Irish, in 1987.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct 17 with a funeral service immediately following, both at Bremerton Community Church of God.

William Moore
William John Moore, 82, of Burley died Oct. 12, 1998, of cancer.
He was born Nov. 13, 1915, in Burley to Ambrose and Agness (Cain) Moore. He was raised in Burley.
Mr. Moore worked as a logger and a farmer until making his living as a self-employed meat cutter.
Mr. Moore established a Johnny Moore Scholarship Fund for children's education in Burley. He was a foster father, past captain of the Burley Fire Department, past member of the Kitsap Sheriff's Posse, past member of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America and past member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.
Survivors include a son, Ronald Peabody of Puyallup; and a sister, Margie Summers of Gig Harbor.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 19 with a funeral service immediately following, both at Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home. There will be a reception following the service at Burley Community Hall.
Jessie Ayles
Jessie Ethel Ayles, 74, of Bremerton died Oct. 14, 1998, at Twilight View Adult Family Home, of a stroke.
She was born May 18, 1924, in Richfield, Idaho, to Tom and Helen (Shelley) Coates. She was raised in Richfield, Idaho.
In July 1978, she married
Justin T. Ayles. He preceded her in death in May of 1997.
Mrs. Ayles was a member of Hillcrest Assembly of God and the Piecemakers, a missionary support group.
Survivors include two sons, Robert and David, both of Carlton, Ore.; three daughters, Carolyn Sears of Bremerton, Mary Trammell of McMinnville, Ore., and Sharon Moss of Belfair; and 10 grandchildren, Kyle Moss of Belfair, Richard Moss of Cypress, Calif., Jon Moss of Seal Beach, Calif., Brian West of Sheridan, Ore., Paul Sears of Hillsboro, Ore., Patrick Sears of Bellevue, Jason Trammell of McMinnville, Ore., and Curt, Tanya and Tara West, of Carlton, Ore.
A private service will be conducted.

Dickie Sample
Dickie Virginia Ruby Sample, 73, of Bremerton died Oct. 7, 1998, at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland, of brain cancer.
She was born July 5, 1925, in Seattle to Richard and Ruby (Anderson) Lindahl. She was raised in Bremerton, graduating from Bremerton High School in 1943. She later attended Pacific Lutheran University.
In 1946, she married
Joseph Sample in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1985.
Mrs. Sample worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard during World War II.
Survivors include two sons, Terry of Brier and Rick of Ellensburg; a sister, Hope Colignon of Bremerton; and three grandchildren, Ryan, Anna and Thomas Sample.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 18 at Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home.
