Arne Petersen
Arne Petersen, 78, of Belfair died June 3, 2002, at Port Orchard Care Center.
He was born Oct. 16, 1923, in Copenhagen, Denmark, to Hans and Elizabeth (Pehrson) Petersen.
He married
Tove Christiansen on Nov. 1, 1947, in Copenhagen.
Mr. Petersen was a journeyman upholsterer. He retired in 1987.
He was a member of the Wayfarer Masonic Lodge and the Danish Brotherhood, both in Seattle.
Survivors include two sons, Glenn Petersen of Belfair and Chris Petersen of Mountlake Terrace; a daughter, Janet Williams of Bellevue; a sister, Lilly Ludvigsen of Copenhagen; and seven grandchildren.
A private family service is planned. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Luella Rosebeary
Luella Rae Rosebeary, 75, of Poulsbo died June 5, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born June 21, 1926, in Leavenworth to Edward and Mary (Jones) Hertzog. She graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1944 and later attended nursing school.
She married
John R. Rosebeary on Nov. 21, 1964, in Spokane.
Mrs. Rosebeary was a homemaker who was devoted to her family.
She loved to fly airplanes, having obtained a single engine fixed-wing license. She also enjoyed gardening, the outdoors and horseback riding.
Survivors include her husband; five sons, Steve Stannard of Spokane, Richard Stannard of Salt Lake City, Roy and Richard Rosebeary, both of Ephrata, and John W. Rosebeary and his wife, Janet, of Poulsbo; five daughters, Joyce Ervin and her husband, Bill, of Rainier, Ore., Janet Abbot and her husband, Greg, of Logensport, Ind., Betty Abbott and her companion, Tom, of Wenatchee, Sharon Long and her husband, Tony, of Waterville and Peg Heimbecker and her husband, Dan, of Wenatchee; three brothers, Clair Hertzog and his wife, Mary, of Wenatchee, Gene Hertzog and his wife, Elizabeth, of Paris, Texas, and Gary Hertzog and his wife, Missy, of Albany, Ore.; 23 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and her caregivers, Roxanne Daquiwag and Nadine Davis. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Tyson Heimbecker, in 1987, and a sister, Pat Zodrow, in 1981.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove in Poulsbo. Inurnment will be at Cherry Grove cemetery.

Thomas Kaaukai
Thomas Donald Kaaukai, 63, of Bremerton diedMay 29, 2002, in Bremerton.
He was born Aug. 5, 1938, in Hilo, Hawaii.
He and his wife, Iolani, were married
in Hilo. She died in 2001.
Mr. Kaaukai was a member of Apostolic Life Tabernacle in Bremerton.
Survivors include a son, Derek Kaaukai of Maui, Hawaii; two daughters, Corlette Collett of Hilo and Karlene Anderson of Bremerton; a brother, Louis Kaaukai of Hilo; a sister, Nona Kekela; and eight grandchildren, Iolani, Nani, Keola, Christian Lee, Keala, Kainoa, Taylor and Caleb. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Kaaukai Jr., and a daughter, Cheryl Jean.
Viewing will be from10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. memorial service Monday at Apostolic Life Tabernacle, 1248 Ninth St. in Bremerton. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Newell Boon
Former Bremerton resident Newell Eugene Boon, 93, of Kirkland died May 31, 2002, at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue.
Mr. Boon lived in Bremerton from 1934 until 2000, when he moved to Bellevue to be with his daughter. He had lived at Lake Vue Gardens in Kirkland for the past year.
He was born Dec. 13, 1908, in Franklin, Neb., to Rodger and Elsie (Robertson) Boon. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1927.
Mr. Boon had owned and operated a plumbing and heating business.
After retiring from the business, he enjoyed fishing and golfing, spending summers in Bremerton and winters in Hemet, Calif.
He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge in Anchorage, Alaska, and the Masonic lodge in Bremerton.
Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Schwarck of Bellevue; a sister, Margaret Anderson of St. Paul, Minn.; two granddaughters, Lezlie Schwarck of Renton and Kathleen Hostak of Elk Grove, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor Marie Hostak and Collin James Baumgartner of Elk Grove. He was preceded in death by three wives.
No services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Bleitz of Bellevue.

Jon Iverson
Jon Christian Iverson, 64, of Poulsbo died June 2, 2002, at his home.
He was born July 31, 1937, in Indianapolis to Christian and Helen (Luedemann) Iverson. He grew up in Indianapolis, graduating from Shortridge High School there in 1955 and attending Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.
He married
Jean E. Endress on June 15, 1962, in Seattle.
Mr. Iverson served in the Army. He later worked as a contractor before becoming self-employed at Jean's Northend Florist and Iverson Monuments, both in Poulsbo.
He was the charter president of the North Kitsap Jaycees and the North Kitsap Evening Lions Club, participated in the Jaycees International Senatorship and serving as past president of the Sons of Norway in Poulsbo. He also was a beekeeper and a member of the West Sound Beekeepers Association.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kathryn Felix and her husband, Brian, of Silverdale and Kimberly Jo Crane and her husband, Kevin, of Bremerton; two sisters, Karen Bubenzer of Indianapolis and Elisabeth Iverson of Cummings, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove in Poulsbo with a reception following.
Charles Koon
Former Bremerton resident Charles W. Koon, 70, of Seattle died June 3, 2002, in Seattle after a short illness.
He was born Sept. 1, 1931, in Minneapolis. He graduated from Bremerton High School in 1949, from Olympic College in 1951 and from the University of Washington in 1953.
Mr. Koon was an athlete. While at OC, he was named an All-American in basketball. At the UW, he was a starting guard in 1953, when the basketball team advanced to the NCAA Final Four.
In 1956, he was named an AAU All-American and an alternate to the USA Olympic Team after the Seattle Buchan Bakers won the AAU Championship.
Mr. Koon became a teacher and coach with the Shoreline School District until his retirement.
He was devoted to his family and many friends, enjoyed gardening and remained very much involved with his alma mater. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Big W, the UW Alumni Association and the UW Hall of Fame.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Bette; three daughters, Lori Koon and her husband, Jim, Julie VanDooren and Gretchen Andreis and her husband, Chris; two brothers, Tom Koon and his wife, Mary, and Bob Reidhead and his wife, Beth; two sisters, Tracy Koon and Nanci Hill and her husband, David; and three grandchildren, Tyler, Eli and Dayna VanDooren.
Mr. Koon was a member of Richmond Beach Congregational Church, 1512 NW 195th St. in Shoreline. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the church.

