Betty Laber
Betty J. Laber, 69, of South Colby died Jan. 3, 2001, at home.
She was born Feb. 27, 1931, in Heaton, N.D., to Michael and Grace (Janish) Seil.
She attended high school in North Dakota.
She married
Morris Laber on Jan. 20, 1948, in Sykeston, N.D. He preceded her in death Jan. 23, 2000.
She worked for 13 years as postmaster at the South Colby Grocery, retiring in 1978.
She enjoyed the outdoors.
Survivors include a son, Keith of Boring, Ore.; two daughters, Rikki DeBlois of Seabeck and Melody Wall of Bremerton; a brother, Vic Seil of North Dakota; four sisters, Margaret Wilson of Iowa, Joan Kahl of North Dakota, Mary Speed and Ann Grant, both of Minnesota; and five grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine; and three brothers, Frank, Johnny and Harold.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Jan. 13 at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Thomas Brown
Thomas Edison Brown, 88, of Poulsbo died Dec. 28, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Sept. 24, 1912, in Clinton to William and Eva (Terry) Brown.
He married
Lida Robinson on Oct. 15, 1932, in Silverdale.
He worked in civil service as a painter for 32 years, retiring in 1973.
He was a member of the Kiwanis in Poulsbo.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, William of Salkum, Wash., Fred of Santa Maria, Calif., and Robert of Silverdale; a daughter, Shirley Tucker of Bremerton; a brother, Riley of Bow; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Florence Brown in 1936; three brothers, Lawrence, Chauncey and Ernest; and two sisters, Stella Davis and Ruth Haughtby.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Jan. 13 at Keyport Bible Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Jack Russell
John E. "Jack" Russell, 75, of Bainbridge Island died Dec. 30, 2000, at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Sept. 11, 1925, in Aurora Mo., to Ora and Elsie (Hudson) Russell. He graduated in 1942 from high school in Missouri and attended Iowa State University.
He served in the Navy.
Mr. Russell was an engineer with Pacific Northwest Bell for 36 years, retiring in 1983.
He enjoyed space science.
Survivors include his wife, Marguerite (Crawford) Russell; three daughters, Maureen Hagle of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Laurie Russell of Poulsbo and JoAnne Helmuth of Winnemucca, Nev.; two brothers, Hudson of Joplin, Mo., and Dale of California; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
Charlotte Bock
Charlotte Stevens Bock, 91, of Gig Harbor died Jan. 3, 2001, at Manor Care of Gig Harbor.
She was born Jan. 1, 1910, in Portland, Ore., to Paul and Johanna (Nyberg) Fors. She was a 1927 graduate of Franklin High School in Portland.
She married
Eugene Stevens in 1929 in Kelso.
He preceded her in death Feb. 18, 1978. In 1980, she married
Carl Bock. He preceded her in death July 4, 1987.
She worked for an optometrist and worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in the optical department for 19 years, retiring in 1974.
She enjoyed the outdoors and photography.
Survivors include two daughters, Nanette Bullough of Gig Harbor and Wendy Sarrett of Des Moines; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for noon Saturday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A graveside service at Forest Lawn cemetery will follow.
Barbara Haslan
Former Bremerton resident Barbara J. Haslan, 69, died Dec. 21, 2000, in Shoreline.
She was born June 2, 1931, in Seattle to James and Lucille (Williams) Stokes.
She served as Worthy Matron Myrtle Chapter 48 O.E.S. and was a member of Daughters of the Nile.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Robert Haslan; two sons, James and Donald; two daughters, Sherrie Bringedahl and Gail Kelley; a sister, Shirley Alden; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service is planned for noon Sunday at Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home in Seattle.

Carrie Helstad
Former Poulsbo resident Karen "Carrie" Helstad, 78, of Williston, N.D., died of pneumonia Nov. 14, 2000, in Williston.
She was born Nov. 17, 1921, in Eidsvag, Norway, to Torval and Olina (Meisal) Iversen. She attended North Kitsap High School.
