Seth Smith
Seth Ira Smith, 87, of Bremerton died Oct. 9, 1998, at Bremerton Convalescent Center.
He was born June 21, 1911, in Wheeler, Mich., to Wesley and Maude (Bailey) Smith.
In 1972 he married
Lydia Larionoff in Port Orchard.
Smith served in the Air Force from 1942 to 1945. He was with the RAAF in Roswell, N.M., as a sergeant for the 509 composite group. He served at Tinian in the Northern Mariana Islands, receiving the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Theater Service Ribbon, the American Theater Service Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He later worked for Charleston Hardware and as a caretaker at Driftwood Keys until his retirement.
He was a member of the VFW in Port Orchard and the Teamsters Local No. 589.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Gerald Smith of Odessa; four stepsons, Roger and Nicholas Cook, both of Bremerton, Norman Cook of Des Moines and John Cook of Seattle; two daughters, Julie Stehr of Newman Lake and Joy McKeen of Nine Mile South; two stepdaughters, Marcia Teal of Maple Valley and Barbara Thornton of Union; four grandchildren; 18 stepgrandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside blessing will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 15 at Miller Woodlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kitsap Foodline or the Alzheimer's Association.
Dan Ross
Dan Lee Ross, 82, of Port Orchard died Oct. 11, 1998.
He was born May 16, 1916, to Tom and Clara Ross. He was raised in Houston, Texas.
On Aug. 15, 1952, he married
Lubertha Robertson.
Ross was a member of the Hamma Hamma Lodge No. 35, F & AM and P.H.A. of Washington State.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Donald of Spokane and Terry of Port Orchard; three daughters, Gloria Tayler of Renton, Bea Smith and Tami Ross, both of Port Orchard; three brothers, Jewel, Willie and David, all of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Ruth Jackson of Oakland, Calif., and Pearl Jones of Houston, Texas; 19 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Dan Lee Ross Jr.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 15 at Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home, with Judean Rose Croix Ceremony at 7:30 p.m..
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 16 with graveside services immediately following, both at Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home
Dorothy Ballantyne
Dorothy Agnes Ballantyne, 84, of Port Orchard died Oct. 6, 1998, at Bremerton Convalescent Center, from heart failure.
She was born June 8, 1914, in Lethbridge, Alberta to Ernest and Florence (Morgan) Kealey. She was raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, graduating from Fairview High School in 1931.
On May 23, 1939, she married
Thomas Ballantyne in Vancouver, British Columbia. He preceded her in death in 1985.
Ballantyne worked for several companies including the I.W.A. Union in Prince George, B.C. Most recently she was a secretary for the Laundry Workers Union for eight years until her retirement in 1974. In 1991, she moved to Port Orchard to be near her family.
Survivors include two daughters, Arlene McCann of Port Orchard and Vicky Gragg of Bremerton; a sister, Minnie Crutchley of White Rock, B.C.; three grandchildren, Michael Strangi of Bremerton, Tyler Cook of Tacoma and Vanessa Cook of Port Orchard; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be conducted at a later date.
Alta Ward
Former Bremerton resident, Alta V. Ward, 77, of Tacoma died Oct. 9, 1998.
She was born April 30, 1921, in Dryad, Wash., to Ollie and Beecher Ward. She was raised in Washington, graduating from North Kitsap High School.
She owned and operated Alta's Beauty Salon in Silverdale.
Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl De Groot of Tacoma and Sandy Carter of Seabeck; two brothers, Ralph and Virgil; five sisters, Hazel, Ruby, Lily, Myrtle and Kathleen; and three grandchildren, Mike and Josh Patterson and Adam Carter.

