Carl Meili
Carl A. Meili, 90, a Bremerton dentist for many years, died Feb. 5, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born July 4, 1911, in Bremerton to Carl and Hattie (Pittack) Meili Sr. He graduated from Bremerton's Union High School in 1928 and received his degree in dentistry from North Pacific College (now Oregon University) in Portland, Ore.
Before beginning his practice, Dr. Meili worked as an operator with Seattle City Light and served on a merchant ship traveling to China. He passed his state dentistry examination in 1933, establishing his practice in Bremerton in the Bremer Building.
He served in the Air Force from 1942 to 1946 as chief dental officer at McClellan Field in Sacramento, Calif., and at Hill Field in Ogden, Utah. At the end of World War II, he had become a dental surgeon and a lieutenant colonel, serving in Italy.
He married
Pauline "Pauli" Fletcher of Seattle in Las Vegas on Dec. 10, 1956.
Dr. Meili was past president of the Kitsap Dental Society and a life member of the American Dental Association. He also held memberships in William Upton Masonic Lodge 206, the Nile Temple Shrine and the Elks.
He enjoyed traveling, boating, fishing, hunting, reading, gourmet cooking and classical music. He had played violin with the Fancho Marco Shows and the Portland Symphony.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Steve Olson of San Jose, Calif., and Nick Olson of Walla Walla; three daughters, Gayle Fristad of Redmond, Carla Cady and Jole Ruff, both of Seabeck; sons-in-law, Ralph Fristad, Alan Cady and Peter Ruff; and seven grandchildren.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Dr. Meili's life at the home of Peter and Jole Ruff, 12522 Seabeck Highway on March 3 from 2 to 5 p.m.

Stephen Schleter
Former Bremerton resident Stephen R. Schleter, 83, of Granite Falls died Jan. 15, 2002, of Alzheimer's disease in Everett.
He was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Zion, Ill., to Emil and Edna (McGee) Schleter. He graduated from high school in Zion in 1936 and from the University of Wisconsin School of Engineering in 1949.
He married
Elsie C. Maciukiewicz on Aug. 26, 1955, in Bremerton.
Mr. Schleter served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945, achieving the rank of second lieutenant.
Following his military career, he worked as a civil engineer with the U.S. government for 30 years, retiring in 1978.
Mr. Schleter enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had been a member of the Bremerton Ski Cruisers and the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include his wife and two sisters, Ruth Dunnick of Beloit, Wis., and Ellen Buntrock and her husband Paul of Bristol, Wis. He was preceded in death by a brother, Everett Schleter, and a sister, Irene Hanni, both of Zion.
A funeral service was held Jan. 21 in Everett.
Mr. Schleter was buried at Evergreen cemetery in Everett with full military honors. Arrangements were under the direction of Evergreen Funeral Home.

Kenneth Thomas
Kenneth Lee Thomas, 73, of Bremerton died Jan. 28, 2002, from complications of diabetes and a stroke at Harrison Hospital.
He was born July 19, 1928, in Yuba City, Calif., to Wallace and Gladys Thomas.
He had attended high school in Nevada City, Calif.
He married
Ruby Elaine Figueroa in November 1943 in Reno, Nev.
Mr. Thomas served in the Coast Guard from 1943 to 1944, achieving the rank of seaman first class.
Following his military career, he worked as a rigger at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Shop 72.
He retired in 1985 as a supervisor after 32 years.
Mr. Thomas enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Douglas Allen of Vancouver, Wash.; two daughters, Barbara Cox of Castro Valley, Calif., and Gloria of Seattle; a sister, Patricia Hull of Arizona; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace Edwin Thomas.
No services are planned.
Anthony Holler
Anthony Wayne Holler, 46, of Port Orchard died Feb. 5, 2002, in Tacoma.
He was born April 29, 1955, in Newport, R.I., to Walter and Dorothy (Pahr) Holler Sr. He attended South Kitsap High School, graduating from West High School in Bremerton in 1973 and from the University of Maryland in 1987.
Mr. Holler served in the Navy from 1973 to 1983, achieving the rank of petty officer first class. He had worked with the federal government as a maintenance electrician for 11 years.
He married
Nina Ramirez on July 10, 1982, in Honolulu.
Mr. Holler enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his daughters.
Survivors include his wife; his mother; his father, now of Port Orchard; two daughters, San Terra and San Tisha, both of Port Orchard; and a sister, Donnalee Austin and her husband, David, of Port Orchard.
A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Ralph Crouse
Ralph Crouse, 77, of Olalla died Feb. 4, 2002, at Tacoma General Hospital.
He was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Mapleton, Maine, to Barry and Viola (Esterbrook) Crouse. He attended South Kitsap High School.
He married
Bernice Fagerud on May 29, 1947, in Tacoma.
Mr. Crouse served with the Merchant Marines during World War II from 1944 to 1947.
He later was a heavy equipment operator with Spadoni Brothers in Gig Harbor for 25 years, retiring in 1986.
He had been a member of Operating Engineers Union Local 302.
Mr. Crouse enjoyed gardening, traveling, fishing, boating and hunting.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Don of Purdy and Larry of Lakebay; a daughter, Marlene Locke of Olalla; two grandchildren, Darren Winslow and Sheila Laflamme; four great-grandchildren, Shelby, Clarissa, Christopher and Jean Paul Laflamme; two step-grandchildren, Ken Locke and Raeanne Mainous; and four step-great-grandchildren, Alex and Kelsey Locke and Keith and Kyle Mainous.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fraola cemetery in Olalla.

