Carmen Hughes
Carmen E. Hughes, 90, of Bremerton died July 11, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Oct. 12, 1910, in St. Joe, Idaho, to Ira and Myrtle (Donley) Fleming. She was a 1929 graduate of St. Maries High School in St. Maries, Idaho.
She married
Ernest Hughes on May 3, 1932, in Colfax. He preceded her in death in 1975.
Mrs. Hughes worked in dry cleaning for many years. She also operated Ione's Apparel in Poulsbo for several years with her sister.
She was a member of Olympic Chapter 216 of the Order of the Eastern Star and Ladies of Elks.
Survivors include a son, Terry of Bremerton; a daughter, Trudy Hartstrom of Centralia; three stepsons, Ernest and Irvin, both of Bremerton, and Earl of Peck, Idaho; four grandchildren; numerous stepgrandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Melba Swope, a brother, Darrell Fleming, and a stepdaughter, Helen Hughes.
Visitation will be at 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Monday also at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Graveside services will follow at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Lawrence Bogert Jr.
Lawrence C. Bogert Jr., 70, of Tacoma died of a heart attack in Tacoma July 12, 2001 at his home in Tacoma.
He was born Nov. 28, 1930 to Lawrence C. and Lilah (Carroll) Bogert in Inkster, N.D.
Mr. Bogert joined the U.S. Navy in 1947, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer before he left the service in 1949.
He married
Sonja Jorde in Grand Forks, N.D., on Oct. 4, 1950, and settled in Bremerton in 1951. She preceded him in death in 1978.
He again married
in 1989 to Margaret Lawless of Tacoma.
While in Kitsap County, Mr. Bogert worked for 33 years with the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office as a deputy investigating labor and industry disputes. He retired in 1991.
He was a Seattle Mariners fan and car enthusiast.
Mr. Bogert also was a Catholic.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; a son, James Bogert of Bremerton; a stepson, Darcy Speidel of Gig Harbor; a daughter, Joan Clouse of Mead; four brothers, Leo of Sunnyslope, Dallas of Federal Way; Marvin of Huntington, Ind. and Gordon of Des Moines; and six grandchildren.
A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Gaffney Funeral Home in Tacoma.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tacoma.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to a charity of choice.
Margaret Lilienthal
Margaret Lilienthal, 87, of Bremerton died June 11, 2001, at the Marine Courte Alzheimer's Home in Bremerton.
She was born Dec. 15, 1913, in St. Louis, Mo., to William and Josephine (Burkhard) Thornton. She was educated in St. Louis.
She married
Alex Lilienthal in Chicago. He preceded her in death in 1999.
Mrs. Lilienthal was a homemaker. She enjoyed singing and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include a son, Robert Lee Shawver of Streamwood, Ill.; a daughter, Doris Schirmer of Allyn; a stepdaughter, Geraldine Weber of Wisconsin; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Belfair Community Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Mary Golden
Mary M. Golden, 83, of Bremerton died following a stroke
July 9, 2001, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
She was born April 10, 1918, in Winnisboro, La., to Daniel and Ella (Ealy) Smith.
She married
Sam Golden in Newellton, La., in 1935. He preceded her in death in 1981.
Mrs. Golden was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Bremerton and enjoyed working with young people.
Survivors include a son, Johnny LaDelle of Port Orchard; a daughter, Nell of Kent; two sisters, Elizabeth Simmons and Margaret Wilson, both of Portland, Ore.; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, 14th and Ohio in Bremerton. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, also at First Baptist Church with interment at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Harold Bender
Harold Ruebin Bender, 77, of Port Orchard died from complications of leukemia July 6, 2001, at his home.
He was born Aug. 8, 1923, in Tacoma to Fred and Elisabeth Bender. He graduated in 1941 from high school in Tacoma.
Mr. Bender served in the Army from 1943 to 1946.
He married
Shirley Henningsgard on Dec. 5, 1970, in Gorst.
He was a firefighter for 36 years, retiring as a captain in 1978 from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center at Keyport.
