Clifford Schultz
Clifford J. Schultz, 91, died Nov. 26, 2001, at his Bremerton residence.
He was born Oct. 19, 1910, in Ryder, N.D., to Otto and Mary (Bauer) Schultz. He attended Bremerton High School, graduating in 1929.
He married
Mildred McCann on Jan. 21, 1933, in Bremerton. She continues to reside in the Wildcat Lake area.
He owned and operated The Bootery Shoe Store on Callow Ave. from 1941 to 1972.
He was a member of De Molay Legion of Honor and the Bremerton Elks. He enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting.
Survivors include his wife; one son, John of Bremerton; one daughter, Carol Schultz of Bremerton; and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Joel Schultz.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Clara Hoyt, in 1991.
Mr. Schultz requested no services be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Ben Bendixen
Melvin "Ben" A. Bendixen, 71, died of cancer Nov. 28, 2001, at his Bremerton residence.
He was born Dec. 30, 1929, in Tilden, Neb., to Matthias and Anna (Sternberg) Bendixen. He graduated from Battle Creek High School in Tilden.
He married
Francis Sanchez on Sept. 9, 1950, in Vallejo, Calif. She resides in Bremerton.
He served in the Navy 20 years achieving the rank of chief petty officer, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Following his Navy career, he was a lab technologist and worked for three years at Naval Hospital, 15 years at the Bremerton Clinic and five years at Group Health.
He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Fleet Reserve and Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, camping and hunting.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Richard of Redmond, William of Belfair and Michael of Purcell, Okla.; a daughter, Marie Everett of Poulsbo; three brothers, Carl Bendixen of Norfolk, Neb., Arnold Schultz of Omaha, Neb., and Gerald Bendixen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sisters, Laverne Roghair of Pierre, S.D., and Geraldine Ott of Tekamah, Neb.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert.
A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Dennis Lantrip
Dennis A. Lantrip, 88, of Bremerton, died Nov. 26, 2001, at an adult home in Bremerton.
He was born on March 10, 1913, in Houlka, Miss., to David and Cora (Cullums) Lantrip.
He married
Lillian Maisterek on April 26, 1954, at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. She died in 1994.
He served in the Navy from 1935 to 1943 and was a pump operator at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for many years.
He enjoyed taking rides in his car and watching sports on TV.
Survivors include a son, Dennis "Lanny" of Bremerton; a daughter, Jo Brott of Silverdale; a brother, Roscoe of Texarkana, Ark.; a sister, Sibyl Cates of Fouke, Ark.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Geneva Herring; and a brother, Brooks.
An entombment service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Miller-Woodlawn Mausoleum. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Red Southerland
Cornish Clersey "Red" Southerland, 81, of Bremerton died Nov. 29, 2001, of cancer at his home.
He was born Feb. 5, 1920, in Hamilton County, Texas, to Zachary and Vera (McAnnelly) Southerland. He grew up in Hamilton County.
He married
Louise Keesee on Jan. 1, 1943, in Camp White, Ore.
Mr. Southerland served in the Army from 1939 until his retirement in 1959, achieving the rank of chief warrant officer. He was one of the last horse soldiers, serving in the 1st Cavalry at Fort Ringold in Texas.
He also served under General George Patton in Germany. He saw duty in Pusan, Korea, and became an Army recruiter in Bremerton.
Mr. Southerland was the civil service examiner with the city of Bremerton for 20 years. He retired from that position in 1979.
He was active in the Bremerton community as a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Scottish Rite, the Shriners, First United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge 103. He was recently honored as a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge 103.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Pamela Kees of West Middlesex, Penn., Linda Verbon of Las Vegas and Lorna Crawford and Kathryn, both of Bremerton; one sister, Martha Steinhebel of Oklahoma City, Okla.; six grandchildren, Cheryl Gabaldon of Albuquerque, N.M., Shannon and John Crawford, both of Bremerton, Peter and Jeff Kees, both of West Middlesex, and Linda Ulizio of Ambridge, Pa.; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 9 at First United Methodist Church in Bremerton.

