Mable G. Burke
Former Bremerton and Seabeck resident Mable G. Burke, 89, of Silverdale died Dec. 31, 2001, at her home in Crista Shores.
She was born Nov. 27, 1912, in Edmonton, Canada, to Bertram and Margaret (Graham) Middleton. She was a 1930 graduate of Port Angeles High School.
She married
Ben Burke on July 6, 1932, in Port Angeles after which they moved to Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1977.
Mrs. Burke was primarily a homemaker. She also had worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1963.
She was a longtime member of Charleston Baptist Church and Summit Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir and played in the bell choir.
Mrs. Burke enjoyed the outdoors, music, needlework, reading and ballet. In recent years, she participated in a book club, a Wednesday Study Group at St. Antony's Episcopal Church in Silverdale and in the Seabeck Community Club. She also volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul.
Survivors include one son, Ben, and his wife, Lowell, of Martinez, Calif.; two daughters, Jean Slonecker and her husband, John, of Ukiah, Calif., and Janice Marchbanks and her husband, Dave Morse, of Bellingham; two sisters, Irene Lawson of Jesup, Ga., and Winnie Gastfield of Anchorage, Alaska; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her grandniece and caregiver, Margi Garland. She also was preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn McLean.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Crista Shores, 1600 Crista Shores Lane in Silverdale.

Evelyn Willson
Evelyn S. Willson, 86, of Port Orchard died Dec. 26, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born March 25, 1915, in Portland, Ore., to John and Mina (Rude) Willson. She graduated in 1932 from Ballard High School and in 1936 from Seattle Pacific College.
She married
Charles Woodrow Willson on June 29, 1940, in Seattle. He preceded her in death in 2001.
A homemaker, Mrs. Willson had taught with the school district in Rochester.
She enjoyed teaching children in Sunday school and gardening. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, John of Whidbey Island and Jerry and Ron, both of Port Orchard; one daughter, Karen Rowe of Port Orchard; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Walt, Lute and Gay Stavney, and two sisters, Val Loberg and Dagna Wilkie.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Bible Church in Port Orchard with interment at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard. Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Thelma McCarahan
Thelma E. McCarahan, 85, of Bremerton died Jan. 2, 2002, at Forest Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Oct. 26, 1916, in Irondale to William and Ethel (Hackett) Barrows. She attended Port Townsend High School.
She married
Donald Wyman in March 1956 in Bellevue. He preceded her in death in 1975.
She married
Mark McCarahan in April 1980 in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Mrs. McCarahan was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Janice Best and her husband, Roger, of Hope, Idaho, and Sharon McAffee and her husband, Ron, of Port Orchard; a brother, Donald Barrows of Port Townsend; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, William, Gene and Arthur Barrows.
No service is planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Alex Sakai
Alex Andrew Sakai, the infant son of Sean and Sandi (Parker) Sakai of Port Orchard, was stillborn Dec. 28, 2001, at Harrison Hospital-Silverdale.
He is survived by his parents; his paternal grandparents, Mark and Sue Sakai of Port Orchard; and his maternal grandparents, Freddy and Marty Parker of Port Orchard.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
John Blees
John Blees, 91, of Bremerton died Jan. 2, 2002, of heart failure at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Dec. 22, 1910, in Jet, Okla., to Peter and Rachel (Dillon) Blees. He graduated from high school in Gifford, Arkansas.
Mr. Blees worked as a pipefitter in government service for 35 years, retiring from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include his former wife, Berniece Blees of Bremerton; three sons, John Schur of Bothell, Richard Blees of Port Orchard and James Schur of Alaska; three daughters, Geraldine Voller of Maple Valley, Donna Lopez of Poulsbo and Betty Wattam of Bremerton; a stepson, Robert Retzloff of Bremerton; a stepdaughter, Sharon Ring of Port Orchard; three brothers, Albert Blees of Oklahoma and Floyd and Carl Blees, both of Malvern, Ark.; two sisters, Annie Tulley and Ethel Robinson, both of Malvern; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Ann, three brothers, Peter, Matthew and Isaac, and two sisters, Mary and Ethel.
A graveside service is at 11 a.m. today at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Mabel Larsen
Mabel Neil Larsen, 78, of Port Orchard died Jan. 1, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Aug. 22, 1923, in Walthill, Neb., to James and Nellie (McQueen) Neil. She graduated from Walthill High School in 1941 and from Capitol Beauty School in Omaha, Neb., in 1946.
She served in the Marine Corps from 1944 to 1945, achieving private first class. She was awarded the Honorable Service lapel button.
