Gene Brown
E.W. "Gene" Brown, 67, of Port Orchard died July 27, 2002, in Seattle after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He was born Sept. 18, 1934, in Nett Lake, Minn., to Stephen and Elva (Isham) Brown Sr.
Mr. Brown graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1952, later attending Olympic College and Pacific Lutheran University. He went on to receive a degree in electronic technology from DeVries College.
He married
Vera Smith on Sept. 1, 1968, in Port Orchard.
Mr. Brown served in the Navy from 1955 to 1959, achieving the rank of petty officer second class. He was awarded a National Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.
He had worked as an electronics technician with the Federal Aviation Administration for 32 years, retiring in 1990.
Mr. Brown enjoyed shuffleboard, reading and walks with his pup, Mac. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a stepson, Monty Edwin Otis of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two daughters, Pamela E. Mattingly of Rochester and Victoria Sandstrom of Port Orchard; two brothers, Ira A. Brown of Virginia, Minn., and F. George Brown of Port Orchard; a sister, Helen Bryant of Port Orchard; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. In 1989, his son and daughter, Eugene Steve Brown and Mary Susan Brown, died together in a car accident. He also was preceded in death by three brothers.
Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. today, from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Pendleton Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, also at Rill Chapel. Burial will be at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.

Elaine Hamilton
Former Bremerton resident Elaine Hamilton, 80, died of cardiac arrest July 27, 2002, in Fontana, Calif.
She was born Jan. 3, 1922, in Stanwood to Margret and Paul King. She graduated in 1939 from Bremerton High School.
She married
Earl Hamilton in 1940 in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1994.
Mrs. Hamilton was a homemaker. She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton and was active in the Young Ladies Association there. She also was a member of Take Off Pounds Sensibly.
Survivors include a son, Rick Hamilton of LaVerne, Calif.; three grandchildren, Tammy DiGiamarino, Chris Hamilton and Sean Hamilton; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
Velma Shepherd
Velma G. Shepherd, 93, of Poulsbo, formerly of Kenmore, died July 25, 2002, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
She was born July 2, 1909, in Nanton, Alberta, Canada, to John W. and Laura (Keeling) Boren. She graduated in 1927 from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane.
She married
Willis Wayne Shepherd in 1931 in Los Angeles. Mr. Shepherd preceded her in death in 1993.
Mrs. Shepherd was a homemaker. She also had worked as a dental assistant.
She was an avid golfer and had played the sport for the last time at age 90. In the 1940s, she and her husband were owners of the Bremerton Blue Jackets baseball team.
Survivors include a son, James W. Shepherd of Kingston; three grandchildren, Sherry Ljunggren of Kingston, Michelle Burlingame of Edmonds and Jani Babcock of Ephrata; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jerilee Shepherd, at age 6.
A private family graveside service will be held at Kingston cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Bleitz Funeral Home in Seattle.
Christopher R. Simmons
Christopher R. Simmons, 21, of Shelton died July 25, 2002, from injuries sustained in a Port Orchard car accident.
He was born Aug. 29, 1980, in Portland, Ore., to Darrell and Deborah (Mitchell) Simmons. He graduated in 1999 from North Mason High School and had attended Olympic College in Bremerton.
Mr. Simmons worked as a housekeeper at Alpine Way Retirement Home in Shelton.
He was a member of Spirit Force Karate DoJo in Belfair, where he was a first-degree black belt. He also enjoyed writing, poetry and drawing. He was a Christian.
Survivors include his father and his father's fiancee, Christine Read; his mother; two sisters, Virginia Ray and her husband, Charles, of Shelton and Leanna Branham and her husband, David, of Belton, Mo.; and his maternal grandfather, Ralph Mitchell of Ridgefield, Wash.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at Pendleton Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, also at Rill Chapel.
Interment will be at Twin Firs cemetery in Belfair.