James Anderson
James Edward Anderson, 65, of Bremerton died Nov. 21, 2001, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Nov. 6, 1936, in St. Thomas, N.D., to Oscar and C. Flora (Asgrimson) Anderson. He graduated in 1954 from Fort Vancouver High School in Vancouver, Wash, in 1958 from Clark Community College and in 1960 from the University of Washington.
He was a pharmacist.
Survivors include two sons, Richard of Poulsbo and Jeff of Bremerton; a daughter, Patti Larson of Port Angeles; a sister Flora Fanning, of Marysville; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Myrall Anderson.
Private services are planned.
Lloyd Sayer
Lloyd George Sayer, 71, of Bremerton died of cancer Feb. 26, 2002 at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center.
He was born Sept. 25, 1930, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Lloyd K. and Celia P. Sayer. He became a Bremerton resident in 1942, and graduated from Bremerton High School in 1948.
He attended Olympic College and graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1958 with a bachelor of arts degree in education. He earned a master's degree in 1969 from the University of Puget Sound.
Mr. Sayer served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He later became an educator in Bremerton, teaching for 11 years and serving as an elementary school principal for 21 years.
He worked at Smith, Navy Yard City and Olympic View elementary schools. He retired in 1991.
Mr. Sayer was active in coaching PeeWee football in Bremerton from 1946 to 1949 and from 1958 to 1974. He coached Babe Ruth baseball in 1960 and from 1974 to 1976.
He was an avid golfer and enjoyed various modes of travel and RVing. He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife, Betty (Thornbrue) Sayer; three sons, Lloyd R. of Bellevue, Samuel of Chisholm, Minn., and Rick Thornbrue of Shelton; four daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Larson of Port Orchard, Jeanne Conover of Redmond, Gail Sayer of Kent and Terri Schaaf of Bremerton; three sisters, Joyce M. Simpson and her husband James of Seattle, Mildred J. Oster of Shoreline and Carol N. Zach of Poulsbo; and 14 grandchildren.
Visitation is at 2 p.m. Friday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.

Vincent Gallagher
Former Bremerton resident Vincent B. Gallagher, 74, of Sun City, Calif., died of respiratory failure Feb. 18, 2002, at Loma Linda Medical Center in Loma Linda, Calif.
He had lived in Bremerton for 47 years.
He was born Sept. 16, 1927 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Vincent and Mary Gallagher.
He married
Fern M. Baack on July 17, 1951, in Sparta, Wis.
Mr. Gallagher served in the Army from 1950 to 1952, achieving the rank of sergeant.
He later worked as a pipe coverer and insulator at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 15 years until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife and three sisters, Liz Baldschun of Sun City, Mary Nanfito of Olalla and Jona D. Diblasi of Council Bluffs.
Services are private. His ashes will be scattered at sea. Arrangements are by Miller-Jones Mortuary in Sun City.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association.
John Kintz
John Joseph Kintz, 60, of Port Orchard died of colon cancer Feb. 21, 2002, at his home.
He was born Feb. 25, 1941, in Valton, Wis., to Paul and Ruby (Mortimer) Kintz. He graduated from Webb High School in Reedsburg in 1959.
He married
Betty A. Schuette on Oct. 6, 1962.
Mr. Kintz was a certified orthotist/prosthetist and practiced in both California and Washington state. He also taught orthotics and prosthetics at Foot Hill Junior College in California.
He was instrumental in forming the Washington State Orthotic Prosthetic Association. He was active in the Kitsap Crohn's Association Support Group and the Luther Center for Learning.
Mr. Kintz enjoyed blacksmithing and metal art. Other interests included operating big equipment, traveling, fishing, investing and entrepreneurship.
Survivors include his wife; his parents, Paul and Ruby Kintz of LaValle, Wis.; a son, Scott, of Mountlake Terrace; a daughter, Karen Jorgenson of Boulder City, Nev.; a brother, Ralph. of San Marcos, Calif.; two sisters, Jan Wegenke of Horseshoe Bend, Alaska, and Nancy Claff of Glendale, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Sunday at Spirit of Life Lutheran Church in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society.

Gladys Odden
Gladys Loretta Odden, 84, of Silverdale died Feb. 26, 2002, in Bremerton.
She was born Oct. 8, 1917, in Keyport to the pioneer family of Lewis and Anne (Vagness) Watland, the youngest of 12 children. She graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1936.
She married
Clarence Dahl in 1941 in Bremerton. They were later divorced.
She married
Paul Odden in 1951 in Poulsbo. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Odden had worked as a governess and a nurse's aide in Seattle.
Survivors include her former husband and companion, Clarence Dahl; a son, Paul Odden Jr. of Las Vegas; a daughter, Sherry Marti of Baytown, Texas; a brother, Alf Watland of Poulsbo; five grandchildren, Lori Godwin, Todd Marti, Debra Perras, Leslie McMillan and Jessica Odden; and six great-grandchildren, Jordyn Godwin, Nicholas and Michael Perras, Clara and Madeline Marti and Jamie Lynn McMillan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Florence O'Leary
Former Poulsbo resident Florence E. O'Leary, 83, of Shoreline died Feb. 19, 2002, in Seattle of pneumonia.
She was born Aug. 21, 1918, in Canby, Ore., to Arndt and Mary (Bjornaabak) Boe. She graduated from Canby Union High School in 1936.
She married
Howard O'Leary. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. O'Leary was active at the Senior Center in Poulsbo and enjoyed collecting teddy bears. She was a member of Liberty Bay Presbyterian Church in Poulsbo.
Survivors include a brother, Clarence Boe and his wife Helena of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Esther Solberg of Ferndale; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert O'Leary; a sister, Ruth Soden; and two brothers, Albert and Leonard Boe.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Saturday at Liberty Bay Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
