Robert Spreng
Robert Joseph Spreng, 79, of Bremerton died Sept. 12, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 24, 1922, in Philadelphia to Robert and Annie (Bradley) Spreng. He graduated in 1940 from high school in Philadelphia.
He married
Nelly Carreno.
Mr. Spreng served in the Navy from 1941 to 1962, achieving the rank of engineman first class. He was honored with the World War II Victory Medal and recognition for submarine combat.
He later worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 17 years, retiring in 1988 as a reactor plant general foreman.
Mr. Spreng enjoyed fishing and traveling.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jean of Bremerton and Lisa Lanctot of Seattle; and one brother, David of New Jersey.
A celebration of his life will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at 2851 Hayton St., in Bremerton. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel with cremation at Cherry Grove Crematory.
Louise Crow
Louise C. Crow, 93, of Bremerton died Sept. 11, 2001, at Bremerton Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born March 30, 1908, in Everett to Ernst and Amelia (Bowman) Schuldt.
She married
Carl T. Crow on May 13, 1928. He preceded her in death in 1979.
Mrs. Crow was a cashier at Seattle First National Bank for 44 years.
She was a member of the Reliance Chapter of Eastern Star and Harrison Hospital Auxiliary, and attended Charleston Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn M. Cole of Bremerton; two sisters, Helen Johnson and Alice Schuldt, both of Bremerton; and three grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a son, Gerald C. Cole.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Doris Martin
Doris M. Martin, 80, died Aug. 30, 2001, at Ridgemont Terrace.
She was born March 23, 1921, in Tacoma to William and Elsie (Shaupp) Scully.
She graduated in 1939 from South Kitsap High School and attended Washington State College.
She married
B. James Ayotte in May 1942 in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1963.
She married
Gillis F. Martin in Silverton, Ore., in April 1964. He preceded her in death in 1984.
Mrs. Martin was an administrative assistant in the industrial dispensary at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 30 years, retiring in 1985.
She was a member of the Lady of Elks in the 1950s and 1960s and was involved in religious education at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in the 1950s.
She was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard.
Survivors include a son, Ron Ayotte of Port Orchard; three granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 13 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Claudia George
Former Bremerton resident Claudia Gail George, 70, died Sept. 2, 2001, in Las Vegas.
She was born July 28, 1931, in San Diego, Calif., to Claudius and Frances (Schooler) Galway.
She married
Leonard E. George July 17, 1949, in Jemison, Ala., in 1949. He preceded her in death in 1998.
Mrs. George was the first Kitsap County person, in a nursing home and wheelchair-bound, to become a Volunteer Grandparent for the Headstart Preschool Program. For her efforts, she was featured as an Unsung Hero in The Sun. She also enjoyed playing cribbage and bingo.
Survivors include a son, Tom of Grand Junction, Colo.; two daughters, Wanda Sears of Lyndon, Vt., and Ellen McGovern of Port Orchard; two sisters, Ellen Mullinax and Helen Klemp, both of Las Vegas; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She also was preceded in death by a sister and brother.
Arrangements will be made by surviving family members.
Muriel Gilham
Muriel V. Gilham, 87, of Keyport died Sept. 10, 2001, at Martha & Mary Health Care Center.
She was born April 19, 1914, in Olympia to Charley and Aurlene (Henry) Moulton. She graduated in 1931 from Olympia High School.
She married
Don L. Gilham on Jan. 14, 1941, in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1995.
She worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Port Angeles, the Department of Defense, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Naval Submarine Base at Bangor.
She was a Spanish tutor for North Kitsap High School and enjoyed traveling.
She attended St. Charles Episcopal Church in Poulsbo.
She is survived by a brother, Jack Moulton of McKinleyville, Calif.; two sisters, Cora Lyga of Olympia and Eleanor Fisch of Eureka Calif. She also was preceded in death by a brother, James Moulton.
Inurnment will be at Forest cemetery in Olympia. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Lois Kvarnstrom
Port Orchard resident Lois Alene Sackman Kvarnstrom, 86, died Sept. 11, 2001, at Manor Care in Gig Harbor.
