Larry Smith
Larry Walton Smith Sr., 61, of Bremerton died of cancer July 8, 2001, at home.
He was born to Walton Smith and Peggy (Hines) Brown-Smith. He graduated from Bremerton High School and served in the Marines.
He was a cook in numerous restaurants throughout Kitsap County.
He enjoyed the Mariners and playing darts.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Walton Smith Jr. of Bremerton and Billy Connell of Illinois; four stepsons, Mike, Dean, Monty and Scott, all of Kitsap County; five daughters, Tracy Ann Smith, Laurie Clayton and Vickie Cerv, all of Bremerton, Tammy Minor of Illinois and Brenda Salt of Virginia; two stepdaughters, Leann and Tonya, both of the Tri-Cities area; a brother, Gary of Federal Way; a sister, Barbara King of Deming, N.M.; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne in 1998; and a sister, Gwen Richer of Belfair.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will follow.

James Hamilton
James H. Hamilton, 73, of Port Orchard died July 8, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Sept. 9, 1927, in Van de Grift, Pa., to James and Alma (Hartman) Hamilton. He was educated in Clarion, Pa.
He married Mary Gross on Dec. 17, 1947, in Virginia. She preceded him in death last year.
Mr. Hamilton served in the Air Force from 1945 to 1948, achieving the rank of sergeant.
He was a boilermaker at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1961 until his retirement. He later worked with the Humane Society for several years.
Mr. Hamilton had served as a Boy Scout commissioner for 15 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Jean Butt of Brighton, Mich., and Judy Hoffman of Port Townsend; three sisters, Mary Barnett of Cranberry, Pa., Virginia Lucas of Clarion and Blodwin Krick of Myerstown, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Cremation is under the direction of Cherry Grove Memorial Park with inurnment at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Randal Mercer
Randal L. Mercer, 46, of Port Orchard died July 8, 2001, at home.
He was born Jan. 9, 1955, in Bremerton to Calvin and Barbara (Atkins) Mercer. He graduated in 1973 from West High School.
He married Jill Wallis in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Mr. Mercer was a rigger for 28 years at Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Keyport and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. At the time of his death, he was a rigger supervisor at PSNS.
He enjoyed boating and traveling.
Survivors include his wife; his mother; a son, Richard of Port Orchard; two brothers, Stewart of Ravensdale and Jim of Federal Way; three sisters, Susan Rebelski of Tacoma, Kimberly Witte of Bremerton and Shannon Garman of Burien; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his father in 1979.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Merlin Belgard
Merlin Lee Belgard, 61, of Bremerton died of cancer July 7, 2001, in Seattle.
He was born Sept. 26, 1939, in Browning, Mont., to Catherine LaDue. He attended Butte High School in Butte, Mont.
Mr. Belgard served in the Navy from 1961 to 1972, achieving the rank of engine man third class. He later was a painter for 15 years, retiring in 1986.
He enjoyed fishing. He was a member of the American Legion and was a Catholic.
Survivors include his wife, Grace; his mother of Butte; two sons, Gerald of Aberdeen and Sonny of Bremerton; a daughter, Merceline LaDue of Bellingham; four brothers, Ben, Ronnie and Brian LaDue, all of Butte, and Shawn LaDue of Missoula, Mont.; three sisters, Judy LaDue of Bremerton and Debbie and Edith LaDue, both of Butte; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Raymond LaDue.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

John Pedersen
John Gilbert Pedersen, 72, of Port Orchard died of long-term heart complications July 9, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Sept. 22, 1928, in Tacoma to John and Freida (Townsend) Pedersen. He was a 1971 graduate of Bates Technical College in Tacoma.
Mr. Pedersen was a machinist with Lockheed, retiring in 1971. He also was a self-employed mechanic.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his companion, Jo Ann Small of Port Orchard; a son, Randy of Port Orchard; two daughters, Julie of Bremerton and Jennine Knight of Port Orchard; a stepsister, Joann Ganton of Kennewick; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Jon Dee "Jody" in 1972.
A memorial service will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the home of Jennine Knight in Port Orchard. Cremation is under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Nancy Hess
Nancy Helen Hess, 76, of Olalla died July 6, 2001, at Orchard Pointe Community Care Center.
She was born March 30, 1925, in Missoula, Mont., to Walter and Ann (Wickman) Brechbill.
She married Vernon Hess. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hess was a junior high teacher in Tacoma public schools.
She was active in the Olalla Farmers Market and the Olalla Community Club.
Survivors include four sons, Jeff of West Seattle, Breck of Olalla, Brian of Tacoma and Joel of Parkland; two daughters, Christine Rasmussen of Parkland and Robin Lea of Raleigh, N.C.; and 12 grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a son, Jon.
A memorial service will be at noon Saturday at the Olalla Community Club, 12970 Olalla Valley Road.

