Hazel Jones
Former Bremerton resident Hazel Janette Jones, 98, of Lacey died of natural causes April 13, 2001, at Panorama City Convalescent Center in Lacey.
She was born Dec. 18, 1902, in LaPorte, Ind., to George Ross and Minnie (French) Alexander.
She married
Charles "Jack" Jones on Sept. 14, 1919, in Dayton, Wash. He preceded her in death in 1985.
Mrs. Jones was a homemaker. She was a member of The Order of the Eastern Star Reliance Chapter 70, The Daughters of the Nile Hatsu Temple 1 and First Baptist Church of Olympia.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Gerry Jones of Vashon Island and Gayle Kirkorian of Piedmont, Calif.; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a son, Maurice, and a brother, Donald Alexander.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at the chapel of Panorama City Convalescent Center in Lacey, with private entombment at Sunrise Terrace Mausoleum at Forest Lawn cemetery in Bremerton. Arrangements are under the direction of Mills and Mills Funeral Directors in Olympia.
Memorial donations may be made to the March of Dimes.
Lawrence Sowle
Former Poulsbo resident Lawrence Bradley Sowle, 63, of Eagle River, Alaska, died from complications of pneumonia April 12, 2001, at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.
He was born Sept. 9, 1937, in Seward, Alaska, to Lawrence and Rae Rita Chilburg. He graduated in 1954 from high school in Sitka, Alaska.
Mr. Sowle served in the Army from 1957 to 1959 and from 1960 to 1980. He was a helicopter maintenance specialist and achieved the rank of sergeant 1st class. He received many awards and medals.
He was a Star Trek fan and enjoyed spending time with his grandson. He was an Episcopalian.
Survivors include his mother, Rae Rita Sowle of Wrangell, Alaska; a son, Lawrence Bradley II of Bremerton; a daughter, Patricia Sowle of Poulsbo; a brother, Patrick of Eagle River; a sister, Elizabeth Nore of Wrangell; an adopted sister, Luerita Whitewing of Eagle River; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and James.
Visitation will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Funeral Home in Eagle River. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, also at Evergreen Funeral Home. Interment
will be in the national cemetery at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.

Charles Johnson
Charles Johnson, 74, of Kingston died of cardiac arrest April 16, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Feb. 10, 1927, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to Charles and Anne (Evans) Johnson. He graduated from high school in Winnipeg.
Mr. Johnson served in the Canadian Army during World War II. He later worked many years in masonry and as a tile setter.
He married
Marjorie Sharp in Bremerton in 1971. She preceded him in death last year.
Mr. Johnson enjoyed golf and fishing.
Survivors include three sons, Ron Johnson of Bothell, Larry Johnson of Mukilteo and Rob Christensen of Marysville; two daughters, Karin Christensen of Bremerton and Darlene Johnson Hurt of Mukilteo; a sister, Edna Knight of Surrey, Canada; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kingston Christian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society.

Mina Carter
Mina Carter, 84, of Port Orchard died March 11, 2001, in Bremerton.
She was born Feb. 5, 1917, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
She is survived by her husband, Troy Carter.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at South Kitsap Presbyterian Church, 4705 Jackson Ave. SE in Port Orchard.

