Joan Holfert
Former Bremerton resident Edna Joan Blaske Holfert, 58, of Corvallis, Ore., died of cancer Jan. 24, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis. She had lived in Corvallis for the past five years.
She was born Sept. 24, 1943, in Bremerton to Ed and Helen Blaske. She graduated in 1961 from East High School in Bremerton and in 1966 from Western Washington University.
She married Gale Holfert on Aug. 2, 1969, in Bremerton at Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Holfert taught many years in public schools in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. She also taught Sunday school classes.
She was active with the Association of Retarded Citizens from 1979 to 1996 when she and her family lived in Kodiak, Alaska.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Max of Corvallis; two daughters, Annie Thompson and her husband Jared of Ashland, Ore., and Jody Holfert of Albany, Ore.; a brother, Don Blaske of Monroe; and one granddaughter, Jordan Bechner of Albany. She was preceded in death by her brother, Roy Blaske, of Arizona; and her parents.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. today at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2509 Perry Ave., in Bremerton. A graveside service will follow at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park with a reception at Oyster Bay Inn on Kitsap Way in Bremerton.

William Stevens
William M. Stevens, 87, of Silverdale died of natural causes Jan. 3, 2002, in Seattle.
He was born April 22, 1914, in Tacoma to Soren and Laura (Hauge) Stevens. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma.
On March 30, 1946, he married Lorraine Hansler in Sumner.
Mr. Stevens was a machinist with Burlington and Northern Pacific railroads for 42 years, retiring in 1976.
He was a member of Fern Hill Masonic Lodge No. 80 and Scottish Rite Bodies. He attended Tracyton United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Stanley and his wife, Sandy, of Poquoson, Va., and Mark and his wife, Vicki, of Colstrip, Mont.; a daughter, Laura Brezacek and her husband, Richard, of Tracyton; a sister, Marilyn Caldwell of Grapeview; 10 grandchildren, Andy, Lauren, Gretchen, Katy and Ryan Stevens, Franci Brezacek, Amy Jackson, Pat and Tim Lannon and Kathy James; three great-grandchildren, Brent, Emily and Sydney; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Cerwenka and Phyllis Krokaa.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Gig Harbor United Methodist Church, with interment at Mountain View Funeral Home, A Memorial Park.
Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity or a charity of the donor's choice.

Edythe Sandberg
Edythe J. Sandberg, 86, of Bremerton died Jan. 31, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born April 11, 1915, in Minot, N.D., to John and Emma (Berg) Hojem.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Barney Wiggins, and her second husband, Orvo Sandberg.
She was a homemaker and a member of Sons of Norway.
She is survived by a companion, Art Aksdal of Bremerton; a son, Daniel Bruce Wiggins of Bremerton; a daughter, Patricia L. Plumb of Bremerton; a brother, Hilmer Taxdahl of Ferndale; two sisters, Alice Lambert of Bremerton and Ruth Langlois of Des Moines; four grandchildren, Kim Bushnell, Randy Plumb, Julie Norseth and Amy Norseth; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and Palmer Hojem.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rill Chapel, Pendleton Gilchrist Funeral Home. Interment icon will be at Forest Lane cemetery in Bremerton.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Ronald Ellison
Ronald A. Ellison Sr., 63, of Port Orchard died Jan. 29, 2002, at his home.
He was born July 16, 1938, in Marion, N.D., to Albert and Mildred (Hansen) Ellison. He was a 1956 graduate of Lincoln High School in Tacoma and graduated in 1978 from City University in Silverdale.
Mr. Ellison served in the Army from 1956, retiring in 1976. He served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. He achieved the rank of sergeant first class.
He later was a warehouseman at the Naval Submarine Base at Bangor for 20 years.
Mr. Ellison enjoyed bowling and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; three sons, Ronald of Port Orchard, Raymond of Belfair and Richard of Vancouver, Wash.; a daughter, Robin Kasper of Belfair; two brothers, Vernon of Yuma, Ariz., and Raymond of Unionville, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A funeral service follows at 3 p.m., also at Rill Chapel. Interment icon (without a service) will be at Twin Firs cemetery in Belfair.
Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, Kitsap Unit, P.O. Box 2383, Bremerton, WA 98310.

Elton Lindblad
Elton V. Lindblad, 75, of Bremerton died Jan. 28, 2002, at his home.
He was born April 30, 1926, in Sunnyside to Milton E. and Mary H. (Fuerst) Lindblad. He graduated in 1944 from Bremerton High School, in 1948 from Olympic College and in 1951 from the University of Washington.
He married Mildred "Millie" Anderson on Nov. 14, 1959, in Tacoma.
Mr. Lindblad served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946, achieving the rank of aviation electrician third class. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He later was a chemist at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 30 years, retiring in 1981.
Mr. Lindblad enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of Lincoln Avenue Bible Church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Paul of Bremerton; and two sisters, Alida A. Eikum and Dolores Davidson, both of Seattle.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lincoln Avenue Bible Church. Interment icon will be at Forest Lawn cemetery under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to Lincoln Avenue Bible Church, 1250 Lincoln Ave., Bremerton, WA 98337.

