Martha Schoelzel
Former Bremerton resident Martha Schoelzel, 77, of Rainier died Aug. 15, 2002, at Madigan Hospital in Tacoma of respiratory failure.
She was born Oct. 27, 1924 in Shelton to Charles and Emily (Purdy) Miller.
She attended Caemawa Indian School in Salem Ore., and later attended Lee's Beauty School in Bremerton.
She married James Schoelzel on Dec. 4, 1976 in Tacoma.
She was a member of the Skokomish Tribe and the Skokomish Shaker Church. She enjoyed travelling and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband; three sons, William Sigo III of Pendleton, Ore., David Sigo of Suquamish and Frederick Sigo; three daughters, Harriet Walkup of Minnesota, Nancy Sigo of Suquamish and Donna Sigo of Port Orchard; one brother, Samuel Miller of Hoquiam; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at McComb Funeral Home in Shelton.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Skokomish Shaker Church. She will be interred at Skokomish "Y" cemetery in Shelton.

Dixie Vanguilder
Dixie Lynn Vanguilder, 57, of Belfair died Aug. 15, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born April 29, 1945 in Seattle to Ralph and Thelma (Fairchild) Osborn.
She attended Edmonds High School.
She married John William Vanguilder on June 16, 1979, in Edmonds.
Mrs. Vanguilder was a devoted homemaker whose family came first. She enjoyed camping and the outdoors.
She attended Belfair Community Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Robert Floyd Vanguilder of Belfair; and a daughter, Cathryn Marion Vanguilder.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to a noon funeral service Wednesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel, 5503 Kitsap Way in Bremerton.
Private interment will be at Evergreen Washelli Memorial Park in Seattle.

Terry (Owen) Zimmerman
Former Allyn resident Terry (Owen) Zimmerman, 86, of Puyallup died of heart failure July 15, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup.
She was born Dec. 5, 1915, in Jefferson County.
She was retired from a career as a registered nurse. She had lived at Highland Hills in Puyallup for the past year.
She was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Puyallup and had attended Faith Lutheran Church in Shelton.
Survivors include a son, R. Jeff Owen of Tacoma; a daughter, Diane Valentine of Elma; a stepson, Drew Zimmerman of Burien; three sisters, Marguerite Brady of Anchorage, Alaska, Maxine Victor Whitnell of San Simeon, Calif., and her twin sister, Helen Flieschner of Pennsylvania; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Haven of Rest Memorial Park in Gig Harbor.

Felipe Ancheta
Felipe L. Ancheta, 92, of Port Orchard died Aug. 13, 2002, at his home.
He was born May 1, 1910, in the Philippine Islands to Santiago and Eugenia (Lopez) Ancheta.
He married Maria T. Tabafunda in 1936 in the Philippines. She preceded him in death in 1981.
Mr. Ancheta had worked in landscape maintenance for 15 years.
He also had been employed for 15 years in an Alaskan fish cannery.
He was a member of the Pacific Northwest Ilocandia Association and St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard.
Survivors include his children, Andres T. Ancheta of Belfair and Antonia A. Tabtab of Port Orchard.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday and a rosary will follow, both at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 1150 Mitchell Ave. Interment icon will be at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.

Claire Ludwick Smith
Marjorie "Claire" Ludwick Smith, 87, of Silverdale died Aug. 15, 2002, at her home.
She was born March 2, 1915, in Wellington, Kan., to Glenn and Grace (Crider) Holmes. She graduated from high school in Toledo, Wash., in 1933 and attended beauty school in Seattle.
She married Kendall "Kay" Ludwick on July 29, 1939. Mr. Ludwick preceded her in death in 1972.
She married Wayne Smith on Feb. 14, 1978, living in Shelton, Poulsbo and wintering in Arizona. The Smiths moved to Country Meadows in Silverdale in 1997.
Mrs. Ludwick Smith had worked at The Boeing Co. during World War II and for beauty salons in Seattle for many years. She retired in approximately 1970. She also had been a homemaker.
She was an avid gardener and swimmer and enjoyed baking pies for family events.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Kendall Ludwick and his wife, Nancy, of Redmond, Roy Ludwick and his wife, Peggy, of Boulder, Colo., and Douglas Smith of Washington; three daughters, Adele Bergerson and her husband, Ron, of Poulsbo, Diane Claire Kelly of Port Townsend and Jeannie Anderson of Olympia; a sister, Birdeen Gotcher of Blaine; a former daughter-in-law, Enola Ludwick, of North Bend; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Holmes of Missoula, Mont; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Gene, Duane and Ferris Holmes, and a sister, Dorothy Holmes.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. today at Suquamish Community Congregational United Church of Christ, followed by a reception.
Memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Toni Jones
Antoinette "Toni" Jones, 99, of Bremerton died of a stroke Aug. 10, 2002, in Bremerton.
She was born Oct. 29, 1902, in Gibbon, Minn. She graduated from high school in Minneapolis in 1920.
She worked for many years in the supply department at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1964.
She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Bremerton, the Bremerton Duplicate Bridge Club and Ladies of Elks. She enjoyed league bowling.
Survivors include three grandsons, Chris Knight of Stanwood and Curt and Troy Knight, both of Bremerton; a step-granddaughter, Jeri Best of Alaska; and two great-grandchildren, Josh Knight of Port Orchard and Nicole Hall of Bremerton. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clinton Knight, her second husband, Lyal Jones, and her son, Bradley Knight.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 3 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. Memorial donations may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2509 Perry Ave., Bremerton, WA. 98310.