She married
Alfred Helstad on Dec. 8, 1946, in Everett.
Mrs. Helstad was a homemaker and helped on their wheat farm. She taught Sunday school at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Steve, Rod and Leon, all of Williston; a daughter, Linda Paulson of Cartwright, N.D.; a brother, Iver Iverson of Poulsbo; two sisters, Tordis Rasmussen of Poulsbo and Delores Ulvang of Puyallup; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held Nov. 17 in Williston.
Frank Fedenk
Frank Fedenk, 84, of Bremerton died Dec. 29, 2000, in Bremerton.
He was born July 3, 1916, in Patterson, N.J.
He married
Eleanora Webster on Nov. 25, 1942, in Bremerton.
He served in the Army from 1942 to 1945, achieving the rank of 1st Sgt. He received the Asian Pacific Campaign Medal and the American Defense Medal.
He worked in the boiler shop at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 26 years, retiring in 1973. He then worked at the Bremerton Tennis and Swim Club for 26 years, retiring in 1994.
Mr. Fedenk was a member of the American Legion and a partner in Webster Frozen Food Lockers and Mission Holly Farms.
He enjoyed fishing and grafting fruit trees.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, E. Penny Gibson of Olympia and Jean Rae Black of Poulsbo; and two grandchildren.
At his request, no services are planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Jean Livingston
Jean Burton Livingston, 78, of Bremerton died Dec. 29, 2000, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center.
He was born April 13, 1922, in Satsop to Luzerne and Beulah (Poundstone) Livingston. He graduated in 1940 from Elma High School in Elma. He received degrees in metallurgical engineering and in industrial engineering from the University of Washington.
He served in the Army from 1943 to 1946, achieving the rank of second lieutenant.
He married
Blanche Green on Aug. 14, 1949.
Mr. Livingston worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 30 years, retiring in 1980. He was a supervisory metallurgist in the quality assurance office.
He was a member of the Elks and the Experimental Aircraft Association.
He attended St. Luke's United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Steven of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and a daughter, Sherry Blondheim of Kennewick.
Services were held in Satsop.

David Leonard
David O. Leonard, 67, died Dec. 31, 2000, at his Bremerton residence.
He was born June 2, 1933, in Spartanburg, S.C., to David and Willie Mae (Bell) Leonard. He was a 1952 graduate of Spartanburg High School and graduated from Newberry College in South Carolina.
He served in the Navy from 1953 to 1957 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
He married
Ines Massavelli on Feb. 8, 1958, in Chicago.
He was an electronics technician at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center at Keyport for 30 years, retiring in 1994.
Survivors include his wife; a son, David Jr. of North Bend; a daughter, Dee (Leonard) DeMello of Bremerton; a brother, Robert of West Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Sylvia Morlan of Oklahoma; and four grandchildren.
Visitation and a memorial service are planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Raymond Thomas
Raymond Burton Thomas, 73, of Port Orchard died of cancer Dec. 31, 2000, at Ridgemont Terrace Convalescent Center.
He was born Dec. 24, 1927, in Standardville, Utah, to Alvin and Grace Burton (Bluemel) Thomas. He graduated from Malad High School in Malad, Idaho. He graduated from Idaho College in 1951.
He married
Betty Lou Wallace on June 18, 1974, in Kapalua, Hawaii. She preceded him in death in 1997.
He was a pharmacist and owner of Haas Drug in Dallas, Ore., for 40 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of Rotary and enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include two sons, Jeff Wiggall of Lake Oswego, Ore., and Eric Thomas of Washington; three daughters, Linda Tillman of Northridge, Calif., Chris Anderson of Dallas and Becky Hageman of Port Orchard; a sister, Grace Stone of Cedar City, Utah; 20 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother; Ceril; and a son, Raymond.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. today at the Dallas Mortuary Chapel, 287 Washington St., Dallas. Local arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist at Rill Chapel.
