David Playter
Former Port Angeles resident David George Playter Sr., 61, of Clearwater, Fla., died Aug. 1, 2002, in Clearwater.
He was born June 24, 1941, in Bremerton to Richard E. and Marion (Risser) Playter. He graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1960.
Mr. Playter served in the Air Force from 1962 to 1964. He later worked for Crown Zellerbach in Port Angeles for 15 years.
His favorite pastimes were spending time with his children and grandchildren, bicycling and writing songs.
Survivors include a son, David George Playter Jr. of Roswell, Ga.; two daughters, Tina Marie Kadey of Marysville and Teresa Louise Weitmann of Sultan; two brothers, Richard E. Playter of Port Angeles and William A. Playter of Bainbridge Island; a sister, Carol L. Stoddard of Port Angeles; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Drennan and Ford Funeral Home in Port Angeles.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Al Simmons
Alan B. "Al" Simmons, 73, of Lakeland Village in Allyn died Aug. 10, 2002, of a heart attack in Allyn.
He was born Oct. 2, 1928, in Sunnyside to Harold and Ruth (Crouch) Simmons.
Mr. Simmons served in the Army from 1951 to 1954.
He married Barbara "Barby" Peer on Aug. 19, 1972, in Seattle.
Mr. Simmons had worked as an electrician for VECA Electric in Seattle, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
He had enjoyed skiing at Crystal Mountain for 30 years and summers golfing at Lakeland Village in Allyn.
Survivors include his wife; four brothers, Eldon Simmons of Fullerton, Calif., Dick Simmons of Yakima, Bob Simmons of Salem, Ore., and Merlyn Simmons of Stanwood; and a sister, Jean Pattison of Vancouver, Wash.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 4414 Woodland Park Ave. N, Seattle, WA 98103.

Edith Rice
Edith Victoria Rice, 86, of Poulsbo died Aug. 9, 2002, in Poulsbo.
She was born April 11, 1916, in Poulsbo to Henry and Mamie (Pierce) Cotter. She graduated from high school in Poulsbo in 1934 as valedictorian of her class and later graduated from Seattle Business College.
She married Frank E. Rice on Sept. 25, 1936, in Seattle.
Mrs. Rice had worked as a bookkeeper until her marriage. She then became a homemaker.
She was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with her husband and a group of their friends.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Steve Rice and his wife, Diane, of Bainbridge Island, Tom Rice of Poulsbo and Ray Rice and his wife, Gayle, of Bremerton; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Anne Marie Rice.
A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove, 22272 Foss Road NE in Poulsbo. Inurnment will be private.

Celerina Camarce
Celerina B. Camarce, 90, of Port Orchard died Aug. 9, 2002, at her home from longterm complications of dementia.
She was born Feb. 3, 1912, in Silang, Cavite, Philippines, to Simeon and Victoria (Magno) Bawar.
She attended high school in Silang.
Mrs. Camarce married Rulfo Camarce on June 17, 1942, in Silang. He preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 1978.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and cooking for her family.
She was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard.
Mrs. Camarce is survived by sons Rudy of Silverdale and Andy of Orlando, Fla.; daughter Mellie Navarro of Port Orchard; brother Eusebio Bawar in the Philippines; sisters Victorina Manesca, Salud Giron and Alicia Oway also in the Philippines; seven grandchildren, Joseph, Solmaricel, Rodney, Honeylet, Roderick, Janice, Christian; and two great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be at 5 p.m., followed by visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Rill Chapel.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church. She will be inurned in the Philippines at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Lois Johnson
Lois Ione Johnson, 90, of Silverdale died Aug. 5, 2002, at Forest Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bremerton.
She was born Oct. 18, 1911, in Tacoma to Warren and Nellie (Rush) Whittaker. She graduated from Point Washington Bay Union High School in Silverdale in 1929.
She married James "Jim" Johnson in 1931. The couple lived in Silverdale throughout their marriage.
Mrs. Johnson had been employed as a reporter for the Silverdale Breeze and the Bremerton Searchlight. She also worked as a buyer for Bremer's Department Store and went on to become a manager with Home Interiors, representing the Dallas-based company in this area until her retirement.
During World War II, she had served as a Red Cross Gray Lady and as a Civil Defense volunteer. She was active in both the Silverdale United Methodist Church and Silverdale Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Johnson and her husband loved to travel and spent many winters in Apache Junction, Ariz. They had camped and traveled throughout the United States.
She was a member of the Silverdale Garden Club. She enjoyed flower arranging and fishing.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Warren Johnson and his wife, Kathy, of Anacortes; a daughter, Sharleen Foerster and her husband, Karl, of Apache Junction; six grandchildren, Vikki Smith, Terri Madison, Sherri Larson, Laurie Dimock, Dean W. Johnson and Traci Ferrell; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at Lewis Funeral Chapel with graveside services following at Mountain View cemetery in Silverdale.
Memorial donations may be made to Silverdale Lutheran Church, 11701 Ridgepoint Drive NW, Silverdale, WA 98383.