Mr. Bender was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 5, American Legion Post 149 in Bremerton and the English Lutheran church.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Larry of Poulsbo, Dan of Suquamish and Ken of Keyport; two stepsons, David and Denny Heard; two stepdaughters, Pam and Donna Heard; a sister, Elsie Keck of Rocky Ford, Colo.; 28 grandchildren; and 47 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Elaine Bender; a stepdaughter, Robin Salsbarry; a stepson, Robert Yeiter; and a sister, Martha Banick.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Illahee State Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Louis Wells
Louis Arthur Wells, 69, of Retsil died of natural causes July 7, 2001, in Retsil.
He was born April 11, 1932, in Saginaw, Mich.
Mr. Wells served in the Army from 1950 to 1952. He was awarded the Korean War Medal.
He was a carpenter.
Mr. Wells enjoyed baseball, particularly the Mariners, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 239 in Bremerton.
His survivors include two brothers and a sister, all of Michigan.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. July 23 at Washington Veterans Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
W. Stanley Metcalf
W. Stanley Metcalf, 87, of Bremerton died July 9, 2001, in Bremerton.
He was born April 8, 1914, in Nooksack to Stanley and Jennie (Handy) Metcalf. He was a 1934 graduate of Bremerton High School.
He married
Lois Anderson on Sept. 17, 1937, in Berkeley, Calif.
Mr. Metcalf served in the Navy from 1935 to 1939, achieving the rank of baker second class. He later owned Metcalf's Bakery on Kitsap Lake for 30 years, retiring in 1974.
Mr. Metcalf was a member of William H. Upton Lodge 206, Free and Accepted Masons. He enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his wife; a brother, John of Tracyton; a sister, Morrell Jensen of Bremerton; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Winston, June 16, 2001.
A celebration of his life will be from 2 to 4 p.m. July 22 at the family home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Melba Hanberg
Melba Marie Hanberg, 88, of Silverdale died of heart failure June 15, 2001, at her home.
She was born Aug. 3, 1912, in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, to James and Mae (Richeson) DeMent. She graduated from Opheim High School in Opheim, Mont., attended Dillon Normal School in Dillon, Mont., and graduated from Western Washington University in Bellingham.
She married
Byron Hanberg on June 28, 1950, in Silverdale. He preceded her in death in 1999.
She taught sixth grade in Mukilteo and later worked in the public works department of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard during World War II.
Mrs. Hanberg enjoyed the outdoors and flowers. She was a member of Silverdale United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, James of Silverdale; two sisters, Charlotte Nutter of Bremerton and Ruth Womac of Port Angeles. She also was preceded in death by a son, Bill, in 1985.
A memorial service was held June 26 at Silverdale United Methodist Church. Inurnment was at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Hern triplets
Infant triplets born to Rick and Rebecca (Eagle) Hern of Poulsbo died at Tacoma General Hospital. They each died of complications because of their premature births. Savanna Lynn was born
July 3, 2001, and died July 4; Sienna Marie, born July 4, died July 5, and Zachary Delain, born July 4, died July 6.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Silverdale United Methodist Church, 9982 Silverdale Way.
George Dover
George Gylling Dover, 58, of Keyport died July 3, 2001, in Phoenix.
He was born Oct. 11, 1942, in Salt Lake City to John Plaskit Dover and June Una (Winger) Dover Winner. He graduated in 1960 from East High School in Salt Lake City.
He married
Patricia Ann Luker on Nov. 9, 1962, in Coalville, Utah.
He joined the Navy in 1961, retiring as a senior chief in 1984. He later was a senior logistics analyst with General Dynamics for 17 years.
He enjoyed reading, particularly historical and scientific documentaries.
He was a Christian.
Survivors include his wife; a son, James Gylling of Phoenix; two daughters, Trisha Shalleen Dover-Taylor of Poulsbo and Lenna-Kaye Himmelstein of Phoenix; two brothers, Robin of Las Vegas and Gilbert Winner of Salt Lake City; a sister, Wanda Shalleen Overmeyer of Salt Lake City; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother Michael.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m.
