Joseph Van Valey
Joseph William Van Valey, 75, of Port Orchard, died Aug. 22, 2001, at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 9, 1925, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, to Joseph and Opal (Hendershot) Van Valey.
Mr. Van Valey served in the Marine Corps during World War II.
He married
Gloria Rechinni on Jan. 9, 1948, in Seattle. She preceded him in death in 1993.
He married
Isabel Monk on July 29, 1994, in Reno, Nev.
Mr. Van Valey worked for Pacific Northwest Bell for 36 years, retiring in 1981.
He was a Master Gardener and enjoyed wintering in Arizona.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Christine Barber of Bremerton; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service was held Monday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Neva Werner
Neva Jo Werner, 88, of Bremerton died Aug. 23, 2001, at home.
She was born Aug. 24, 1913, in Carter County, Mo., to Theodore and Laura (Massey Mills.
She married
Edward C. Werner on March 13, 1938, in Paducah, Ky.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed playing bridge and being a Cub Scout den mother.
She attended Silverdale United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, David of Silverdale, Jim of Denver and Gary of Albuquerque; a daughter, Jan Verner of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister, Marguerite Dougherty of Tuscola, Ill.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and six sisters.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Crista Shores retirement home. The service will be officiated by Pastor Wally Snook of Silverdale United Methodist Church.

Ruth Marlow
Ruth Elizabeth Marlow, 94, of Silverdale died Aug. 23, 2001, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center.
She was born July 17, 1907, in Carrollton, Mo., to Wiley and Mary Bell (Elliot) Cooper-Cox.
She married
George Thomas Marlow on July 16, 1927, in Kansas City, Mo. He preceded her in death in 1995.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed quilting. She was a member of Oakland Ladies Aid and Oakland United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter, Lynda M. Rinacke of Bremerton; a sister, Audrey Owens of Holden, Mo.; six grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a son, Billy E.; and two brothers, Vernon Cooper and Wiley Cooper Jr.
A graveside service and interment will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Oakland United Methodist Church cemetery in Missouri. Local arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Ruby Smith
Ruby N. Smith, 76, of Olalla died of cancer Aug. 24, 2001, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center.
She was born Aug. 20, 1925, in Howard's Ridge, Mo., to James and Esther (Henry) Beaver.
She married
Albert H. Smith on July 17, 1953, in Port Orchard. He preceded her in death in 1993.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by five sons, Jack of Olalla, Albert Jr. of Poulsbo, Randall of Sterling, Va., Paul of Bremerton and Kenneth of Granite Falls; a daughter, Mary Burch of Bremerton; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Forest Lawn cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Norman Sandberg
Norman Carl Sandberg, 65, of Indianola died of brain cancer Aug. 22, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Feb. 4, 1936, in Pasco to Carl and Elsie (Von Notric) Sandberg. He graduated in 1954 from Colfax High School in Colfax and attended Washington State University. He graduated in 1963 from Whitworth College in Spokane.
He served in the Marines as a radarman from 1955 to 1959.
He married
Judy (Norton) Carlson on Aug. 14, 1984, in Issaquah.
He was a marketing and service director for Pacific Northwest Bell and AT&T for 26 years, retiring in 1990.
He enjoyed golf and was the executive director for "Stand Up for Kids." He was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jonathan of Denver and Ken Crelling of Tacoma; four daughters, Kelly of Ballard, Kerry Taylor, of Lakeland, Fla., Terry George of Meridian, Idaho, and Shellee Skinner of Poulsbo; three brothers, Gordon of Walla Walla, Dave of Yakima and Dan of Klamath Falls, Ore.; and 16 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, 18920 Fourth Ave. NE, in Poulsbo. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary The Stone Chapel.

Robert Bruhahn
Robert R. Bruhahn, 67, of Seattle died of natural causes Aug. 21, 2001, in Seattle.
He was born Dec. 12, 1933, in Port Orchard to Robert Leo and Effie Maybelle (Bradley) Bruhahn.
He was raised and educated in Port Orchard and graduated from South Kitsap High School.
He attended Portland Community College and Portland State College.
On Nov. 10, 1988, he married
his wife, Maree, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Mr. Bruhahn was in the Navy from 1952 to 1966 and was discharged with the rank of yeoman second class.
He later was a jeweler.
He was devoted to his pets and enjoyed vacationing at his summer home in Tonasket.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Bradley of California and Brian A.R. Bruhahn of Kent; three sisters Charlotte Trantow of Tucson, Norma Jean Harvey of Port Orchard and Alice Rochelle Stone of North Bend; and seven grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. today followed by an 11 a.m. funeral at Kosec Funeral Home in Port Townsend. Interment
will follow at Greenwood cemetery in Chimacum.

Edward Noldan
Edward Henry Noldan Sr., 73, of Grapeview died of cancer Aug. 17, 2001, at Mason General Hospital in Shelton.
He was born Oct. 16, 1927, in Syracuse, N.Y., to Henry and Julie (Bishop) Noldan.
He married
Madeline Elizabeth Philipson.
Mr. Noldan served in the Navy from 1944 to 1967, retiring as a master chief petty officer. He was awarded the National Defense Medal with Bronze and Silver Stars.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and volunteered with the Navy Memorial Fund.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John of Shelton and Edward Jr. of Westminster, Calif.; one daughter, Patti Rose of Shelton; one brother, Henry of Wilmington, N.C.; one sister, Marianne Ospelt of New York; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services are private. Arrangements are under the direction of McComb Funeral Home in Shelton.

Curtis Zard
Curtis Zard, 77, of Port Orchard died of natural causes Aug. 22, 2001, in Bremerton.
He was born July 23, 1924, in Alexandria, S.D., to Russell and Marjorie (Gifford) Zard. He graduated in 1941 from Onalaska High School in Onalaska.
He married
Dove Grose on Aug. 13, 1942, in Oregon City, Ore. They were later divorced.
Mr. Zard served in the Marine Corps as a sergeant during World War II.
He later was a Hyster lift driver in the lumber industry for 18 years and a card dealer in Reno for 35 years.
Mr. Zard enjoyed fishing and playing cards.
Survivors include his former wife; two sons, Darrell of Rochester and Curtis Jr. of Chehalis; two daughters, Nola Clay of Ferndale and Geraldine Flint of Mount Vernon; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gifford.
A private gathering of family and friends will be held later. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Elmer Horn
Elmer Henry Horn, 77, of Bremerton died Aug. 20, 2001, at Forest Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Oct. 2, 1923, in Deer Creek, Minn., to Christian and Mary (Otten) Horn.
Mr. Horn served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War.
He married
Suzann Thierer on Sept. 26, 1978.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Christian of Bremerton, Dyrk of Chandler, Ariz., and DuWayne of San Clemente, Calif.; three daughters, Melia "Bunny" LeGare of Seabeck, Lori Camacho of Belfair and Julie Cameron of Bremerton; one brother, Leonard of Deer Creek; one sister, Louise Lueders of Deer Creek; 20 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edgar, and a sister, Marion, both of Deer Creek.

Raymond Sage
Raymond Sage, 73, of Belfair died July 31, 2001, at his home.
He was born Jan. 6, 1928, in Billings, Mont., to Alvin and Belva Sage.
He married
Beverly Finnegan on Dec. 18, 1948, in Chehalis.
Mr. Sage served in the Army from 1946 to 1947, then continued his government service in Shop 02 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He worked about 29 years with the government, retiring in 1974.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary of Belfair and Donald of Montana; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
