Norman McDonald
Former Bremerton resident Norman Joseph McDonald, 44, of Loxahatchee Groves, Fla., died of kidney cancer April 23, 2001, at Palms West Hospital in Loxahatchee.
He was born Aug. 9, 1956, in Bremerton to Allen and Shirley (Leier) McDonald. He graduated from Bremerton High School in 1974, from Palm Beach Junior College in Lake Worth, Fla., in 1982, and from Central Florida University in Orlando in 1986. He also attended Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho.
He married
Patricia Ann Tyndall on Dec. 7, 1977, in Kensington, Md.
Mr. McDonald was a computer instructor for middle-school students and adults.
He volunteered with Boy Scouts of America and enjoyed genealogy. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include his wife; his parents; and a sister, Denise (McDonald) Thompson.
A memorial service was April 28 at The Church of Jesus of Christ of Latter-day Saints, Wellington Ward, Wellington, Fla. Interment
was at Hillcrest cemetery in West Palm Beach, Fla. Arrangements were under the direction of Palms West Funeral Home in Royal Palm, Fla.

Beverly Gilson
Beverly Ann Gilson, 50, of Port Orchard died of cancer May 10, 2001, in Port Orchard.
She was born Feb. 22, 1951, in Bremerton to Richard and Gilberte (Blanc) Maxwell. She graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1969 and from Fort Steilacoom Community College in 1982.
She married
Daren Gilson on July 4, 1970, in Bremerton.
Mrs. Gilson worked in merchandise display for 19 years. She enjoyed camping and interior decorating.
Survivors include her husband; her mother and stepfather, Gilberte and Bud Groskopf; two sons, Troy of The Woodlands, Texas, and Tony of Olalla; two brothers, Rich Maxwell of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Lee Maxwell of Port Orchard; a sister, Teresa Maxwell of Waterford, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
A potluck celebration of her life iwill be from 1 to 5 p.m. May 20 at the home of her brother, Lee, 174 SW Lider Road in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist at Rill Chapel.

Betty Vanshur
Betty Vanshur, 77, of Bremerton died May 11, 2001, at Ridgemont Terrace.
She was born Feb. 19, 1924, in Fremont, Neb.
She married
James Vanshur on March 2, 1946, in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1997.
Mrs. Vanshur was a member of the Eagles auxiliary.
Survivors include two sons, Thomas of Port Orchard and James of Port Angeles; two daughters, Sherry Cole of Port Orchard and Lois Vehrs of Bremerton; a sister, Muriel Ringle of Fremont; nine grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Lingle, and two sisters, Viola Harris and Maxine Price.
A funeral service will be at 3 p.m.
Tuesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Madge Eldridge
Madge E. Eldridge, 74, of Bremerton died of natural causes after complications from surgery May 7, 2001, at Naval Hospital Bremerton.
She was born May 26, 1926, in New York City to Ruth Stebner.
She married
Vincent Eldridge on Feb. 19, 1961, in Trenton, N.J.
Mrs. Eldridge was a homemaker. She enjoyed reading and playing bingo.
She is survived by her husband; and a son, Vincent of Bremerton.

Dorothy Brokenshire
Former Hansville resident Dorothy M. Brokenshire, 83, of Shoreline died of pulmonary emboli May 8, 2001, at Northwest Hospital in Shoreline.
She was born July 16, 1917, in Galesburg, Mich., to James and Eva (Wilcox) Eggstaff.
She married
John Brokenshire on Sept. 9, 1939, in Portland, Ore. He preceded her in death in 1988.
Mrs. Brokenshire was a secretary with RCA for 10 years. She retired in 1967.
She enjoyed music and oil painting. She was a member of the Edmonds Church of God.
She is survived by two daughters, Gail Nettles and Sue Alexander; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. May 19 at Edmonds Church of God.

