Milly Verna
Amalia Pieranna "Milly" Verna, 93, of Bremerton died Jan. 3, 2002, in Bremerton.
She was born May 3, 1908, in Moncalieri, Turin, Italy, to Ramano and Corrina (Baiotti) Pastorelli. She was raised in Italy where she studied languages, music and theater. She came to the United States through Ellis Island in June 1926.
She married
Antonio Verna in Seattle. He preceded her in death in 1963.
She worked for a variety of employers in service fields.
She was awarded the Seattle Times Citizen of the Year Award in 1977. She enjoyed knitting and taking care of the less fortunate.
She was a Catholic.
Survivors include two sons, George LaFountaine of San Clemente, Calif., and Robert L. LaFountaine of Bremerton; two daughters, Deede Schattenkerk of Belfair and Nina McGuinness of Seattle; a brother, Eugene Allamano of Sequim; a sister, Caroline "Kie" Allamano of Seattle; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Marilouise Dillingham in October.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Lewis Funeral Chapel, followed with a rosary. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Calvary cemetery, 5041 35th Ave. NE, Seattle, WA 98105.

Jean Slattery
Jean H. Slattery, 75, of Poulsbo died of cancer Jan. 1, 2002, at her home.
She was born May 14, 1926, in New York to John and Beatrice (Murch) Prata.
She married
Edward F. Slattery 57 years ago in New York.
Mrs. Slattery participated in Friends of the Poulsbo Library and Fishline in Poulsbo. She was a member of St. Olaf's Catholic Church in Poulsbo, where she was also active in St. Catherine's Society.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Edward Jr. of Quebec, Canada, John of Bainbridge Island and Robert of Poulsbo; a daughter, Kathleen Slattery-McClendon of Bainbridge Island; three brothers, John Prata of Hudson, N.Y., Ralph Prata of Claverack, N.Y., and Robert Prata of Aberdeen, N.J.; a sister, Nancy Graham of East Patchogue, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Gloria Faeth, Bette Tramontine and Rita Prata.
A Mass was celebrated Monday at St. Olaf's Catholic Church.

Erma Brown
Erma Lucille Brown, 84, of Bremerton died of natural causes Dec. 31, 2001, in Bremerton.
She was born April 4, 1917, in Bird City, Kan., to Morris Raymond and Bertha Eloise (Dorland) Shahan. She graduated in 1935 from Sherman Community High School in Goodland, Kan., and in 1962 from Long Beach City College in Long Beach, Calif.
She married
William Allen Brown on Feb. 19, 1938, in Oberlin, Kan. He preceded her in death in 1974.
She was an accountant and a homemaker.
Mrs. Brown enjoyed knitting and crocheting afghans for friends and relatives.
She was a Methodist.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Dale Gillespie of Bremerton; her granddaughter, Natalie Johnson of Elkgrove, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Hannah Johnson; She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Alva Virgil Shahan and Harold Melbourne Shahan.
Interment will be at Forestlawn Memorial Park in Cypress, Calif.
Prudy McPeek
Prudence Alber "Prudy" McPeek, 86, of Silverdale died Dec. 27, 2001, at her home.
She was born Aug. 7, 1915, in Cambridge, Mass., to Theodore and Lavina (Smith) Alber. She graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School in 1933.
She married
Charles Chadwick McPeek on Sept. 30, 1944, in Malden, Mass. He preceded her in death in 1978.
Mrs. McPeek had worked as a secretary at Malibu Presbyterian Church in Malibu, Calif., for 18 years, retiring in 1983.
She enjoyed being involved in the life of her only grandchild, Chad McPeek Halligan. She was also an active volunteer in her church, Central Kitsap Presbyterian.
Survivors include one daughter, Pamela Alber McPeek of Silverdale; a half-sister, Charlotte Alber Price of Katonak, N.Y.; and her grandson, Chad McPeek Halligan. She also was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Alber Martin of Arlington, Mass., and by her brother, Walter Herman Alber of Northampton, Mass.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church, 9300 Nels Nelson Road NW in Bremerton.

Glenn Svac
Glenn Svac, 77, of Port Orchard died Jan. 3, 2002, of cancer at his home.
He was born Feb. 24, 1924, in Minneapolis to Andrew and Elizabeth (Dvorak) Svac.
He attended Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis and graduated in 1942.
He was a member of the Air Force for four years.
Mr. Svac married
Alice Jedlicka on April 17, 1948, in Clarissa, Minn.
He was a deputy director of purchasing at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and retired in 1976.
He enjoyed photography and his family. He was Lutheran.
Mr. Svac is survived by his wife; son Chuck and his wife Lorraine in Olalla; daughter Mary and her husband Phil Schroeder in Tacoma; brother Vernon in St. Paul, Minn.; two sisters, Ann Mellgren and Elsie Hardin both in Minneapolis; six grandchildren, Aaron, Alison, Nicole, Randall, Paul and Maureen.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, Andrew, George and John.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Haven of Rest.
Arrangements are under the direction of Rill Chapel.

