Dennis Vondersmith
Dennis Dean Vondersmith, 41, of Bremerton died Feb. 25, 2002, at Hood Canal Nursery in Port Gamble.
He was born June 9, 1960, in Ketchikan, Alaska, to Douglas and Yvonne Vondersmith. He graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1979 and from Clover Park Vocational School in Tacoma.
He married
Vanessa Ives on June 12, 1994, in Poulsbo.
Mr. Vondersmith had worked at Hood Canal Nursery for the past 18 years. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; his father of Poulsbo; his mother of Tacoma; three brothers, Donald Vondersmith and his wife Mary of Dublin, Ohio, Danny Vondersmith and his wife Ruth of Silverdale and Randy Bowman and his wife Marie of Tacoma; two sisters, Lynn Buchanan and her husband Mike of Gladstone, Ore., and Lori Hinz of Kingston; and his grandmother, Mildred Borst of Tacoma.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Shirley Lent
Memorial services for Bremerton entertainer Shirley J. Lent will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Admiral Theatre. Local musicians will perform in her honor.
Lent, 68, played piano and sang in nightclubs and hotels across the Pacific Northwest and Canada for 50 years She died Feb. 16 at Harrison Hospital of pneumonia after a yearlong battle with cancer.
Thomas Burns
Thomas R. Burns, 68, of Port Orchard died Feb. 24, 2002, at his home of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease).
He was born May 25, 1933, in Eau Claire, Wis., to Felix P. and Ruth (Brazeau) Burns. His mother died when he was 6 and he was raised by his father and stepmother, Edith.
Mr. Burns graduated from high school in Eau Claire. He continued his education after serving in the Army, attending the University of Wisconsin and graduating from the University of Washington in Seattle.
His service in the Army extended from 1950 to 1953 and included the Korean War. He achieved the rank of sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Mr. Burns later became a deputy sheriff reservist in Kitsap County; a telecommunications employee at the Naval Submarine Base at Bangor and in Japan; and a computer software engineer with Andrulis Computers Inc. and Bobcat Computers Inc.
He was a member of Disabled American Veterans in Bremerton and the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, all in Port Orchard. He was also a member of the Catholic church.
Mr. Burns enjoyed fishing and boating.
Survivors include his wife; his stepmother, Edith Burns of Duluth, Minn.; two sons, Christopher of Spokane and Barry of Bellingham; two daughters, Becky Quetschke of Albany, Ore., and Merry Stever of Port Orchard; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father and two brothers, Chuck and William Burns.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard. Interment
will be at St. Patrick's cemetery in Eau Claire. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Gerald Leach
Gerald R. Leach, 79, of Bremerton died of cancer Feb. 23, 2002, in Bremerton.
He was born Jan. 24, 1923, in O'Neill, Neb., to Enard and Lucy (Hazen) Leach. He graduated from O'Neill High School.
Mr. Leach served in the Army from 1943 to 1946. He later worked as a truck driver until his retirement.
He enjoyed golf and fishing. He was a member of the Methodist church.
Survivors include a brother, Marvin Leach of Bremerton. He was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur H. Leach.
At the family's request, no services will be held. Cremation is under the direction of The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove.
John Harris Sr.
John Newhall Harris Sr., 79, of Bainbridge Island died Feb. 13, 2002, on Bainbridge Island.
He was born April 26, 1922, in Amherst, Mass., to Roy Dudley and Evelyn (Newhall) Harris. He graduated from Greenfield High School in Greenfield, Mass., in 1940 and later attended Boston University.
He married
Mary Skinner on Dec. 22, 1945.
Mr. Harris served as a B-17 pilot in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945 during World War II with the 348th Bombardment Squadron, 99th Bomb Group, achieving the rank of first lieutenant. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Certificate of Valor in Aerial Combat.
Following his military service, he worked as regional sales manager with Strawthmore Paper Co. in Westfield, Mass., and as chief executive officer of Beavers Paper Co. in Houston, Texas.
Mr. Harris was an Eagle Scout. He enjoyed working with youth programs and tutoring at Woodward Middle School on Bainbridge Island. He was a member of the Congregational church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, John Newhall Harris Jr. of Powder Springs, Ga.; a daughter, Susan Elizabeth Harris Roberds of Bainbridge Island; two brothers, James S. Harris and Charles E. Harris, both of Greenfield; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, William B. Harris.
Private services were held at his home on Feb. 17. Memorial donations may be made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
Harold Hoak
Former Port Orchard resident Harold Walker Hoak, 90, of Moses Lake died of coronary artery disease Feb. 21, 2002, at his winter residence in Desert Hot Springs, Calif.
He was born July 29, 1911, in Attica, Kan., to Harry W. and Jennie (Coe) Hoak.
He married
Rosemary Parkhurst on Oct. 17, 1980, in Moses Lake.
Mr. Hoak had a 77-year career as a farmer, retiring in 1992. For 25 of those years, he worked the Holman Homestead in South Kitsap County.