Everett Magnusson
Everett C. Magnusson, 53, of Bremerton died April 14, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Aug. 18, 1947, in Concordia, Kan., to Carl and Rubie (Baker) Magnusson. He graduated in 1965 from Longmont High School in Longmont, Colo., and attended Chapman College.
He married
Gayre Fox on May 19, 1990, in Reno, Nev.
Mr. Magnusson served in the Navy for 24 years, achieving the rank of lieutenant commander and retiring in 1994. He received the Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal.
He enjoyed woodworking and manufacturing rubber stamps.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Everett Jr. of Reno, Jason Hill of Concord, Calif., and Dale Staley of Modesto, Calif.; a daughter, Dawn Lopez of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service with full military honors will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Kathryn Johnson
Kathryn R. Johnson, 88, of Bremerton died of cancer April 9, 2001, at Claremont East Retirement Apartments in Bremerton.
She was born Oct. 14, 1912, in Scobey, Mont., to William and Mae Barney. She graduated from high school in Scobey, from Southern Oregon College and from Monmouth College, also in Oregon.
She taught school in Montana and Oregon for 22 years and in Washington for 25 years, retiring in 1979.
She enjoyed music and art.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Robert EV. Black; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a brother, Vernon Hayes, and a sister, Alice McIntyre.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, also at Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Joseph Lajoie
Joseph Eugene Lajoie, 87, of Port Orchard died of Alzheimer's disease April 13, 2001, at Western State Hospital in Tacoma.
He was born Jan. 17, 1914, in Willimantic, Conn., to Frank and Rose (Laramee) Lajoie.
He married
Ellen Anna Lassen on Sept. 24, 1938, in Long Beach, Calif.
He served in the Navy from 1934 to 1954, achieving the rank of chief boiler technician. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor.
He was a machinist at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 15 years, retiring in 1969.
He enjoyed bowling and trap/skeet shooting. He was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of Ellensburg; two daughters, Joy McGee of Ellensburg and Sharon Lajoie of Port Orchard; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Gene.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church. Interment
will take place at Tahoma National cemetery. Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Ruth Carrier
Ruth LaVerne Carrier, 76, of Port Orchard died April 10, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Sept. 11, 1924, in Santa Paula, Calif., to Ernest and Myrtle (Guthrie) Baker Sr. She attended school in California, graduating from Santa Paula Union High School in 1942 and Pacific Union College in 1946.
She married
Floyd Carrier in 1946 in California. He preceded her in death in 1965.
She was a supervisor at Naval Undersea Warfare Center at Keyport from 1966 until retiring in 1988.
She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Organization and the Federal Managers Association. She was a Protestant.
Survivors include a brother, Ernest Baker of Camarillo, Calif.; and a sister, Marjorie Bezona of Bremerton.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. Interment
will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery.

Gene Darling
Eugene "Gene" Clare Darling, 74, of Bremerton died of natural causes April 15, 2001, in Bremerton.
He was born Aug. 31, 1926, in Bremerton to James and Birdie (Reynolds) Darling. He attended Bremerton High School.
He married
Colleen Thompson on June 29, 1951, in Forks.
He was a warehouseman for Turner & Peace in Seattle.
He enjoyed playing his guitar at local nursing homes and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Ricky of Bremerton; and a daughter, Vicki Lynn of Bremerton. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Barbara Graham, Hazel Thompson and Marguerite McMackin.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn cemetery. Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Normand Berger
Former Bainbridge Island resident Normand O. Berger, 76, of Black Diamond died April 13, 2001, in Black Diamond.
He was born June 4, 1924, in Fall River, Mass., to Alfonse and Mathilde (Caron) Berger.
Mr. Berger served in the Army during World War II, achieving the rank of sergeant.
He married
Lorraine Vallee on Nov. 26, 1947.
Mr. Berger worked in civil service for 33 years. He worked in Newport, R.I., and at the Naval Undersea Warfare Training Center at Keyport.
He enjoyed ballroom dancing and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Enumclaw.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, David of Poulsbo, Damien of Enumclaw, Noel of Whidbey Island and Norbert of Kent; three daughters, Yvonne Silvia of Rio Rancho, N.M., Lynette Schmidt of Nome, Alaska, and Celine Cragerud of Monroe; and 30 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Brother Normand Berger; and a grandson, Peter Normand Silvia.
A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Wednesday, also at Sacred Heart. Interment
will be at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent. Arrangements are by Weeks' Enumclaw Funeral Home.

Maimee Gould Chapin
Former Port Orchard and Bremerton resident Maimee Gould Chapin, 88, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., died April 11, 2001, in Jacksonville Beach.
She was born May 12, 1912, in Port Orchard to Clarence and Ida Davis. She graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1930, and attended Olympic College.
She married
Donald Rice "Don" Gould in October 1932 in Seattle. The Goulds owned and operated a grocery store in Bremerton for 40 years. Mr. Gould preceded his wife in death in 1983.
She married
Harold Chapin in 1988. He preceded her in death in 1992.
She had been a member of The Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 216, in Bremerton and the Bremerton Organ Club. She also was a member of Palms Presbyterian Church in Florida.
Survivors include three daughters, Merlaine Latham of Jacksonville Beach, Dolores Lund of Seattle and Norma Alguard of Renton; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by siblings, Millie Michaels and Clarence Davis Jr.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home, with interment at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
