Helen Evans
Helen Louise Babin Evans, 81, of Bremerton died April 30, 2001, at her daughter's home in Seabeck.
She was born March 1, 1920, in Sherman, Texas, to Jim and Ida (Fisher) Gibson. She graduated in 1982 from Monterey Peninsula College in Monterey, Calif.
She married
Paul Babin. He preceded her in death in 1951.
She was a waitress at numerous restaurants in Carmel By The Sea, Calif., for 30 years, retiring in 1976.
She enjoyed crafts and gardening.
Survivors include four daughters, Pam Clark, Jeanette Evans and Shirley Feliciano, all of Bremerton, and Thelma Graham of Monterey; a brother, Franklin Hix of Watsonville, Calif.; a sister, Irene Williams of Branchville, N.J.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Cecil Outlaw; and a daughter, Bobbie Woods in 1999.
A celebration of her life will be all day Saturday at her daughter Pam's home in Bremerton. Cremation is under the direction of Cherry Grove Memorial Park.

William Calhoun
William Mein Calhoun, 68, of Indianola died April 26, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Dec. 16, 1932, in Olympia to George and Gladys (Wasson) Calhoun. He was educated in Olympia.
He married
Margaret Witham.
Mr. Calhoun served in the Navy from 1950 to 1972, achieving the rank of lieutenant commander. He received the Presidential Service Badge and two Good Conduct medals.
Mr. Calhoun was the chief communications officer in the White House under both the Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon administrations. Following his retirement from the Navy, he owned a sign company, Calcraft Co., retiring in 1995.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Scott of Seaview, Erle of Eugene, Ore., and Arthur of Longview; a daughter, Donna Petrillo of Copper Center, Alaska; a stepson, Charlie Davis of Pasadena, Md.; three stepdaughters, Averil Story of Kingston, Lauriann Moore of Poulsbo and Dianna Cox of Indianola; and 15 grandchildren.
At his request, no service is planned. Cremation is under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove Memorial Park.

Kathleen Pedersen
Kathleen M. Pedersen, 95, of Belfair died of natural causes April 30, 2001, in Port Orchard.
She was born Jan. 30, 1906, in Crookston, Minn., to Clyde and Beatrice (Chandler) Hasbrouck. She graduated in 1924 from Crookston High School and in 1926 from Crookston Normal School.
She married
Carl Pedersen on Aug. 14, 1928, in Crookston. He preceded her in death in 1997.
She taught school for two years in Minnesota. Mrs. Pedersen and her husband later co-owned Rainier Electronics in Seattle for 53 years.
She enjoyed oil painting and spending time with her family. She was a member of Unity Church in Seattle.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Wentlandt of Belfair; a brother, Phillip Hasbrouck of Crookston; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Keith and Kenneth.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home.

Shirley Walton
Shirley Irene Walton, 74, of Seabeck died May 1, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born April 4, 1927, in Bremerton to Herbert and Blanche "Betty" (Larson) Andrus. She graduated in 1945 from Bremerton High School.
She married
H. Ray Walton Jr. on May 26, 1946, in Olympia. He preceded her in death in 1994.
She and her husband owned the Walton House Bed & Breakfast in Seabeck for 13 years.
Mrs. Walton enjoyed decorating the bed and breakfast and spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of Crosby Chapel.
Survivors include three sons, Tyler of Bremerton and Rory of Seabeck and Christopher of Monroe; a daughter, Aimee of Seabeck; a brother, David Hayford of Bremerton; a sister, Patricia Turner of Mill Creek; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
Clara Hahto
Clara Ellen Hahto, 84, of Kingston died April 28, 2001, in Bremerton.
She was born March 31, 1917, in Bloomfield, Mont., to Floyd and Margarett Liming.
She married
John Emil Hahto on Nov. 18, 1953, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. He preceded her in death in 1981.
Mrs. Hahto was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, John Belgarde Jr. of Suquamish; a daughter, Gloria Tupper of Kingston; a brother, Ike Liming of Poulsbo; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Clara Thompson, a brother, Lewis Liming; and a sister, Margarett Smith.

