William Fantz
William F. Fantz, 66, of Bremerton died Dec. 21, 2001 in Bremerton of a heart attack.
He was born Jan. 9, 1935 in Bremerton to William G. and Clara E. Fantz.
He graduated from Highline High School in Burien in 1955.
He joined the Air Force on Nov. 18, 1952 and attained the rank of airman second class before he left on Feb. 14, 1957. He was awarded the National Defense and good conduct medals.
He was a crane operator at Naval Submarine Base Bangor for 16 years before retiring in 1991.
Mr. Fantz married M. Earlene Barker on July 9, 1983 in Tacoma.
He enjoyed bowling and his cocker spaniel Ellie.
Mr. Fantz is survived by his wife; sons Gerald and family of Bremerton, Billy of Port Orchard and Rob Blowers of Blaine; daughters Tammy Fuentes and her husband in Silverdale, Vickie Norskog and her husband in Billings, Mont. and Debi Case and husband in Gig Harbor; brother Alan and his wife in Port Orchard; sister Esther Kirk and husband in Shelton; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation is planned for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Miller Woodlawn Chapel. A funeral service will follow.
Memorial donations can be made with the American Heart Association.

William Fantz
William F. Fantz, 66, of Bremerton died of a heart attack Dec. 21, 2001, in Bremerton.
He was born Jan. 9, 1935, in Bremerton to William G. and Clara E. Fantz. He graduated from Highline High School in Burien in 1955.
He served in the Air Force from November 1952 to February 1957, achieving the rank of airman second class. He was awarded the National Defense and Good Conduct medals.
Mr. Fantz had worked as a crane operator at the Naval Submarine Base at Bangor for 16 years, retiring in 1991.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service today at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Interment will be at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Gloria Baker
Gloria A. Baker, 69, of Gig Harbor died Dec. 22, 2001, in Tacoma.
She was born Oct. 4, 1932, in Iowa City, Iowa, to William and Grace (Meyer) Finney. She graduated in 1950 from Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor.
She was the office manager with an accounting firm for 25 years until her retirement.
Survivors include a son, Bret Baker of Gig Harbor; two daughters, Joni Baker of Seattle and Marci Baker of New York; three brothers, Keith and Doug Finney, both of Tacoma and Chad Miller of Gig Harbor; and a sister, Carol Andersen of Bremerton.
A private family service is planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Haven of Rest in Gig Harbor.
Memorial donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 370, Dallas, TX.

Garth Nelson
Garth William Nelson, 48, of Port Ludlow died Dec. 19, 2001, in Seattle.
He was born Aug. 2, 1953, in Pasadena, Calif., to Elbert W. and Mary N. (Hughes) Nelson. He graduated from Paradise Valley High School in Phoenix, Ariz., in 1971.
Mr. Nelson worked as a machinist at The Boeing Co. He enjoyed boating and fishing.
Survivors include his mother, of Port Ludlow; a brother, Paul A. Nelson of Tacoma; and a sister, Margaret E. Nelson of Seattle.
A service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove.

David Scarborough
David D. Scarborough, 67, of Port Orchard died Dec. 23, 2001, at his home.
He was born May 17, 1934, in Alleene, Ark., to Charles and Flossie (Fitzgibbons) Scarborough. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Daily City, Calif., in 1952.
He married Carole L. Cooper on May 22, 1953, in Daily City.
Mr. Scarborough had worked as a tool and die maker for 37 years, retiring in 1995.
He was a member of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Survivors include his wife; a son, David C. Scarborough of Port Orchard; two daughters, Robin Alexander of Port Orchard and Nancy Garcia of Oakley, Calif.; two brothers, Charles Scarborough of Reno, Nev., and Denzel Scarborough of Richmond, Calif.; a sister, Maxine Rhodes of Ashdown, Ark.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Carol Walthall
Carol Jean Walthall, 55, died Dec. 12, 2001, at her Bremerton residence.
She was born Dec. 15, 1945, in Bremerton to Lawrence and Dorothy (Valley) White. She attended North Mason High School in Belfair.
She had worked for Evergreen Harvester and attended Charleston Baptist Church in Bremerton.
She is survived by her companion, Allen Woodworth of Bremerton; a son, Steven Walthall of Allyn; and a sister, Diane Sawyer of Port Orchard.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Charleston Baptist Church, 1302 N. Lafayette. Inurnment will be at Forest Lawn cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel with cremation at Cherry Grove Crematory in Poulsbo.