Jennievee Kelly
Jennievee Isabel Kelly, 89, of Bainbridge Island died Aug. 9, 2002, at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle.
She was born Dec. 15, 1912, in Ypsilanti, N.D., to Julius and Mary (Angen) Ukestad. She was a 1930 graduate of Ypsilanti High School.
On May 24, 1934, she married Owen A. Kelly in Jamestown, N.D.
In the early 1940s, they moved to Rolling Bay on Bainbridge Island, where Mrs. Kelly worked as a cook at Messenger House Nursing Home from 1950 to 1974.
She was devoted to her family, and enjoyed sewing, quilting, cultivating flowers and knitting caps for premature babies born at Harrison Hospital. She was an active member of Port Madison Lutheran Church.
She is survived by three sons, Donald Kelly and his wife, Julie, of Kingston, Owen "Buster" Kelly and his wife, Maureen, of Bremerton, and David Kelly of Rolling Bay; two daughters, Patricia Yeo and her husband, Bill, and Lorretta Short and her husband, Dave, all of Bainbridge Island; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Ken Gehlhar of Jamestown, N.D.; a sister-in-law, Gladys Ukestad of North Dakota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1959; three brothers, Loyal, Manroy and James; two sisters, Ianca Larson and Bertha Gehlhar; and two half-brothers, Marcus and David Ukestad.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Port Madison Lutheran Church on Bainbridge Island. Interment icon will be at Hillcrest cemetery at Port Blakely on Bainbridge Island.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Port Madison Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Bob Mayberry
Robert B. "Bob" Mayberry, 69, of Belfair died from complications of a stroke Aug. 8, 2002, in Bremerton.
He was born Aug. 18, 1932, in Bay Ridge, Md., to James and Ruth (Barnhart) Mayberry. He graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Springs, Md., in 1951 and from Olympic College.
He married Patricia A. May on Nov. 18, 1961, in Hampton, Va.
Mr. Mayberry served in the Navy from 1951 until his retirement in 1971 as a chief torpedoman. He went on to work for 22 years with the Department of Defense at Naval Undersea Warfare Center at Keyport until his retirement from that position.
At the time of his death, he and his wife had owned and operated a restaurant, Pat's Little Red Barn, in Belfair for the past 15 years.
Mr. Mayberry enjoyed gardening and was a Master Gardener. Other favorite pastimes were travel, reading and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Grant "Tony" Mayberry, stationed in Germany with the Army; two daughters, Kim Nystrom and Jada Zulick, both of Belfair; two brothers, Roger Huff of Riverside, Calif., and Grant Mayberry of Maryland; a sister, Jeanne Jameson of Maryland; and three grandchildren, Robert, Michael and Connor Nystrom, all of Belfair. He was preceded in death by a sister, Anne Burgess.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Twin Firs cemetery in Belfair. A gathering of family and friends follows the service at the family home in Belfair. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Olympic Peninsula Kidney Center, 2740 Clare Ave., Bremerton, WA 98310.

Juanita Manning
Juanita Bernice Manning, 88, of Bremerton died Aug. 7, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born April 6, 1914, in Missoula, Mont., to Emmett P. and Bertha W. (Ziesemer) Bell. She graduated from Kellogg High School in Kellogg, Idaho, in 1931.
She had been employed as a clerk/typist at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1976.
She had been very active as a Bluebird and Campfire leader. She was instrumental in the establishment of Camp Niwana in Port Orchard.
She also had worked with the Democratic Party and served as an election polling place volunteer. She was a member of Kitsap Lake Homemakers, a garden club in Kitsap County and the Lutheran church.
Survivors include a son, James H. Manning and his wife, Mary, of Bremerton; three daughters, Edith V. Perrault and her husband, Larry, of Everett, Ann L. Bradbury and her husband, James, of Beaverton, Ore., and Helen J. Johnson and her husband, Leonard E., of Sequim; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, June McAvoy and Erma White.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Family of God Lutheran Church, 7625 Central Valley Road NW in Bremerton. Burial will be at Forest Lawn cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Kitsap County Habitat for Humanity, 811 Veneta Ave., Bremerton, WA 98337.

Sue Merrick Maule
Sue Merrick Maule, 69, of Lofall near Poulsbo died Aug. 4, 2002, at Harrison Hospital of pancreatic cancer.
She was born May 28, 1933, in Seattle to Dr. John Newton Merrick and Amanda Dixie (Dickson) Merrick.
She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle in 1951. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif., in 1954 and a master of arts degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 1956.
She married Robert W. Maule on Dec. 22, 1954, in Seattle. Mr. Maule is a retired U.S. consul general.
Mrs. Maule assisted her husband throughout his career as a diplomat, serving in Brussels, Belgium; Baghdad, Iraq; Port-au-Prince, Haiti; Vienna, Austria; Beirut, Lebanon; Montreal, Canada; London; and Washington, D.C.
She enjoyed music and travel. A special interest was nature conservation.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Brian A. Maule and his wife, Leslie, of Poulsbo; a daughter, Dr. Alison C. Maule-Kronmiller and her husband, David, of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister, Linda Jean Smith and her husband, Howard, of Redmond; and seven grandchildren, Simone, Annika, Elena, Aidan, Fiona, Peter and Brandon. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Michele Maule Matlock.
Services are private. Memorial donations may be made to the Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203.

Mary Williams
Mary P. Williams, 82, of Indianola died Aug. 5, 2002, at Martha & Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo.
She was born March 6, 1920, in King George County, Va., to Allen F. and Marion (Talbott) Potts.
She married James L. Williams on July 2, 1938. He died in 1990.
Mrs. Williams worked in civil service as a computer operator.
She was a member of Hanover Baptist Church in King George County.
She also was preceded in death by her son, James A. Williams, in 2001.
Inurnment will be at the family gravesite in King George County.
