Larry Mauratic
Larry Mauratic, 70, of Port Orchard died of natural causes on April 17, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born in Chicago on Nov. 22, 1930, to Frank and Pearl (Jones) Mauratic.
Mr. Mauratic served in the Navy from 1948-52. He was a machinist mate fireman.
He married
Charlotte Ehlers on July 16, 1955, in Dalton, Ill.
Mr. Mauratic later was a speed operator with the Acme Steel Mill in Riverdale, Ill., for 24 years. He retired in 1987.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Elks in Riverdale, and South Kitsap Presbyterian Church in Port Orchard.
Survivors include his wife; his mother of Peotone, Ill.; three sons, Joseph of Port Orchard and Richard and Steven, both of Valparaiso, Ind.; a daughter, Lorrie Mauratic-Herrick of Keller, Texas; three sisters, Joyce Hanson of Lansing, Ill., Peggy Maltby of Green Bay, Wis., and Debbie Kappel of Beecher, Ill.; and 18 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Mauratic Jr. and a brother, Allan.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. today at South Kitsap Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Marion Falconer
Marion Elizabeth Falconer, 98, of Poulsbo died April 14, 2001, at Country Manor in Silverdale.
She was born Aug. 18, 1902, in Minneapolis, to Mary (Douglas) Falconer.
She worked in customer service at the Southern California Gas Company.
She enjoyed traveling and photography.
She was a Presbyterian.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Douglas, Harry and Ray Falconer; and a sister, Elsie.
Cremation is under the direction of The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove.
Arlene Hughes
Arlene H. Hughes, 77, of Bremerton died of heart- and respiratory-related illness April 16, 2001, at her home.
She was born Oct. 4, 1923, in Rolla, N.D., to James and Nora (Courteau) Jolliffe. She was a graduate of Rolla High School.
She married
Ernest "Vic" Hughes on Jan. 1, 1949, in Pasco.
Mrs. Hughes was a homemaker and worked in retail sales and management in Washington and Alaska.
She enjoyed gardening and family gatherings.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Dennis of Seabeck and David of Bremerton; three daughters, Barbara Mills and Sunnie Stier, both of Bremerton, and Judy Niemann of Oroville, Calif.; two brothers, Harley Jolliffe of St. John, N.D., and Arley Jolliffe of Cutbank, Mont.; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, James in 1953, and by six brothers and two sisters.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Kitsap Lake Baptist Church, 5802 Wilmont St. in Bremerton.

Marie Malone
Marie E. Malone, 68, of Port Orchard died April 16, 2001, in Tacoma.
She was born in Philadelphia on Sept. 28, 1932, to William and Ada Smith.
She married
Mack Malone on Aug. 29, 1958, in Norfolk, Va.
Mrs. Malone was a homemaker. She loved animals and enjoyed jazz.
She is survived by her husband.
At the family's request, there will be no service. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel with cremation at Cherry Grove Memorial Park.
Wilma Lindgren
Wilma L. Lindgren, 86, of Bremerton died April 15, 2001, at Belmont Terrace in Bremerton.
She was born March 30, 1915, in Page, N.D., to Giles and Minnie (Owens) Appel. She was a graduate of Page High School.
She married
Robert Lindgren on May 3, 1936, in Moorehead, Minn. He died in 1978.
Survivors include a son, Gary of Surprise, Ariz.; a daughter, Sandy Sherer of Lynnwood; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Gordon Haines
Gordon M. Haines, 87, of Poulsbo died April 14, 2001, in Issaquah.
He was born in Seattle on Sept. 30, 1913, to Charles and Mamie (Carlson) Haines. He graduated in 1931 from Lincoln High School in Seattle and attended the University of Washington.
Mr. Haines served in the Army from 1942-45, achieving the rank of staff sergeant.
He married
Ruth Peterson on April 22, 1950, in Poulsbo. She preceded him in death in 1998.
Mr. Haines was an engineering technician at the Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Station at Keyport for 31 years, retiring in 1978.
He enjoyed bowling and was a member of several military service organizations. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Poulsbo.
Survivors include two sons, Jeff of Poulsbo and Bill of Shoreline; a daughter, Susan McKinney of Sammamish; a brother, Ken of Bend, Ore.; and one grandchild.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, 18920 Fourth Ave. NE in Poulsbo. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