Marian Phillips
Marian Genevive Phillips, 87, of Bremerton died July 28, 2002, at her home.
She was born July 16, 1915, in Bynum, Mont., to Clinton and Hildrud Stillman. She attended high school in Choteau, Mont.
She married
Leon W. Phillips on Dec. 28, 1932, in Choteau. Mrs. Phillips was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband of 69-1/2 years; five sons, Bob of Duvall, Boyd of Silverdale, Rocky and Ted, both of Bremerton, and Bill of Boring, Ore.; five daughters, Pat, Beverly, Dodie, Georgia and Linda, all of Bremerton; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
At her request, no services will be held.
A celebration of her life will be at 1 p.m. Aug. 17 at the family home.
William Stott
William H. Stott, 67, of Port Orchard died July 26, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Jan. 28, 1935, in Leominster, Mass. He graduated from St. Agatha's High School in Philadelphia in 1954 and served with the Marine Corps from 1954 to 1956.
He married
Jeanette Stott on Nov. 12, 1955, in Philadelphia.
Mr. Stott was self-employed.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bill Stott Jr. and his wife, Virginia, of Houston and Vincent Stott of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a daughter, Denice Thomas and her husband, Roger, of Port Orchard; and four grandchildren, Greg and Kelsey Thomas, both of Port Orchard, and Nicholas and Samantha Stott of Houston.
A Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. today at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 1150 Mitchell Road in Port Orchard. Burial will be at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.

Christopher R. Simmons, 21, of Shelton died July 25, 2002, at Port Orchard in auto accident.

Elizabeth Durban
Elizabeth Durban, 73, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, died July 26 at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
She was born July 10, 1929, in Hazard, Ky., to Lou Collins and Virgil (Statzer) Collins.
She married
Alvin Durban of Mount Vernon.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Alvin Jr. and his wife, Susan, of Port Orchard; two daughters, Sandra Bickel and her husband, John, of Utica, Ohio, and Shirley Jacks and her husband, Harley, of Douglasville, Ga.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Law-Baker Funeral Home in Utica, Ohio. Visitation will be an hour before services.
Ken Aase
Kenneth "Ken" Aase, 69, of Port Orchard died of cancer July 26, 2002, at his home.
He was born Nov. 16, 1932, at Thief River Falls, Minn., to Martin and Mabel (Wilson) Aase.
He graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls and served in the Navy from 1950 to 1953, achieving the rank of aviation boatswain's mate third class. He was awarded the Navy Occupation Service Medal.
He married
Alice Klopp on March 3, 1956, in Thief River Falls.
For 28 years, he worked as a millwright at Reserve Mining in Babbitt, Minn., and then became a shipfitter at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He retired in 1993.
Mr. Aase enjoyed outdoor and church activities and his family. He had been a member of First Lutheran Church in Port Orchard.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Coby of Babbitt, Minn., and Chris of Port Orchard; two daughters, Sue Dailey of Port Orchard and Cheryl Aase of Puyallup; two brothers, Clifford of Bloomington, Minn., and Leonard of Coon Rapids, Minn.; and 11 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Port Orchard.
Inurnment will be at a later date in Minnesota.
Peggy Vanden Bos
Peggy Elaine Vanden Bos, 78, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Port Orchard, died July 25, 2002, of heart problems at Morton General Hospital in Morton, Wash.
She was born July 14, 1924, in Kalispell, Mont., to Lee and Ethel Bennett. She attended schools in Somers, Mont., and graduated from Flathead County High School in Kalispell in 1942. Mrs. Vanden Bos also graduated from Olympic College's nursing program.
She married
Garrett "Van" Vanden Bos on Feb. 26, 1943.
Mrs. Vanden Bos was a nurse. She also was co-owner of Van's Credit Jewelry in Port Orchard for nearly 40 years.
Mrs. Vanden Bos enjoyed traveling in her RV. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church and had a strong Christian faith.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Jerry and his wife, Paula, of Soap Lake and Roger and his wife, Sue, of Port Orchard; one daughter, Patsy Collins and her husband, Bob, of Morton; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. today at the First Church of God in Morton. A second celebration service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at South Park Assembly of God in Port Orchard.