Edna Holfert

Aaron Lichter
Aaron T. Lichter, 29, of Bremerton died in his sleep Jan. 8, 2002, at his home. Mr. Lichter had suffered from cerebral palsy and Lennox-Gestaut seizure syndrome since birth.
He was born Oct. 12, 1972, in Winslow to Anton C. and Kathleen A. (Ligammari) Lichter. He attended schools in Bremerton, including the Holly Ridge Center, the Marion Avenue School, West Hills Elementary School and Olympic High School.
Mr. Lichter enjoyed music, especially classical, jazz and reggae. A favorite pastime was going "hiking" through the woods in his wheelchair.
He is survived by his mother; a brother, Karl A. of Snohomish; two nieces Maddy and Ava, both of Snohomish; his grandmothers, Lucille Lichter Kant of Lacey and Evelyn Ligammari of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; an uncle, Robert Lichter of Olympia; six aunts; and nine cousins.
A private celebration of his life will be held later at the family home. Cremation is under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.

Richard Cook
Former Silverdale resident Richard H. Cook, 68, died March 29, 2002, in Longview, Texas.
He was born Aug. 25, 1933, in Mexia, Texas, to Lyman Hall and Pat Cook.
Mr. Cook served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
He met Betty, his wife of 46 years, while living in London.
He worked for Geotech of Garland, Texas, and was relocated to Fairbanks, Alaska. He owned and operated Dick and Don's Texaco for 15 years, and later worked as a service manager and sales associate for Auto Service Co. in Fairbanks.
Mr. Cook enjoyed running and participated in 13 Klondike races.
He was a member of Hillcrest Assembly of God Church in Bremerton.
He is survived by his mother of Kilgore, Texas; his wife; two sisters, Patsy Weatherford of Benton, Ark., and Sherry Spurgeon of Alexander, Ark.; sons Michael Hall Cook of Fairbanks, and Samuel David and his wife Teresa of Manila, Philippines; daughters Kimentha Sue Cook of Denton, Texas, and Patsy June and her husband James Westcott of Juneau, Alaska.; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore. A service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church of Kilgore. He will be interred at the Kilgore cemetery.

Gutha Mowbray
Gutha E. Mowbray, 97, of Poulsbo died March 11, 2002, at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center on Bainbridge Island.
She was born Nov. 16, 1904, in Kentucky. She graduated from high school in Port Angeles.
She married Robert E. Mowbray in Port Angeles in 1923. He preceded her in death in 1989.
Mrs. Mowbray had been a longtime Kitsap County resident. She had worked in the toolroom at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard near the end of World War II.
She was a life member of Reliance Chapter of the Eastern Star in Bremerton.
Survivors include a daughter, Cleora Spinello and her husband, Jacob, of Moline, Ill.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Services were private.

Buford Sicks
Buford H. Sicks, 87, of South Colby died March 23, 2002, at Bremerton Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born May 21, 1914, in Browns Valley, Ind., to Austin and Nellie (Lydle) Sicks. He graduated from Waynetown High School in Waynetown, Ind.
He married Pauline Ruth Hinds on Oct. 5, 1934, in Crawfordsville, Ind. She preceded him in death in 1995.
Mr. Sicks was a postmaster with the U.S. Postal Service for 29 years, retiring in 1978.
He was a member and past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Port Orchard.
Survivors include two sons, David W. of Tonasket and Donald E. of Brookhaven, Miss.; two sisters, Helen Timmons of Darlington, Ind., and Mildred Goode of Lafayette, Ind.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Port Orchard.

Helen Hanna
Helen JoAnn Hanna, 66, of Bremerton died from complications of lymphoma March 26, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Oct. 13, 1935, in Macville, N.D., to Joseph and Olive (Decker) Lee.
She married Charles Hanna on Dec. 31, 1954, in Grand Forks, N.D. The couple raised their children on Vashon Island. Mr. Hanna died in 1986.
Mrs. Hanna had worked in credit management for more than 30 years.
She was past president of the Women's Credit Association and a longtime organist at the Vashon Lutheran Church. She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include her companion, Harold Henderson of Bremerton; a son, Robert of Bremerton; five daughters, Marilyn Bailey and Karilyn Frombach, both of Bremerton, Barbara Whitby of Gig Harbor, Bonnie Engdahl of Centralia and Patty Weatherill of Port Orchard; a brother, Raymond Lee of Seattle; a sister, Dorothy Hawkins of Fargo, N.D.; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three infant siblings, Jerome, Orland and Betty.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, also at Miller-Woodlawn, followed by a graveside service at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Memorial donations may be made to Children's Orthopedic Hospital.
