Mary Rio
Mary B. Rio, 83, of Port Orchard died Saturday, May 18, 2002, in Port Orchard.
She was born March 2, 1919, in Wailua, Hawaii, to Stephen and Proscovia (Zaloga) Bogdanoff. She attended high school in Hawaii and became a home-maker after her marriage to Santos Rio. Her husband preceded her in death.
Her main interests were her family and her church. She was a member of the Christian Life Center in Port Orchard.
Survivors include three sons, Donald P. Rio and Roy S. Rio, both of Port Orchard, and Barney Rio of Seattle; a daughter, Rita Rio of Port Orchard; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A family celebration and reunion will be scheduled later in Hawaii.

Barbara Tescher Richards
Barbara Tescher Richards, 86, of Bremerton died May 21, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Nov. 18, 1915, in Perkins County, S.D., to Roll Evert and Grace Lula (McClain) Tescher. She completed her training in nursing at Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City, Mont., in 1936.
She married
Earl E. Richards on June 9, 1939, in Deer Lodge, Mont. He died in 1982.
Mrs. Richards had worked as a registered nurse at Harrison Hospital, retiring after 35 years. She had served as head of the obstetrics department there during World War II.
She was a member of the Retired Nurses Association at Harrison Hospital and volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul. She had also been a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church for 61 years, participating in the Young Ladies Institute at the church.
Her interests included bingo and collecting antiques.
She is survived by two daughters, Valerie Barnes and her husband, Jim, of Poulsbo and Vicki Gudgeirsson and her husband, Paul, of San Clemente, Calif.; three brothers, Lee, Rolland J. and Irwin Tescher; a sister, Eula Hallman of Poulsbo; four grandchildren, Sean Corey, Shelly Fragiao, Christine McLaughlin and Kevin Gudgeirsson; and three great-grandchildren, Griffin Fragiao, Hunter McLaughlin and Thorunn McLaughlin. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Gerald, John and Jim Tescher, and by a sister, Thelma Fenelon.
A rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1516 Fifth Ave. in Bremerton, before an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial also at the church. Interment
and a graveside service follow at Forest Lawn cemetery under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Lee Hoyt Bechtel
Emilie Jeanne "Lee" Hoyt Bechtel, 79, of Bremerton died May 17, 2002, of Alzheimer's disease.
She was born Aug. 11, 1922, in Denver to Irving and Dolores (Dilwiter) Erensoft. She graduated from New Trier Township High School in Kenilworth, Ill., in 1938.
She worked as a statistician with the Navy for 28 years, retiring in 1985. She had worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for many years.
She enjoyed ballet and playing bridge. She was affiliated with the Episcopal faith.
Survivors include three sons, George E. Hoyt of California, William I. Hoyt of Mississippi and Edward T. Hoyt of Florida; a daughter, Ellen L. Johnston of Bremerton; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. in Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Chick Ireland
Helena K. "Chick" Ireland, 84, of Port Orchard died May 6, 2002, of heart failure in Port Orchard.
She was born March 18, 1918, in Vitten, Poland.
She married
Donald M. Ireland. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Ireland was a homemaker. She and her husband also had owned and operated an ambulance service in Bremerton for15 years.
She was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and had served the organization as state commander from 1978 to 1979. She had been very active with the DAV in Bremerton since the 1970s, spending hundreds of hours each year volunteering at the Washington Veterans Home at Retsil.
Mrs. Ireland was also a member of Navy Mothers and Gold Star Mothers.
Survivors include six grandchildren, Thomas C. Suss of Auke Bay, Alaska, Richard M. Suss of Federal Way, Kelly Ireland of Washington, Karen Pennock of Tucson, Ariz., Kurtis Ireland of Bremerton, Becki Dawn Dungan of Fruitland, Idaho; and nine great-grandchildren. Her son, Thomas E. Ireland, preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the DAV Hall, 2315 Burwell St. in Bremerton. Her ashes will be buried with her husband in Idaho.

