Dora Lynn Rice
Former Bremerton resident Dora Lynn "DL" Rice, 69, of Gig Harbor died July 20, 2002, of cancer at her home.
She was born Jan. 8, 1933, in Bremerton to Webster and Helen (Thwaite) Taylor. She graduated from Bremerton High School in 1951 and attended the University of Washington in Seattle.
She married Sanderson "Sandy" Rice on July 5, 1953, at St. Paul?s Episcopal Church in Bremerton.
Mrs. Rice devoted her life to her family, friends and her church. She had served as secretary at St. John?s Episcopal Church in Gig Harbor for 20 years.
She was elected to the Diocesan Council of the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia in 1996. In 1980, she was awarded the Bishop?s Cross for outstanding service in the church.
Mrs. Rice had also been active with the Eastern Star, Rainbow Girls and the Tacoma Orthopedic Guild.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Steven Rice and his wife, Terri Minteer Rice, of Bremerton; two daughters, Jenny Lust and her husband, Mike, of Seattle and Janelle Costa and her husband, Ken, of Montgomery, Ala.; two sisters, Alyce Brandner and her husband, Doug, of Auburn and Susan Taylor-Greene and her husband, John, of Springfield, Ore.; a brother, John Taylor and his wife, Bonnie, of Bremerton; four grandchildren, Joseph, Anne, Claire and Ivy; and several godchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at St. John?s Episcopal Church in Gig Harbor. Arrangements are under the direction of Haven of Rest in Gig Harbor.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of DL Rice to the Dr. Penrose Orthopedic Guild, c/o Joy Rakes, Treasurer, 10722 Minterwood Drive KPN, Gig Harbor, WA 98329.

Betty Adair
Elizabeth Mae "Betty" Adair, 89, of Bremerton, formerly of Port Orchard, died July 11, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Sept. 16, 1912, in Billings, Mont., to Hugh and Mentie (Cellars) Morrow. Her father died when she was 2 months old.
She graduated from Billings High School in 1930 and from business college in Billings in 1933.
She married Roy L. Adair in 1948 in Billings. He preceded her in death in 1982.
Mrs. Adair had worked as a contract specialist in the supply department at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard until 1967, when she became director of the contract administration division of the supply department at PSNS.
She was a longtime member of Clover Valley Golf Club and the Port Orchard Eagles. She enjoyed salmon fishing, golfing, swimming, dancing and traveling.
Survivors include a nephew, Robert A. Morrow of Fremont, Calif.; four nieces, Barbara Norman of Dexter, Ore., Clarice Peters of Denver, Dona Costello of Seattle and Margie Brickley of Portland, Ore. She also was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald in 1920, R. Harry in 1971, and Warren Hugh in 1972.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Inurnment will be at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Memorial donations may be made to Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Oregon Health and Science University, 3181 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201.

Harold Shauers
Harold E. Shauers, 78, of Port Orchard died July 22, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Nov. 23, 1923, in Clam Falls, Wis., to Ellis and Tillie (Noeske) Shauers.
He married Fern Myrick on Dec. 28, 1946, in Grand Coulee.
Mr. Shauers served in the Army for four years during World War II, fighting on Omaha Beach.
He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Bronze Arrowhead.
He went on to work as a pipefitter at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 29 years until his retirement.
Mr. Shauers enjoyed trout and bass fishing and trips to Reno, Nev.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Wanda Nilsen and her husband, Paul, Laura Fitzwater and her husband, Richard, and Bonnie Benson, all of Port Orchard; two sisters, Virginia Weiler of Couer d'Alene, Idaho, and Barbara Andersen of Bremerton; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A gathering for family and friends will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Shauers' home, 1316 SE Carl Pickel Drive in Port Orchard.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Laurel Engels
Laurel Rae Engels, 70, of Bremerton died July 18, 2002, in Silverdale from complications of ovarian cancer.
She was born Aug. 30, 1931, in Denver to Ralph and Frances (Meyers) Jordan. She attended Holy Family High School and Metropolitan State College, both in Denver.
She married Forest Engels on Sept. 14, 1950, in Denver. He preceded her in death in 1990.
Mrs. Engels was a homemaker and community activist. She was a member of the Colorado Jane Jeffersons and many other civic organizations. She also was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include two sons, Forest Engels of Thornton, Colo., and Larry Engels of Henderson, Nev.; two daughters, Letitia Sullivan of North Andover, Mass., and Jennifer Didio of Bremerton; two brothers, Ralph Jordan of Denver and David Jordan of Lakewood, Colo.; a sister, Antoinette Richard of Denver; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday also at the church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Tuell-McKee of Bremerton.

Shirley Falconer
Shirley M. Falconer, 81, of Bremerton died July 5, 2002, after a long illness at Belmont Terrace Convale-scent Center in Bremerton.
She was born May 5, 1921, in Seattle to Hayden and Susan (Douglas) Grunden. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Seattle in 1939 and from real estate school in Seattle in 1975.
She married Marlton C. Falconer on Jan. 30, 1942, in Seattle.
Mrs. Falconer was a homemaker. She also had worked as a real estate agent for several years.
She enjoyed gardening, sports and creating works of art, primarily stained glass, sculpture and painting.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Rick Falconer of Woodinville; four daughters, Gloria Roof of Suquamish, Linda Falconer of Seattle, Pam Kauffman of Aurora, Ore., and Cindy Donaldson of Edmonds; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine West, and brothers, Hayden Grunden Jr. and Dale Grunden.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Indianola Community Church, Midway and Division, in Indianola.
Memorial donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309.