Ida Van Natta
Ida A. Van Natta, 82, of Bremerton died of cancer Dec. 19, 2001, in Tacoma.
She was born March 30, 1919, in Orrin, N.D., to Mr. and Mrs. John Hagel.
In 1937, she married William A. Van Natta in Orrin. He preceded her in death in 1984.
She was Catholic.
Survivors include two daughters, Florence Berry of Silverdale and Jill Liebel of Graham; four brothers, Fred Hagel of Redmond and Pius, Florian and Ray Hagel, all of North Dakota; two sisters, Theresa Hendrickson of Cashmere and Irene Fiest of North Dakota; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Vernon Van Natta.
Interment will take place at 2 p.m. Friday at Abbey View cemetery in Briar. A Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday at Holy Disciples Catholic Church in Puyallup. Arrangements are under the direction of Wiggen and Sons in Ballard.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Kenneth Thayer
Kenneth A. Thayer, 78, of Silverdale died Dec. 23, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Oct. 3, 1923, in Elma to Harry and Lillian (Kimball) Thayer. He graduated from Union High School in Port Washington Bay, Wash.
Mr. Thayer served in the Army from 1943 to 1945, achieving the rank of private first class and participating in campaigns in The Ardennes in Northern France and Central Europe. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the European African Campaign Medal.
He later worked in mechanical repair for many years, retiring in 1988.
Mr. Thayer enjoyed camping and fishing.
Survivors include his companion of 12 years, Frances Meredith of Silverdale; three sons, Derrille Thayer and his wife, Dorothy, of Bremerton, Jay Stauss and his wife, Lynn, of Tucson, Ariz., and Pat West of Port Orchard; a sister, Evelyn Lawson of Bremerton; a nephew, John Stauss of Silverdale; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Helen West.
A funeral service is planned for 2:30 p.m. Friday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. Interment icon will be at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.

Jim Lemon Sr.
James Arthur "Jim" Lemon Sr., 56, of Port Orchard died Dec. 19, 2001, at his home.
He was born Nov. 18, 1945, in Detroit Lakes, Minn., to Charles and Alvina (Solum) Lemon. He graduated from South Kitsap High School.
Mr. Lemon served in the Navy as an airman aboard USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He owned Jim Lemon Doors in Port Orchard for more than 30 years and he enjoyed serving his customers.
Mr. Lemon was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his companion of 15 years, Karen Phillips of Port Orchard; his parents, of Port Orchard; four sons, James Lemon Jr. and Marty Lemon, both of Port Orchard, and Jody and Corey Lemon, both of Bremerton; two daughters, Rhonda Lemon of Port Orchard and Kristina Lemon of Tacoma; two brothers, Wilbur Lemon of Port Orchard and Ervin Lemon of Seattle; two sisters, Lois Lemon and Linda Smith, both of Port Orchard; and five grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Friday also at Rill Chapel. Interment icon will be at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.

George Ford Jr.
Former Port Orchard resident George William Ford Jr., 73, died of complications from diabetes Dec. 14, 2001, in Seattle.
He was born Feb. 1, 1928, in Seattle to James and Ethel (Chew) Eng. He graduated from high school in Seattle.
He and his wife, Dee Ford, were married in Seattle.
Mr. Ford was a merchant seaman during World War II. He later worked for 35 years as a chef and restaurant manager.
He enjoyed oil painting, reading, cooking, fishing and Boston "Bull" Terriers. He was also involved in martial arts, teaching judo and aikido.
He is survived by his wife, of Seattle; six sons, Mike and Kirk, both of Port Orchard, James of Great Falls, Mont., and Dennis, Dale and Calvin; two daughters, Lydia of Tukwila and Marsha of Seabeck; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many members of his extended family.
A memorial service is planned for noon Saturday at Hilltop House, 1005 Terrace St., Seattle.

Ben Bendixen
Melvin "Ben" A. Bendixen, 71, died of cancer Nov. 28, 2001, at his Bremerton residence.
He was born Dec. 30, 1929, in Tilden, Neb., to Matthias and Anna (Sternberg) Bendixen. He graduated from Battle Creek High School in Tilden.
He married Francis Sanchez on Sept. 9, 1950, in Vallejo, Calif. She resides in Bremerton.
He served in the Navy 20 years achieving the rank of chief petty officer, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Following his Navy career, he was a lab technologist and worked for three years at Naval Hospital, 15 years at the Bremerton Clinic and five years at Group Health.
He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Fleet Reserve and Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, camping and hunting.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Richard of Redmond, William of Belfair and Michael of Purcell, Okla.; a daughter, Marie Everett of Poulsbo; three brothers, Carl Bendixen of Norfolk, Neb., Arnold Schultz of Omaha, Neb., and Gerald Bendixen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sisters, Laverne Roghair of Pierre, S.D., and Geraldine Ott of Tekamah, Neb.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert.
A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
