Bernard Smyth
Bernard James Smyth, 90, of Kingston died Nov. 20, 1998, at Martha and Mary Nursing Home.
He was born Oct. 5, 1908, in Hamilton, Mont., to Bernard Joseph and Bertha (Swaze) Smyth. He was raised in Corvalis, Mont. He later moved to West Seattle to work as a carpenter. He retired in 1970 after more than 40 years in the trade.
Survivors include a son, Paul of Indianola; two daughters, Judy Sparks of Seattle and Claudia Braun of Marysville; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial gathering for friends and family will be be at 1 p.m. Nov. 27 at son Paul Smyth's house, 22922 Indianola Road, Poulsbo.
Cremation is at Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove.
Memorials may be made to Martha and Mary Nursing Home, Poulsbo.
Hugh Craig
Hugh "Don" Craig, 68, of Silverdale died Nov. 21, 1998, at his home, as a result of a massive stroke in May.
He was born Dec. 9, 1929, in Grosse Point, Mich., to Hugh and Edna (Moyer) Craig. He was raised and educated in Kitsap County.
On June 26, 1954, he married
Paula Crandall in Silverdale.
Mr. Craig began working as an apprentice welder at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1955. He retired in 1985 as a welder General Foreman with 34 years of accumulated government service.
He was an active member and past president of Chapter No. 14 of the National Association of Supervisors and a member of the Shop 26 "Stingers" in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Bowling League.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Stuart of Bremerton; a daughter, Dawna Sawyer of Bremerton; a brother, Charles of Tahuya; and four grandchildren, Adam and Hugh Craig and Crystal and Amber Jones.
A memorial gathering for family and friends will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Dec. 9 at Putter's Restaurant at the Rolling Hills Golf Course.
Cremation is at Cherry Grove Memorial Park.
Arrangements are by Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Memorials may be made to a church or charity of the donor's choice.
Paulene Topliff
Paulene Marie Topliff, 58, of Tacoma died Nov. 19, 1998.
She was born April 18, 1940, in Bremerton to George and Madeline (Rowley) Topliff. She was raised in Bremerton as a child and moved to Tacoma.
Survivors include three sons, Donald, Ron and John, all of Tacoma; a daughter, Lynette Beggs of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother, Calvin Topliff of Vashon; two sisters, Janice Rahll of Fond DuLac, Wis., and Georgia Brown of Bremerton; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her twin sister Arlene in 1997.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 25 at Gaff Funeral Home in Tacoma, with services immediately following.
Edward Halver
Long time Poulsbo resident Edward Halver, 95, died Nov. 23, 1998.
He was born Oct. 15, 1903, in Getchell, Wash., to Gustav and Sophia (Brau) Halver. He was raised in Hansville.
In the 1940s, he married
Sigrid Brandt Mekalsen in Poulsbo. She preceded him in death in 1995.
He worked in his younger years in the Washington logging industry. He then turned to commercial fishing in Washington and Alaska. In the 1950s, during the offseason from fishing, he worked as a rigger at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. In the 1960s, he worked for the North Kitsap School District in maintenance. He retired in 1969 after 45 years of commercial fishing.
He was a member of the North Kitsap Senior Citizens in Poulsbo and the Deep Sea Fisherman's Union.
Survivors include a son, Edean of Kelso; a daughter, Arlene Witt of Seattle; a brother, Arne Lund of Suquamish; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
At Mr. Halver's request, there will be no services.
Arrangements are by Poulsbo Mortuary, "The Stone Chapel."

B. Arlene Shew
B. Arlene Shew, 58, of Bremerton died Nov. 21, 1998.
She was born Sept. 7, 1940, in Anaconda, Mont., to Allen and Mildred (Alger) MacDonald. She was raised in Bremerton graduated from East High in 1958.
In June of 1959, she married
Lloyd "Bud" Shew in Bremerton.
She worked as a payroll clerk, at NUWC and at Texaco.
She was a member of Eastern Star.
Survivors include her husband; her mother; three sons, Allen and Craig, both of Silverdale, and Dale of Anchorage, Alaska; a daughter, Betty Denis of Port Orchard; two brothers, Donald and Frank, both of Bremerton; a sister, Diane Marrs of Bremerton; and three grandchildren, Brandon Tucker of Silverdale, and Megan and Bryce Denis, both of Port Orchard.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 27 at Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home.

JoAnn Cartmill
JoAnn Francis (Beck) Cartmill, 61, of Port Orchard died Nov. 14, 1998, at St. Francis Hospital of respiratory failure.
She was born Aug. 9, 1937, in Portland, Ore., to William and Martha (Hintz) Beck.
On Sept. 18, 1954, she married
Eddie Cartmill in Anchorage, Alaska.
She was active in the Lutheran church and as a volunteer, a member of TOPS, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a professional concessionaire.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Edward of La Conner and Randall of Port Orchard; a daughter, Jessica Cartmill Nichols of Mill Creek; a sister, Shirley Triolo of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Ricky.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 20 at the First Lutheran Church of Port Orchard with a gathering immediately following, also at the church. Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Lucille Love
Lucille Love, 88, of Bremerton died Nov. 17, 1998, at Quincy Valley Hospital of natural causes.
She was born March 10, 1910, to Guy and Mary Heckman. She was raised in Tyrone, Okla. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma.
On June 18, 1938, she married
John S. Love in Santa Fe, N.M. He preceded her in death in 1978.
Mrs. Love taught school in New Mexico and was a second grade teacher at Naval Avenue School for more than 20 years. She retired in 1972.
She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star in Hooker, Okla., a member of the Irene Greenleaf Orthopedic Guild and the Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean Six of Portland, Ore., and Peggy of Rock Island; three grandchildren, Kaaren Six of Portland, Ore., Kristin Six of Seattle and Jacob Six of Olympia. She was also preceded in death by a grandchild, Sarah Schlaman.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Nov. 27 at Miller Woodlawn cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Children's Hospital and Medical Center, Seattle.
Maebelle Goode
Maebelle Goode, 94, of Bremerton died Nov. 17, 1998, at Belmont Terrace of natural causes.
She was born Sept. 4, 1904, in Kenmore, N.D., to John and Thora (Jensen) Johnson. She graduated from Kenmore High School and then from North Dakota State University.
On April 4, 1953, she married
Blaine Goode in Seattle.
Mrs. Goode worked as a telephone supervisor at the U.S. Government Building in Seattle, retiring in 1967.
Survivors include her husband; a stepdaughter, Faye Nordman of Bremerton; five grandchildren, John Nordman of Bremerton, David Nordman of San Antonio, Texas, Michael Nordman of Dallas, Texas, Susan Nordman of Tacoma and Sandra Sheurina of Port Orchard; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be conducted at a later date.

Bessie Carden
Bessie Lee Carden, 93, of Bremerton died Nov. 16, 1998.
She was born Dec. 22, 1904, in Oklahoma Territory, West of Enid, Okla., to Thomas and Mary Alice Keesecker.
On July 22, 1922, she married
James Hayward Carden in Raton, N.M. He preceded her in death in 1993.
Mrs. Carden was a homemaker for most of her life.
Survivors include three sons, Lloyd of Sun City, Ariz., Keith of Bremerton and Donald of Tacoma; a daughter, Zanalee Hoffman of Vermillion, S.D.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
Arrangements are by Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home.
