Clarence Allison
Clarence Allison, 81, of Bremerton died of pneumonia March 14, 2002, in Steilacoom.
He was born Jan. 20, 1921, in Winnemucca, Nev., to Clarence and Anita (Prouty) Allison. He graduated from Bremerton High School in 1940 and from Seattle University in 1944.
He married
Rebecca Jean Wenzl on Aug. 6, 1955. She died in 1998.
Mr. Allison was self-employed. He was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include three sons, Pat Allison of Renton, Mark Allison of Bremerton and John Allison of Port Hadlock; three daughters, Theresa Mayhew of Sandpoint, Idaho, Jane Bolima of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Cecilia Buckholz of Fort Worth, Texas; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, George Allison of Spokane.
A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ivy Green cemetery in Bremerton. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
David Meals
David Curtis Meals, 80, of Bremerton died March 10, 2002, in Bremerton.
He was born Aug. 16, 1921, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Arthur and Crystle (Curtis) Meals. He graduated from Millersburg Military Institute in Millersburg, Ky., in 1941 and attended the University of Cincinnati.
He married
Nancy Elizabeth Williams. She died in 1961.
Mr. Meals served in the Army from 1942 to 1945 as a technician (fifth grade). He was awarded the Bronze Battle Star for participation in the Battle of the Bulge.
He later worked as a machinist with Cincinnati Milacron for 34 years, retiring in 1986.
Mr. Meals was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed travel.
Survivors include two sons, William D. Meals of Bainbridge Island and Christopher M. Meals of Peoria, Ariz.; two daughters, Anne E. Musgrove of Canyon Lake, Calif., and Hilary Probst of Phoenix; a sister, Jane Vaughn of Flat Rock, N.C.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Horizon Church in Lake Elsinor, Calif.

'Speedy' Gulbranson
Irvin M. "Speedy" Gulbranson, 88, of Port Orchard died March 16, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Nov. 14, 1913, in Alexandria, Minn., to Iver and Martha (Strandvold) Gulbranson.
He married
Lavina Heath on June 2, 1943, in Port Orchard. She died in 1992.
Mr. Gulbranson worked as a rigger at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for more than 29 years, retiring in 1972.
He enjoyed deer hunting. He was a member of First Lutheran Church of Port Orchard.
Survivors include two sons, Gaylen Gulbranson and his wife Pam of Peoria, Ariz., and Orville Gulbranson and his wife Katie of Rochester, Wash.; a brother, Iver Gulbranson of Alexandria; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Visitation is scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. today at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church of Port Orchard. Interment
will be at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.

Wesley Jackson Lingo
Wesley Jackson Lingo, 64, of Poulsbo died of cancer March 15, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Nov. 4, 1937, in Tacoma to Ralph and Mary (Gourley) Lingo. He married
Sandy Stith on July 12, 1984.
Mr. Lingo served in the Air Force for nine years and retired from US West after 25 years.
He was a member of Poulsbo Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy; his father, Ralph, of Graham; three sisters, Ollie Bouer, Treva Yahne and Cheryl Warwick, all of Bonney Lake; seven children, Debi Muse of Waynesville, Mo., Kelly Chitwood of Morrisville, Mo., Brenda Thomas of San Diego, and Denis Lingo, Cindy Keithley, Kerry Choate and Tammy AnoNuevo, all of Seymour, Mo.; 25 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Lingo was preceded in death by his mother, Mary; a brother, Danny; and a sister, Sandy Fischer.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Poulsbo Church of Nazarene.
Herschel Barber
Herschel Delbert Barber, 83, of Port Orchard died March 15, 2002, in Port Orchard.
Mr. Barber was born Aug. 8, 1918, in Winnett, Mont., to Benjamin Clark and Bessie (Connoly) Barber. He married
Florence Mae Bailey on April 23, 1943, in Bremerton.
He graduated from Winnett High School in 1936 and attended welder school.
Mr. Barber served in the Navy from July 1944 to February 1946, achieving the rank of shipfitter second class. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Ribbon.
He was a foreman/welder at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring after 32 years.
Mr. Barber volunteered at the Bremerton Naval Museum and took five mile walks around Bremerton daily. He was active in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a Protestant.
He is survived by his wife of Bremerton; a daughter, Celia Kirkland and her husband, Richard, of Pottsboro, Texas; a sister, Alberta Kamsack of Great Falls, Mont.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Beerman and Ina Comstock.
Visitation will at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis Chapel in Bremerton. The graveside service begins at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Lewis Chapel, and will be followed by military honors at the gravesite in Forest Lawn cemetery in Bremerton. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home Chapel in Bremerton.