Mim Scheyer
Mildred "Mim" Wallace Scheyer, 87, of Bremerton died May 8, 2001, in Bremerton.
She was born March 12, 1914, in Outlook, Wash., to Andy and Maude (Perry) Wallace. She graduated from Granger High School in 1932 and Central Washington Normal College in Ellensburg in 1934, and from the University of Washington in 1954.
She married
Dwight Scheyer on June 10, 1936, on her parent's farm in Outlook.
She was an elementary school teacher in the Bremerton area for more than 19 years, retiring in 1968.
She was a member of P.E.O., Triads and St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Paul of Bremerton and Rod of Bellevue; a sister, Doris Stephens of Scappoose, Ore.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Don Wallace.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 1547 Sheridan Road, in Bremerton.

Toby Sandegren
Toby D. Sandegren, 61, died of cancer May 7, 2001, at Washington Veterans Home.
He was born Jan. 31, 1940, in Tacoma to Paul and Doris Sandegren. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma in 1958.
He served in the Navy from 1958 to 1964.
He enjoyed the Hood Canal Beach, where he farmed oysters for 20 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Heather Saling of Silverdale; a brother, Joseph Sandegren of Belfair; and three grandchildren.
Private services were held.
Carol Mekalsen
Carol Ann Mekalsen, 48, of Kingston died of cancer April 29, 2001, at home.
She was born Oct. 15, 1952, in Port Angeles to Rodger and Dorothea Kentner (Cary) Ebbs. She graduated in 1971 from Lincoln High School in Seattle.
She worked in landscaping and was a care giver for 20 years.
She enjoyed animals and crocheting.
Survivors include a daughter, Anna Hoar of Hansville; a brother, Jeff Jensen of Lake City; a sister, Kathy Wood of Hansville; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by a brother, Bob Ebbs.
A potluck celebration of her life will be at 2 p.m. May 26 at 8581 Gust Halvor Road in Hansville. Arrangements are under the direction of Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society.
Stella James
Stella M. James, 90, of Port Orchard died May 8, 2001, at Port Orchard Care Center.
She was born Jan. 1, 1911, in Geddes, S.D., to Thomas and Clara (Crane) Maiden. She attended high school in Geddes and attended college in Illinois, graduating in 1934.
She married
Robert F. James on July 16, 1947, in San Diego. He preceded her in death in 1996.
She taught school in a one-room school in South Dakota. She was an illustrator with Lockheed Aerospace in California and at Bangor for 30 years.
She was a member of The Bremerton Community Concert Assocciation, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard.
Survivors include a sister, Thelma Gilbert of Kansas City. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Lowel and Laurence Maiden.
A funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Monday, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Bub Sladek
Former Port Orchard resident, Fred "Bub" Sladek, 75, of Clover, S.C., died April 25, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center in South Carolina.
He was born Aug. 20, 1926, in Columbus, Ohio, to Fredrick and Dorothy (Jones) Sladek. He was a 1944 graduate of South Kitsap High School.
He married
JoAnn Ely on March 9, 1947, in Gig Harbor.
He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946.
Mr. Sladek was a diesel and aviation mechanic.
He enjoyed people and was a musician.
Survivors include his wife of seven years, Lois Sladek; his former wife of 46 years, JoAnn Sladek of Tucson; a son, Rick of Kent; three daughters, Becky Jo Bealer of Port Orchard, and Carrie Lynn Santistevan and Cathie Bryan, both of Tucson; two sisters, Mary Schumacher of Olalla and JoAnn Stanton of Port Orchard; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marguerite Duchemin.
Services were held in South Carolina.
Paul Wallace
Paul C. Wallace, 62, formerly of Bremerton, died of an aortic aneurysm April 27, 2001, in San Jose, Calif.
He was born Sept. 19, 1938, in San Francisco. He graduated from Bremerton High School in 1956 and Montana State University in 1961.
Mr. Wallace was a purchasing agent for Kaiser Aluminum for 23 years. He also worked for Northrop and Lockheed Shipyard.
He was a member of the San Jose Tennis Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Kelley Sutherland of Arroyo Grande, Calif., and Erin Wallace of North Hampton, Mass.; and one grandchild.