William Chess
William Frank Chess, 52, of Hoodsport died April 12, 2001, at his home.
He was born in Yakima on July 30, 1948, to Daniel and Wanda (Quinn) Chess. He graduated in 1966 from Federal Way High School and attended Seattle Community College.
Mr. Chess was a shipfitter and welder for Lockheed.
He enjoyed fishing and gardening with his cat "Casper."
Survivors include his former wife, Elizabeth of Belfair; five sons, Justin and Nathan, both of Belfair, Daniel of Yakima, Jeremy of Elmer City, Wash., and Jacob of Everett; a brother, David of Port Orchard; and four sisters, Joan Mackey of Troy, Mont., Dorothy Kittell of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Colleen York of Portland, Ore., and Gladys Petersen of Baring, Wash.
The family held a private gathering. Cremation was under the direction of McComb Funeral Home in Shelton.
Markus Schmitter
Markus Thomas Schmitter, 39, of Tahuya died April 14, 2001, from injuries sustained in an accident at his home. He died at Harbor View Medical Center in Seattle.
He was born Sept. 5, 1961, in Dulliken, Switzerland, to Paul and Ida Rosa (Schleiss) Schmitter. He graduated from high school in Switzerland.
Mr. Schmitter served in the Swiss Army. He later was a chef and a self-employed ferrier.
He married
Jill Lutz in Bremerton in 1998. She preceded him in death last year.
Mr. Schmitter enjoyed endurance horseback riding and was a member of numerous ferrier and equine associations.
He is survived by his parents; a son, Aramas of Tahuya; two brothers, Manfred of Washington and Beat of Switzerland; and two sisters, Elizabeth and Priska, both of Switzerland.
A memorial service is planned for 4 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Norman Weythman
Norman Weythman, 79, of Bremerton died April 6, 2001, at the Masonic Retirement Center in Des Moines.
He was born Jan. 21, 1922, in Wenatchee to John and Marie (Strickler) Weythman. He graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1940 and attended Olympia Community College in Olympia.
He married
Helen Campbell in April 1947.
Mr. Weythman served in the Navy from 1941 to 1947. He later was a mechanical engineer at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 32 years.
He was involved with the Boy Scouts and Kitsap County Fire District 9. He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, John B. of Vaughn; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth of Selah; a brother, Donald of Monitor; a sister, Jean Vaughn of Des Moines; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Bremerton.

Michele Lamey
Michele Lamey, 48, of Southworth died of breast cancer April 13, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Dec. 24, 1952, in Seattle to Kenneth and Lillian (Rutz) Moore. She graduated in 1971 from Hazen High School in Renton.
She married
Malcolm Lamey on May 22, 1979, in Seattle.
She was a retail clerk in grocery stores owned by her family in Kitsap County. She also was a horticulturist in the Southworth area.
She enjoyed gardening.
She is survived by her former husband; her mother, Lillian Moore of Port Orchard; two daughters, Sara and Andrea, both of Southworth; two brothers, Paul Moore of Federal Way and Ken Moore of Eastern Washington; and two sisters, Sharron Timme of Renton and Linda Eisenhower of Everett. She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Carol.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. May 5 at Gardenscapes in Southworth.

Kathryn Johnson
Kathryn R. Johnson, 88, of Bremerton died of cancer April 9, 2001, at Claremont East Retirement Apartments in Bremerton.
She was born Oct. 14, 1912, in Scobey, Mont., to William and Mae Barney. She graduated from high school in Scobey, from Southern Oregon College and from Monmouth College, also in Oregon.
She taught school in Montana and Oregon for 22 years and in Washington for 25 years. She retired in 1979.
She enjoyed music and art.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Robert E.V. Black; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Hayes; and a sister, Alice McIntyre.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, also at Lewis Funeral Chapel.
