Harry Chinn
Harry L. Chinn, 74, of Port Orchard died Aug. 17, 2001, at his home.
He was born Oct. 28, 1926, in Seattle to Lung and Louie (Shee) Chinn.
Mr. Chinn served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
He worked as an equipment specialist at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 32 years, retiring in 1981.
He is survived by one brother, Charles of Bremerton; and one sister, Mary Ann Louie of Las Vegas.
A funeral service is planned for 2 p.m. Friday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. Inurnment will be at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Michael Cowles
Former Bremerton resident Michael Joseph Cowles, 56, of Hillsboro, Ore., died Aug. 6, 2001, of renal failure at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland, Ore.
He was born Jan. 6, 1945, in Oakland, Calif., to Claude and Louise (Dixon) Cowles. He graduated from Oakland High School and, in 1984, from Northwest Nazarene College in Caldwell, Idaho.
Mr. Cowles served in the Army from 1965 to 1974, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. He was awarded numerous medals including three Good Conduct Medals and a Bronze Star.
He was a contract negotiator with the Department of Defense and the Navy for 14 years. He retired in 1999 because of his health.
He married
Terry Simmons on May 30, 1968, in Frankfurt, Germany. She preceded him in death in 1996.
Mr. Cowles enjoyed outdoor activities, including fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his mother of Hillsboro, Ore.; one son, Bill of Hillsboro; one daughter, Trish Motter of Hillsboro; one brother, Pat of Boise, Idaho; one sister, Carol Harbaugh of Pittsburg, Calif.; and one grandchild.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Hillsboro. Arrangements are under the direction of Bronleewe-Bass Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
Hans Aarshaug
Hans Aarshaug, 98, of Port Orchard died Aug. 19, 2001, of natural causes in Bremerton.
He was born May 26, 1903, in Norway to Ole and Martha (Malvik) Aarshaug.
He married
Lillian Frank on Aug. 28, 1926, in Bremerton. She preceded him in death in 1964.
Mr. Aarshaug worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 38 years, retiring in 1955 as a planner/estimator.
He enjoyed gardening and fishing.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Blanscet of Port Orchard and Betty Beal of Vaughn; two sisters, Helen Payne of Bremerton and Ruth Oakes of Harper; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Taylor, and a brother, Sig.
A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. Inurnment will be at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.

Fred Cook
Fred S. Cook, 82, of the Washington Veterans Home in Retsil. formerly of Tacoma, died Aug. 18, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 14, 1919, in Tacoma to Frederick and Clara (Carlson) Cook. He graduated from Puyallup High School in 1938.
Mr. Cook served in the Navy during World War II.
He married
Florence Campbell in September 1943 in Maryland.
Mr. Cook was a pipefitter in the Tacoma boat yards. He retired in 1984.
He managed and coached in the South Kitsap Babe Ruth Baseball League for a number of years. He was a member of a community church in Retsil.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Fred of Port Orchard and Kevin of Pahrump, Nev.; three daughters, Joyce Snow, Diane Cilenti and Valerie Cook, all of Tacoma; one sister, Ruth Cater of Tacoma; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers, Ken, Vernon and Lucian; and by a sister, Joy Carlson.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Washington Veterans Home with inurnment in the cemetery there.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Oswald Rodstol
Oswald H. Rodstol, 94, of Port Orchard, died Aug. 19, 2001, at Ridgemont Terrace.
He was born Sept. 14, 1906, in Alesund, Norway, to Ole and Pernille (Sather) Rodstol. He attended Vashon Island High School.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He later was a pressman at a plywood mill in Seattle for 34 years, retiring in 1967.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include four brothers, Laurence of Seattle, Leonard of Southworth, Harry of Wenatchee and Henry of Olympia. He was preceded in death by a sister Margaret Westlund; and a brother, Olaf Rodstol.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. Interment
will be at Sedgwick cemetery in Port Orchard.

Christopher Sargent
Christopher Andrew Sargent, 11, of Belfair died of leukemia Aug. 14, 2001, at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital.
He was born Oct. 9, 1989, at Harrison Hospital to Ronald and Cathy (Jennings) Sargent. He attended Belfair Elementary School.
He enjoyed video games, sports and riding quads.
He is survived by his parents and his grandfather, Virgil Jennings of Allyn.
A memorial service will be from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday at the Allyn Gazebo.

Jacqueline Frizelli
Jacqueline H. Frizelli, 70, of Suquamish died Aug. 18, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Christmas Day 1930, in San Pedro, Calif., to Leonard and Helen (Ongley) Powers. She graduated in 1949 from San Pedro High School.
She enjoyed bingo and people. She was a Lutheran.
Survivors include two sons, James Lesh of Poulsbo and Phillip Frezell of Hansville; three daughters, Susan Velarde of Kingston, Diane Lesh of Suquamish and Lonnie Kazar of Michigan; a brother, Jack Powers of Torrence, Calif.; a sister, Josephine Pridmore of California; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her companion, Lowell Quesnell.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shorewood Community Center, corner of Hood Canal Drive and Ponderosa, in Hansville. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary The Stone Chapel.
Susie LaFreniere
Frances "Susie" LaFreniere, 84, of Bremerton died Aug. 17, 2001, at Forest Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born April 23, 1917, in Colville to Clarence and Carrie (Campbell) Swan. She graduated in 1935 from Bremerton High School.
She married
Edward LaFreniere in 1949 in Olympia. He preceded her in death in 1994.
She was a bookkeeper in Bremerton for many years.
She was an Life Master with the American Contract Bridge League and enjoyed bowling.
Survivors include three sons, Loren Hawkins of Bremerton, John Hawkins of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Gary LaFreniere of Des Moines; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Cremation by Cherry Grove Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Glen Henrickson
Glen Michael Henrickson, director and embalmer at Bremerton's Lewis Funeral Chapel, died of cancer Aug. 16, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove in Poulsbo.
Esther Clark
Esther Lena Clark, 83, of Port Orchard died of emphysema Aug. 14, 2001, at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle.
She was born July 5, 1918, in Leslie, Mich., to Joseph Peter and Hazel May (Hill) Messner. She graduated from high school in Jackson, Mich.
She married
Thomas Jefferson Clark on Aug. 31, 1946. He preceded her in death in 1962.
Mrs. Clark was a laborer at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 17 years, retiring in 1986.
She had participated in Bluebirds and Camp Fire youth programs and was involved in missionary work. She was a member of the Assemblies of God.
Survivors include one son, James of Marysville; two daughters, Shirley Ann Rose of Visalia, Calif., and Glenda Raye Tronson of Port Orchard; one brother, Clifford Eugene Messner of Jackson, Mich.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Phillip and Walter Messner.
A service will be held later. Arrangements are under the direction of Lipp and Sullivan Mortuary in Marysville, Calif.

Terry Whitford
Former Poulsbo resident Terry Thomas Whitford, 68, of Palm Bay, Fla., died of lung cancer Aug. 2, 2001, at Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice in Palm Bay.
He was born Dec. 16, 1932, in Seattle to Homer and Agnes (Ryen) Whitford. He graduated in 1951 from North Kitsap High School and in 1956 from a college in Chicago.
He married
Barbara Cross on Sept. 21, 1986, in Mims, Fla.
Mr. Whitford served in the Army from 1953 to 1954.
He later worked with Rockwell International for 30 years, retiring in 1988.
Mr. Whitford enjoyed contract bridge and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jeff of Tallahassee, Fla., and Wade of Islamorada, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Melinda and Julie Cross, both of Palm Bay; one brother, John of Bremerton; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Homer.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 25 at Palm Bay Funeral Home in Palm Bay, Fla.