Evelyn Willson
Evelyn S. Willson, 86, of Port Orchard died Dec. 26, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born March 25, 1915, in Portland, Ore., to John and Mina (Rude) Stavney. She graduated in 1932 from Ballard High School and in 1936 from Seattle Pacific College.
She married
Charles Woodrow Willson on June 29, 1940, in Seattle. He preceded her in death in 2001.
A homemaker, Mrs. Willson had taught with the school district in Rochester.
She enjoyed teaching children in Sunday school and gardening. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, John of Whidbey Island and Jerry and Ron, both of Port Orchard; one daughter, Karen Rowe of Port Orchard; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Walt, Lute and Gay Stavney, and two sisters, Val Loberg and Dagna Wilkie.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Bible Church in Port Orchard with interment at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard. Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Ruth Trainer
Ruth Evelyn Trainer, 76, of Poulsbo died Dec. 21, 2001, of Alzheimer's disease at Martha & Mary Health Center in Poulsbo.
She was born April 17, 1925, in Washington, D.C., to Benjamin and Nellie Harlan. She graduated from high school in Silver Spring, Md., in 1942 and attended Foothill Community College in Mountain View, Calif., for two years.
She married
Robert F. Trainer on Feb. 2, 1946, in Silver Spring.
During the last years of World War II, Mrs. Trainer worked as a secretary with the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Silver Spring.
She enjoyed her family, pottery-making and outdoor activities, particularly hiking. She was a member of the Kitsap Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Bremerton.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Robert Trainer Jr. of Poulsbo and Philip Trainer of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; two daughters, Joan Trainer of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Nancy Putman of Cottage Grove, Ore.; two sisters, Betty Rice of Gaithersburg, Md., and Mildred Barrows of Wilmington, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Jan. 13 at the Kitsap Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4418 Perry Ave. NE, in East Bremerton.

Judith Barrett
Judith Ann Barrett, 62, of Bremerton died of lung cancer Dec. 25, 2001, in Bremerton.
She was born Aug. 23, 1939, in Lodi, Calif., to Verne and Bertha Nichols. She graduated in 1957 from Chandler High School in Lodi.
She enjoyed spending time in her yard planting flowers.
Survivors include her mother, Bertha Davis of Sulphur Springs, Ariz.; two sons, David Barrett of Roseville, Calif., and Richard Barrett of Indianapolis; two daughters, Carol Renken and Jennifer Noland, both of Bremerton; a brother, Verne Nichols of Bremerton; two sisters, Jackie Lance and Sheri Davis; and five grandchildren.
Services are private.
Jeremy Dirks
Jeremy Edward Dirks, 26, of Port Orchard died Jan. 2, 2002, in Port Orchard.
He was born Jan. 30, 1975, in Truckee, Calif., to Don and Barbara (Query) Dirks. He graduated in 1995 from South Kitsap High School.
He attended St. John's Episcopal Church in Gig Harbor.
Survivors include his mother, Barbara Dirks-Peterson of Port Orchard; his father, Don Dirks of Sandpoint, Idaho; a brother, Ryan Dirks of Pullman; and his grandparents, Ray and Mary Dirks of Newport, Wash., and Verdene Query of Port Orchard.

Geneva Jewett
Geneva P. Jewett, 83, of Berkshire Center, Vt., died Dec. 30, 2001, at Northwest Medical Center in St. Albans, Vt.
She was born Dec. 3, 1918, in Belvidere Center, Vt., to Elliah and Katie (Eldred) Johnson.
She married
Arlin Jewett in 1943 at their home in Berkshire, Vt.
Mrs. Jewett was a homemaker and farmer. She retired from farming in 1979.
She was a member of Berkshire Congregation Church and the Dorcas Society.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Linda Foster and her husband, James, of Poulsbo and Marilyn Gelinas and her husband, Ed, of Grand Isle, Vt.; two sons, Richard and his wife, Audrey, of St. Albans, and James and his wife, Theresa, of Jay, Vt.; one brother, Willard Johnson of St. Albans; two sisters, Millie Sumner of Richford, Vt., and Shelba Austin of St. Albans; and 10 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace "Pete" Johnson and two sisters, Blanche "Anna Jean" Mitchell and Bertha Longley.
A funeral service was held Wednesday at Berkshire Congregation Church. Interment
was at the Berkshire cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls, Vt.