Dina Leech
Dina Marie Leech, 57, of Silverdale died May 10, 2002, of a heart attack at her home.
She was born Dec. 25, 1944, in Santa Cruz, Zambales, Philippines, to Florentino and Juanita (Medul) Morados.
She married
John B. Leech on Feb. 8, 1975, in Reno, Nev.
Mrs. Leech was a homemaker for 26 years. She enjoyed bowling and crochet.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, William and Jimmy Copeland, both of Silverdale, and Danny Copeland of Yakima; two daughters, Josie Morados and Mary A. Loanzon, both of San Diego; three brothers, Honorario and Francisco Morados, both of Lucapon, Zambales, Philippines, and Salvador Morados of Masinloc, Zambales, Philippines; a sister, Flor (Morados) Echon of Santa Rosario, Zambales, Philippines; and 11 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Cecelia Ann Copeland.
Visitation was held May 13 at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Mariah Barton
USS Abraham Lincoln crew member Mariah Ann Barton, 21, of Northglenn, Colo., died May 26, 2002, at her brother's home in Silverdale.
She was born Oct. 18, 1980, in Denver. She graduated from Thornton High School in Thornton, Colo.
She was one of the Navy's few female search and rescue swimmers, specializing in anti-submarine warfare. She had achieved the rank of petty officer third class and planned to make the Navy her career.
Survivors include her parents, Lawrence and Carole Barton of Northglenn, Colo.; two brothers, Sonar Technician 2nd Class Charles Barton and his wife, Kim, of Silverdale and A.J. Barton of Northglenn; a sister, April Barton of Northglenn; her grandparents, Opal Barton of California, Cathy and Gail Pierce of Indiana and Lloyd and Marilyn Booth of Colorado; two nieces, Jordon Lee Morrison and Olivia Kate Barton, both of Silverdale; and a nephew, Elias Edward Barton of Silverdale.
A memorial service was held May 30 aboard USS Abraham Lincoln. A funeral service was held Friday at Intercession Episcopal Church in Thornton. Burial is at Fort Logan National cemetery.

Dale Dahlke
Dale M. Dahlke, 54, of Port Orchard died of mesothelioma May 30, 2002, at his home.
He was born Jan. 31, 1948, in Bremerton to Clarence and Katherine (Adacheck) Dahlke. He graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1966.
He married
Charisse E. Orona on Jan. 14, 2000.
Mr. Dahlke had served in the Army. He later worked as an electrical planner estimator at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for more than 30 years.
He enjoyed gardening, fishing and golf.
Survivors include his wife; his parents; a daughter, Meghan of Bremerton; a stepson, Matt of Bremerton; two stepdaughters, Kelli and Ashley, both of Port Orchard; five brothers, David, Merlin, Andy and Joel, all of Port Orchard, and Will of Bremerton; two sisters, Jane Raudabaugh of Bremerton and Ruth Day of Bow.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Penny Stratton Hoffman
Edith "Penny" Stratton Hoffman, 81, of Tahuya died June 2, 2002, in Bremerton.
She was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Bloomington, Pa., to Clarence and Una (Roberts) Stratton. She graduated from Spangler High School in Spangler, Pa., in 1938 and received training at the Altoona School of Nursing in Altoona, Pa.
She married
Kenneth A. Hoffman on Jan. 15, 1944.
Mrs. Hoffman served in the Navy during World War II, achieving the rank of ensign. She later worked as a registered nurse for more than 30 years, retiring in 1983.
She enjoyed square dancing.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Kenneth S. of McMinnville, Ore., and Jeffrey A. of Sarasota, Fla.; two brothers, James H. Stratton of St. Benedict, Pa., and Clair R. Stratton of Orange, Calif.; a sister, Olive M. Thompson of Allyn. She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold W. Stratton.

Joe Martin
Harold "Joe" Martin, 81, of Bremerton died of heart failure June 1, 2002, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center.
He was born Dec. 4, 1920, in Waitsburg, Wash., to Pete and Elsie (Hooker) Martin. He graduated from Bremerton High School in 1939.
He married
Arlene Dorman on March 27, 1942, in Bremerton. She preceded him in death in 1999.
Mr. Martin served in the Army from 1945 to 1946, achieving the rank of sergeant. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 35 years as a machinist and later as a supervisor in the supply department. He retired from that position in 1977.
Mr. Martin was a longtime member of the Kitsap Golf and Country Club and served as the organization's president. He had also been director of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association.
Survivors include three sons, Bill of Bremerton, Jim and his wife, Susan, of Rossmoor, Calif., and Alan and his wife, Kathy, of Olympia and Manette; a stepdaughter, Stephanie Tollan of Tacoma; a sister, Eunice Husti of Chandler, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Troy, Guy, Hilary and Wyatt Martin, all of Rossmoor; and a stepgranddaughter, Claire Tollan. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Faith Martin.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. July 5 at Forest Lawn cemetery. Inurnment will be under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