He enjoyed gardening and growing flowers.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert Hoak of Kennewick; two daughters, Carolyn Winter of Moses Lake and Gladys Alfano of Spokane; a stepson, Gene Troy of Afton, Wyo.; a stepdaughter, Kay Friedman of Tacoma; two sisters, Helen Wilson of Escondido, Calif., and Gladys Ingram of Fallbrook, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carrie Hoak, in 1979 and by a son, Howard Hoak, in 1993.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. today at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A graveside service follows at 2 p.m. at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Missionary Church in Moses Lake. Local arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Ethel Cohen
Ethel Eda Cohen, 101, of Bremerton died Feb. 22, 2002, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center in Bremerton.
She was born Feb. 16, 1901, in San Francisco to Mark L. and Sarah (Jacobs) Brilliant. She graduated from San Francisco's Commerce High School in 1918.
She married
Nathan J. Cohen on Oct. 10, 1920, in San Francisco. He died in 1977.
Mrs. Cohen had worked as a bookkeeper for N.J. Cohen Plumbing Co. in San Francisco for 20 years.
She was active in the American Legion and was a member of Congregation of Beth Hatikvah.
Survivors include three daughters, Mirian Larson of Bremerton, Pauline Wade of Brentwood, Calif., and Barbara Wagner of Borrego Springs, Calif.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Inurnment will be at Salem Memorial Park in Colma, Calif. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Alvin Wilcox
Alvin M. Wilcox, 82, of Port Orchard died of lung cancer Feb. 24, 2002, at Bremerton Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born June 7, 1919, in Peshastin, Wash., to Mearl E. and Jewel (Stewart) Wilcox. He graduated from Peshastin High School in 1937.
Mr. Wilcox served in the Army from 1937 to 1939 and from 1943 to 1946. He achieved the rank of technical sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart.
He later worked as a railroad engineer for the federal government at the Naval Submarine Base at Bangor until his retirement.
Mr. Wilcox enjoyed sports.
Survivors include a nephew, Dennis Wilcox of Port Angeles; and a niece, Carolyn Simon of Montebello, Calif.
A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. The service will conclude with a committal service at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Cyril Jones
Cyril H. Jones, 88, of Bremerton died Feb. 22, 2002, in Poulsbo.
He was born April 26, 1913, in Tauton, England.
Arrangements are under the direction of The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove in Poulsbo.
Jessie Jones
Jessie June Jones, 80, of Poulsbo died Feb. 23, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born May 30, 1921, in Humboldt, Iowa, to Albert and Hazel Grace Wheat. She graduated from high school in Humboldt and received her nurse's training at Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago in 1942.
She served more than two years as an Army nurse in the European Theater during World War II, achieving the rank of lieutenant. Following the war, she worked as an airline stewardess for United Airlines.
She later practiced nursing in Iowa, Seattle and Bremerton. Her last job as a registered nurse was with Harrison Hospital from 1971, retiring in 1978.
She enjoyed photography and gardening. She was a member of Silverdale Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Diane Jones of Hansville and Patti Cockfield of Okanogan, and one granddaughter, Melissa Cockfield of Okanogan. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Wheat of Olympia and by her former husband, Roy Jones, in 2001. Her sister, Mary Sandilands of Australia, died Monday.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Silverdale Lutheran Church.

Robert Ainsworth
Robert Badger Ainsworth, 99, of Bainbridge Island died Feb. 23, 2002, at Martha & Mary Health Center in Poulsbo.
He was born Dec. 13, 1902, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to George and Frances (Badger) Ainsworth. He graduated in 1920 from Turtle Creek High School in Turtle Creek, Pa., and attended the University of Pittsburgh.
He married
Louise Witzeman in Pittsburgh in 1934. She preceded him in death in 1997.
Mr. Ainsworth was a draftsman with Westinghouse Air Brake for 45 years, retiring in 1967.
He enjoyed painting and playing the violin. He was a Catholic.
Survivors include a son, Robert George of Madison, Wis.; a daughter, Patricia Ainsworth Tarner of Poulsbo; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church on Bainbridge Island. A reception follows. Cremation is under the direction of The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove in Poulsbo.
Charlotte Nutter
Charlotte I. (DeMent) Nutter, 92, of Bremerton died Feb. 23, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Jan. 9, 1910, in Kent, Okla., to Chester and May (Richeson) DeMent. She graduated from Opheim High School in Opheim, Mont.
She received her nurse's training from Glasgow Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow, Mont., and at Great Falls Hospital in Great Falls, Mont. She completed her training at Great Falls in 1932.
She married
George L. Nutter in Bremerton in 1946. He preceded her in death in 1975.
Mrs. Nutter was a member of Kitsap County Retired Teachers, American Legion Auxiliary 149 and Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a son, George A. of Quincy; a foster daughter, Sharon Hansen of Copenhagen, Denmark; a sister, Ruth Womac of Port Angeles; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2509 Perry Ave. in Bremerton.
