Zephaniah Farmer
Zephaniah Josiah Farmer, 26, of Belfair died Dec. 22, 1998.
He was born April 26, 1972, in Bremerton to Deanna Mae Farmer. He was raised and educated in Bremerton, graduating from West Bremerton High School in 1989. He also attended vocational school and Olympic College.
He had worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a computer draftsman.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Deanna and Warren H. Nelson of Port Orchard; his father, Huey Puryear of Bremerton; and three sisters, Athena Farmer of Bremerton, Topaz Cardwell of Belfair and Selina Cox of Maryland.
At the family's request, there will be no services.
Cremation at Cherry Grove Memorial Park.
Arrangements are by Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Leonard Ejdys
Leonard E. Ejdys, 74, of Silverdale died Dec. 23, 1998, at Bremerton Convalescent Center, from lung cancer.
He was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Ben Salem, Penn., to Anthony and Eleanor (Mazucowski) Ejdys.
Mr. Ejdys served in the Navy. He worked for Protection Service Inc. for 37 years, retiring in 1989.
Survivors include a son, George Post of Silverdale; a brother, Chester; a sister, Jean Lambert, Easton, Penn.; three grandchildren, David Post of Centerville, Mass., and Erin and Ruth Post, both of Silverdale; and two great-grandchildren.
Private services will be conducted.
Arrangements are by Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Kitsap County.
Naomi Downard
Naomi Jeanne Downard, 69, of Bremerton died Dec. 19, 1998, at Bremerton Convalescent Center.
She was born June 28, 1929, in Bremerton. She graduated from Bremerton High School in 1947.
Mrs. Downard worked with Photo Lab in Bremerton for 12 years and as a clerk with Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Central Files.
Survivors include her husband, Dorin; three daughters, Lynn Travis and Cynthia Schaum, both of Bremerton, and Jackie Dershem of Rathdrum, Idaho; two stepsons, Dale of Bremerton and Bill of Costa Mesa, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Penny Lent of Puyallup and Sherry Hastings of Olalla; two brothers, Bill Benskin of Port Orchard and Bud Benskin of El Dorado Springs, Mo.; three sisters, Evelyn Barker of Colville, Anita Buchanan of Port Orchard and Dorothy Anderson of Bremerton; four grandchildren, Jason and Aaron Vertefeuille, Ami Jefferson, and Courtney Schaum; and 14 stepgrandchildren, Daniel and Thomas Downard, Jody and Roby Lent, Annika, Timothy, Julianna and Natasja Downard, David John, Emily, Elisa, Anna, Katie and Bonnie Hastings.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, George Mantz Schaum Jr., on Feb. 27, 1983; one son, Larry Schaum; one stepson, Timothy; two brothers, George and Clarence Benskin; two sisters, Nellie Danielson and Ida Mae Benskin; and one grandson, Todd Turner.
Services were conducted Dec. 22.
Arrangements were under the direction of Tuell-McKee Funeral Services.
Roy Smith
Roy Anthony Smith, 44, of Poulsbo died Dec. 19, 1998, in Bremerton.
He was born Oct. 14, 1954, in Anchorage, Alaska. He was raised in Riverside, Calif.
On Oct. 14, 1997, he married
Michele D. Faulkner in Poulsbo.
Mr. Smith served in the Navy for 13 years. He worked for the Boxlight Corp. as a wholesale representative for five years.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Britney of Poulsbo, Jessica of Seattle and Dawn of Hansville; a sister, Debra Kaichuck of Anchorage, Alaska; and two grandchildren, Austin Schultz of Bremerton and Abbey Leibold of Hansville.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Dec. 26 at Christ Memorial Church, Eighth and Hostmark, Poulsbo.
Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, "The Stone Chapel."

Ruth Black
Ruth Elna Black, 70, of Bremerton died Dec. 20, 1998, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born April 23, 1928, in Geneva, Ohio, to Ferdinand and Lydia (Grapetin) Lynn. She was raised in Cleveland, graduating from St. Johns High School. She later graduated from Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing as an RN.
She was a registered nurse for 32 years, retiring in 1981.
She was a member of the South Park Assembly in Port Orchard.
Survivors include a son, Dennis of Wadsworth, Ohio; three daughters, Colleen Fowler and Renee Taylor, both of Belfair and Marlene of Broadview Heights, Ohio; and nine grandchildren, Aaron and Benjamin Fowler, both of Seattle, Nicole Fowler of Anderson, Ind., and Rachel, Naomi, Matthew, Jacob, Daniel and Samuel Taylor, all of Belfair. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward, Arthur and Harold; and a former husband, Louis Black.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 24 at Rill Chapel, with a graveside service at 2 p.m. Dec. 24 at Sunset Lane cemetery.

