Betty Schryver
Betty Jean Schryver, 78, of Port Orchard died Feb. 26, 2002, at Kindred Hospital in Seattle.
She was born July 17, 1923, in Kansas City, Kan., to Harry Brinton and Margaret Carroll.
She married Robert Schryver on Dec. 19, 1942, in Seattle. Mrs. Schryver was a homemaker.
She enjoyed playing cards with her friends and doing needlework. She was a member of the Lutheran church.
Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Peggy Swanson of San Diego, Kathy Hirdler of Mount Vernon and Toni Hall of Bothell; two sisters, Jerry Elliott of Anaheim, Calif., and Connie Kneefe of Burien; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Eleanor Bloom
Eleanor I. Bloom, 87, of Bremerton died Feb. 19, 2002, at her home.
She was born Sept. 28, 1914, in International Falls, Minn., to Carl and Selma (Branlund) Hoglund. She graduated from Falls High School in International Falls in 1931.
She married William F. "Bill" Bloom and in 1951 they moved to Bremerton from Ranier, Minn. He died in 1980.
Mrs. Bloom had worked as a school secretary in Falls and as a budget analyst with Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the Naval Torpedo Station at Keyport, retiring in 1974.
She was a longtime member of the Bremerton Art Guild and served as pianist for the Senior Singers in Bremerton. She had also volunteered for 14 years with the Retired Senior Volunteers Program in Bremerton, including work with Senior Outreach Services.
Mrs. Bloom enjoyed studying the Bible and had been the organist at First Lutheran Church in Falls for several years.
Survivors include a stepson, David Bloom and his wife Laura of Ranier; a stepdaughter, Charlotte Bloom Tamburelli and her husband John of Seattle; and two cousins. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn (Hoglund) Tighe.
At her request, there will be no public services. The family is planning a celebration of her life. When plans are completed, a notice will be published in The Sun.

Eugene Stewart
Eugene "Bud" Stewart, 90, of Port Orchard died Feb. 22, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Sept. 5, 1911, in Kingman, Kan., to James and Dora Stewart.
He married Catherine Stevenson on Sept. 24, 1936, in Idaho. She died in 1992.
Mr. Stewart served in the Army National Guard from 1950 to 1959, achieving the rank of master sergeant. He also worked as a welder at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for many years, retiring in 1970.
He was active in the senior bowling league at the Hi-Joy Bowl in Port Orchard and also played poker there on Sundays. He was a member of the Kitsap Peggers Cribbage Club and enjoyed gardening, growing his own apples, grapes and tomatoes.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Anderson and Beverly Lucas, both of Port Orchard; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Buddy and Benny Stewart.
Services are private.

Frank Melker
Frank B. Melker, 74, of Bremerton died of natural causes on April 25, 2002, in his home.
He was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Bremerton to William and Alice (Mueller) Melker.
He graduated from South Kitsap High School and attended Olympic College.
Mr. Melker served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947 and achieved the rank of corporal.
He married Dorothy Higginbotham Melker in 1964 in Bremerton. She preceded him in death 1979.
He was a sheet metal worker/ planner and estimator at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 35 years. He retired in 1982.
He enjoyed Mariners baseball and gardening.
He is survived by daughter Cindy Bucknell of Brighton, Colo., stepdaughter Vicki Avery of Bremerton; step-son Terry Liebmann of Bremerton; sisters Bertha Waskey of Bremerton and Laura Murphy of Lynnwood; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, also at Lewis Funeral Chapel.
He will be inurned next to his wife Dorothy at Forest Lawn.
Memorial donations can be made to the American Heart Association, 414 Woodland Park Ave. N, Seattle, WA 98103-7499.

Virginia Kovack
Virginia M. Kovack, 83, of Belfair died April 26, 2002, in Bremerton.
She was born May 1, 1918, in Tacoma. She lived most her life in Belfair and Vaughn.
She married Charles A. Kovack of Tacoma on Nov. 20, 1938.
Mrs. Kovack enjoyed reading, gardening and travel and was active in the Rhododendron Garden Club and Belfair Fire Department Auxiliary. She was active in Belfair Community Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Deanna Dawn and husband Fred of Kent, and Karen Horton and husband Dave of Juneau, Alaska; two sons, Ken Kovack and wife Georgia of Tacoma, and Jim Kovack and wife Wendy of Allyn; a sister, Betty Matson of Belfair; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until a 10 a.m. service Tuesday at the Valley Chapel at Mountain Funeral Home in Tacoma. Arrangements are under the direction of Mountain Funeral Home.
Remembrances may be sent to Alzheimer's Association or the American Cancer Society.