John Lowney
John William Lowney, 50, of Bremerton died Aug. 13, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 9, 1952, in Bremerton to John and Ruth (Lee) Lowney. He graduated from West High School in Bremerton and attended Portland Community College in Portland, Ore.
Mr. Lowney worked as an auto detailer and with auto body repair and painting.
He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, camping, fishing and detailing cars.
Survivors include three daughters, Chelsea Lowney-Wells and Amanda Lowney-Wells, both of Bremerton, and Ruth E. Lowney of Vancouver, Wash.; a brother, Walter L. Holland of Bremerton; two sisters, Arlene Henderson and Margaret Lowney-Rock, both of Bremerton; and five grandchildren, Dakota, Kayla, Correna, Kiyanna and Terris.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Manette Community Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel with cremation at Cherry Grove Crematory in Poulsbo.

Margaret McPherson
Margaret Mary McPherson, 87, of Port Orchard died Aug. 13, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Dec. 25, 1914, in Exeter, Neb., to Frank and Minnie Hammond.
She married Donald McPherson on June 11, 1937, in Martin, S.D.
Mrs. McPherson was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard and the South Kitsap Artists Association. She loved her family, gardening and painting.
Survivors include her husband; six children, Dixie Fox and Genean Janaszak, both of Port Orchard, Donn McPherson of Puyallup, Ghyrn McPherson of Oakridge, Ore., Frankie Anderson of Portland, Ore., and Alice Miller of Bremerton; 22 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 1150 Mitchell Ave. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Gabriel.
Interment follows the funeral Mass at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hill's Funeral Home of Puyallup, which can be reached at (888) 838-4455.

Jessie Workman
Jessie C. Workman, 93, of Bremerton died Aug. 12, 2002, in Seattle.
She was born March 11, 1909, in Cotterville, Alberta, Canada, to Siemon and Marina (Zuzak) Condro.
She married Robert L. Workman. He died in 1985.
Mrs. Workman had worked as a nurse with a private medical practice.
She was a member of the Bremerton Elks Lodge and Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include a brother, Walter Condro of Chicago; two sisters, Ann Cameron of Eugene, Ore., and Eileen O'Leary of Lake Stevens; one grandson, Rob Workman of Federal Way; and one great-grandson, Adrion Workman of Federal Way.
She also was preceded in death by her son, Richard Workman.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with a funeral Mass following at 11 a.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. Interment icon will be at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 4215 Pine Road NE, Bremerton, WA 98310.

Mary Stephens
Mary E. Stephens, 57, of Poulsbo died Aug. 31, 2002, at Harrison Hospital from complications of kidney cancer.
She was born Sept. 29, 1944, in Graham, Mo., to John and Lorene (Chappell) Barber. She attended Port Townsend High School, graduating from Olympic College in 1979 and earning a bachelor's degree in 1991 from Montana State University in Bozeman.
She was a homemaker and mother.
She wrote poetry and enjoyed portraying "Buttens, " a big, green, clown dog at community events. She was a member of Unity Church of Bremerton.
Survivors include her father, now of Nixa, Mo.; a son, Dennis Stephens of Flagstaff, Ariz.; four daughters, Suzette Brownfield of Chimacum, Gina McKinsey of Missoula, Mont., Jennifer Parker of Boise, Idaho, and Melanie Guknes of Austin, Texas; three brothers, Sam Barber of Sumner, Jim Barber of Shelton and Herbert "Sonny" Barber of Buckeye, Ariz.; a sister, Jewell Crawford of Nixa; and seven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Nathan, Rebecca, Sadie, Ray, Joshua and Michael. She was preceded in death by her mother in 1999 and by a brother, John R. Barber.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Aug. 23 at Unity Church of Bremerton, 1712 Trenton Ave. A reception follows the service at the Bremerton Senior Center, 1140 Nipsic Ave.

Lyle Huestis
Lyle Wynne (Job) Huestis, 90, of Bremerton died Aug. 6, 2002, in Bremerton.
She was born Jan. 10, 1912, in Mountain View, Calif., to Barney and Juliette (Newnan) Job. Her parents were apricot orchardists.
She graduated from Mountain View High School, later earning a teaching degree. She received a master's degree in religion from Berkeley Divinity College in Berkeley, Calif.
She went on to work as a missionary kindergarten teacher on an Indian reservation near Carson City, Nev., from 1935 to 1942. In 1943, the Baptist Missionary Program sent her to Bremerton, where she was instrumental in establishing a Sunday school program at the Manette Community Church.
In addition to her activities with the Sunday school and other church youth groups, she served as a field director for the Bremerton office of the Totem Girl Scout Council.
In December 1948, she married Max Huestis at the Manette Community Church. She then became a homemaker, remaining active in the church.
Her favorite pastimes were genealogy and knitting.
Survivors include a son, Mark Huestis and his wife, Marie, of Port Orchard; two granddaughters, Dawn and Lindsay, both of Port Orchard; and a niece, Ruth, of Los Altos, Calif.
At the family's request, there will be no services. Memorial donations may be made to Manette Community Church's Youth Programs, 1137 Hayward Ave., Bremer-ton, WA 98310. Condolences may be sent to the Huestis Family, P.O. Box 823, Port Orchard, WA 98366.