Audrey Hern
Audrey L. Hern, 75, of Bremerton died of cancer March 12, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Aug. 25, 1926, in Los Angeles. She was a 1944 graduate of Edmonds High School in Edmonds.
She married
Ray M. Hern on Nov. 17, 1943. He died in 1992.
Mrs. Hern had lived in Bremerton for approximately one year. Previously, she had resided for many years in Arlington and Mount Vernon.
She had worked at a recreation center, The Riverside Lanes, in Mount Vernon for 23 years, retiring in 2001.
Mrs. Hern was an avid bowler with an average of 157, even though she was legally blind. She was a member of the "Over the Hill Gang" bowling league at All Star Lanes in Silverdale.
She also was affiliated with the Peninsula Council Of The Blind and Guide Dogs For The Blind.
Survivors include three daughters, Andrea Crispin and Lynne Flood, both of Seabeck, and Laurie Kohnke of Centralia; five grandchildren, Dale Howell of Port Orchard, Brenda Crispin and Tawna Schwalbe, both of Everett, Dana Grant of Seattle
and Jason Grant of Ellensburg; and four great-grandchildren, Steen and Ayla Howell, both of Port Orchard, Megan Grant of Seattle and Davis Grant of Ellensburg.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kariotis Mobile Estates Community Center in East Bremerton. Her ashes will be scattered into Rosario Strait from Washington Park in Anacortes at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Nellie Ruth Leon
Former Port Orchard resident Nellie Ruth Leon, 87, of Portland, Ore., died Feb. 17, 2002, in Portland following a long illness.
She was born Oct. 20, 1914, in Woodbine, Iowa, to William and Olive (Dodge) Rodenbough.
She married
Charles Frank Leon II on April 27, 1933, in Omaha, Neb. He died in 1999.
Mrs. Leon worked in the Vancouver, Wash., shipyards during World War II. She was later employed for 10 years at the Miniature House in Portland, retiring in 1980.
She was a member of the Royal Rosarians, the Riverside Community Church in Portland and the Portland Rose Society. She had been a member of the society for more than 50 years.
Survivors include a son, Charles F. III of Portland; three daughters, Ruth Carney and Shirley Goemmel, both of Portland, and Phyllis "Polly" Nelson of Port Orchard; a sister, Edith Rodenbough LeClair of Portland; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Feb. 21 at the Rose City cemetery in Portland. Memorial donations may be made to a kidney dialysis fund of the donor's choice.
Ruth Ghrist
Mary Ruth Ghrist, 88, of Bremerton died March 12, 2002, at Port Orchard Care Center.
She was born Aug. 25, 1913, in Bellingham to Henry and Mary (Johnson) Duxbury. She graduated from Lynden High School in Lynden in 1932.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed her role as a mother.
She was an active member of the Salvation Army since 1953, working with the organization's Home League.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Murker of Spanaway and Donald Murker and Jack Ghrist, both of Port Orchard; three daughters, Nancy Moore of Port Gamble, Noragene Sutman of Port Orchard and Joy Snyder of Whitefish, Mont.; a sister, Katherine Williams of Oregon; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Murker.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Port Orchard Care Center, 2031 Pottery Ave.

Georgia McKenzie
Georgia J. McKenzie, 82, of Bremerton died March 13, 2002, in Bremerton.
She was born Feb. 4, 1920, in Bremerton to John and Lydia (Jose) Guy. She graduated from Bremerton High School in 1938.
She married
Chuck "Mac" McKenzie on March 8, 1940, in Bremerton. He died in 1997.
Mrs. McKenzie was a homemaker.
She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton and had been active in the Young Ladies' Institute at the church. She also enjoyed playing pinochle and watching TV game shows.
Survivors include five sons, Jack, Pete and Tom McKenzie, all of Bremerton, Steve McKenzie of Monroe and Bob McKenzieSullivan of Tenino; four daughters, Susan Ablao and Mary and Patricia McKenzie, all of Bremerton, and Carol Rudd of Edmonds; a brother; two sisters; 24 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Bob Iverson.
A vigil will be at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, also at the church. Inurnment will be at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.

James Johnstone
James Johnstone, 81, of Bremerton died March 13, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born March 31, 1920, in Great Falls, Mont., to William P. and Mary A. (Coleman) Johnstone. He attended high school in Great Falls.
He married
Rosemary Barrett in Great Falls in 1942. She died in 1957.
He married
Julia Mitchell in Bremerton in 1959. She died in 2000.
Mr. Johnstone served in the Navy during World War II. He later worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring as a planner-estimator in 1974.
He coached baseball at all age levels, including semi-pro, and was inducted into the Kitsap County Baseball Hall of Fame. He was also a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include two sons, William J. and his wife, Rosemary, of Bremerton and John M. and his wife, Gloria, of Chehalis; a daughter, Sharon A. Wilson and her husband, Donald, of Port Orchard; a brother, Steve of Havre, Mont.; two sisters, Kathleen Tracy of Great Falls and Gertrude Pearce of Des Moines; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Lewis Funeral Chapel, followed by a 3 p.m. graveside service with military honors at Forest Lawn cemetery.