Bessie Stevens
Bessie L. Stevens, 96, of Port Orchard died April 25, 2002, in Port Orchard.
She was born Feb. 26, 1906, in Holland, Ark., to Joseph and Mary (Parsons) Duran. She attended Holland High School.
She married Emsley R. Stevens on Sept. 25, 1924, in Conway, Ark. He preceded her in death in 1975.
Mrs. Stevens had been a homemaker throughout her life. She enjoyed flowers and gardening.
She was a member of Port Orchard United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Emsley Stevens of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Roderick Stevens of Roseburg, Ore.; four daughters, Mary R. Brockway of Renton, Betty Jo Grover of Silver City, N.M., Hazel A. Burgette of Davenport and Sharon L. Stevens of Federal Way; a brother, Don Duran of Mesquite, Texas; a sister, Eldeene Duran of Conway; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by two sons, Oren Lee Stevens in 1934 and Wilfred Stevens in 1936.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Port Orchard United Methodist Church, 725 Kitsap St. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Dr. Louis Braile
Dr. Louis Braile, 80, of Belfair died from complications of a stroke April 25, 2002, at Ridgemont Terrace in Port Orchard.
He was born April 11, 1922, in Denver to Frank and Marie (Trinquesse) Braile. He graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1939, from Seattle Pacific College in 1942 and from Marquette Medical School in Milwaukee in 1945.
He married Gwen Durham on June 17, 1942, in Seattle.
He served in the Army from 1946 to 1948, achieving the rank of captain. He became a family practice physician, retiring in 1996 after about 50 years.
In addition to his medical career, Dr. Braile volunteered overseas with the American Refugee Committee. Beginning in Vietnam in 1967, he served several short terms in refugee camps on the border of Thailand and Cambodia.
His final tour was in Goma, Zaire, in 1994, caring for Rwandan refugees. Many refugees and volunteers referred to him as "Papa Louis."
At home, Dr. Braile enjoyed carpentry. He also had been active in North Mason United Methodist Church in Belfair.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Dr. Larry Braile and his wife, Sheryl, of West Lafayette, Ind.; a daughter, Dr. Peggy Braile of Gig Harbor; and three grandchildren, Suzanne Schack and her husband, Scott, of Kent, Bill Braile and his wife, Margaret, of Hayward, Calif., and Tom Braile of Fairbanks, Alaska. He was preceded in death by a son, Bill Braile, and a brother, Frank Braile.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at North Mason United Methodist Church, 25140 NE State Route 3 in Belfair.
Memorial donations may be made to North Mason United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1197, Belfair, WA 98528; to the American Refugee Committee, 430 Oak Grove St., Suite 204, Minneapolis, MN 55403; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Frederick Mann
Frederick M. Mann, 88, of Port Madison on Bainbridge Island died April 21, 2002. He was an architect, planner, photographer and historic preservationist.
He was born Oct. 30, 1913, in Minneapolis, received a bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of Minnesota and a master's degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Mr. Mann was a Navy lieutenant during World War II, stationed in Brazil as chief engineer of ship repair and reservicing. After the war, he first worked for Ernest Kump in San Francisco and then opened his own architectural practice with Eugene Crawford in San Rafael, Calif.
He moved to Seattle in 1954 and worked for Richardson Associates until 1959, when he was appointed university architect for the University of Washington, serving until 1969.
Mr. Mann helped found the National Association of University Architects and was active as a consultant for city parks and governmental projects. He is remembered for his prominent role in the planting of cherry trees in the UW "Quad, " and for redesigning the grounds at Fort Lawton for public use when the land became the property of the city of Seattle and was renamed Discovery Park.
He documented the preservation of Fort Lawton's buildings. His book and talents were used to assist property owners in the Fort Ward National Historic District on Bainbridge Island, where he was active as a Bainbridge Island Historical Society trustee.
He spent hours cataloging and preserving photographs in the collection of the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum, and he advocated preserving historic buildings, archaeological sites and cultural resources of the island. Mr. Mann also served for many years on the Kitsap County Planning Commission before the island incorporated.
He is survived by his wife, Mia; his four children, Grace Smith, Mary Gregory, Frederick T. Mann and Richard Mann; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
At his request, no services will be held. Arrangements were under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.

Wally Sarama
Walter Paul "Wally " Sarama, 83, of Bremerton died April 24, 2002, at Martha & Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo.
He was born April 15, 1919, to Paul and Anastasia (Warkiewicz) Sarama in Newark, N.J., where he lived until joining the Army in 1940.
Mr. Sarama served in an infantry regiment during World War II in Europe and the Middle East, achieving the rank of sergeant. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the American Defense Service Medal.
While stationed in Algiers, North Africa, he met his future wife, Cpl. Margaret Pinsch, who was serving in the Women's Army Corps. They married in Newark in November 1945.
The couple moved to Washington, where Mr. Sarama was a tool and die maker with The Boeing Co. in Renton. He retired from Boeing in 1975 after nearly 30 years.
He spent his retirement traveling and camping throughout the United States. In Apache Junction, Ariz., he participated in Road Haven Community activities and as a parishioner of St. George's Catholic Church.
The Saramas celebrated their 50th anniversary in August 1995. Mrs. Sarama preceded her husband in death in 1999.
Survivors include a son, James Sarama of Woodinville; four sisters-in-law, Mary Bertrand and Kathleen Pinsch, both of Bremerton, and Irene Myres and Rita Martin, both of Minnesota; and a brother-in-law, Richard Pinsch of California. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley and Joseph Sarama; and three sisters, Pauline Baudet, Mary Gustave Keppler and Rose Burke.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. May 4 at 1184 NW Barker Creek Road in Bremerton. Burial will be at Our Queen of Heaven cemetery in Mesa, Ariz.

Alvin Haag
Alvin William Haag, 65, of Poulsbo died April 25, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Jan. 21, 1937, in Jackson County, Kan., to Rolland A. and Zella R. (Miller) Haag. He graduated from Granger High School in Granger.
Mr. Haag served in the Coast Guard from 1956 to 1960. He was a radioman first class.
He married Judy A. MacKinnon on May 28, 1960, in Friday Harbor.
Mr. Haag was an equipment operator for Puget Power. He also was a licensed taxidermist.
He was an Eagle Scout and had served as a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed fishing and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Mitchell A. Haag of Wasilla, Alaska; three daughters, Nancy L. Jones of Ellensburg, Barbara L. Walker and her husband, Joe, of Poulsbo and Halli J. DePhillips and her husband, Nick, of Port Orchard; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. today at The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove, 22272 Foss Road NE in Poulsbo.