Cyril Jenkins
Cyril A. Jenkins, 79, of Bremerton died following a stroke April 24, 2001, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
He was born Aug. 5, 1921, in Way, Idaho, to Lorran and Margaret (Johnson) Jenkins. He graduated in 1939 from Grace High School in Idaho.
Mr. Jenkins served in the Navy from 1942 to 1945. He was an aviation metalsmith.
He married
Jean Coe on April 20, 1946, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Mr. Jenkins worked with the Los Angeles County Fire Department for 22 years, retiring as a captain in 1972.
He was a member of the Olympic Vintage Auto and Hood Canal Detectorists clubs.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, David of Port Orchard, Stephen of Sacramento, Calif., and John of Redondo Beach, Calif.; two brothers, Clarke of Mesa, Ariz., and Boyd of Garden Grove, Calif.; three sisters, Veda Mae of Geneva, Switzerland, Joan of Chandler, Ariz., and Judy of Gilbert, Ariz.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde and Eldon; and by a sister, Afton Ritter.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. May 20 at Long Lake Community Center in Port Orchard.

Linda Simmons
Former Bremerton resident Linda Diane Simmons, 50, of Anchorage, Alaska, died of cancer April 26, 2001, at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.
She was born May 2, 1950, in Bremerton to Gordon and Janice (Olund) Ruef. She attended Marion Elementary School in Bremerton.
She was executive director of a broadcasting company in Anchorage.
Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Janice and Ray McKee of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; and a brother, Gordon Ruef of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
A memorial service will be Friday evening at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Anchorage. Arrangements are under the direction of Beck's Funeral Home in Edmonds.

Lanne Ellard
Former Port Hadlock resident Pearl-Anne "Lanne" Ellard, 68, of Port Townsend died April 29, 2001, at Bremerton Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Sept. 3, 1932, in Port Townsend to Herbert Oscar and Nell (Charlton) Bromley. She attended Port Townsend High School.
She married
Andy Ellard in 1973 in Port Townsend. He preceded her in death in 1995.
Mrs. Ellard was a mail carrier for 15 years, retiring in 1986.
Survivors include her mother; a son, John Tyner of Chimacum; three daughters, Cassie Thompson of Poulsbo, Sandie Metcalf of Chimacum and Jessica Marlow of Irondale; four stepsons, Brian and Jeff Ellard, both of Port Townsend, and Doug and David Ellard, both of California; two brothers, George Bromley of Port Townsend and Mike Bromley of Arizona; a sister, Mardella Kremnetz of Maple Valley; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Jane.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Kosec Funeral Home in Port Townsend, followed by a 1 p.m. funeral service. Interment
will be at Rosedale Memorial cemetery in Payette, Idaho.
Berle Spilman
Berle Boyd Spilman, 76, of Seabeck died of Alzheimer's disease April 26, 2001, at the Tacoma Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Dec. 12, 1924, in Duckabush to Abrin and LaVerne Spilman. He attended Grand Coulee High School.
Mr. Spilman served in the Army from 1943 to 1946, achieving the rank of private first class. He received the World War II Victory Medal and the American Service Medal.
He married
Kathleen Parker in 1949. She preceded him in death in 1966.
For 35 years, Mr. Spilman was a pipefitter at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and a logger. He retired in 1971.
He was a member of the Crosby Community Club and enjoyed restoring cars and trucks.
Survivors include four sons, James, Steve and Brian, all of Seabeck, and Braden of California; a daughter, Diane Singer of Seabeck; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by a son, Donald.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Lewis Funeral Chapel and from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Forest Lawn cemetery. A gathering for family and friends will follow at the Crosby Community Club.
Betty Abbott
Betty E. Abbott, 63, of Manchester died from complications of Kearns-Sayre Syndrome on April 27, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born July 7, 1937, in Bakersville, N.C., to Ada H. Jarrett. She attended Bowman High School in Bakersville, graduating in 1955.
She married
Harold Abbott on Nov. 23, 1957, in Washington, D.C.
Mrs. Abbott enjoyed being a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; her mother of Manchester; and a daughter, Michelle Cartwright of Port Orchard.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Connie Lanterno
Connie Mae Lanterno, 52, of Bremerton died April 26, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Oct. 9, 1948, in Bremerton to Paul and Grace (Pfeifer) Beliveau. She graduated in 1966 from East High School and from Olympic College.
She married
Basil Lanterno on Sept. 21, 1968.
She was a secretary for the business and technology department at Olympic College.
She enjoyed artistic crafts and was an avid reader.
Survivors include her husband; her parents of Bremerton; two daughters, Jennifer Keifert of Bremerton and Stacy Spurling of Anacortes; two brothers, Kevin Beliveau of Bremerton and Dean Beliveau of Kent; two sisters, Diane Meucci of Bothell and Karen Truitt of Port Orchard; and two grandchildren.
At her request, no service is planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel with cremation by Cherry Grove Crematory.