Cecile Thorpe
Former Port Orchard resident Cecile E. Thorpe, 90, of Ocean Shores died May 18, 2002, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen.
She was born May 2, 1912, in Green Bay, Wis., to John Peter and Ida Marie (Derenne) Euclide. She graduated from Green Bay High School in 1929.
She completed her nurse's training at Saint Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Green Bay in 1933. She then worked as a nurse at Saint Mary's Hospital.
She married
Tillford B. Thorpe on June 20, 1934, in Green Bay. He died in 1978.
Mr. and Mrs. Thorpe had moved from Green Bay to Seattle in 1947. While in Seattle, Mrs. Thorpe participated in the Altar Society at Christ The King Catholic Church where she had been a member from 1947 to 1971.
The Thorpes sold their Seattle home in 1971, making annual trips to Quartzsite, Ariz. Mrs. Thorpe moved to Port Orchard in 1990 and to Ocean Shores in June 2001.
Survivors include two sons, Richard J. Thorpe of Edmonds and Donald J. Thorpe of Lebanon, Mo.; a daughter, M. Karen Walters of Ocean Shores; a sister, Mildred Christensen of Susanville, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, James T. Thorpe of Hornell, N.Y., in 1996.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Ocean Shores. Arrangements are under the direction of Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Kenneth Solene
Kenneth R. Solene, 66, of Belfair died May 16, 2002, at Harrison Hospital after a long battle with diabetes.
He was born March 23, 1936, in Bellingham to Albert and Evelyn (Compton) Solene. He graduated from Bellingham High School in 1954 and attended the University of Washington for two years.
Mr. Solene served in the Army in Germany for two years.
He married
Linda Baldwin on Aug. 1, 1981, in Belfair.
Mr. Solene worked as a general manager with General Electric in Seattle for more than 10 years. He later worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for more than 20 years, retiring as a planner-estimator in 1993.
He enjoyed carpentry and outdoor activities. He was a member of Belfair Assembly of God.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Eric Solene of Fall City, Wash., Carl Solene of Whidbey Island, Shane Solene of Belfair and Stephen Solene of Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Brandalynn Reidt of Port Orchard and Kandralynn Solene of the family home in Belfair; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Belfair Assembly of God. Inurnment will be at Twin Firs cemetery in Belfair. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Shirley Ann Carlson
Shirley Ann Carlson, 66, of Olalla died May 17, 2002, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma.
She was born Sept. 28, 1935, in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada, to Lawrence and Laura (Melnychuck) Kemple.
She married
James Carlson. Mrs. Carlson was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; her mother and stepfather, Laura and Hank Uhland; a son, James Carlson Jr. and his wife, Laurie; a daughter, Cheryl Filippi and her husband, Mike; a brother, Bill McDonagh; two sisters, Joyce Billingsley and her husband, Larry, and Patricia Weber; and eight grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today at Haven of Rest Funeral Home in Gig Harbor, followed by a graveside service at Haven of Rest Memorial Park in the Garden of Communion.

Laurie Storey
Laurie Alexis Storey, 52, of Purdy died May 16, 2002, at her home.
She was born May 11, 1950, in Enumclaw to August and Donna (MacKay) Opitz. She graduated from Cleveland High School in Portland, Ore., in 1968.
She had worked in retail sales and credit support for four years.
She enjoyed her grandchildren, camping and outdoor activities. She was Roman Catholic.
Survivors include her companion, Jim Wilbur of Gig Harbor; her father, August Opitz of Woodburn, Ore.; two sons, Michael Anthony Willis of Seattle and Jason Willis of Puyallup; a brother, Marvin Opitz of Woodburn; her twin sister, Patricia Hollander of Seabeck; three other sisters, Lee Bick of Gig Harbor, Diane Lung of Battle Ground and Paula Koenig of Canby, Ore.; and five grandchildren, Mark Bolster, Amber and Shawn Benedict, and Tamara and Erin Willis, all of Puyallup. She was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Gaven in 1995.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. today at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Belfair. Arrangements are under the direction fo Pendleton-Gilchrist funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Prima Isay
Prima Pamintuan Isay, 74, of Bremerton died May 14, 2002, at her home.
She was born April 16, 1928, in the Philippines to Pantalion and Greceria (Pamintuan) Isay. She graduated from high school in the Philippines.
She married
Richardo Sumanqui in 1947 in the Philippines. He preceded her in death.
While living in the Philippines, Mrs. Isay was involved in the import and export of wood products. She later worked as a teacher's aide in the United States.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton. She enjoyed dancing and bowling.
Survivors include a daughter, Magdalena S. Callao of Bremerton; a brother, Bernie Isay of the Philippine Islands; a sister, Juliana David of the Philippine Islands; and four grandchildren, Janice Lynn Craycraft of Idaho, Derrick Jay Callao of California, and Dennis Patrick Callao and Leah Marie Macahilas, both of Bremerton.
A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Friday at Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Joseph Sivard
Joseph G. Sivard, 77, of Port Orchard, died May 9, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Aug. 14, 1924, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Hazelett and Nettie Sivard.
He married
Helen R. Mullin on April 2, 1958. She preceded him in death in 1991.
Mr. Sivard served two years in the Merchant Marine. He worked for 30 years at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1982.
Survivors include a son, Joseph Sivard Jr. of Chino Valley, Ariz.; two daughters, Eileen Lukkasson of Port Orchard and Arlene Sivard of Seattle; a brother, Frank Sivard of Florida; three sisters, Peggy Persons of Plano, Ill., Delores Ackley of Oregon and Edith Kuklok of Illinois; and 10 grandchildren.
No services are planned.
Rose Strobl
Rose M. Strobl, 95, of Bainbridge Island died May 18, 2002, at Messenger House Care Center.
She was born March 8, 1907, in Chicago to Alois and Helena Stumvoll.
She married
Joseph Strobl in Chicago. He preceded her in death in 1979.
Mrs. Strobl was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and spending time with her great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Lubovich of Bainbridge Island, five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service is planned for Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 1310 Madison Ave. N., Bainbridge Island. Interment
will be at Kane cemetery on Bainbridge Island. Arrangements are under the direction of Kane Funeral Home.