Mortimer Clement Jr.
Mortimer Taliaferro Clement Jr., 81, of Bremerton died Dec. 14, 1998, at his home.
He was born May 15, 1917, in Florence, S.C., to Mortimer and Emma (Mc Cown) Clement. He was raised in San Pedro, Calif., graduating from San Pedro High School in 1935.
Mr. Clement served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945 as a bomber pilot. He worked with the Teamsters Union in Alaska on the pipeline and as a bush pilot in Alaska. He founded KBIG radio station in Bremerton. He retired in 1983.
Survivors include a daughter, J. Christine Leffert of Ellensberg; four sisters, Lucia Clement and Carolyn Ball, both of Alexandria, Va., Sarah Johnson of Paoli, Penn., and Frances McConnell of Keyport; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Mortimer III, in 1951.
A memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 29 at the Keyport Bible Church. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 2 at Mount Hope cemetery in Florence, S.C.

Laurence Mansfield
Laurence John Mansfield, 80, of Bremerton died Dec. 17, 1998, at Forest Ridge Convalescent Center.
He was born April 19, 1918, in Tiger to James and Rubie (Wooding) Mansfield. He was raised in Spokane, graduating from Central Valley High School in 1937. Following the war, he attended Whitworth College in Spokane, graduating in 1947.
In June of 1948, he married
Marjorie J. Mansfield. She preceded him in death in 1995.
Mr. Mansfield served in the Army as a corpsman in Europe during World War II. He moved to Bremerton in 1949, working for the Kitsap County Health Department and Harrison Hospital as a bacteriologist. He retired in the mid-1980s.
He was an active member of the Lincoln Avenue Bible Church as an elder and head of the Transportation Committee. He taught Sunday school and was involved with the Mission Committee. He also assisted the Olympic College Mountaineering Class.
Survivors include four sons, Michael, Rodney and Stanley, all of Bremerton, and Daniel of Belfair; a brother, August of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Doris Wilson of Painted Post, N.Y.; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Wallace, in 1978.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Dec. 28 at the Lincoln Avenue Bible Church. A private interment will be at Ivy Green cemetery.

James Johnston
James Franklin Johnston, 74, of Bremerton died Dec. 19, 1998, at his home.
He was born Dec. 17, 1924, in Ketchikan, Alaska, to Leslie and Nina Mae (Loveland) Johnston. He graduated from high school in Fairfield, Va. He later attended pre-optometry classes at San Diego State University and the Chicago College of Optometry, graduating in 1951.
On June 6, 1948, he married
Ione Langer in San Diego.
Mr. Johnston served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1954, after attending college, he joined the Navy as a doctor of optometry, serving a tour in Vietnam, and retired in 1975. He then worked at Group Health for 10 years, retiring in 1992.
He was a member of the Elks in Bremerton, a member of the Albahr Masonic Lodge and a life member of the VFW post No. 1774, both in San Diego.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, James of Overland Park, Kan., David of San Diego, Jeffery of Auburn and Russell of Redmond; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Jan 2 at the Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church. Inurnment will be at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 30 at Tahoma National cemetery.

Howard Haven
Howard L. "Hob" Haven, 93, of Bremerton died Dec. 18, 1998, of natural causes.
He was born Dec. 12, 1905, in Chelsea, Mich. He was raised in Bremerton.
In 1947, he married
Anne Hartman in Bremerton. She preceded him in death in 1991.
Mr. Haven served in the Army from 1942 to 1945 with the Alaska Communications Service, retiring as a corporal. He worked as superintendent of mails with the Bremerton branch of the Post Office, retiring after more than 30 years.
He was a founding and life member of the Bremerton Yacht Club, serving as its second Commodore in 1930, a member of the Past Commodores Association and a 70-year member of the Charleston Masonic Lodge No. 269.
Survivors include a son, Dennis of Bremerton; two grandchildren, Edythann Sims of New York and Vickie Koonce of Georgia; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Gary.
At his request, no service will be conducted.