She married
Harold Kenneth Larsen on Feb. 15, 1947, in Omaha. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Mrs. Larsen had worked as a caregiver with the Utah State Training School for 11 years, retiring in 1977.
She enjoyed square dancing and sewing. She was baptized in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1954.
Survivors include three sons, Larry of Federal Way, Kenneth Lee and Chris Neil, both of Port Orchard, and Harold Keith of Scofield, Utah; one daughter, Joyce Kay Fox of Port Orchard; one brother, John Neil of Elkton, S.D.; three sisters, Pat Kruger, Joanne Martin and Elamae Victor, all of Nebraska; 16 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, Steven Roy.
A memorial service is at 2 p.m. today at Washington Veterans Home in Retsil.
Jean Slattery
Jean H. Slattery, 75, of Poulsbo died of cancer Jan. 1, 2002, at her home.
She was born May 14, 1926, in New York to John and Beatrice (Murch) Prata.
She married
Edward F. Slattery 57 years ago in New York.
Mrs. Slattery participated in Friends of the Poulsbo Library and Fishline in Poulsbo. She belonged to St. Olaf's Catholic Church in Poulsbo where she was active in St. Catherine's Society.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Edward Jr. of Quebec, Canada, of Bainbridge Island and Robert of Poulsbo; a daughter, Kathleen Slattery-McClendon of Bainbridge Island; three brothers, John of Hudson, N.Y., Ralph of Claverack, N.Y. and Robert of Aberdeen, N.J.; one sister, Nancy Graham of East Patchogue, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Gloria Faeth, Bette Tramontine and Rita Prata.
A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Olaf's Catholic Church. A Mass will be celebrated at noon on Monday, also at St. Olaf's.

Ozzie Osborn
Keith "Ozzie" Osborn, 81, of Bremerton died Jan. 3, 2002, at Bremerton Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born July 1, 1920, in Bryant. He graduated in 1939 from Arlington High School.
He married
Joyce Ambrose on June 20, 1940, in Arlington.
Mr. Osborn worked with Darigold in Bremerton for 40 years, retiring in 1982.
He enjoyed trout and salmon fishing, and gardening.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Rick of Bremerton; one brother, Kenneth of Everett; two grandchildren, Vickilynn Hosmer of Silverdale and Marty Osborn of Sumner; and three great-grandchildren, Brittney and Alexandra Osborn, both of Puyallup, and Donovan Hosmer of Silverdale. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sylvia Miller and a brother, Murel.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Mae Richardson
Maryadelle "Mae" Richardson, 104, of Bremerton died Dec. 30, 2001, of a stroke at Forest Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Jan. 9, 1897, at the family homestead in north central Montana, to Frank and Caroline (Thomas) Delorme. She attended the Haskell Indian Boarding School in Lawrence, Kan.
She was a seamstress and hair salon owner.
She enjoyed salmon fishing and sewing. She was a Catholic.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Curley Rohr; her second husband, Hal Richardson; and four brothers, Charles, Frank, Roger and James Delorme.
Private services are planned. Memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul or the Salvation Army.
Margaret Scully
Margaret Susan Scully, 84, of Port Orchard died Dec. 30, 2001, at her home.
She was born June 1, 1917, in Double Springs, Ala., to William and Mary (Downs) Marable.
She married
Francis Gerald Scully in January 1941 in Staten Island, N.Y. He preceded her in death in 1989.
She graduated from Double Springs High School and received a nursing degree from Peninsula College in Port Angeles.
She was a beautician in Traverse City, Mich., and was a licensed practical nurse at Olympic Memorial Hospital and at Tacoma General Hospital. She retired in 1983.
She was active in a Port Orchard senior citizens group and enjoyed quilting.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia M. Sawyer of Milford, Mich., and Margaret Pennington of Fresno, Calif.; two brothers, Ellis Marable of Knoxville, Tenn., and Leon Marable of Indiana; one sister, Nell Marable of Knoxville; and four grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters, and a grandson, William Jasen Koepke, in 1990.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service today at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Bill Bissell
A musical tribute to the late Bill Bissell, the former West Bremerton High School music director who went on to achieve fame as the University of Washington marching band director, will be Saturday in Seattle.
The tribute, featuring current and former members of the Husky band, will start at 3 p.m. at the Hec Ed Pavilion at Bank of America Arena.
Bissell, a Bremerton resident from 1956 to 1974, died in his sleep Dec. 19 at the age of 70.
He, along with former UW yell leader Robb Weller, is credited with introducing "The Wave" to college football.