She was born Jan. 3, 1915, in Tracyton to Joseph Wright and Lulu B. (McPhee) Sackman.
Mrs. Kvarnstrom was a great-granddaughter of Chief Sealth, and a member of the Duwamish Tribe.
She married
Roy Kvarnstrom on June 21, 1933, in Port Orchard. He preceded her in death in 1983.
Mrs. Kvarnstrom was a homemaker. She was proud of her heritage, and completed her first cedar bark storage basket at the age of 86 under the tutelage of her daughter.
She was a Protestant.
Survivors include two sons, Carl of Shelton and Jack of Snoqualmie; a daughter, Mary Lou Slaughter of Port Orchard; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Interment will be at Tracyton cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
William Vanderbilt Jr.
William Howard Vanderbilt Jr., 93, of Seattle died Aug. 28, 2001, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
He was born June 23, 1908, in Gig Harbor to William and Jessie Vanderbilt.
He worked for Blue Star Shipping Line for 12 years and later was a librarian for the Kitsap County Library.
He enjoyed traveling and collecting books and oriental art.
A memorial service was held Sept. 1 in Manchester.
Tomi Smokoff
Mildred Louise "Tomi" Smokoff, 84, of Bremerton died July 24, 2001, in Bremerton.
She was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, to David and Lela (Hewitt) McKenzie. She graduated in 1933 from Culbertson High School in Culbertson, Mont., and later attended beauty school.
She married
Peter "Smoky" Smokoff in Montana in 1936. He preceded her in death in 1987.
Mrs. Smokoff was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Her survivors include one son, Bill of Bremerton; one daughter, Loretta of Bremerton; one sister, Ruth Croake of Seattle; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Rubbert; and a granddaughter, Vicki Castleman.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at The Salvation Army, 832 Sixth St., in Bremerton.
Katharyn Gilman
Katharyn M. Gilman, 84, of Bremerton died Sept. 5, 2001, in Seattle.
She was born Dec. 29, 1916, in Livingston, Mont., to Gustav and Alba (Renstrom) Anderson. She graduated from Park High School in Livingston and attended college in Spokane.
She married
Charles Gilman on Nov. 21, 1953, in Bremerton.
Mrs. Gilman enjoyed sewing and golf.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Paul of Palo Alto, Calif., and Charles of Poulsbo; one daughter, Susan Bedard of Absarokee, Mont.; one brother, Kenneth Anderson of Medford, Ore.; one sister, Doris Heckler of San Diego; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
At the family's request, no service will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel with cremation at Cherry Grove Crematory.
Edna Butts
Edna Marie Butts, 91, of Poulsbo died of natural causes Sept. 7, 2001, at Martha & Mary Health Care Center.
She was born July 14, 1910, in Juneau, Alaska, to August and Lydia (Sund) Smith. She graduated in 1927 from Juneau High School and attended Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore.
She married
John Butts on Nov. 5, 1935, in Juneau. He preceded her in death in 1997.
Mrs. Butts was a member of Vinland Lutheran Church in Poulsbo.
Survivors include two sons, Fred of Ravensdale and Jim of Richfield, Wis.; one brother, Roy Smith of Anacortes; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Vinland Lutheran Church.

Bonnie Nelson
Bonnie Jean Nelson, 51, of Bremerton died of natural causes Aug. 30, 2001, at her home.
She was born Dec. 18, 1949, in Klamath Falls, Ore., to George and Isabell (Evans) Hill. She attended North Kitsap High School.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed embroidery and planning family gatherings.
Survivors include one son, Richard Jr. of Bremerton; one daughter, Judy Hill of Bremerton; one brother, James Hill of Elma; three sisters, Cindy Hill and Rose Kowalski, both of Bremerton, and Sherry Giese of Hudson, Wis.
A memorial gathering and potluck will be at noon Sunday at the home of
her sister, Cindy, 1726 Bloomington Ave., in Bremerton. Arrangements are under the direction of Kitsap Cremation & Burial Society.