Paul Terry
Former Grapeview resident Paul Raymond Terry, 22, of Ephrata, Pa., died following an auto accident July 2, 2001, in Ephrata.
He was born Sept. 18, 1978, in Bremerton to Roy and Teri (Mertes) Terry Jr. He graduated in 1997 from North Mason High School. He attended the New Mexico Military Institute, Northwest College in Kirkland and Valley Forge College in Pennsylvania.
He married Katherine Sylvester on May 12 in Ephrata.
Mr. Terry served as youth pastor at Evangel Assembly of God in Ephrata.
He enjoyed working with youth and participating in sports.
Survivors include his wife; his parents of Grapeview; a brother, Jason of Abilene, Texas; a sister, Wendy of Silverdale; and his maternal grandmother, Lucy Hazel Mertes of Philomath, Ore. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather and his paternal grandparents.
A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at Belfair Assembly of God, 23001 NE State Route 3.

Inde Wahlquist
Inde M. Wahlquist, 103, of Poulsbo died July 4, 2001, at Martha & Mary Health Care Center.
She was born July 5, 1897, in Providence, R.I., to Evald and Julia Morander. She graduated from high school in Hartford, Conn.
She married Allan Wahlquist. He preceded her in death in 1991.
She enjoyed choral singing and competitive games, including bridge and scrabble. She was a Lutheran.
She is survived by a daughter, Irma Siler of Port Ludlow; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.
A celebration of life will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Port Gamble and Oct. 6 in Hartford.

Emmie Hentz
Emmie Mae Hentz, 66, of Silverdale died July 7, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born May 24, 1935, in Riverside, Texas, to Rube and Eliza (Houston) Taylor. She graduated from Gospel Hill High School in Riverside.
She married George Hentz Jr. on Feb. 14, 1999, in Bremerton.
Mrs. Hentz worked for Johnson Control in Keyport for seven years, retiring in 1998.
She was a member of Sinclair Missionary Baptist Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include her husband; a son, James Pruitt Jr. of Houston; three daughters, Laura Wheeler of Santee, Calif., and Lillian Horn and Sherley Pruitt, both of Port Orchard; four brothers, Floyd Taylor of Milwaukee, Milton Taylor of Pomona, Calif., and T.J. and Ira Taylor, both of Los Angeles; a sister, Rosie Jones of Houston; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ezra and Lee Taylor; and two sisters, Ruby Wyatt and Catherine Bryant.
A funeral service will be at noon Friday at Sinclair Missionary Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation.

Roman Lienarz
Roman H. Lienarz, 85, of Bainbridge Island died following a stroke July 9, 2001, at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center on Bainbridge Island.
He was born July 6, 1916, in Vienna, Austria. He received a master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1938 in Vienna, and a doctorate in physics in 1944 from the University of Goettingen in Goettingen, Germany.
He married Gertrude Spitzl on Dec. 28, 1939, in Vienna.
He was an aeronautical engineer with The Boeing Co. for 27 years, retiring in 1982.
He enjoyed photography and travel.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Barbara
Humberg of Bainbridge Island; and one granddaughter.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church on Bainbridge Island.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to the Island Wildlife Shelter at the Bloedel Reserve, 7501 NE Dolphin Drive, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110.

William Bean
William E. Bean, 82, of Bremerton died of pneumonia July 4, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 12, 1919, in Erwin, Tenn., to Charles and Mary (Edwards) Bean. He graduated in 1937 from Anacortes High School.
He married Myrtle Drovdahl on Jan. 31, 1951, in Bremerton.
Mr. Bean served in the Army during World War II.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 35 years, retiring as a maintenance general foreman in 1974.
Mr. Bean was a member of the Bremerton Duplicate Bridge Club. He also enjoyed woodworking.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Charles of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Dale of Campinas, Brazil; a daughter, Randena Walsh of Kingston; a brother, Robert of Burlington; a sister, Mildred Heller of Mount Vernon; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace.
Services are private. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