Lee Grant III
Earl Leewood "Lee" Grant III, 55, of Bremerton died of surgical complications July 19, 2002, in Seattle.
He was born May 26, 1947, in Seattle to Marjorieann and Earl Leewood Grant II. He graduated from Mercer Island High School in 1965 and from Bellevue Community College in 1970.
Mr. Grant served in the Army and the Navy in the 1960s. He later worked for 20 years as a restaurant owner and general contractor. He co-owned That's A Some Italian Ristorante in Poulsbo and That's A Some Pizza on Bainbridge Island.
He married Martine E. "Marti" Lawrence on Nov. 7, 1976, in Seattle.
Mr. Grant enjoyed fishing, antique collectible cars and flying. He held a private pilot's license.
Survivors include his wife; a son, William B. Lawrence-Grant of Illahee; a daughter, Valerie Grant of California; a brother, Michael A. Grant of Medford, Ore.; and one grandson, Tyler Grant. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Timothy D. Grant.
A memorial service will be at noon Sunday at the Bainbridge Commons on Bjune Drive on Bainbridge Island.
Memorial donations may be made to diabetes or cancer organizations.

Kathryn Mae Bland
Kathryn Mae Bland, 93, of Port Orchard died July 19, 2002, at Ridgemont Terrace Care Center.
She was born April 19, 1909 in Bowdle, S.D. to Clyde and Minnie (Harmer) Stuart.
She attended Olympia High School.
Mrs. Bland was married to Harmon Kelly Bland July 22, 1928 in Olympia. He preceded her in death in 1977.
She was a homemaker. She also was a member of the Pythian Sisters, Homemakers Club of Bear Creek and a charter member of the Bear Creek Community Club.
She attended Harper Evangelical Free Church in Port Orchard.
She is survived by daughters Verna Williams and her husband, Floyd, of Grapeview, Mary Washburn and her husband, Jack, and Elaine Gilbert and her husband, Robert, all of Port Orchard; four half brothers; three half sisters; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She also was preceded in death by her sister, Allene Voller.
Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Harper Evangelical Free Church at Sedgwick and Wilson Creek Road in Port Orchard.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Rhea Gerhing
Rhea Ethel Gerhing, 88, of Union died July 17, 2002, at St. Peter's Hospital in Olympia.
She was born Aug. 13, 1913, in Spokane to William Chester and Ethel May (Davies) Kirk.
She attended South Kitsap High School.
Mrs. Gerhing was married to Philip S. Gerhing Jan. 8, 1935 after eloping to a small town in Washington.
She was a homemaker, a tournament-winning golfer and enjoyed flower gardening.
She was a Catholic.
Mrs. Gerhing is survived by her husband; sons John and his wife Arlene of Union and Kirk and his wife Sonya of Mexico; daughters Nancy Blunt and husband Charlie of Bothell and Doris Dodd of Union; sister Lillian Kirk of Bremerton; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother and her son, Philip.
A private family graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today at Forest Lawn cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Dr. Ira Ainsworth Jr.
Dr. Ira Vaughn Ainsworth Jr., 84, of Poulsbo died July 19, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Sept. 14, 1917, in Fluvanna, Texas, to Ira Vaughn and Jewell (Pruitt) Ainsworth Sr. He graduated from the New York College of Dentistry in New York City in 1947 and attended Baylor University.
He served in the Marine Corps from 1939 to 1945, achieving the rank of second lieutenant.
Dr. Ainsworth practiced dentistry in El Paso, Texas, for 35 years, retiring in 1990.
He enjoyed art and painting, photography, flying, cooking and sculpture.
Survivors include a son, Franklin Ainsworth, and his wife, Sonja, both of Poulsbo; and one grandson, Ira David Ainsworth of Poulsbo.
A graveside service will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent. Inurnment is under the direction of The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove in Poulsbo.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Elsie Gray
Elsie K. Gray, 90, of Poulsbo died July 5, 2002, of Alzheimer's disease at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center on Bainbridge Island.
She was born Jan. 10, 1912, in Penawawa to Henry and Christina (Dormaier) Fromm.
She married Jerry Gray in January 1957 in Spokane. He died in 1985.
Mrs. Gray had worked as a waitress in Spokane for 36 years, retiring in 1972.
She enjoyed cooking for family and friends.
Survivors include a daughter, Arlene Rowles of Poulsbo; two sisters, Thelma Morasch of Sacramento, Calif., and Julia Anderson of Bakersfield, Calif.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Clara Weeks; a daughter, Geraldine Frederick; sisters Adeline Porter and Emma Cook; and brothers Ray and Benny Fromm.
A memorial service will be held in Spokane at a later date. Inurnment will be at Fairmount Memorial Park in Spokane. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