John Page
John (Jack) Page, 73, of Kingston died of cancer Oct. 5, l998, at his home.
He was born May 18, 1925, in Des Moines, lowa, to James and Mary Alice (White) Page. He spent most of his childhood in Manchester and Shelton.
He joined the Navy in May 1943 and served as a medic with the 5th Marine Division during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was discharged in November 1945.
On September 14, 1947, he married
Carol Jean in Shelton.
He attended Seattle Pacific College and graduated in 1951 with degrees in chemistry, physics and education.
Mr. Page taught chemistry, physics and mathematics at Central Kitsap High School for six years. He worked at various naval installations in Kitsap County until he retired from Bangor (SWFPAC) in January 1984.
He was a member of Christ Memorial Church in Poulsbo.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, James of Port Orchard, John of Hood River, Ore., and David of Spokane; three daughters, Diane Wilson of Bellevue, Carol Sue Carver of Birmingham, Ala., and Karen of Seattle; a sister, Lois Meyer of Portland, Ore.; and 16 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 10 at Christ Memorial Church, Eighth Avenue and Hostmark Street, Poulsbo. Internment and a graveside service will be at Mount Tahoma National cemetery, Maple Valley.

Donald Hengl
Donald Edward Hengl, 58, of Bremerton died Oct. 4, 1998, at Naval Hospital in Bremerton.
He was born May 5, 1940, in Kankakee, Ill.
He married
Carol M. Brown in Seattle in 1961.
Mr. Hengl served 20 years in the Navy, retiring as a chief radioman.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Risa Olson of Port Angeles and Renea Manning of Oroville, Calif.; one brother; three sisters; and three granddaughters, Jessica, DeeDee and Morgan.
A memorial service in conjunction with the Sunday evening worship service will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Navy Yard City Bible Church.

Doris Carver
Doris Oleta Carver, 81, of Bremerton died Oct. 1, 1998, at Forest Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Dec. 28, 1916.
Mrs. Carver was a homemaker but she worked as a shipfitter's assistant at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard during World War II.
She was a foster grandparent at the Frances Haddon Morgan Center for 13 years.
A memorial gathering will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Cascade Gas Community Room, 6313 Kitsap Way, Bremerton

Verlyn Wallace
Verlyn W. Wallace, 77, of Port Orchard died Oct. 6, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
He was born Nov. 6, 1920, in Comanche, Okla. He was raised in Long Beach, Calif., graduating from Compton High School in 1937. He later attended UCLA.
On July 18, 1956, he married
Florence T. Johnson in Concrete.
Mr. Wallace served in the Coast Guard from 1942 to 1946. He served as a coxswain in the Pacific during World War II. He later worked as a safety engineer supervisor at Satsop Nuclear Power Plant until his retirement in 1983.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Jerry of Seattle; a daughter, Tina Jeatran of Port Orchard; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Wallace, and a daughter, Beth Robinson.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 10 at The Conifer Ridge Apartments Social Room.

Dan Jones
Danzley Jones, 73, a former Bremerton resident, died Sept. 16 in Williston, N.D.
He was born December 15, 1924, in St. Lawrence, S.D., to John and Mable (King) Jones. The family later moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where he grew up and graduated from high school in 1942.
He attended Washington State College in Pullman before enlisting in the Army. He joined the 101st Airborne and trained at Fort Benning, Ga. He was part of the D-Day invasion on Normandy and later was taken prisoner by German soldiers in Holland. He was held for 10 months in Work Commando 3111. His military service lasted from 1943 until 1945.
After the war, he came to Bremerton to live with his family. He later owned and operated Chuck and Dan's Service Station with Chuck Haselwood at Sixth Street and Park Avenue in Bremerton.
On January 31, 1947, he married
Irene Anderson in Bremerton, and in 1953 they moved to Ray, N.D. The following year they moved to Tioga, N.D., where he began Dan Jones Plastering Co. In 1962 Delmar Brokaw joined the company and it became Brokaw and Jones Plastering. He retired in 1989 and his son, Vernon, became owner of the company.
He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Tioga and had served on that church council. He served on the Tioga Park Board, was a member of Tioga American Legion Post No. 139, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a life member of the National Prisoners of War. He was ND State Commander of POW for two years and commander of the North Dakota chapter for two years.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Dr. Robert Jones of Napa, Calif., Vernon Jones of Minot, N.D.; two sisters, Mable Carstens and Shirley Boerner of Bremerton; and five grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, six brothers and an infant son, Danzley Eric.
Services were conducted in North Dakota.