Nick Rudman
Nick A. Rudman, 87, of Bremerton died Jan. 29, 2002, of congestive heart failure at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Aug. 6, 1914, in Gary, Ind., to Anton and Anna Rudman. He attended high school in Gary.
He married
Valerie M. Hays on May 29, 1954.
Mr. Rudman owned and operated Junction Equipment at Kitsap Lake for 42 years.
Previously, he had been a private contractor.
He enjoyed spending time with his dog, Radar.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert A. of Port Orchard and John of Bremerton; a daughter, Rhonda Lee of Poulsbo; two stepsons, Roger Hays of Kennewick and Richard Hays of Camas; and a sister, Rose Cunningham of Sodona, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joe and Bob.
No services are planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Kitsap Cremation & Burial Society.
Arthur Ricke
Arthur August Ricke, 83, of Silverdale died Feb. 3, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born July 18, 1918, in New York City to Otto August and Helena Beatrice (Wisncska) Ricke. He graduated from high school in Bronx, N.Y., and from the University of California in Riverside, Calif., in 1957.
He married
Leone E. Sprague on Oct. 22, 1944, in Riverside. She died in 1993.
Mr. Ricke served in the Army from 1940 to 1946, achieving the rank of technical sergeant. He later worked for Del Monte Foods Hawaiian Punch Division as a quality control manager until his retirement.
He loved music and played many musical instruments proficiently.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Poulsbo.
Survivors include a son, Raymond A., and his wife, Rose, of Big Bear Lake, Calif.; a daughter, Marilynne A. Jackman of Poulsbo; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edwin.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church in Poulsbo. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 16 at Forest Lawn cemetery in Long Beach, Calif. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.

Roland Sampson
Roland Frank Sampson, 93, of Port Orchard died Jan. 24, 2002, of congestive heart failure at his home.
He was born Oct. 26, 1908, in Yakima to Owen and Mammie (Gibson) Sampson.
He married
Helen M. Smith on Jan. 26, 1933, in Yakima. She died in 1993.
Mr. Sampson was a shipfitter at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 25 years, retiring in 1968.
He enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include three sons, Raymond D. and Jay D., both of Port Orchard, and Seth O. of Burien; three daughters, Carol Hiett of Ranburne, Ala., Gail Coleman of Port Orchard and Ruth Roppe of Dayton, Ohio; two brothers, Bill of Spokane and Larry of Rochester; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Don.

Betts Harris
Betty A. "Betts" Harris, 67, of Port Orchard died of cancer Feb. 5, 2002, at her home.
She was born Oct. 23, 1934, in Yatesboro, Pa., to John and Wilda (Hollis) Harris. She graduated in 1952 from Palmer High School in Palmer, Alaska.
She was a homemaker. She loved her family and was known for her hospitality. She was a member of Calvary Chapel in Port Orchard.
Survivors include a son, Jim Scott of Port Orchard; three daughters, Lana Combs and Glenda Scott, both of Port Orchard, and Wendy White of Anchorage, Alaska; a brother, Donald; three sisters, Marilyn Ehmann of Colorado, Donna Magnussen of Vermont and Wilda Boggs of Alaska; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
